[Q] Worth upgrading to over HTC G2? - T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide

Still on the fence on what I'd want to upgrade to from my current HTC G2...the main thing I'm looking for is a front-facing camera (for Skype calls), and I'm not sure whether I want a physical keyboard or not (with how few decent ones are being released anymore). One thing I do know is that I want to stick to T-Mobile for their cheap plan pricing. Other phones I'm seriously considering are the G2x and the Streak 5 (AWS/T-Mobile version, as hard/expensive as it may be to get).
Anyway, few things I'm wondering, though:
-What's the quality of the secondary camera like? Any good? Does it work with Skype video chat?
-What's battery life like? I can easily get through two days at least with my G2 with moderate use, and probably even better with a better ROM/kernel/etc.
-How does the keyboard compare to the G2's in both quality and features?
-What's the screen quality like, particularly outdoors? Any better or worse than the G2?
-What's the development outlook like (especially for AOSP/CM7-like stuff)? The G2 seems to be pretty active, with an ICS port already in the works...not sure how the myTouch compares.
-How do the processor/graphics compare? I know it's a dual-core, but is it any good? Not in terms of gaming power, though, just daily use - my G2 is smooth for most uses, but it still lags a bit here or there...
Basically I'm just wondering if the $400+ off-contract price is worth it, or if I should get the cheaper G2x (at around $250) or the Streak 5 with its huge screen.

Don't get the streak.
G2x is supposed to be a gaming phone. No keyboard or great camera. Although its a good phone.
Our phone has a way better keyboard. I hate the g2s keyboard. It looks flimsy. At the hinges. Other than that the keyboard is the same I think. Alt is used for numbers.
Screen quality is very good. Outdoors direct sunlight will make a huge glare though.
We have several roms. Aosp sense and hybrids. And a few kernels. G2 has been out longer and has more roms etc. G2x I think is in the same boat as us.
Battery life depends on use and how you use it. I can have the battery last. 3 days or a few hours.
I game on my slide. I haven't lagged once and I play graphic rich games like order and chaos. Everyday use I watch netflix and browse internet no problems. This phone is very fast. Also takes great pictures. No lag or shuttering whatsoever.
I don't use skype or the front camera so no comments on that.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply - other than the lack of development for it, why shouldn't I consider the Streak? And I know the G2x doesn't have a keyboard, but it'd be the logical (and cheap) upgrade for me from a G2.

I've had many problems with dell streaks from 5 to 7. I just had a streak 7 that was stuck in read only mode. I've just had bad experiences. I fix phones on the side that's why I say that.
G2x is a good phone. I was making the debate as you did. Hardware keyboard, tv out and camera is what sold me.
As far as logcial goes. I think your best logical step is to the slide, since your phone g2 has more things in common with the slide than the g2x. Just wanted to point that out.
Price wise I thought g2x and slide were the same? I know they were for me. G2x must be on special or something.

Ah, good to know about the Streaks. I had a Streak 7 and wasn't a fan of the screen quality in portrait mode, but that was my only complaint.
And true, the TV-out on the Slide is more useful to me - one of the two TV's I'd ever use the function doesn't have HDMI inputs, making composite more useful to me (plus the cable is smaller/cheaper from what I've seen).
I just figured the G2x would be the step up mainly by the name, but also because it has a bigger/better screen (one thing I really dislike about the Slide - same size screen as the G2).
And price-wise (I'm looking ay off-contract because I'm looking to use it with T-Mobile's value plans - can't afford an actual contract plan) - the G2x is as cheap as $250 for like-new (with box and all accessories) on eBay, while it's $350+ for the Slide (with less people selling them too).

From what I understand, almost all of the issues are software-related and have been fixed since launch either through official updates or ROMs (like CM7). I have heard of a few hardware ones like bad backlight bleeding and whatnot, though...and personally, I find the G2 to look much nicer than the Slide, with the more square edges and the aluminum.

Actually, while on the topic of comparing phones - how does the Sidekick 4G compare to the Slide? Honestly, my point-and-shoot camera is light/compact enough and powerful too to make a phone camera mostly an afterthought. And my G2 does just about everything fine, so I'm pretty sure the extra 200Mhz and the better GPU will suffice.

I still have the G2 as a backup phone. My only issue with the MT4GS is the lack of dev support and everyone slamming physical keyboards (are they forgetting that was one of the selling points of the G1?).

I just came from the G2 and I think its definitely a upgrade. Not by a lot but better camera, more ram, faster proscessor. Hopefully soon the developer support gets better soon. The g2 has lots of developers but go there and u will see its all the same sense roms I'm not lying.

Yeah. The only real AOSP dev is blah. MexDroid is good eye candy but is so much like GingerVillain it runs the risk of being classified as "kanged."
Sent from a message in a bottle.

If you are going to root the phone and use custom roms you are talking about more than a 200mhz jump. My MT4GS is at 1700mhz on both cores. That's more than a little increase from the the G2, which I also owned.
I can't live without the keyboard honestly. I have been thinking about making a mega-keyboard post cuz I don't think folks really utilize the hotkeys and thus, the real power of the keyboard, at all. I start all the apps I use from the keyboard and hardly ever go hunting around in app drawers for anything. It's super fast access to programs while maintaining an uncluttered homescreen.
The Genius button can be useful if you're into that. If not, the button can be remapped to do whatever it is you need more.
The front-facing camera works with Skype, Fring and GTalk. I can confirm that. I'm sure it works with other services as well. I wish there were more developers for the MT4GS. Coming from the Vibrant (in between my G2 and my MT4GS) I am accustomed to many more options. But the hardware for this phone is so good that I have stayed.
I used to flash roms at least once a day. I love options and getting the most out of hardware. So believe me, it takes a beast of a phone to keep me around with such a scarcity of deving goin on.
That said, we do have some talented devs like Blue, Undead, Computerkid, Chris, kornyone, et al. So I say go for it!! Join the fun.

The 200mhz was referring to the Sidekick, I'm well aware the Slide is dual-core.
Thanks for the info, though, definitely interested in the phone.

i had the g2 and had the options from mt4gs or sk4g. i got the slide cause sidekick was just too skinned for me.
the camera is deff an upgrade. specially if you keep a sense rom.
battery life will never be as good. i have an extended battery with each phone..
probably when more dev comes along this phones true potential will come out like the g2's has..
i only paid 130 for mine from insurance.. so it wasn't as bad as 400+ like you might be spending.. maybe try findin one used? it'll have a warranty if its not to old anyways.. or insurance claim? thats how i got mine.

A2EXT loads much slower on MexDroid than it does on PyroMod and it runs the DT A2SD script. PyroMod's A2SD script is an original work (I looked over the code). If you still have your G2, try out both ROMs after reading the instructions for both thoroughly.

[Q] how is it, Mytouch 4g owners? tell me please. :)

Hey guys!!!
I'm just wondering what you all think of the mytouch. I played with the g2, and I like it. I like the keyboard, and the screen looks better to me IMO.
However, with gingerbread proally coming out soon (PROBABLY) , that'll slow updates, for the MT right, because of mySense?
I LOVE THE MT4G. LOVELOVE.
I use facebook a lot
I text a lot
I like more customization
i'll probably root, overclock, and flash a custom rom when a lot of them become available.
mySense seems allright!
i consider myself an intermediate to advanced smartphone junky.
What phone should I get, and how do you like it?
I'm also worried that it's been a few months since the g2 came out, and its not even at the front at my TMO store anymore. I don't want to sign a contract and want another one before 3 months.
but the mt4g is! ideally, i wish they would add that g2 keyboard to the mytouch 4g and keep that z-hinge, it seems cool to me.
thanks!
so, should i get it? hows your experiences!? thanks.
its really important, i need a new phone before monday .
cmon guys please. 12 views, noone replies?
i just am deciding if i like mysense, and if its worth losing that amazing keyboard the g2 has. though the screen is only .1 inch bigger, the mytouch screen seems way bigger! i like it in my hand.
Well I have no experience with the MT4G yet as I am gonna get it today. My first decision was to get the G2 but after doing countless research (youtube reviews!) and comparisons of the two, I fell in love with the myTouch over the G2. The hard keyboard of the G2 doesn't really matter to me, the onscreen keyboard is good if not better with Swype. I prefer vanilla android over other UIs but mySense seems to have a lot of interesting tweaks and features that I might enjoy having. If we don't like it then there's rooting of course as I'm sure there will be plenty of roms available soon. The updates are the only thing that have me a bit worried but like I said, rooting the phone might ease the pain of dragging updates by flashing 2.3 roms if available.
Not sure if this might help but its worth noting i think.
Good luck on choosing your next phone!
I've had both the G2 & the MT4G and I'm a lot happier with the MT4G.
The G2 seemed too bricky for my tastes and I really didn't use the hard keyboard to compensate. MySense is not as good as full fledged sense but it's not a huge difference.
I know not too long after gingerbread comes out we'll probably have a Rom to flash it on our phones so updates don't worry me so much.
I think it really comes down to if you want a hard keyboard or a front facing camera. I chose the front facing camera & less bulkiness

maybe because this is the 15th "how do you like your mytouch" "is it better then the g2" thread.
people need to learn how to read before they start typing
I have had the G2 and now the MT4G and although the G2 is a very very good phone I must say that I believe the MT4G is the best all around phone I have ever owned, I also have a Vibrant and a Nexus One at this time but I am going to sell the Nexus One. All of these are Great phones IMO but the G2(hinge issues, connection issues, radio issues)and the Nexus One( touch screen issues at times, signal issues) and the Vibrant(virtually no GPS until just a short time ago, lags etc.signal issues) do not seem to compare with the all stability of the MT4G of which the only issue I have found was a slight glitch in MMS messaging which is now covered. All of this is obviously just my opinions but if I had to go with just 1 phone right now it would be the MT4G

BOO-YA.
I gave up my mint N1 for the MT4G. I know there aren't many ROM's for it yet, and God knows how long it will take to get Amon_RA, but it took a good month before there were ROM's to flash for the N1. With Android 2.3 so close to being released it's just a matter of time before we get a vanilla gingerbread ROM for this device.

I'm with ya... Came over from an Evo and just can't get used to the hard keys at the bottom instead of the touch-keys. Also experiencing some automatic re-boots (3 in three days) and some text sending problems (I already turned of the Teklia). If the Evo had been a GSM phone, I would have brought it to TMO (sprint really sucks in this town). I'm looking for a GSM Evo-clone! My only other choice will be ATT in about a month when they come to town, but they don't have any decent androids yet (sorry, the samsung captivate just doesn't do it for me... the touch screen is terrible)

Nexus One owner who absolutely loves the My Touch 4G. Will always keep the N1 for the almost instant upgrades but the hardware on this My Touch is 2nd to none. This phone has it all and it all works. I'm getting use to this non vanilla Android for lack of a better word but using Launcher Pro this thing is dynamite. Best phone to date besides the Nexus One of course. Seriously the My Touch 4G is probably the best phone I have ever owned. The Nexus One will always be my go to phone, I'm just always drawned to that thing.
PS
The HSPA+ was just flipped on in my town. Live in a suburb outside Boston and getting between 3.5 to 5.5 Mbps on download and 1.5 on upload. I was usually getting around 900-950 kbps on the download. What a major diifference and these speeds are in my town and most surrounding towns. T-Mobile is killing this area with their great network. I am in freaken heaven. Thank You T-Mobile.
Those speeds are on my Nexus One. My Touch 4G is higher.
I had the EVO for almost a month (trial period). While I agree the bigger screen is great, it seems a little more washed out, maybe due to the fact that the same resolution is now scretched to accomedate a 4.3'' screen. The capacitive buttons on the bottom was a wash for me. I find myself accidently hitting them sometimes. I much prefer the physical keys. Battery life on the MT4G is much better. I could never manage to squeeze 10 hours from the EVO (moderate use). So, I chose the MT4G over the EVO. The only thing I did like about the EVO was the original SENSEUI on it, Tmobile's version is a little sloppy. Just my experience and opinion.
Your device is clearly defective, get a warranty exchange. That, or your lying.

LOVE the hardware, but don't like Sense. Waiting for CM6 to come out. You could always pick up a used Nexus or Vibrant for $300 or so. Or buy this one from T-mo for $450 ish without contract and then trade up later if you really want...

SGS4 or Nexus S

Im so confused on which one to get. I mean the SGS2 is a vibrant with 4g pretty much? And i dont know if the nexus s has 4g capability? I can get the sgs4 for 139. and the nexus s off best buy for 99. Really want to based this on development. So any info i would appericate it
nexus is best your choice .
Can you give me a more detailed answer as in why? I mean i like the sgs4 cause i always liked the vibrant. But the nexus s does have development. The only thing that scares me is the Internal 16gb which will lead into corrupting if a bad flash is done!
I recently had to make the same decision and had friends with both I borrowed for a week.
The nexus s is amazingly fast. It boots and shuts down in a fraction of the time. It has flash for the camera. It has gps that actually works right out of the box. It has a cooler design and a much more solid feel. It has the nfc that you will probably never use. It has premium support and google ota updates of the newest stuffs. The usb port also has a much nicer feel.
Video playback is poor compared to the vibrant.
It lacks support for most 3d games.
There is no sd card slot
No gorilla glass
I have owned several vibrants and everything that is true for them is true for the sgs4g. The screen is amazing and is protected by gorilla glass. Video playback is second to none. Games play like a dream.
Gps is essentially unusable on most handsets.
The case is cheap feeling and looking.
No flash for camera
I decided video playback and game support was more important than flash and gps but I am upset those are the best choices. You might be wise to just wait for the price to drop on the x2.

Im coming from sprint. I had both evo and epic. The evo had great devs, while the epic has little to no support at all. CM7 and MIUI are still in alpha stages. I just dont want the sgs4 to be like the epic. I was looking at the lg gxs or whatever their having alot of issues on the first batch released(bleeding screen, phone wont connect to 3g) Mt4g(feels cheap though) sgs4 or nexus are the only ones i would consider getting.
If I could go back in time I would choose the mt4g rooted with cm7, sgs4g has its benefits like said earlier except I don't use it for movies or gaming I bounce between apps often and fast and the sgs4g would sometimes lag.
So I bought the g2x and while it is wicked fast and extremely strong with already great support for development, the phone has its issues and chooses when the issues will come up, I would just go scan the general thread for the g2x real quick

It seems to me, the SGS4G is slow to get developer support for ROMS and such. That is the only reason I regret owning one. However, after rooting and applying the FOTA fix, it is a cool phone.
From my understanding, phones like the Nexus will have tons of ROMS and customization because they are not tainted by integrations such as Samsung's Touch Wiz and are easier to work with.

Sgs4g I like the video playback but thats just my opinion. Gps is pretty good for me and it is true no dev support on the sgs4g I mean not as much as other phonea so of you are looking to play around with the phone like changing roms and kernels stuff like that I wouldnt recommend unless you dont mind waiting which is my case I dont mind waiting so I dont have any complaints. One last thing it does lag here and there but is not that bad. Really cant say much about nexus s I havent even play with it. G2x was mentioned it is a beast pgone but I went to the g2x forums and there were a los of complaints with the screen you ahould go check it out. Best thing to do is just go to the forums of each device and read about it, comments and complaints and it would help a lot.

I think the sgs4g is the best device I've owned but thats after doing some system tweaks like getting root, freezing some apps, alter minfree to strict settings for better ram handling when swapping applications, changing the disk scheduler to deadline, doing the fota files fix and getting a class 6 micro sd card. After all that this phone has never lag or failed period. But out the box...is fast. Once u have used it for about a week or two thats when you could start seing lag by either apps you have downloaded and new services running in the background not counting the unnecesary ones that were already running when you first get it...gps works flawlesly and so does everything else, but thats after you hack the phone the way you want it...
Up to you though...
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
The only reason the Nexus s is any faster is because it came stock with the ext4 file system. Our phones have the same file system as the Vibrant (rfs) It is not efficient, and that is where our lag is coming from.
We will start seeing some ROMS that will have ext4 built into them. When we do get this we will see quad scores around 1700-1800. To give you an idea our phones stock will score around 900. EXT4 ruffly doubles the speeds of the system. Now if you add ext4 with an overclocked kernel. The scores will be around if not higher than 2000.
This phone will be very fast and stable in not to long.
Thanks guys for the help. I went to go play with the following phones today:
g2x- Front looks really nice, and the display showed sharped for lcd. BUT my epic seems faster? and the back of the phone is FUGLY I mean the color, color........color lol! Reminds me of those cheap boost mobile off the wall colors. A case may solve that problem but i wouldnt pay 200 for it knowing how the back looked to me.
g2- Fast little thing, seen the potiental of it on xda, pretty much a better looking sprint htc evo shift 4G. BUT the demo hinge was BARELY on the phone. Soo going have to pass on that looks like a future problem.
mt4g- The best one of the group. Fast, comfortable in hand, light and Fast and xda support helps it there in my book. BUT its looks cheap. I mean how the color contrast clash on the phone. If i got one had to be either be the red one or white one.
sgs4- Some idiot STOLE THE DEMO! soooo i gotta go back tomorrow to look at it!!!
Nexus s- Actually locally a guy was selling one on CL. So i meet him to look at it. the screen is awesome of course cause of the superman screen lol! BUT the phone Looks cheaper than the mt4g!!!! I mean its all plastic and black gloss. Drop it and your gonna be hurting really bad. Also you have to deal with best buy and google since they sell it and tmobile just provides the service. I may sound anal but im a complex thinker and i always think ahead of myself.
Whole day of researching and im still confused and dont know which one to get lol!!!!

I'm a proud owner of a G2x... though some screens have bleeding issues.... mine doesn't... There are plenty of G2x's that are doing just fine, it's just easier to complain.... If you do have issues, you will have a 1 year warranty which means you will be able to switch it when new batches come out and by then issues should have been fixed... Whatever you do BUY THE PHONE IN STORE to test the device... Play with the settings and everything! If you are going to get a phone GET THE BEST there is to offer you and right now that would be the G2x...
SGS4G and Nexus S both have their flaws and are similar devices... The Nexus S isn't 4g capable (if that matters to you)... the SGS4G isn't anything to dazzle over and the Touch Wiz UI isn't my favorite... If you can wait a little longer it may be worth looking at the HTC Sensation...
No offense but i dont see why people rave so much about the sensation. Its a dual core evo 4g. Had two evo 4g when i was with sprint.......Nothing special. Sure it will probably have a bunch of dev support. But to me its not something wanting on for.
But after reading more reviews and seeing on the g2x side. Its not seeming so bad now. Also you have to consider that im coming to tmobile so late while the g2 mt4g and nexus s are kinda old i guess you can say. Even though the g2 and mt4g will get 2.3 but i think thats about it for them as OTA updates.
the Nexus S 4G...on TMO...would be......oh wait...why am I dreaming again
Get teh Samsung Galaxy S4G if you're planning to get a data plan and actually use it
SGS4
Very low internal space, 200MB as apposed to the Vibrants 16G. The phone benchmarks pretty low. But it does have the fastest antenna at 21mbs.
Nexus S
Wow it has a curved screen..... but no SD card support???? Why? Pretty cool but the download speeds will be lower because no 4g support.
If you're looking for the best I suggest the G2x or G2. I personaly use the G2 and it is amazing. But tmo just launched the G2x and it is to die for. Amazing 8MP camera, dual core processor, hdmi out for hdtv support. Get that if anything, the two phones you're deciding between have already been out dated by the G2x.

Wait til the Sensation or even better the SGS 2....but wait something will come out better right after...mytouch 4g slide anyone...??
It sounds like the price is a concern of the op.... I say go for the nexus s... the network speed increase with the sgs4g is not enough to overcome the lack of developer support. And its cheaper. Then again... the g2x is your best choice ATM... if you have the $$$.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
I had the SGS4G and exchanged it for the G2x and I have no regrets. This phone is amazingly fast and responsive and dev support is already awesome. Within 2 or 3 days the phone had clockworkmod working through ROM manager.
Pretty amazing. Plus Cyanogen, Team Whiskey and others already got the phone and are working on the ROM.
If you still have a choice I say go with the G2x. Dual core is future proof. Just came out, so this phone will probably be good for the next 2 years.
Hope that helps with your decision

[RESOLVED] Pros Cons of Nexus S?

So I recently switched to Sprint(ethical reasons, phone was a back burner issue) and grabbed an Evo. I can swap it during the first 30 days, which happens to give me about 4 days to consider swapping it for what will be the newly launched Nexus S 4g. I just want to know what your guys' opinion on this would be, since seeing specs written down doesn't mean as much as having the phone in hand for a while does.
From what I can see, it's like this.
Pros: Battery way better, unlocked from start, better proc(though same default clock speed), more internal memory and RAM, slightly smaller(more pocketable), updates from Google, better screen
Cons: cameras are worse(5mp & VGA v 8mp & 1.3mp), no external memory, hassle of exchanging, button arrangement(not sure why no one else does it the HTC way)
is there anything I'm overlooking while I consider the two? I haven't had a Nexus phone hands on, so I'm stuck looking at tech specs which could ultimately not matter.
(Update) Ended up swapping them. (/Update)
find a shop that has it on display and test it for yourself. i was unsure myself until i tested it personally. camera quality really is a non-issue imo.
I switched from Evo to Nexus 2 weeks ago. It was one of the best decisions I ever made.
Are you really going to be swapping out multiple SD cards? I never did in the six months I had my Evo. So that was a non issue for me. I got used to the button placement in less than one week. And the camera I think is just as good as the Evo camera. The flash works way better, low light pics are better. MPs are meaningless, its all about the sensor and the Nexus has a good one.
Not to mention that this sexy Nexus makes my fugly old Evo feel like a monster truck next to my new Maserati
My two cents!

I'll swing by my local sprint store tomorrow to check and see if they have a demo model on the floor. If not, may swing to AT&T or best buy to check one out hands on.

I'm in the exact same boat as you. I'm upgrading my phone (From a TP2) for work and have been looking at both the evo and the nexus s. I went to best buy and they have a demo unit available to play with. I went with the evo for earlier availibility but think i will ultimately be end up swapping with the nexus. I would reccomend you hit up best buy to see the nexus s 4g in person.

The Evo is a more "normal" phone and in my opinion has more dev support compared to the Nexus S, if I were you I would wait for the Evo 3D, but if that is not an option for you, stick with the Evo. The cons in this case just outweigh the pros, updates do not matter because Gingerbread doesn't bring much to the table, the cameras are better on the Evo, Sense is less depressing than stock Android, Sense is more social, the Evo is okay in the pocket, they have the same amount of RAM, and the screen on the Evo is amazing compared to other HTC devices, if you plan on watching movies it is AMAZING on both, but the Evo has the stand so it works better. Really the Nexus S is a hassle if you want to use it as a smart phone, I use it as a phone, yes but I mess around with it more than I text, email, and call people on it.
Stick with the Evo, unless you can wait get the Evo 3D.

By the way if this is for work, get an Evo that thing has an amazing touch screen keyboard making it easier to edit documents etc. The Nexus S can sometimes feel like you are beta testing software, the past 3 updates for the Nexus S have always brought a plethora of issues for a lot of people.

Sense actually works as a major con for the Evo. You have no idea how many times its pissed me off over something minor and annoying they added in. The gallery with it is crap, it assumes all mms are slideshows, I can't delete a Facebook number from the phone(traditionally prevents it from syncing that contact), I have to set up an 8 digit passwd on it just to set up a WiFi network, and so many other things that just don't happen in stock android. It's way more trouble than the tiny amount of eye candy it brings is worth.
Evo 3D does look nice, but since I just got the Evo two weeks ago, there's no possible way for me to get it. The Nexus is only an option cause it launches during my 30 day return/exchange window.

I say Nexus S. As much as people "hate" Samsung, their camera hardware ****s on HTC. Only the newer HTC's can even compete. Speaker is awesome on the NS. And if you ever plan on playing at least some games then NS is your choice. Hummingbird proc in it is so much better than the first Gen snapdragon. And I believe battery life is better on the NS.
But of course it's all up to you on how you use your phone. I love sense as well and what it has to offer. So it's really up to you and what you use your phone for daily.

As a user that has had both. I took the MT4G over the Sensation. There is no need for that much power in a phone right now plus the battery life on those things is TERRIBLE. However from a money standpoint, I would straight trade the MT4G for a Sensation any day lol.
Totally worth it in my eyes. This is more than enough phone for me so I won't be upgrading anytime soon. The dev community is really strong too. Already put virtuous quattro on it and it's amazing. Tried out some of the sense ics roms but I like vanilla ics best.

I've been thinking of getting a Sensation myself for the last couple of days after my bad eMMC MT4G ate it, but the more I look at my options, the more I'm leaning towards getting another MT4G provided that I get one with the good eMMC and screen.
The Sensation's primary issue is signal strength. It annoys me that I have to limit my options for which case to buy so that it doesn't have a role in degrading the signal. Also, I prefer using Wi-Fi over 4G because I'm on a simple data plan, and it's unacceptable to me for the Wi-Fi antenna at the top to be extremely susceptible to a death grip that I have to hold the phone a certain way in landscape mode, and likewise I can't hold the phone by its bottom unless if I also want to degrade the mobile signal as well. I can hold the MT4G with two fingers using the TPU Fusion case, but I don't do it. Why would I do that with the Sensation, with or without a case? If I can give Apple crap for their iPhone 4 inconveniences, I will do the same to HTC. It's not acceptable.
To me, my phone still needs to primarily be a phone, then a mobile Internet device and GPS, then a PDA, and lastly, a time-waster. As great of a device as the Sensation was spec-wise for 2011, it comes up short in too many practical categories. The signal strength, battery life, and speaker volume (for which there is a fix) are all worse than the MT4G. Even though I would like the larger, higher resolution screen and dual-core processor, I don't make use of those things enough for them to matter.
That said, I still hate the idea of playing panel and eMMC lottery to get a good MT4G. If the Sensation didn't have its issues, I may have gotten one the first time around, because I really like the phone otherwise.
Of course, when it comes to trading the two phones, that's a no-brainer because you're basically making $50-100.

Weird, I've not had a single issue with signal of any kind no matter how I hold it. Use my wifi at home at all times and haven't had any issues with my 4G either. Also I get great battery life on ics, just as good as I did with my mt4g. Speaker volume also not an issue. Have you had one of these? Cause I have absolutely zero doubts about making the switch and would never go back.

I haven't. Those are all the complaints I've read in the xda Sensation forums. What it boils down to for me is whether I want to spend the extra $80-100 for hardware that I know I won't put to maximal use and a new set of problems. It may not be every handset, just like not every MT4G has a bad screen, bad eMMC, squeaky buttons, or whatever else. However, the Sensation does have its share of problems and the ones that it has are potential deal breakers to me, regardless of what another user's tolerance, threshold, or experience is.
I haven't ruled out the Sensation yet, but it's hard for me to pull the trigger on either a second MT4G or a Sensation knowing that both of them have the potential to be a bigger pain in the ass than any phone I've owned before the last MT4G. What's frustrating is that those are my only candidates at this point because nothing else appeals to me nor is in my budget. I've only started to take a liking to some Samsung and Motorola smartphones based on their late-2011 models, but those are way out of my budget and I know I'd want to switch to AOSP immediately with those phones.
You know, if I had to replace my MT4G, I'd just go for a Galaxy S. They're easy to root and there's a decent amount of support. And everything works on ICS. I'm just not a fan of the build quality. I'd be using my Galaxy S if it wasn't for the fact that it feels cheap and plasticy. My MT4G is like a lump of steel by comparison (which is good).

word to that brother! I hate the build quality of the Galaxy S, however the build quality on the mytouch 4g is awesome!
I recently traded a HD2 and for a Mytouch 4g and I was lucky enough to get one with a good eMMc chip and display
Haha. Yeah. I tend to keep my older phones, and when I was gifted the Galaxy S, I switched back to my MT4G. In fact, build quality was what kept me with Blackberry for so long. After I was given my MT3G Slide, I got hooked onto android because of flash support. That and I could easily play SNES emulators.
It's a shame to see people move away from the phone. Especially with the recent news that perhaps we could start getting full functionality from ICS because of the other similar phone's official ICS upgrade.

I think I've decided to save my money and get another MT4G for now while keeping my eye on the Amaze or whatever else might become a good modder phone when it's truly time for me to upgrade.
I know some people here like to upgrade phones like they're leasing BMWs, but my phone is not a status symbol. I'll just take a solid, good-looking form factor with sufficiently powerful hardware for my needs, because once I'm done rooting and flashing a new ROM, I don't mess with it again.
I've got a Sensation and MT4G, and I switch back and forth in use. Spec wise the Sensation may seem a lot better on paper, but here's my perspective in comparing the 2 in real life.
Sensation pluses:
* Screen size & resolution
* 8 MB Camera and 1080p Camcorder
* More active development, so quicker path to ICS
Sensation minues:
* Antennas built into the rear cover - arguably a defective design; harder to do a simple battery pull; not nearly as solid as the MT4G design with its metal battery cover; and generally the MT4G seems to get better reception too.
For most other items, like battery life, speed of use with or without Sense, lack of lag, built in memory, 4g speeds, browsing, etc., the devices are very similar if not about the same. Dual core in the Sensation is nice, but on both of my devices I only OC to about 1.2 ghz and they both (with the right GB rom) have the same smoothness and similar benchmarks. Sensation is just like a slightly newer brother to the MT4G IMO.

Well the sgs2 is average 350+ and they claim it's "like new" or "used for only one week" which I find hard to believe. and the lg g2x average 200+ and I have a pre paid plan from t mobile and love it so I wouldn't be able to get the sgs3 sadly (that phone looks so sexy ) and yes the HTC one s I could most likely get but the people I've talked to about their sgs2 say the the sgs2 is better (I don't see how ) and they use that as their means for being firm about their price. I just ordered a gently used G2x on ebay (they go around $200, depending on condition). This is a good value for the specs. The Galaxy S2 is $350+, which gets into a new Galaxy Nexus territory. From what I've researched, custom ROMs like CM7 should be pretty stable and fully functional, most of the problems with the G2x are software anyway. Only hardware issue is the camera dust under cover, which I plan to remedy by putting a clear tape over the LED flash, which I normally don't use anyway.
Also LG already announced ICS for Optimus 2X (international version), it's just delayed again to 3rd quarter, once that is out, one of the major problems with current CM9 ROMs should be resolved (no video acceleration or recording).
Speaking from experience, I have both phones.
GS2 wins for stability, just works, and has a better camera than the LG G2X. But..... personally I'm not thrilled with the GS2 device for the sheer size.
I've used G2X for almost a year. You just have to find a ROM you can live with and make tweaks so that it won't freeze/crash while charging. Other than that, phone is solid. CM7 was best ROM and overall performance. Stock gave best battery but I can't stand STOCK ROMs.
But the biggest reason I really switched to the GS2 was sick of the random crazy battery life and the GPS never working when I need it for emergencies.
I made the mistake of not test driving the GS2 on T-mobile store to get a better feel. Big screen with low resolution is what pisses me off, on top of the fact that the size of the phone isn't friendly to my small hands. If I overlook those two flaws, sure its awesome phone.
Also, the T989 just doesn't have a variety of ROMS available and have to wait for the official release from Tmobile, CM7 isn't reliable for it (I love CM7), and has no CM9 love yet.
I might overlook the negatives I have if Dev for T989 picked up. Until then, it works, reliable, and no headaches.

I own a G2X, my buddy has a Sgs2 an I would not trade him dead even! The G2X is resilient and easily customizable. Dev support for the G2X is 50 to 1 compared to the Sgs2. I have (and still do) flashed numerous Roms and Kernels to my phone with little or no issue. He bricked his rather quickly. He got his second one and asked me to root and customize - which I did. I was astonished at how little there was to look at / choose from in the Samsung forums here.

I have (and still do) flashed numerous Roms and Kernels to my phone with little or no issue. He bricked his rather quickly. He got his second one and asked me to root and customize - which I did. I was astonished at how little there was to look at / choose from in the Samsung forums here.
bang for your buck? +1 for the G2X
better screen and lots more $$$, go for the s2.
my two pennies.

You must be talking about T-Mobile GS2. SGS2 international is one of the best supported devices out there, has official ICS + fully functional CM9.
Sweet, love all the input guys!! Really giving me a lot to work with and make my decision harder xD
I have a few questions, I found an SGS2 CM7 ROM that lists everything as working. And i too love CM7 waiting for AOKP or CM9 to obtain all the awesome features that CM7 has then i'll make the swap.
From what you guys posted it seems like the G2X has better stability and development. And yes i am talking about the SGH-T989 i cannot use the international version on T-Mobile as it doesnt support the 1700mhz frequency so i wont get 3G.
I am really liking the SGS2 ive been on youtube looking at different videos and it looks pretty awesome. Plus the super amoled display is stunning. Also, to the person who commented on the SGS2 having a lower resolution, what exactly do you mean? Are you saying the 800x400 is too small for the size? The screen is only .2 inches bigger than my HD2 which has the same resolution and i dont see it a problem. I might get the SGS2, i do really like the Amoled display. Ugh decisions decisions xD
Thanks all for the awesome information!
Got another question, 7o both phones support more than two finger multi touch?
