I don't know if anyone has had this problem but I'm using the KH2 modem, FW, and Kernel and sometimes when I'm on FB or browsing the web, the modem stays halfway lit...and it stays that way and I can't load or refresh. The only way to reset it is by deactivating the mobile network, waiting 10 seconds, and re-tick it. Is it a problem with the modem, kernel, or what...I would like my web connection to always be on and not give me any problems, plz help.
Are you getting full signal?

I'm on the Audiophile ROM...so the little phoenix/bird is full. The modem starts at 4 when I restart the phone, then it turns into H and the top half of the circle stays lit and doesn't turn off. I didn't change anything when I installed it. Everything is KH2.
Have you tried flashing a different modem to see if it helps?
That's the thing, I don't know what modems are good to use with KH2.

Any of the GB modems will work with it. Different people report different performance with different modems. From a 4G/carrier data network perspective, from what I've read it just depends on where you are as to which modem works the best. I can't say that's been the case for me; 4G just sucks in my area.
FBis251 was kind enough to compile a list of them that are flashable via ODIN or CWM. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192436
I would suggest trying one (KJ6 is reported to have better wifi performance for a lot of users, but your mileage may vary) and see if it makes a difference.

So I had one Nexus S (#1) for about a month and I have another Nexus S (#2) that I got few days ago.
#1 had terrible signal strength. Many times, it had 1-2 bars and I believe that it hardly had 4 full bars. Moreover, 3G connection would switch to EDGE constantly, especially when on the move (e.g. car). Download speed was kind of slow too. But since this was my first 3G device [I had old Windows Mobile phone], I wasn't quite sure if this was normal.
However, no random boot or many of the problems pointed out at XDA.. maybe except for back button that doesn't respond from time to time.
#2 has great signal strength. It stays usually at 4 full bars and I don't think I've ever got EDGE connection this time. Internet is very fast. It downloads app within a few second. No random boots or back button issue.
I bought my NS around end of December a week or so after it came out.
I usually get 3-4 bars reception, but where I live I think my reception is pretty crappy since I'm sort of on the edge of the coverage zone of the tower. It get's much better reception when I'm outside though. My DL speeds are crap however. I've yet to hit 3+mbps downloads or 1.5+mbps uploads
update your radio to KB3 (or KB1) see which one is better for you. you can find it on the dev forums
If I update the kernel (I was looking at voodoo) and use the stock rom, would this be considered rooting and not legal? I kind of want to use voodoo but I still want to keep the stock rom.

Voodoo is not a kernel, its a MOD that is embedded within a kernel. Most NS kernels feature Voodoo Color & Sound. I recommend Netarchy's 1.2.5a
The Nexus S is created to be rooted and hacked. XDA is a forum for people modding their phones with modified kernels/ROMs/etc, Google isn't going to knock on your door and arrest you for doing this. No need to be scared.

I guess I'll start looking into various ROMs but one of the focal point of purchasing NS was to use the stock..
it was mentioned to wait 24-48hrs after flashing a radio to see effects of battery life, radio signal, etc... but i have yet come across the reason.
i just reflashed the same coredroid + suggested radio/RIL after something wrong happening to my phone. however i noticed before i had full bars of signal and now i am down to 1 or two bars.
is that because the flash was just complete?

The reason is because the effects of a radio change aren't necessarily going to be so drastic that you'll be able to tell after five minutes. If they are drastic in a bad way, it may be because you have a mismatched RIL, need another reboot, other types of little adjustments to get the radio going....They take time to settle in.
And the difference in battery will probably be even more subtle.
Let it "smooth out," then you can better gauge whether it was an improvement or not.
For your low bars issue, try reflashing the radio, sometimes a double flash of the same radio has been known to help. Reboot twice. Same thing... Another "voodoo" radio fix.
Like I also said above, make sure you have the right RIL for your ROM/radio.
And it's not because of an "incomplete radio flash." It either flashes completely, fails to even start the flash, or if you have really bad luck, your phone bricks.

Now... that's what I call scary eeks!
I 100% recommend the double flashing of radios. In two separate occasions i've had problems with download an upload speeds and NOTHING seemed to fix the problem except for reflashing the radio. I tried flashing different radios, rils, roms and only flashing the same radio twice fixed my speed problems.
I'm no expert in any of this nor can I guarantee the same results but it's also something to keep in mind besides the settling of your radio for a couple of days.

Hey all,
I still conisder myself a n00b when it comes to all this, although I've somehow managed to get GB on my phone via Odin (the only software I know how to use!) from the dev section
Here's what I have right now:
Baseband version: T959VUVKG4
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-T5959VUVKG4-CL385158
Since the upgrade, the phone's been a lot faster, battery life has increased almost two-fold and overall the phone seemed to perform better. Only issue was the extremely low wifi calling.
In the past month or so, my phone has turned for the worst. Random reboots, even during calls, slow, buggy, programs closing, dropping calls etc. Overall, its a real piece of crap!
Ultimately, I`d like to know the EASIEST way to put GB on the phone, with the most reliable ROM and modem out there. I dont need anything fancy shmancy...just something rock solid, with good call reception, and, because T-Mobile sucks, I need WiFi calling to work properly.
All I really know how to use is Odin. Can anyone help?
Well...if you read any thread....any GB ROM u flash sucks ass with wifi. sorry
On a side note, some people have been getting improved wifi with the kj3 modem flash over kj1 ROM.

You should try FBis251's ext4 starter thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16762954
After following all the steps you can flash any GB rom you'd like
I know starting over is a pain in the arse, but take it from me it's DEFINITELY worth it. I'm running Valhalla 1.32 OC/UV and getting quads well over 3000 (not that it means anything ) and my phone has never been smoother. Plus switching between roms is much easier. No more factory resets

Yes, much easier after you read FB's starter thread. I've proudly flashed 3 or for times since adding a ROM with CWM. I'm running BSGS4G and dsexton's adrenaline shot and have no problems.

Honestly, as of now, I would go for either KH2, KI3, or KJ3. Those seemed to be the most stable of the GB releases.
Now for your issues:
Random Reboots: If you have a task killer, remove it and never touch it again. Android doesn't need a task killer. It kills necessary apps and causes your phone to reboot. I've been there before.
Voodoo: Make sure you have drhonk's custom GB kernel. Follow those instructions (for the parts that say adb, just reboot to recovery by using volume up, volume down, and power). Having the custom GB kernel will give you Voodoo support = lagfix = faster phone.
Speed: Be sure to let your dalvik cache rebuild every time you flash a ROM or do anything that wipes it. If it is not rebuilt, your phone WILL be laggy. Give your ROM 15 minutes to rebuild the dalvik cache, then start tinkering with it. To wipe your dalvik cache manually, you can go to CWM > Advanced > Wipe Dalvik Cache.
Bugs: Flash the newer GBs, like the ones I mentioned above, and it'll probably be better. WiFi still sucks regardless on all GB builds.
Dropped Calls: I'm assuming you came from stock KD1, and your signal was perfectly fine then? If that's the case, look for the KD1 modem on this forum and flash. That should fix up your reception issues.
I use Valhalla 1.1 with Dolphin Mini browser,
Adrenaline shot XIX and KJ1 modem.
You can ask me how to do anything, i will answer you.

Well since you are on KG4 you should have the GB bootloaders so you should be alright to flash any GB rom using CWM. It sounds way trickier than it is. It is really just as easy as Odin.
Now unfortunately as mentioned above... The low Wifi signal is a problem with GB on our phone. If Wifi calling is a MUST... you will be better off on Froyo until an official update is released with improved wifi... but then you lose all the goodies of GB (battery life, speed, etc)
From what I have gathered on here in seems KI3 seems to work with helping peoples wifi signal but it is still not the same as froyo.

Exactly right. I'm using Valhalla 1.3.2(I highly recommend this ROM) with the ki3 modem and my wifi reception is as good as it will get on GB. I just wish Samsung would release that darn kernal for GB already so the devs can fix it ;P

Since you're already on kg4 with bootloaders just odin flash a root to it then get dr honk kernel with.voodoo.
thats for the tips guys!
My main issue with the wifi calling is not the wifi signal (its decent actually), its just the VOLUME of the wifi calling....it works, but I cant actually hear the person! I dont think this has to do with the wifi signal quality.
I appreciate all the tips...if someone would like to help me, step by step (you can PM me if you want), because all this stuff is confusing!
Hey all, this is my first post I've been reading, following and searching ever since I signed up while staying quite.
I have a SGS2-LTE SGH-727R on the Rogers network.
I've been running the SKY-ICS rom for about a month with no problems and decided to try this new UCLA3 modem today when people reported faster network speeds.
So I flashed the UCLA3 modem and reinstalled SKY-ICS clearing the cache, data, dalvik and everything worked fine except for my SMS messages which had the wrong timestamps.
So I figured it was the modem that did this so I reinstalled the stock rogers tar file through ODIN and that didn't change the modem back to stock so I downloaded the Rogers one from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20159562#post20159562 rooted the phone and installed rogers modem and reinstalled SKY-ICS and it still doesn't work properly but it does show UXKJ7 under baseband version.
So how do I get this thing back to normal? Without having to use another app to fix the timestamps.
I'm on stock Rogers ROM and I have that problem. Always have even on my i9000. Depends on who's txting me. Been using SMS Time Fix from the market to fix the incoming time stamp.
Ya actually i just flashed the new modem and now i am having the same problems with the time stamps. never had it before now so it might be the modem paired with the rogers phones ? i really dont know but in appdroids rom "unnamed rom" one of the feature is time stamp hack/fix so im wondering if he may have a solution
I think I got my phone fixed. It's been over a day with no text message timestamps issues. I'll repost if I do get any problems.
What I did was flash the official rogers rom with ODIN using the tar file from sammobile.com (I can't post outside links because I'm still in noob status) this tar file contains all the files you need to get back to 100% stock. The k0nane tar file I used before doesn't restore the modem so it doesn't completely return it to stock.
After that I just rerooted and reinstalled SKY ICE rom and everything is back to normal before flashing the UCLA3 modem.
I don't know why this worked and just flashing the modem alone back to Rogers UXKJ7 in CWM didn't work.
Also I think this method increases your flash counter but mine was already at 2 so it didn't matter to me.
MIne are also fixed and this might sound weird and unbelievable but i wonder if it was day light savings time taht was screwing my phone up becase all the messages would come in an hour later and then next day when my phone automatically updated time and date to go with the new daylights saving time it was all fixed. Just soomething im wondering about

Weird
Are you still on the UCLA3 modem?
When I had that modem since March 8th some of my text messages had good timestamps and some of them had timestamps that were up to 5 hours behind.
Ya i am still on it on the nexus mod 4 but my battery is dying like crazy and i cant seem to figure out why. Android system seems surprisingly high like 48% but i dont know how to fix it. Any ideas and also a quick question. DId you notice a speed increase when you started using the UCLA3 modem compared to the old rogers one? Thanks man
I didn't see any speed difference with back to back tests with both modems.
Check your running services see if anything weird is running.

ya i did and it was outrageous i would lose like 40% in 4 hours of standby which was just insane. so i moved back to quikwiz and a rogers modem and the new 010 faux kernel. battery life is back up and booming and faster than it was on the ucla3 modem. but thats just my opinion/tests i guess how about you any opinion about rogers is welcome here please

OK so I've had this problem with ever ROM except original touchwiz ROMs. My 3g and 4g will random stop working and it reconnects maybe after a reboot or just whenever. This is quit frustrating and in tired of using my internet when something else wants me to.
If you know whats wrong and the solution that would be awesome if you don't. Then please don't respond.

Too general. If you want help you need to be specific. What is your current ROM? What is your baseband version? Saying "every ROM" tells us nothing.

Okay so I all the basebands k3 k4 and uxm whatever. I wipe everything.I use cwm. And im telling every rom but the ones thqt are stock. As in miui cm 10 aokp asop pac man everything pretty much. Only oone that works is touch wiz roms. Like embryo
I think i have a similar problem. I was getting all sorts of weird reboots on stock so decided to try CM10 stable. Love everything about it but having issues with the signal. Have tried 4 or 5 different basebands - currently using i727UCLL3. when i have signal its great, but i have spotty reception at work. Once the phone looses the signal, about half the time it doesn't pick a signal back up unless i put it in airplane mode, then usually it refreshes and is ok for a while. however sometimes, even when it looks like i have signal, i have no internet connectivity and have to reboot the phone to get everything working again - this happens every 2-3 days usually on average. I'm in the philly area so based on the name of the original guy posting maybe its a more local issue but who knows. any help appreciated. thanks!
hey my name is philly lol. but i do live in VA so maybe its a region thing idk. still no fix. only thing that works which isnt worth it half the time, is embryo its CONSTANT 4g no problem. but for me that battery life is awfull.

I think he was referring to the battery life issue. Battery life is extremely subjective and based on each user's habits and settings. Other Embryo users are able to get less "awful" battery life, hence "User error."
No one has the formula for best battery life because everyone's usage varies. There are all sorts of guides, tips and tricks on here to help extend your battery life. Mitigating wakelocks should always be the first place you look to extend your battery.
