[Q] How bricked am I? - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I have a T-Mobile Galaxy S (aka T959V). I upgraded to 2.3.5 via samfirmware.com and things were working pretty well, well, except that I was having a heckuva time rooting the phone w/2.3.5 so I could install CM 7.x.
I decided to revert to Froyo stock w/EZodin and while EZodin claimed that everything was fine during the installation, my phone has never exhibited signs of life after the RESET portion of EZodin: no blinking lights, no vibrations, just a black screen. No combination of:
- battery out, vol down, power, battery in
- battery out, vol up, power, battery in
- battery out, vol both, power, battery in
- battery out, vol both, battery in
- battery out, vol down, usb in, power, battery in
- etc ...
... causes any activity on the screen at all.
So I'm assuming that my bootloader is cooked in some way such that I can't even get to download mode. Before I resort to the jig method (or just return my phone to T-Mobile which is totally doable but not preferred if I can just kick it in the butt myself), are there further diags I can do to maybe get some activity out of this phone?

Are you sure it's a Galaxy S 4G (T959V)? To my knowledge CM7 was not ported to this phone.

There is no cm for this phone and what is ezodin? What exactly did you flash?

Very different phones.

Thanks for your reply!
The phone, while branded as a Samsung Galaxy S 4g at start up, well at least when it used to start up, is identified as SGH-T959V under Phone Info.

I flashed ezbase-ezrom from theandroidsoul.com. I was unable to post a link given my newness, but it can be Googled and is the first hit.
In retrospect, terrible, horrible, hideous freaking idea on my part.

I assume you mean battery out, vol down, usb in, power? Or battery out, vol down, usb in, battery in?
I am encouraged that maybe Odin will be able to see the device even if it's black even tho it wasn't the other day (maybe I wasn't persistent enough). Will have to give this a try. Thanks!

Remove battery
Start Odin
Plug phone into usb
Plug USB into computer
Hold both volume buttons(not power)
Insert battery
If odin doesn't see it first go try different usb ports. Still no go try a different computer. Still no go congrats you one of a select few to actually brick this device.
Good Luck

UnBrickable Mod to the rescue! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1333424
UnBrickable mod allows total software based resurrection of the GlaxyS4G. The only downfall is the resistors are tiny and hard to work with if you don't have the tools.
I can perform this modification for $30 + shipping (usually $6). It works and from the point of modification on you will be able to resurrect your device using the Ultimate UnBrickable Resurector. Send me a PM if you would like me to do this for you.

I did almost the exact same thing. Turned out that the EZ was the wrong bootloader for this phone. I was way hard bricked. Sent mine to Mobile Tech to get it fixed. I found no other option.

[Q] Phone won't stay in download mode?

I'm having some weird problems getting the phone into download mode. If I hold down voldown + power + trackball, the phone goes into download mode and is recognized, but then leaves download mode about 5 seconds later. The screen goes black and the charging screen turns on for a few seconds and then also goes black. If I just plug in the phone to charge, the charging screen turns on for a few seconds and then cycles with a black screen.
Is there something up with the charging circuitry? Is it possible to get the phone to stay in download mode?
Try doing the forced download mode method
Are you talking about the volume down + trackpad? Same thing happens, download mode screen flashes for ~5 seconds, phone turns off, starts flashing charging screen.
I also have a download mode jig, but that isn't working either.
Also, new development: the phone won't even turn on now when I hold down the power button. Bad battery?
No he means pull battery, connect usb, hold power, volume up, volume down, camera, and tackpad and insert battery. It should FORCE the phone into download mode.
Sent from the phone everyone has forgotten about!
That works, but I still get kicked out of DL mode after about 5 seconds. The issue was never getting into download mode--all button combinations work for that--but the problem is I get kicked out of it after a few seconds.
Hmmmm. I think its probably a bad battery.
Sent from the phone everyone has forgotten about!
Alright. I'll definitely check that out and get a new battery.
Got the battery today. Unfortunately, still the same problem! The Sidekick boot screen now displays in place of the battery charging screen, but I still get kicked out after 5 seconds.
Damn, well the only thing I can think is a problem with the board not receiving enough power. But I don't know, maybe someone else can help you better.
Sent from the phone everyone has forgotten about!
Another thread reminded me...
Fixed the problem! Seemed to be a ribbon cable or some sort of loose connection. I opened up the phone (all the way), removed the RF shield, unplugged all the ribbon/connector cables (minus the one for the camera) and removed the whole board from the phone case. Checked the connections, put everything back together snugly. It now works like a charm.
same problem
would you make a tutorial on how to do this ?

Yeah i had the same problem iv been trying to go into recovery mode and safe mode. I cant do it im having the same exact problem. I get kicked out every 5 seconds but Redct has a point. There may not be enough power going to the phone. I may attempt at taking the phone apart extremely carefully. If this works ill post then its a manufacture problem for not assembling the phone right or not finding out that people do lots of things with their phone and the phones is just a bunch of computer componets wraped around a piece of plastic. Better quality phones must be sturdy.
So I attempted to take apart the phone and put everything back together and successfully booted. I it booted into the Android OS but then for some reason crashed and entered the boot loop again god this is irritating

I am having the same problem. I took the phone apart, but I couldn't figure out how to get the circuit boards out to unplug the ribbon wires, can you tell me what to do? I had the same problems a few weeks back, but it was staying in download mode then, but now it won't stay in download mode for more than 5 seconds. I got a new phone because of it(LG Optimus). I would really like to get my Sidekick going again though!

I'm attempting this fix. Got arround taking out the board and just need some help with what to do with the RF. I can't simply take it out and put it back, my guess. Any help is appreaciated. Like what kind of tool would I need for that? Thanks!
The RF shield or the RF 5000? I'm confused.
BTW... If anyone needs help with how to dismantle the phone, follow this thread. It can be found in General section.

[Q] Infuse Won't Power Up.

I recently downloaded SD Maid Pro, cleaned out all the double files and now the Infuse just blinks Samsung until it dies. Can't get it to go into download mode or anything else. It just blinks Samsung til it dies. I plug in the charger and it just shows the starburst loading emblem. Can't turn it on, once I unplug the charger, it'll show Samsung and then just blink. Pulled the battery, put it back in.. automatically Samsung comes up and just blinks. Tried everything. I think it's done. Any suggestions?

Can you tell me step by step how you are trying to get into download mode...maybe you might be doing something wrong...also even if the screen goes blank after doing steps for download mode try and see if Odin/heimdal recognize it

Odin won't recognize it. I pulled the battery. Put it back in. Before I can plug in the usb cable it's flashing the Samsung screen.
Ok, try this
1) Pull battery
2) hold volume up + down
3) plug USB into phone/pc with Odin or heimdal running
4) place battery in
See if it boots into download mode that way

Yes, i've tried almost everything to get in download mode

nothing works it's like my power button is stuck, but it looks fine
M8, im dealing with the same situation with a couple motherboards. If im able to find a solution for that i will let you know. Ive done more than you have because i have even applied unbrickable mod to one of those two mobos with no luck. Pretty much same thing. The resurrector recognizes it but before it can resurrect the phone it will dissappear for good. So im starting to think it could be a damaged or corrupted file on the very lower levels of the infuse. But, at the same time, it maybe some hardware failure since i think unbrickable mod basically goes to the lowest level on the phone. Its a shame, but i have seen this many times on infuse phones. Never had to deal with that myself though....
Possible fix
My son brought me his phone last night with this same problem. I was not in the best mood to deal with it so made him, a teenager, go without a phone for a whole night....yeah dad of the year here. LOL. Anyway, I started working on it this morning and tried just about everyting I could think of until it thought of the Handyman's#! rule....If it doesnt work just bang on it. I took phone and with battery in it and cover on slapped it against my knee on the back cover in area where camera is. Dont try to break it just give it a good smack. Right after that it booted up and is just fine. LOL. I know it isnt the most scientific way to fix it...but it works for me and my son has his phone back. I hope this will help the rest of you out until we have a more defined solution.

[Q] (SOLVED) Bricked/Bootloop weird

Hey guys,
I got an infuse from a friend. When she gave it to me it was all stock and functional minus the fact that it would bootloop. When you would turn it on it would show samsung, turn off, samsung, turn off... About 3 seconds per on time. It would do this whenever it had the battery in or was plugged in. At first I was able to get it into download and then flash stock OEM. This fixed the problem, then I got into recovery and flashed a custom rom. All of this worked fine. Here's the problem
I tried restoring to the stock that I got the phone to before the custom rom was installed. This took 25 seconds and I knew something must have been wrong but I rebooted anyway. When rebooting I was faced with my original issues up above. Unfortunately its rebooting too quickly to put it into download mod. By the time I press the volume buttons and insert the usb it already boots and then starts over. If I do it quickly enough it goes to charge and bootloops to charge. The problem is that the phone bootloops whenever the battery is in. I don't have to press power for it to start.
Pretty frustrated and really would like some help. Thanks
EDIT: I ****ING FIXED IT!!! I swear this isn't a joke... I was reading a forum that had this problem and they all were saying they got angry and threw it/hit their phone and it booted up. Sitting there I eventually started entertaining the idea. I did a quick survey of the library I am in and... smacked it on my fist. THEN THE ****ING THING BOOTED UP!! What the hell!! SO excited. If it happens again, most efficient way is to drop the device on the top off the phone on a carpeted floor from about 2 feet

psal may be on to something however it sounds like you are not trying download mode correctly - if you had the battery pulled and the usb disconnected it could not be rebooting.
Edit: If the power button is sticking, most likely no need to replace- here is a video of how to replace the screen, not what you are doing but the point is it shows how to take the phone apart so that you can clean the power button. Hope this helps : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WS5I0SpL6c

It reboots only when I put the battery in. So the moment I put the battery in to try and get it into recovery it starts booting immediately. It doesn't give me enough time to actually press volume up and down and then insert usb. If i do it fast enough it just boots to charging mode and boot loops to that instead of the samsung splash
Edit: I have already taken apart the phone. Not really sure what I should clean. It looks completely fine and acts similarly to the volume buttons. How would you recommend I clean it?

I am not so sure that this is a hardware issue. Why would the problem disappear when I flash the OEM but then return everytime I restore to the faulty stock. I already took apart and the power button seems pristine.
With this extra info, it is pointing more toward a sticking power button with a hardware issue still something to consider... have you tried pulling battery, install usb, hold both volume buttons (no power button) and while continuing to hold vol buttons insert the battery ?
Edit: If the issue is indeed in the faulty rom, delete it and use something different.

Not sure how I would delete the rom because I cannot boot the phone, boot to recovery, or boot to download. I did try having the usb in, holding volume and then putting in battery. It didn't work. Do you think a jig would work? Thanks
Yes, I think for such a small price it is worth a shot- best of luck !!
It would also be worth mentioning to be certain you have a good usb cable as well as a good usb port on the puter.

[Q] NEED HELP! Screwed up ODIN root procedure, and GS3 is lifeless

Just got the Verizon GS3 from my employer; and, decided to root it.
It received the JB 4.1.1. OTA yesterday, after being activated; and, I tried to use the XDA posted procedure for rooting that new build:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439
Did all the prep, got ODIN and VRALEC bootchain loading, until ODIN showed green.
While waiting for the GS3 to reboot, I knocked the USB cable out of my laptop.
Couldn't get ODIN to continue, and the GS3 won't boot at all...100% black screen.
The only kind of response I get is when I connect the GS3 to the USB cable, and hold down the power button. After about 20 seconds, the computer will make soft pinging noises.
I've rooted a lot of Android phones. Had lots of problems, but never actually bricked one...especially one belonging to the company.
Have a completely bricked this poor phone; or does someone have a plan to offer?
THANKS, IN ADVANCE!

Appreciate the suggestion, Kintwofan.
Unfortunately, I had already tried that...took the battery out; and, let the phone sit for 10 minutes.
There is absolutely nothing when I hold down the Power button...no sound, no lights, no haptic buzz.
The only time it gives any sign of life is if I plug in the USB cable, while the battery is out. Then the upper-left LED glows red...even when I put the battery back in. However, after about 1 minute, the light goes out, and the GS3 will give out three short 'chirps'
Any other thoughts? Have I killed it?

I hope all works out well for you.
Unplug the usb from the phone. Hold Home+ Vol Down+ Power at same time, When it boots, then Vol. Up.
This is called Download mode. It WILL go into download mode if it shows a battery icon when plugged in.,
Then, open odin, plug the usb into the phone & continue on.
Just trying to power on from a soft brick will do nothing. It sounds like that is what you are doing.
Appreciate all the feedback.
I charged the battery in an external charger; and, tried to get back into ODIN mode.
I held the lower volume and home buttons down, then held the power button.
Nothing happened at all.
If I did it wrong, please explain how I should do it.

Did the phone even vibrate? Instead of holding them down at the same time, do it in a sequence. Volume down, home button, power button. Hold each one down while you hold the next button down.

Battery fully charged, and did the exact sequences described in the two most recent posts. Nothing at all... no vibrations, no lights, no sounds.

Sorry I didn't make it clearer. There was NOTHING on the screen at all.
What happened was if I plugged in the USB while the battery was out, a red LED came on (top left of the front of the device).
Whether I put the battery back in, or not, the red LED would turn off after about 30 seconds; and, the phone would give 3 soft 'chirps'.
The red LED doesn't go on, if the battery is in; and, there has been no other light, and there has been absolutely nothing on the screen.
Thanks!

This exact same thing happened to me when flashing (except I didn't knock the cord out). I tried all of the solutions found on these forms, and I even ordered a USB jig and nothing would work. I had the same thing happen with the red light coming on, wouldn't power on, tried the battery, holding the button combinations, etc.-still a no go. I finally gave up and had to ask for a replacement device unfortunately. I have an unopened USB jig from MobileTechVideos (I had ordered one from them and one from eBay) if you'd like to give it a shot with your device anyway.

I appreciate the suggestion. However, it was company property; and, I made the choice to screw around with it. As such, it is my responsibility; and, I won't scam Verizon or my employers to do some undeserved CYA.
MindArchr...thanks for the offer. Its very decent of you to do so; but, I have already arranged to make restitution for the device that I bricked; and, my company has ordered me another one.
The very best of luck and a very Happy Holiday, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and all that stuff to all of you!

Bootloops...

My Infuse 4G.
It keeps bootlooping.
It will load the Samsung logo or the battery charger for two or three seconds and then it reboots itself until the battery dies.
I've tried putting it into download mode, since this has happened to me before, but to my surprise I can't even enter Download Mode at all.
I've connected my Infuse to my laptop but nothing is being recognized.
So ... I'm phoneless ...
I would like to find some way to make it boot. That way I could exchange it using the trade in offer At&t for a new HTC One.
Last thing I remember doing before the bootloops... umm ... I installed Fusion Messenger. I'm using the latest Beanstalk build.
have you tried taking the battery off....press both volume plug it on the computer(without battery) and when plugged put the battery (always with both volume rockets pressed)
if it works get back to stock with ultimate unbrick good look

When you put the battery back in, does the phone power on without you pressing the power button? If so, it means the power button is sticking. Check out this thread for more info. There are a few other threads in the Infuse forums that cover the same topic and they might have other repair options.

Thanks. Turns out my phone had water damage.
But I got the new HTC One! Thanks Infuse forum. Weird leaving a forum that's very underground to a popular one.
