[Q] ICS source released - Samsung Infuse 4G

http://www.androidcentral.com/ice-cream-sandwich-source-code-now-being-pushed-git-servers
Question about the process.
So if you have source available what does it take to adopt for Infuse? Is it a huge endavour and might never happen or it's something feasable?

I fear we would need some help from Samsung for a relatively working port to be possible, please correct me if I am wrong though. If it was possible it would probably be along the lines of CM7 as in there would still be Bluetooth issues and such because of our unique hardware. I love my Infuse and hope we can get a semi working port, but I will probably be jumping ship when devices start rolling out with ICS.

At a minimum:
1. Get AOSP working with our bootloaders.
2. Get our drivers integrated into the source.
3. Get the kernel configured correctly.
There are going to be other issues to consider as well. For example, the ICS launcher is hardware accelerated. Depending on how other implement it our hardware might not be able to handle it.
Just as an example: compiling the ICS launcher from scratch at the GB 2.3.3 level produces over 800 errors. I've narrowed most of them down to the HA features of the ICS API. Google has released a "support package" to help with development, but I don't know how much it is going to help because it hasn't finished downloading yet

The Infuse can definitly handle it, its just the probability is becoming zero, the Infuse is being sold for 1 penny online now. I am pretty sure they are in the first stages of getting rid of our infuse from the market.

correct me if I'm wrong, but there has been no action on Samsung/AT&T related to I997 since its release, and in a matter of few weeks it flew from $ 200 to free/$0.01, weird way of doing business

But the HTC hero is getting ics ported to it right now as we speak...isn't that cool...:-/

I'm fine with what I've got. What does ICS have that's making everyone here wet themselves??
I have a feeling Samsung will release ICS for the SkyRocket by March. AT&T on the other hand..... but that's pretty cool because with all of the ROMS available (and hopefully upcomming ROMS and MODS) the current OS is still pretty cool and highly functional. I have one question Sean. IS there or will there be a way to enable NFC on the stock ROM. I don't want to keep beating this into the ground, but with ICS a ways off, NFC would be a nice addition to the stock ROM. Someday I will be ready to try different ROMS (more than likely one of yours), but until then I'm going to stick with stock. Thanks.

Skyrocket uses the same sound chip (yamaha), so it'd destroy it on the SR also.
Our ICS dev is even more destroyed by the fact that we have a different SoC, we'd honestly probably have to take the code from something like the Vivid or the Rezound for the drivers for the CPU, GPU, stuff like that, correct me if I'm wrong here dev's.

Bought you a couple of beers for your hard work too...
This is my first android phone regardless, so gingerbread is still cool with me. But i would like to get ICS eventually. But i take it we have to wait for samsung to roll out their update before we can start making true ICS roms. Sky ice cream sandwich is holding me over anyway.
I know the ICS beta leaked for the galaxy s2, just not skyrocket. So at least they are working on something over there.

Well, for starters, it's the first Android OS that's actually built to utilize dual core processing (not the case for Gingerbread). For everything else, try doing some actual reading on ICS sometime.

It's the single biggest leap the OS has ever taken (particularly on phones, since it incorporates all the advancements of Honeycomb as well).
It's much faster, optimized for dual core, features a fully hardware accellerated UI so everything is much smoother and more responsive, much improved multi-tasking support, a major redesign to the actual look, and improvements to most of the native google apps.
If the firmware of your phone is at all a concern to you, ICS is a pretty big deal. It doesn't reinvent the Android experience, but it's as major of a refinement as we've ever gotten.

I believe he may have been talking about this. It's an ICS build from qualcomm for the MSM8660 processor... which just happens to be the processor we have on the skyrocket.

Want ICS on SGH-i997? Emailing Samsung wouldn't hurt.

Though I may or may not make Samsung change its mind and release an official ICS update, there's no harm done with emailing Samsung about your disappointment that they've basically stopped giving full support to a device less than a year old.
On a blog post, they listed a number of devices that are getting ICS updates, namely the Galaxy R, Galaxy II, and the Galaxy note, along with a few tablet models.
Though the Infuse is older than all these models, it is still only older by a few months, and is still well under a year old. Still, it was only officially revealed in May, close to the date of the Infuse's release, so this might be a good enough (perhaps even valid) excuse for why it is not getting an official upgrade.
Why is an official upgrade so important? Because it's the easiest way that we'll see modified ICS ROMs in the future. Without it, an Infuse ICS ROM is uncertain.
I wrote to them that I liked the SGH-i997 quite a bit, but also that I would not consider buying Samsung products in the future if they drop support for them so quickly. (A better way to have state it may have been "abandon their products and their users after less than a year.") I added that I hope Samsung would reconsider in light of customer feedback and thanked them for their time.
So like I said: it probably won't change a thing, but there's no way it could hurt to apply a bit of pressure.
The infuse is having a hard enough time getting official gingerbread. Good luck with that. Its a waste of time worrying about it.

Trust me, I know it's very unlikely. But nothing ventured, nothing gained.
The worst that could happen is that nothing comes of it.
Nothing is gonna come from it.... Its not gonna happen...they cant even get gingerbread right on our device...they are not gonna attempt ics...and ics is not all that to go thru it...gingerbread is just as good

That's not true at all. ICS runs just fine on the Galaxy S, and it only has 384MB of usable RAM since 128MB of it is used as VRAM.

A better idea would be to post a comment asking for a list of products that they intend to provide quality software support longer than they have the Infuse, so in the future we'd know which one to purchase and which to avoid.

and another thing. has nobody thought of the fact that the Rogers infuse launched with gingerbread. meaning it will most likely get an update to ICS?

My bad Dman I though it would be 1 of those typical phones like my Blackberry. My Blackberry was told it would get the latest and baddest Update, but then later on RIM told us the device was basically a piece of **** and that it didn't have enough ram to run the OS and all the applications. Thanks for clarifying that up, Just noticed Galaxy S was the only phone getting ICS with low ram. Samsung probably had enough trouble getting ICS for the Galaxy S and probably figure it's impossible for the Infuse to ever see it due to all the issues with GB.

yup. need a kernel and branch build from cm9 or port.
512mb ram is not an issue...there are several other devices out there w/ 512. the fat has to be trimmed like d said
imo, aside from the "just so i can have it", gb runs just fine on the infuse.
edit: I wonder if we can get moderator to sticky a line like: "THERE IS NO [email protected]#$% ICS ON THE INFUSE" so we won't be getting this every week or so. The ([email protected]#$%) is optional.

Double post; pardon.

are we beta testers?

Please don't think I'm trying to discredit rootzwiki' or their source for the leak, but do you ever feel like Samsung wanted ics to leak on purpose? I bet you they are just creeping this forum, looking for bugs we find, watching how our devs here tackle them, and make noted and fixes for the next version.
I mean why not? Everyone here who flashed it did it knowing what could go wrong. They didn't send it ota and make customers mad, and Samsung has been pretty root friendly with their hardware. Is Samsung lazy? Stuck on development? Or just needed people to do the dirty work?
If this is the case they know we all hate touchwiz, but I don't see that changing.

LOL all part of the plan I guess. They gave us an unlocked bootloader to make it that much easier!
I'd actually like to think that. That just means a faster OTA for us!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA
More likely the leak comes as a result of a closed soak test beta or something. They're probably aware that it'll leak and don't care too much.
I think the leak is due more to the change.org petition that was started a week or so ago. Samsung probably figured it would passify us enough to not bother them anymore, at least untill JB comes out.
On the other hand, it would not suprise me if they released this "beta" to help get the kinks out before ota.
In the gaming world, Steam let the indie game company Kerberos release Sword of the Stars II and it was like a mid to late alpha version and practically unplayable so they would meet their release date deadline. It was pretty much unplayable but they could get tons of feedback from the people who bought it.

We should hide a string in the code to see if they push our update OTA!
LOL
It sure would be funny to see that pass OTA
I actually contacted them two days ago reguarding when the update to 4.0 or what ever 4.0.? it would be would be coming out. They said, that I would have to ask Google and At&t about it that they didn't have to much to do with it, but do make sure it rolls out smoothly. That's the short of what they gave me.
Why rely on the carriers to do all the dirty work when you can release (or "leak") it and let the masses find all the issues for you? Its a smart thing that companies do all the time. I for one am happy it was "leaked"
I've always been a fan of leaks no matter what the phone, but being coming from a locked bl to a new device, recovery, etc catching up on the SGSII Skyrocket wasn't hard. But that build for being a leak was so complete it was stunning. And the devs jumped on it like hyenas on carrion. Lol. As we love them for doing so.
Part of me can't wait for the AOSP and Source to get out for their "Official" OTA. That's where the fun begins....

I'm done with buying brand new phones and flashing this or that AOSP port while all the kinks get worked out.
Better to stick with the S3 until ROM's & accessories are widely available for the S4.
Oh, but I WILL be going S4 as soon as that first killer AOSP ROM is finally bug free.
It took three months on the S3 for that to happen. Then it sucked again while everyone dumped the ICS AOSP before finishing adding all the extra super cool features, and instead started working on JB AOSP. Which took another three months to get all the features & bugs worked out.

Woah, that sounds cool, I even thought face detection was something...

Right.
Age has probably just caught up with me as I do not feel the urge to flash my phones anymore.
Even my good ol' international GS1 isn't up to par anymore even though I still use it almost every day.
It's lagging at leat 4 versions behind in both ROM and kernel lol
We might not even have to wait for a port. Look at the comments in that article, someone with a leaked 4.2 for i9300 (international GS3) shows a screenshot with "Smart Scroll"!
Worthiness: I worry about implementation. Facial recognition is nothing new; we've had that for decades. Retinal recognition (or pupil, I guess) sounds too new. And will it work everywhere? Do all apps have a "scroll" function? What about Flipboard and Currents, which are more like "next page" functions?

Agreed... even today's AOSP ROMs for the i747 still suck IMHO !!
No offense to the devs, there just not there yet for me to hop on the train... but they're getting closer by the day!

You're really missing out then. Some of the new 4.2.2 ROM's like CyanogenMod, LiquidSmooth and Vanilla Rootbox are pretty freakin incredible lately. All the good options are starting to go back into the AOSP ROM's now. And these are very reliable also.
I haven't had an SOD since 4.1.2.
I am looking foward to seeing this in action maybe i will spend less time cleaning my screen lol

It's not eye-scrolling. It's head-angle detecting. So, if you lean your head "down," it scrolls. And it can be adjusted per application (Chrome and GMail are two 3rd party apps listed with support).

i as well just bought my s3 on a separate line and only cause i bought it refurb for 29$ to hold me off till the s4. but i also agree on waiting the usual 3+ months.
Anybody going for the HTC One? Pretty good specs, really nice looking too, one solid piece of aluminum, deciding between that or s4

Samsung's lack of support for my note and this phone make me unlikely to but another Samsung product in the future.

ICS Firmware Update ROM (If possible)

Is there even such a thing or are all of them just themes with some tweaks and not actual version updating custom roms?

The Sidekick has been a Froyo-only device so far. We may be getting a Gingerbread port soon....
A true version of android ported to the Sidekick ANY would be godsend to us all xD we've been on Froyo since launch. I would cut the tip of my pinky off for ICS .-. .... I'm not even joking. I wouldn't miss it.
Actually, never thought of this, but what are the odds we could even back-port to eclair or vanilla???????
By the way, why did you post this in the dev section? o.o

Sadly, not even close. But if we could find some devs looking for a challenge then we may someday. I mean, I know the Kick can handle it, I own an Optimus T and that has 4.2 and AOKP, Cyanogen and a whole lot of roms. On a 600mhz processor. Crazy right?
But as said by ged said, we may soon have a GingerBread port I'm excited about that.
I'll ask a couple devs I know (and possibly post a thread in the general section to see if anyone interested). I don't think any device should be stuck on froyo. For Gods sake, the HTC Dream can run freaking JB!!!

Nobody wants to work with this device dude to all the childish rants that went on here in 2012 and this forum is perceived as filled with teenagers who are clueless My opinion...

Which is a sad thing. I'm a bit older than a teenager myself (and I hopefully act like it!). We've been waiting this long for a update past Froyo. Hopefully, it will finally happen.

Shortly after that, I went and bought myself a Galaxy S2, and to be completely honest, I regret doing so. I wish I had bought the S3 instead, or even the Nexus 4, even though it has only 16GB max, no removable battery or sd card slot.

If only. I can afford a new phone by a huge margin, but I have to wait until the end of my contract next December.
