I have tried most of the custom roms posted here some of which are excellent but i always revert to stock rooted roms as all custom roms seem to have inherent bugs to a greater or lesser extent (as do stock roms i'm afraid but bugs are minimal).
I find stock roms much better than many people on this forum would have you believe but would always recommend rooting and having a custom recovery installed as this gives you options to sort out any problems that you may have and also you can install your own prefared customisations if you wish.
I would strongly recommend stock rooted 3.5 based on HTC Sensation 2.08.401.1 RUU which is provided by EddyOS.
I personally prefer custom roms. Although it is possible to find bugs, they are usually dealt with very quickly by the developers. I agree that you should definitely have recovery installed and if this is done then there is no reason why you can't try out a few roms. I don't think any one rom is best suited to a phone, it all depends on what you want out of your phone. If you don't like it you can always change it back, as long as you made a backup.
HTC Sensation LeeDroid V4.0.0
It's up to you really, I personally can't resist the temptation of Custom ROMs. I kept changing between them, on average flash once a week
You get a lot of different experience with each ROM because they are made by different people, therefore with different intentions and features, some will fit you whiles others won't. The whole point is to find the difference and find one that you likes best. After a few ROMs you will know what fits you, and which DEV you want to follow

I got my sensation last week. It's rooted, and clockwork is already installed on it. I had CM7 on it for about 5 minutes, but I liked the Sense UI better so I just went back to stock because I didn't have time to look for a SENSE Custom ROM.
I'm wondering if it's worth it to go off stock and go to a Custom Sense ROM? I saw Android Revolution HD, and I think the only step I'm missing is that Radio S-OFF.
Anyways, is it worth it to go to a Custom ROM or just stay stock? It's pure preference probably, but pros, cons kind of thing I'm leaning towards yes because I like that ARHD 1.5ghz oc. =)
Im using ARHD 3.6.0 and im loving it.
Better battery, snappier, plus you can flash themes and mods
I would definitely go with any custom rom over stock.
If you rooted with revulutionary you are good to go (already have radio S-OFF)
i like Sense 3.0 but CM7 have more performance
just got my sensation yesterday and played around all day in stock just to get a good feel for it before going to a custom rom which was a definite. i went for android revolution and it's definitely snappier. apps load faster, and the ones that access the web seem to do it faster too.

I didn't root using the methods of revolutionary. If I want to install Revolutionary how would I go about it? I can safely install CM7 already. I still have to do that Radio S-OFF don't I?
Is it just me or does the use of the word "snappier" as in, "it feels snappier now" make you feel that it really isn't much of a difference? When I used to want to tout the speed of some device or app I would say it was faster but I would use the word "snappy" if I couldn't really justify the use of the word "fast".
That being said, when I moved onto the Sensation I tried to go through all the hoops to get off stock but then realized it was just a waste of time considering my Sensation is perfectly fast and stable as is.

Follow this method to get S-OFF, from what I read it also RADIO-OFF's for you as well. Its what I did to flash rev. HD

That's the method I used to S-OFF. Is it the same as Revolutionary's Radio S-OFF?
Try pyramid3d. Its a good rom

hi guys, I come from an hd2....so I know cwm, android and the process of flashing...
but I have some questions...
are the 4.0.3 roms stable? have you got any suggestion for a good rom?
when I flash ICS from GB have to full wipe? I know that if I don't wipe the data/factory reset keep my personal data, but ICS is a big update...if I don't wipe my data will be lost? or the rom could not run the previous apps and read my data? maybe they are in a different folder in GB...or ICS...
doing the s-off, cwm and root my warranty expires...can I restore the phone like new without risks of bricking?....the procedure of s-on is really dangerous or is just for the disclaimer?
thx in advance. you guys are awesome
First of all, welcome to the Sensation family

4.0.3 roms are stable, especially now that the devs are using base 3.32. 3.32 will be the official ICS update for the Sensation so you can count on it for daily use

Generally if you're coming from GB or coming from other devs roms, a superwipe is recommended to avoid headaches. You can use apps to backup SMS/Call log and Apps+data. For apps+data, I recommend using Titanium Backup.

Based from what I've read, yes, S-ONing is dangerous and a couple of people have bricked their Sensations because they haven't followed instructions properly so there is an inherent danger doing it. (I haven't done it myself)
+ 1 to all the above!
And as far as roms go, it depends what you want:
*there is an 'official' HTC ICS build out there, if you want to keep relatively similar to stock sense then that is the one for you
*Virtuous Inquisition is the best AOSP (vanilla ICS) rom I've tried, it's not quite perfect yet (only a few minor niggles like the lockscreen music widget not showing up or not displaying the correct track, minor, but still slightly annoying) but is definitely stable enough for daily use, and is damn slick!
*my own personal choice and the rom I've been using for a while now is Darkforest 5.5.0 coupled with Nova Launcher from the market, it's now sort of a hybrid of Sense and vanilla ICS. Using the Nova Launcher means I can't use the HTC widgets (that I really like) but it does have a boatload more customisation options than plain old Sense.
Hope this helps at all

I shall be interested in this, finally made up my mind to go for a Sensation XE
swapping my Iphone 4 for one.
didn't want to go back to a Samsung Galaxy s2 prefer sense UI and used to have an HD2 also so great to see so many developers that used to work on the HD2 on this Sensation area.
Hopefully I will not be disappointed
i also need help if anyone can...my revolutionary gets stuck at the 1St attempt of fastboot, I also have hboot 1.18. debugging is on, fastboot is off, no HTC sync is installed that I know of &I used "universal naked driver beta" as my drivers for the sensation. what must I do now for me to get this s-off?

first...thank you all very very helpful
now....what is vanilla ICS?...and what are shipped roms?
I want keep GB now, for compatible apps...
s-off s for unlock bootloader...cwm we know...rott (I don't need if I flash a custom rom...)...but do I need superCID for flashing? what is it?
hey, I don't understand some things...well, my sensation have the brand...this means I have to change my cid? for flash roms?
in my case, can you tell me what have I got to do for full unlock my phone and be able to flash anything I want?...
Vanilla ICS is the standard version of Android on the Galaxy Nexus (vanilla because it is plain, lol)

ok, thanks, but, some things are not clear....too many things....
change the cid is useful just if I want install a custom rom with customRUU method....right?
for install via cwm superCID is not needed?...
some roms need 4ext recovery....do you suggest me to use that and not cwm?...
I read about hboot....it's the system partition size, right?....have I got to change it for flash some roms? if I do something wrong with hboot I may brick my phone...

Hboot= bootloader. Messing around with it can brick your device , if you don't know what you are doing. There are firmware upgrade files that include hboot+radio and are needed for some roms to boot.
Supercid is needed only if you are messing with firmware upgrades and ruus. That has to do with regions.
4ext is a recovery fully compatible with cwm. It just has a nicer ui.

OK, I recently flashed a HD2 for a friend so I know where you are coming from:
1) Do super CID, it is an easy process, with no risk , it does not break your warranty, and it will save you problems (soon you'll update to ICS and it is better to be super CID).
2) I did S-on myself after being S-Off to return my phone for the dust in screen issue. The process is fairly straightforward and if you follow instructions correctly there is no risk. The risk of bricking exists if you do things without FULLY reading all instructions.
3) No need to mess around with system partitions etc. Sensation is a phone that has plenty of space for current ROM's and apps so the flashing process is much simpler than with HD2. Just use your favorite recovery, wipe, and flash... as simple as that (of course, I am talking about GB, to upgrade to ICS the process is different).
4) I suggest you use 4ext, as you say, some dev use it because it gives you the option to make selections during the flashing process.
ok thank you all....
there are so many roms, but....I can't find what i'm searching...
I want try 3 type roms:
-an ics galaxy nexus
-a sense 3.5 without any....UI customizations, bootscreen ecc, I have flashed 5 minutes ago a 3.5 with transparency, custom icons and other features I don't like....so, I want a stock like rom
-an ics 3.6 sense stock like....
how I switch from cwm to 4ext?

Just to clear it up, Virtuous Inquistion is not a true AOSP ROM. It's just a sense-based ROM themed/modified to match ICS

True, but it does a pretty good job of it, the only things of Sense they have left in are things that either didn't work from AOSP, or things that were better than the AOSP counterparts. Off the top of my head I think all I noticed was the camera, there may have been more underneath the operating system I wouldn't have noticed without looking, but it's still as close as you'll get to vanilla ICS on a Sensation at the moment
hey guys,
So im still on Gingerbread. Thinking of finally upgrading to ICS. I have a Tmo Sensation 4g.
So I was going to use this guide to follow as the upgrade procedure to ICS:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1472298
But instead of flashing the exact rom in the guide, I was thinking of flashing a non-sense version...
So 2 questions:
1. Can I just follow that guide and flash any ICS rom, or since Im following that guide do i need to flash the same rom that is in that guide rom? If I do flash the rom in that guide, since Ill be on the correct firmware, can I just go then and flash any of the new ICS Roms?
2. what would you guys consider to be the most stable, cleanest, or best non Sense/Senseless/ or Sense-stripped ICS Rom?
Thanks so much everyone. I realize there are lots of related posts, but I cant find an exact answer for my question
If you want a non-sense rom, flash the Virtuous Inquisition. It's pretty stable and i highly recommend it. Remember to flash the 3.32 firmware before flashing the rom.
And no, you don't have to flash the rom found in the guide if you don't want to.
thanks.
another quick question.
when ICS roms first started coming out, i seem to remember that there was some sort of setting where you had to enable or force both cores to run. is this still the case? if so, how?
thanks
Go with HyperNonSense, its really the only functional "no sense" ROM at this time. It also happens to be pretty good!
thanks for the response
i was thinking of going with Virtous Inquisition... but have not flashed it yet. Can you please tell me why Hypernonsense would be a better choice?
Thanks

Agree with this guy. Try it out yourself!
As for the other guy, he claims it's the only functional "no-sense" Rom without any backup/proof... It's already clear here that it's all opinion. I wouldn't believe him and I think he's just blurting that out, due to love for his fav rom. I'd do the same!
i use hypernonsense 1.5
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350492
thanks for all the responses. I first flashed ARHD ICS from GB yesterday as my first ICS rom. then i flashed hypernonsense due to the suggestion above as i am completely sick of sense.
all I can say is wow. this is by far the most i have loved my phone in a long time. will probably try VI at some point or any other non sense roms. but after leaving sense, I sure can not see myself going back to sense.
I used to have a first gen mytouch3g, then Vibrant, and now I finally like my Sensation
if anyone has yet to try a non sense rom, I strongly urge you to try one. the phone is so damn buttery smooth and it feels like a completely different phone
In sense roms i prefer : ARHD , InsertCoin
Non sense : Virtous , hypernosense

Hello all,
Sorry for this daft question, but haven't been on here for months. Just wanted to know the best or most common used ICS rom you guys are using on your Desire S as I'm well behind.
I have a UK phone and was unlocked using htc dev. I only want to upgrade if all features work. Any reccomendations ?
cheers
S-off it for wider costum rom support, and flash Fallout 5. It's on Sense 4, and pretty stable.

I think, one of the most stable and pretty working ICS is Fallout 5.
Used it about few month, all was fine.
Now using Jelly. Not so stable and some functions didnt work correctly, but its faster

well to be honest custom roms arent for everyone, i know its tempting to want to flash a custom rom and see if things are better, but if u r happy with sense then i suggest just use the ruu from htcdev.com to get the official ics update. i have been using it since a couple of weeks and havent had any issues with it other than whatsapp hanging when u try to open link received through whatsapp. other than that its been smotth sailing, better than gingerbread and sense 3
i have used the miui ics rom and didnt like it much other than that i have tried the cyanogenmod 7.2 for desire s but my personal opinion is that custom roms are not always the most stable and if u r not into heavy customization then i would suggest just skip flashing a custom rom and stick with original htc rom.
cm9_nk111
ICE_DS is the one i choose. Stable and fast, no problems with.
But i think it's time to try Fallout.
Sorry for being a complete noob but I recently converted to Android. :3 Are all these ROMs, mods and themes compatible with every single HTC Sensation? I have a Z710A and am really confused about this..
Yes however you have to Have proper firmware for ics roms.. also there are certain ways to flash the roms according to weather you are s off or s on. And of course you must be rooted. In my opinion it's much easier done if rooted and s off. To explain all this it's much easier if you read the guides then you can understand a bit better. Hope this helps. As for the mods yes there compatible with sensation however some are dependant on which rom your running. Such as a sense rom, or a jelly bean rom. They will state in the title which rom they are compatible with.
