Been playing around with the camera since yesterday and I have to say I'm mildly disappointed. My Samsung Vibrant shot excellent photos for a cell phone camera (my daily driver is a Canon 5DMKII).
Looking at the specs and the size of the sensor this should be a dead ringer for top camera, but the dynamic range seems to be worse than the Vibrant and compression more heavy.
Are there good camera app alternatives that can use the Optimus/G2x hardware?

I've been using Vignette with my G2, and now that I have a G2X, this app comes in handy even more... besides taking really good quality shots... you can set the volume button as your shutter button. Voila: you got a physical camera button on your G2X.

This is the MIUI Camera app. It's a full screen camera app. Works better than default app. Download it and change the extension to .apk and install it via package installer or adb.
Camera 360 is a wonderful camera app
Makes ur camera work amazing wonders
Worth buying
But there are ways

Try lgCamera from the market, there's a free version too. It's made for LG phones, so hopefully it will work well.
It adds support for autofocus in video mode! I hope that feature works for the G2x

This is a great app. Thank you so much for the post. I recommend this for all G2x users!
i personally would not use MIUI as HD 720P seems not to work
BUT on the plus side it is made by XDA-Developers
they always make good stuff and are the leaders in innovations for the smart-phone market
(shameless plug maybe I'll get a cookie for it )
i don't see how this app would do anything to improve image quality on the G2X
as the app was generally made to replace the clunky and overblown GUI software that came with the Galaxy S / Vibrant,
so how will that improve the image quality on the G2X
as DataJunkie wants, he did not ask for a better GUI but better quality pictures

I use camera 360 ultimate, i love that app, is awesome, it has hdr mode and a few other modes, you should try it.

Strange I used to switch between camera 360 and vignette on my MT4G but now when I try those apps on this phone it seems really anyone else notice this?

These are all really good suggestions, thanks guys.
I think I'm going to do a test with 3 different camera apps and lock down the phone on a tripod to compare. I'm interested in knowing how much the camera is held back by software and how much it can be improved upon.
Now all I want is a cameraphone that can shoot RAW.
Where can I get camera 360? I can't find it in the market?

I was disappointed with the Camera app on my MT4G and went with Camera 360 due to extensive compression (at leat 2 to 1) on stock app.
I think this one is much better, and it makes large files per picture which indicates it does not compress that much. Have you checked out all the settings?
The flash goes off too soon with Camera 360, just tried it out.

I like Camera Zoom FX the best then Vignette. Both of these have hardware hotkeys. Camera Zoom FX has stable shot mode that Vignette doesn't have. Camera360 Ultimate is ok for me. Stock camera app seems to have brightest flash and very noticeable.
Does anybody have a .apk of the MIUI app? I'm having a hard time with the .zip :/

Is there an advanced camera app that works on the G2X? I haven't rooted my phone yet but I'd do it if a rom has a better camera app or something. I'm looking to being able to control my shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and possibly aperture (Although I'm not sure if camera phones even have adjustable aperture).
Camera360 has a good amount of options, you should check that out.
When They took the lg camera away I tried every camera app in the market and none of them were any good I wasted alot of money buying the pro versions and they all sucked most were not even as good as the stock vanilla android camera that we go with the GB update and certainly not as good as the froyo LG camera app. Sorry to sound negative. On a good note you can now get the LG froyo camera on GB it has been done I have it and you dont even need to be rooted
Please explain how you got the LG Cam without being rooted...

I've recently purchased Camera Zoom FX (after using Camera 360 for a while). It works with the front-facing camera and has some good basic requirements. It also has tons of extras I will probably never use, but then I just want to take a fast shot that is clear and crisp.

Thanks for all the help guys. Camera360 doesn't have any of the exposure settings I wanted except for white balance but I'll root and flash a rom with the LG Cam and see how that goes.
Is it possible to install the stock camera on miui, or any rom? The camera on this rom is horrible, as was CM7. On miui I have no front camera, flash(except on video oddly), zoom, and the quality is not near ad good as the stock camera. So I'd like to keep the custom rom, but use the stock camera, or even a better one if possible and you'd like to suggest.

you can try camera ZOOM fx from the market. i use that if the miui one is not that good at the time.
Hey guys, when I was flashing a stock rom from Samsung, I wonderer, how good pictures you can take with the stock camera app.
The cm9/10 camera app sucks really bad, pictures don't look as goog as the gb camera app.
Also the stock camera app from Gb is better in taking pictures with the front-facing- camera.
So my question is, is it possible to port or implement it into the system of Cm9/10?

Moving to General.
Quality wise, GB - ICS - JB, both the same IMO.
Front facing camera is a problem that will need to be fixed in ICS/JB and not related to the GB app.

What is the best camera app to improve performance? Or is it better to stick with stock?
I find the camera quite frustrating even compared to the google camera - but I don't really want to miss out on any of the built in features, like slow motion recording.
