When I format my card by putting it in the slot my laptop has it doesn't wipe the ext partition... I say this because it's showing that the 2gig card is only a 1.27gig card. This can't be right?

I don't have a card reader so I can't test it but try to right click on My Computer and select manage. Then go into Disk Management.
The problem is windows can't recognize ext partitions so it won't mount them
Otherwise look up a partition manager to run under windows. I always partition under linux or with dedicated tool you boot to off a CD. I am not sure a good one to recommend to run under windows. Maybe someone else can recommend one.
If you made a 4gb ext partition on an 8gb card, windows will now only see this as a 4gb card until you reallocate the ext partition.
I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and I use Paragon Manager to modify the ext partitions. I am not sure if there is a legitimately free version of this program.
Thanks everyone. I'm downloading Paragon Manager now. I made my ext partition too big and want to put more music on there. I also feel like partitioned the card twice... I think I have an ext 2 & an ext 3 partition.

Over the last few months I (like most people here) have tried several roms. I moved from the sdcard that came with the phone to an 8gb, no problems there.
The way I backup my sdcard is I make a folder on my desktop and literally just drag and drop the whole card over, hasn't let me down yet. When I switched I formatted the 8gb card and just copied my latest sdcard backup to the 8gb and everything works great. I am at the point where I have a lot of stuff on there from from things like apps I've uninstalled, etc. and I'd like to clean it up. I have everything I would want to keep backed up on my desktop.
So here is my question:
If I reformat my sdcard will the phone copy/install anything on the clean sdcard it needs to run?
If so then I'm thinking I could just copy what I want (nand backups, pictures, music, etc.)

Yes and yes. I have cleaned house a few times by deleting everything off my 8gb card and bringing back just my pictures, music and backups.
If you are using an ext partition to store apps and want to delete this data, you will need to format this with a program that can handle this ext partition or the easiest way is through recovery (wipe ext partition). Otherwise, if you want to keep your apps on the partition you can just delete everything off the card through windows or even format it there.

I thought that was the case but wanted to make sure.
I haven't had the need to use a2sd yet so that's not a problem.
One more question:
I've formatted and put everything I want to keep back. Should I just reboot or do I need to reflash DC!.0, the reason I ask is because there was literally nothing on the card after formatting (not surprising). So I put HTC Sync back in case I need it, will the phone build the file structure it needs as it needs it or should I do anything else at this point?

You can just reboot. The SD card doesn't have anything on it that would be replaced by flashing anyway. Since you aren't using apps2sd, you could technically have two different SD cards that you swapped in and out. You would just need to unmount and remount them to prevent corruption during the swaps.
Apps save settings on the card, but these will be resaved when you use these apps again. Conversely, the apps you never use again won't be taking up any space now.

No, you can flash back to a stock sense ROM with no problems. What I meant was that you could actually use your phone with no memory card and it would be fully functional except that some apps couldn't save settings and data.
The SD card is completely optional and all the system files and system apk files are stored in your phone's internal memory.

Sorry for the confusion... I understand the phone can operate sans sdcard. if I'm not mistaken I believe I installed HTC Sync on my pc from my sdcard meanin that if I deleted it without backing it up I would have to (Jeez, I just realized what a waste of time this is, but I'm in too deep to stop) get HTC Sync from another source, ie HTC's website?
LOL yeah, you are probably right about HTC sync. I downloaded sync from the HTC website anyway (to make sure I had the lastest version). Besides that, I can't think of anything else on the stock 2gb card that is irreplaceable..

First, I have an 8gb card, but only 7.3 of it is accessable. I have a micro SD card reader, and Gparted. Re-formatted the card a couple of times, and it always comes up as 7.3gigs.
Second, when I rooted my phone, I used the Recovery image Ivanmmj has in the stock 1.5 to root thread here on this forum. Shortly after, I think when I flashed ClockworkMod Recovery, I lost the ability to get into recovery by holding volume up and power. Only volume down and power gets me into a recovery state.
Third, I went into ADB and entered some commands from other places to do stuff to the Sd card, but one command still lingers when I do backup or restores:
E:can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 No such device.
Either that command is blocking off a section of my SD card, or the card just has a bad sector... Any ideas guys?

was gonna say card has bad sector, or clockworkmod has a signiture for that file space like a partition, I have read that clockworkmod does this to phones, this is one reason why they brick, and we are told not to use clockwork for this very reason. there are some very nice features in clockwork mod, but for recovery its best to stay with amonra and use the update.zip to change to clockwork if you need to i have included the update.zip
I have never seen an 8gb card with 8gb accessable. It doesn't sound like anything is wrong here as far as the capacity of your card. My 8gb card has only 7.3 accessable as well. It is standard for any storage medium wether it be an sd card or computer hard drive.
As far as the volume up issue, it has always been volume - for both my phone and my girlfriend's phone. I used the Eris Root For Dummies method for my phone and the One Click Universal Root Method for my girlfriend's. Volume + and end never worked for either phone. Don't know why, but I can get there reguardless.

There is nothing wrong with your SD card.
Hard drive, SD card, and USB thumbdrive manufacturers typically define megabytes, gigabytes, etc as incrementing by powers of 1000. (so 1GB = 1000MB)
Most operating systems & software define megabytes, gigabytes, etc as incrementing by powers of 1024. (so 1GB = 1024MB)
So according to the manufacturer, your SD card has a capacity of 8GB (8000MB)
According to any operating system (Android, Windows, OSX, Linux, etc), your card has a capacity of 7.8GB (8000MB / 1024)
When you format ANY storage medium (hard drive, SD card, etc), the stated capacity of the device and the available capacity will not be the same.
To make matters worse, some of that 8GB/7.8GB (depending on how you measure) has to be used by the file system to figure out exactly where all of your files are being stored on the card.
I don't know if you ever had to use a card catalog system in a library, but think of it this way.
Let's say you build a library capable of holding a thousand books. However, you're not going to arrange the books according to author's names, titles, or the Dewey Decimal System. You're just going to stick them on shelves in whatever order you get them in.
Whenever you need to find a particular book, you're going to need some way of figuring out exactly where it is in the library. So you'd need a card catalog of sorts. This card catalog is going to take up some of the room in your library, meaning you won't be able to store EXACTLY 1000 books anymore.
Okay, it might not be the best analogy in the world, but it's late here and I hope it gets the point across.
From wikipedia: "A general rule of thumb to quickly convert the manufacturer's hard disk capacity to the standard Microsoft Windows formatted capacity is 0.93*capacity of HDD from manufacturer for HDDs less than a terabyte."
So out of that 7.8GB of space, you're only going to be able to use about 7.3GB of it (7.8 * 0.93).
Oh, and as for

I'm not too certain about this, but i believe /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 is the mounting point for apps2sd partitions, assuming the ROM supports them, and if you're running a stock ROM, it won't.
Your recovery image does though, so every time you do a nandroid backup/restore, it checks for an existing partition for apps2sd. Since it doesn't exist, it shows that message. Nothing to worry about.
Hopefully someone who knows a bit more about it can explain it better, but I don't believe that's an actual error in this case.
I do know it doesn't have anything to do with your 8GB/7.3GB issue though.
Did you try partitioning it on your phone to 0? That worked when I had a similar problem.

Just moved from a 8 GB to a 32GB card. And cannot use it...
First I unmounted the old SD card on the phone, and put in the new, unformatted 32GB. I then choose to format it in the phone. Its a Galaxy S GT-9003i with firmware I9003XXKPN v2.3.5
It formated fine. Then I unmounted the new card, plonked in the old card and connected the phone in USB mode to the Macbook. I also connected the newly formatted SD card via a card reader, and it promptly showed up, with the correct free space (although there was a directory on it already called LOST.DIR)
I then copied all apps from the phones 8GB SD to the 32GB card, using the laptop (drag and drop). This also went fine and without a glitch. I then shut down the phone, swapped out the SD cards and booted the phone on again. As expected, it went to do the usual Scanning USB memory. It completed. The space appears to be taken up, but all apps that are on that USB are inaccesible. Their icons grey Androids with a small SD logo in the bottom right corner.
All other apps (the ones on the phone) work fine. The SD card can be used to copy files to on the computer and to take pictures...
Phone is not rooted.

Have you tried rebooting your phone? If it still does not work, try to unmount your SD Card via settings and then wait for it to successfully unmount and then mount again

So, I cannot even find the app2sd app under My Apps on the Google Play store... weird. Its also not listing under Manage Applications. Would this really be the cause of the problem!?

Thanks, but I canot make sense of this. Firstly all apps on the old SD card will never fit onto the phone (8GB, vs 2GB space), and secondly elsewhere online they always talk about copying files to the new card and then inserting that instead of the old one....

When apps are moved to the SD card, it isn't entirely moved to the SD card. Only part of it is, that's why when installing apps the space for apps still decreases. Therefore you should use titanium backup or similar backup programs to move the applications.

Thanks,I had a look at titanium backup, but it requires root access (my phone has not been rooted). I really dont think one should need to root their phone to move from a small to a larger SD card without having to re-install all apps from scratch...!?

Without root you will not be able to backup data(AFAIK)

OK, so I rooted the phone and used Titanium Backup. It created a backup file on the phone memory. I thought, voila, I am good then, popped in the new SD card, formatted it, and did the restore from Titanium Backup... but:
still getting a lot of greyed out files in the application folder and on the home screens... I really cannot believe all this work is needed to swap out SD cards from a smaller to larger capacity! what a pain in the •••

I have the same problem to, just backed up my old 16gb card to my pc, installed and formatted a new 32gb card in my S4 and copied the data back over and all the apps that are on the sd card are showing up grey.
Ok, after a quick google, i've found that making a clone of the card and then copying the clone to the new card works
you can use HDD-Raw-Copy-Tool to do this (you'll have to google it as I don't have enough posts to post external links)

Thanks! Yeah that works perfectly! (Apparently there are some "secure" folders in the SD card that start with a period, and the contents do not get copied at all. Those hold the apps and data.) However after using HDD-Raw-Copy it will create an exact replica of the smaller SD card on the larger one and the larger one will appear to be small too, so you must resize your partition or you won't gain anything, your new card will be exactly the same as the old one! You can use MiniTool Partition Wizard home edition which is free to do this: partitionwizard.com :good:
I had the same problem but I was able to fix without extra software. Took old card out of my phone and installed both externally via flash readers to my pc and copied files from one to the other. View hidden files is turned on just in case any hidden items is also copied. This work great for me all apps are accessible now. Hope this helpped

There are two ways described to do it successfully:
METHOD 1 uses the xcopy (or xcopy32) command in a Cmd Prompt windown on Windows. The /h switch used on the command allows the hidden and system files to be copied!
METHOD 2 uses a straight copy from old SD card to the new SD card (or from old SD card to folder on computer, then from folder on computer to new SD card) using the simple drag and drop on Windows. BUT YOU MUST HAVE WINDOWS EXPLORER CONFIGURED TO SHOW SYSTEM AND HIDDEN FILES!
Just to be clear, the solution to the problem is trivial. You are simply copying ALL the files from one SD card to another. There is absolutely no reason that copying ALL files from one SD card, including the complete file structure, to another SD card should not work. Your phone can't tell that you switched SD cards. It only knows the files and file structure it can see on the SD card and if they are EXACTLY the same as they were before the switch, your phone should work exactly like it did before the switch except now it will see more free storage space on your larger SD card (which was probably your goal in the first place) AND your phone may possibly even run faster by accessing the data much faster if your new SD card is a faster class of storage media.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO ROOT YOUR PHONE OR INSTALL ALL KINDS OF CRAZY APPS ON YOUR PHONE OR SOFTWARE ON YOUR COMPUTER TO DO THIS!!!
BUT, the key is that YOU MUST ALSO COPY ALL THE HIDDEN FILES and there are lots of them on Android! Everytime I hear of someone having a problem with switchinging to a new SD card, it is because they did NOT copy the hidden files OR their SD card was not properly formatted (FAT32) for the phone.

THIS GUIDE IS TO SHOW YOU HOW TO INCREASE INTERNAL MEMORY OF ANY ANDROID DEVICE BY PARTITIONING

This guide will partition your sdcard to make a part of your sdcard works like the internal memory that you can move your apps to it.
This guide will never increase the real internal memory (Storage in taskmanger) as it is impossible to be done.
First,
you have to do is to partition your SD Card and for doing this you have to: Download Mini tool Partition.
2- Install the application on your PC and connect your SD card to your PC with Card Reader.
3- Open Mini Tool Partition in your PC and when the wizards open click on your SD Card and select Delete option. !!!(Note: This will format your SD Card completely mean that it will erase your data permanently, so before doing this backup your data at any place in PC or other Storage device.) When the Formatting of your SD Card is completed then, you have whole of space of your SD Card as unallocated
4- then Right click SD Card and select create option. A popup box will open giving you options for making partition; select the partition as primary and file system as FAT if SD Card is less than 4GB or FAT32 if your SD Card is more than 4GB. Leave about 512 MB or more space (your choice) for creating the next partition.
5- Then select done and do right click on unallocated space of your SD Card and again click create option. Select Primary partition but change the file system to Ext2, Ext3 or Ext4. Note: (Ext2 is recommended as most ROMs work fine with it). Click Apply Changes and then process goes on for the few minutes and then partition is completed.
6- Install Link2sd from Google Play
On the first launch of the app, it will ask for root permissions and then, it will ask you the file system of the .ext partition that you had earlier made, choose the option as you had choose in the partitioning steps.
Sort the apps according to size and start linking them and then you have done your task.
Now you have your Phone’s Internal Memory+ Ext file size made by you in your SD Card. Now you can move your apps from your device memory to SD Card and simultaneously your device speed will also be increased.

OP should give credits to actual OP who took pain to create screenshots.
Also guys dont select storage as "external" in auto link. Link2sd dev recommends "internal" storage to avoid conflicts. Also I see this increases space in internal in storage info.
Ext2 fills up. You see widgets for all linked apps as phone assumes app installed as internal memory.
Also linking better than native app2sd or move to sd method and it retains apps in memory even if sd card is removed!!! during usb connection according to dev.

Also use FolderMount to move huge OBB and DATA files to SD card
I've been using FolderMount along with Link2SD. FolderMount allows you to also move the HUGE OBB and DATA files that large games often make you download (some up to 2 GB!!!) Link2SD does not link these large files (it links APK and other smaller files) so they work together beautifully. Together they are truly huge space savers! Just search for FolderMount on the Play store.

already I have created a partition for 512 mb and I am using Link2sd. Is this now possible to extended the partition with or without loosing the data ?
Thats a good question. There is always a possibility to lose data stored in a partition when resizing any partition file system where it be Linux EXT2,3,4 or Windows Fat and Ntfs. Backup the data in there if you can before attempting it. I personally would use gparted since its already in all my installed linux distros already, but the free Minitool partition editor for Windows looks pretty awesome! It says it easily supports resize/move of partition without data loss so its possible. Just make sure you backup the whole card IE all data on both partitions just in case. Good luck.

Do I absolutely have to use a card reader for this? Can't I use the mount usb storage option from my phone? Either way, the card shows up as an external drive doesn't it?

I can't wait to do this after I root my HUAWEI H881C. I got it a week ago and free internal space for apps and data is rather small at about(?) 512MB total. After factory installed apps and such I was left with about 384Mb to start with. I can be a app whore. I haven't download too many games on google play yet because of internal storage limits. Even with those limits I do have Doom, Quake 1, 2, and 3 installed off the SD card along with my dosbox, snes, sega, psx and n64 emulators and roms with no problems.
I have been using link2sd since abandoning Froyo. Now on cm10.2.
One thing of which to know and be carefull: Link2sd's Achilles Heel.
When flashing a new ROM on rebuilding the dalvik cache for any reason, all the linked dalviks (dex) must fit on internal storage. If one has linked more than can fit, internal storage will run out and crash bang. I have requested of the devs to facilitate treating this within link2sd but so far, has not been implemented so the manual procedure would be:
A. Prevention! If playing with experimental ROMs often, pull the /data/sdext2/dalvik-cache folder and see how big it is. Make sure that the internal space available is say 20meg more than this. No problem.
B. If not possible or simply must have all the goodies installed now, here it what to do:
1. Show linked apps in dex-size order.
2. Multiselect enough of the largest ones to meet the 20meg condition.
3. Remove them.
After flashing, rebuilding the dalvik cache.
4. Relink current dalvik. Now have lots of room again.
5. Restore the removed apps and data, relink them. Note: Titanium is your best friend!

FYI I just did that very same thing just leaving the card in the phone and using the minitool. It seems to have worked just fine even with resizing the fat32 partition already there and creating a Ext2 out of the room I freed up.

Quick question - If you resize the partition which is already there, making space for a new one, will you lose all the data that is there in the card?
I answered that question in my last 2 reply posts. I just did this very thing without any problems or data loss, then went on to root my phone. It all took 20mins and I did copy my sd card contents to a dir in my PC just in case.
There is a always a chance for things to go wrong, but at the very least make a folder on your PC label cellback or something, connect your phone(with card) to PC & just copy all contents from your existing card in phone to that folder you made. Then in partition editor select the drive that is your SD card, resize it leaving left over space behind it. Use that free unallocated space to create a the new PRIMARY ext2 drive. Good luck.

Clockwork Recovery
To partition, you don't necessarily have to use a 3rd party PC based partitioning tool.
If your phone is rooted, with Clockwork Recovery flashed, you can simply:
a)Backup your Sd Card on another device.(As warned, the process wipes the sd card clean)
b)Reboot your device into Recovery mode.
c)Select Advanced, then Partition SD Card
d)First menu lets you choose the size of the ext
e)Second menu lets you choose the size of the swap file.
When your done partitioning, you will have both an ext and a swap file, no 3rd party partitioning app needed.
You'll need an app like Swapper2 for the swap partition and the aforementioned Link2Sd for the ext

Thanks. When step d) is completed... what happens with the partition that was created... is mounted on the micro sd card, as a partition on itself?
I have another question. Is there an app/way to install directly to micro sd card, as if there is no need to move the apps later, because they go where is needed to in the first place?
Is there a way to move dalvik cache as well?
I'm not a developer by any stretch of the imagination, but this Linux cell phone has ignited my inner geek, and I must bend it to my will.
My basic question is, with the current state of development, how much is it possible to move from the internal storage of an LG Optimus Fuel phone (L34C/KitKat) and onto the external SD card?
I blow stuff up a lot because I'm an inveterate tinkerer, too adventurous for my own good/skill level. I'm an Android noob, but an old hand at Linux, which means I think I know a lot more about what I'm doing with KitKat than I actually do. But at least I do have a fetish for backups, which is all that makes my misadventures endurable.
So I did a Nandroid backup on my L34C after modding it only enough to support the TWRP backup. But the phone's internal storage is puny, and TWRP manager will only write to the internal SD, so I could only install about 300MB more in apps before there no longer was enough space for another Nandroid backup. Which means I've either got to tone down my tweaking (figure the odds!) or find another way to do Nandroids.
Yes, I could do an initial Nandroid, followed by Titanium backups, but where's the fun in that? Same with doing online Nandroid backups. No self-respecting geek every would let someone else be in charge of maintaining his backups (IMHO). And bonus points if I can relieve internal SD overcrowding by installing/moving apps and whatnot to the external storage.
So I'm thinking this is going to require linking, but the OE FAT32 partition on the external SD card won't support it. The OE 4GB SD card was too small to be slicing up, so I bought a 16GB cat4 SD card, formatted half in FAT32 and half in Ext3, but I could never get the Ext3 partition to mount. I wasn't able to find anything definitive, but I did come across information (of unknown validity) that the L34C's lack of init.d support was the reason it wouldn't mount.
So is this true? If I install a kernel with init.d support in my L34C, will I then be able to mount additional partition(s) on the external SD card?
As for the specifics of the partitioning, I found one mention in another forum in a post dated almost three years ago stating partitions on an Android external SD card had to be no more than 2GB in size, and preferably only 1GB. Is this true? Does it still pertain to KitKat? And what is/was the cause of this partition size limitation?
If the 2GB limit is true, what about creating and mounting multiple 2GB partitions? Say, one exclusively for writing the Nandroid backup to, and a second for moving files out of internal storage?
And what of my overall objective? In the current state of development, is writing Nandroid backups to the external SD card of an L34C (or even better, to the USB) known to be possible? Or im-possible?
If not, and presuming I can manage to get an Ext-formatted partition on the external SD card to mount, which of the many <something>2SD apps should I look to to move as much material as possible off of the internals storage?
I did try installing Link2SD, even though there wasn't an external partition available that supported linking. When I tried to move an app with it, one that Link2SD itself had labeled 'movable,' it failed with:
!Failure
App2SD is not supported by your device. Because your device has a primary external storage which is emulated from the internal storage. You can link the app in order to move its files to the SD card.

Dunno why it's blaming Apps2SD unless Link2 is built around Apps2.
But the advice was no help because I can't link to a partition that won't mount. And for all I know, the fact that the L34C uses emulated storage might be a show-stopper.
I've asked these same questions at other Android forums, but got no answers. I initially didn't want to even join XDA because you guys are too far above my pay grade. But I don't think I have any other choice, not if I ever want to get to the bottom of this.

Hi there,
What you may wish to do is transfer them to your pc for safe keeping and not have to worry about it. You could also try inserting your sd card into your PC and manually transferring the nandroids from your pc to your sd card afterwards.
Also regards to the sd card write protection issue, I could not find anything relevant for your device in particular but you can ask your question here and someone may be able to help you.
