Found a great guide on improving battery life in htc smartphones . Nearly doubled my battery life . Before this I used to run out after a good 18 hour but after following this even with heavy use I have 34% left after 22 whooping hours! So guys follow it and tell me your experience that how much it improves with your smartphone . I am assuming you have a sense rom and you have a perfectly calibrated battery already. If you dont please calibrate battery by charging it to 100% then turning off with fastboot unticked , then plug it in wall charger again to find it having green LED in about 20 seconds but keep it that way for 5 or more minutes then going into your choice of recovery (clockworkMod or 4ext) wipe battery stats and you will have a calibrated battery. Another precaution to look for is all the charging should be done by wall-charger(not via USB charge). So here goes the steps to double your phones battery life :-
1) With the Desire S switched on, charge the Desire S
for 8 hours or more . Your battery should be 100% by that time . If it is don't disconnect the charger . Keep it plugged in for 8 hours or more. It gives the battery time to cool down too so its a good thing.
2) Having unplugged the device from the power cable turn the
phone off(also look for that you have fastboot disabled, Settings > Power > untick Fastboot) , then charge it for a further one hour. Again your battery might be 100% but still have it plugged in anyway! 1 hour or a bit more.
3) With the device now unplugged turn it on for two minutes,
then again turn it off (remember to keep it unpugged during the turning on and off period) then
charge it for another hour. In this time your battery will show 100% or the Green LED will be on but still keep it plugged.
Oddly the end result is your battery life should be close to
doubled. So try it and report back here how it went.
Typical guide of improving battery life:-
1.Turn off Background Data syncing : Settings > Accounts &
sync > Untick Background data. You will come across apps that
you wlil turn this on for, make sure you turn it off when you're
through with the using the app.
2 Ditch Auto-sync : Settings > Accounts & sync > Untick Auto-
sync. This single handedly cost me a lot of money overseas with
data usage. It will eat your battery too.
3.Get rid of Vibrate: Settings > Sound > Untick Phone
Vibrate.
4.Turn Off Haptic feedback, it's largely unecessary unless you
must have it: Settings > Sound > Untick Haptic
feedback : Vibrate when pressing soft keys and on certain UI
interactions.
5.Lower Brightness: Settings > Display > Brightness >
Untick Automatic brightness > Reduce Brightness by sliding to
left.
6.Lower the Screen Timeout Interval: Settings > Display
> Screen timeout (default 1 min) > Reduce to less than 1 min (15
seconds minimum).
7.If you're out and about then you can disable WiFi : Settings >
Wireless & networks > Untick Wi-Fi.
8.Disable Bluetooth, who uses this these days anyway: Settings
> Wireless & networks > Untick Bluetooth.
9 Clean up the Running services: Settings > Applications >
Running Services > Select and Stop any apps that you are not
using, there are likely to be many!
10.Check the data options of the apps you have installed, many
can be customized to reduce battery usage: normally in Setting
options of each app. Change intervals / frequency of data pulls
or disable background syncing altogether. Pay attention to
Twitter clients, RSS apps and mail especially.
11. Disable always on mobile data. Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > untick Enable always on mobile data.(thanks ben_pyett)
12. If you are on GSM or 2G then . Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Network mode > GSM only.
13. Use a Mobile network toggle widget to turn it on or off when not needed . It improves battery a lot as I find the latest radio to be a better battery hog in this case.
Follow the first guide closely . Second one is mostly already followed by average user.
Happy improving battery life! :-D

Good guides, although it's also important to switch off
Always on mobile data which is on by default.
Settings.......wireless & networks......mobile networks.......enable always on mobile data = untick
Bit dubious that you do not perform calibration at any point? Surely this is needed?

The typical procedure is followed by everyone. I just added that to make this guide big lol . Now yah always on mobile data is a ***** too . And calibration was done after flashing new rom already and we all know that it doesnt necessarily improve battery life but shows the correct percentage left . Different thing. But by following the 1st guide after calibration I was able to improve battery life by a large margin!

Sorry guys but this things are converting your smartphone into a normal phone. Why would I want to switch auto-sync off? Why do I have an auto-brightness sensor built-in ? Why do we have electricity ?
This things only get you minutes more, not hours. So they are kinda useless. Of course, a tip like switch bluetooth off when not used is a good one, but it's kinda intuitive.
It's all to the apps you are using and the way you are using the phone. Some apps are not optimized and they are a battery killer. Did you ever wonder why Yahoo Messenger eats your battery, while Gtalk doesn't ?
It's just an opinion, don't blame me.

Heya not blaming you use your phone as you wish . What I posted does improve battery even if for minutes then too. Now my main concern is the first guide which I got hold of . The typical one is user followed best settings to improve battery life.

The best thing you could do is to charge and calibrate your battery properly. Then it's all to you and how efficient you use your phone.

Yes and yes but if I do that charge >turn off >charge >turn on >turn off >charge procedure then battery life significantly improves over the calibrated one. Have you read my guide from the start? I have a battery improving guide at first and then a battery saving one. Read it through and follow . If it helps or not come back here and post to us. Thank you

Yeah! It helps to some extent, though Sense, the real culprit is still there.
Eliminate that, and it would help further.

This is a one time procedure as long as you are on same rom or maybe otherwise too but I havent actually changed rom after doing this . But I am guessing it should be one time process as long as you calibrate your battery after flashing new rom. But if you face battery drain after flashing a new rom then try following the process again and see how it goes.thank you!!!

Thanks for the speedy answer guys, anyway i just bought this DS a week ago, i dont want to void the warranty just yet, ive read all the posts in this thread , i want to try this out too, but my phone is in stock rom and unrooted, if the culprit is the sense, then if i lessen the use of my sense widgets that would help too, lesses =remove from home screen , thanks again for the info, very informative thread

My Mom recently got the G2X per my advice, and is complaining about the battery. I can root her device, freeze bloatware, install juicedefender/setcpu, but since she lives out of town, I'm afraid if she wants to exchange the device, it would be difficult to talk her through the unrooting steps.
Should I wait for the GB update and hope the battery gets a major improvement w/o needing to root, or go ahead and root it?

One fix you could have your mom try is setting the network preference to WCDMA ONLY. If she is in an area that has good/great 4G coverage, she would not have to worry too much about it losing all bars and trying to reduce to 2G as it does by default when set to GSM/WCDMA AUTO.
It's goes against all logic because WCDMA ONLY (4G/3G only) should eat up more battery, but there seems to be some sort of bug that makes it conserve energy when not on auto and not trying to switch back and forth.
Again...maybe give it a try if she has good 4G coverage where she lives, works, plays etc. Since yesterday morning when I first tried this, my battery life went from an average of 5-6 hours, to an average of 12-14 hours. All with fairly heavy use of GPS, WIFI, Web, Calls etc.
Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Network Mode > WCDMA ONLY. Reboot device....fingers crossed
Good Luck!!
Wait till GB is your best bet in that situation
I know I dont post on here often but ive had several android devices and this phone is the worst in battery life. Was getting 8 hours, max
What I did that helped was root the phone and inastalled setcpu and changed the default sync times of facebook weather bug e lite ect to two hours and finally I get a full days use. (16) hours or more I still have bluetooth wifi qnd gps on. I hope this helps.
Oh and I do toggle 4g / hspa and edge when I know I wont be around a charger this makes the battery last about 20 hours for me.

Set cpu manages the speed based on demand.
If your talking about battery time then its what I call moderate use of about 40 text and hour of talk time and glancing at engadget.mobile for a couple of minutes.
Not like today im using this thng like crazy and sitting at half battery now . Took off the charger ar 8 and its almost four now

Do you use SetCPU in conjunction with JuiceDefender, or should it be one or the other?
I am rooted but am running stock, I have juice defender installed and get a full day out of my battery. Unplug at 7am in the morning, moderate use during the day including games, txting, and gaming and then by the time i go to bed at around 11pm or so I am usually down to 20% or so. Juice defender is amazing. According to my battery stats I have been unplugged for 7hrs 27 mins and I am at 80%

Hey there im brand new to this forum and android in general i just sitched from an iphone to the Lg G2x. I have to say the G2x is incredible but my battery life isn't i get on average 5 to 6 hrs of battery life (lose about 20% every hour) as others i have installed juice defender ultimate, setcpu, and watchdog. In addition to all these apps i uninstalled apps like T-mobile app pack and wifi calling because these apparently use up a lot of battery. So my question is if there any tips you guys can give me or setting for my phone or apps because maybe i have everything i need installed but with the wrong settings any help at all would be great thank you in advance
Info that might help:
As of now the juice defender app reports: 1.36x improvement

Download spare parts, go to battery history, and look at partial wake lock.
If you see a bar going across the screen or even most of the way, that's your culprit.
Also games like Words With Friends kills battery life with its polling service.
@Texan28
Well idk i tried to post pictures to display all that info but since im a new member i cant post links to pictures yet and well how much are they because ive heard there rather expensive
@ enoch861
No i would say average use most of the time just texting (usually is periodic not constant) , very little email checking and little or no facebook use but most of the time the phone is just sitting like for example right now Cell Stanby is at:49% and phone idle at 52% personally i think its to high but idk is that normal?
@Scyth3
Installed the app but no apps seem to be giving trouble all that have a status bar are very small
Once you've confirmed that you're not seeing any rogue app activity then uninstall watchdog. You don't need an app monitor or task killer running constantly on your phone.
Turn off auto brightness and set screen brightness somewhere around 20-25%. Under Settings > Wireless & Networks > Wifi Settings > *Press Menu* > Advanced Settings change wifi sleep policy to never. Turn wifi off when you're not going to be connected to a wifi network. Set your email/Facebook/twitter/weather/etc apps to sync either manually or at least less frequently.
Your biggest battery killers are going to be your screen brightness and your cellular radio. Juice defender can help control some of the cell radio by keeping data turned off when you don't need it. Also consider if you have poor signal your phone might also be always switching from 4G to 2G then it'll use more battery.
Don't bother with disabling GPS. Your phone only uses it when an app needs it anyway.
G2X CM7
Also, I'm assuming you've rooted your phone since you said you've removed wifi calling and other T-Mobile stuff. In that case, open setcpu and create a couple of profiles. Create a Screen Off profile with max/min values of 312/216MHz. Also create an In Call profile with max/min values of 1000/216 and set the priority slider higher than the screen off profile. I do this because when the screen goes off during a phone call I still want my phone to have plenty of processor power available. And I don't set it lower than 1000 because I'm often doing other things with my phone while I'm on a call.
G2X CM7
Then there's something wrong with your phone or a rogue app. I text a lot also and use my phone moderately to heavily. But I still get a whole day of use from the phone. Its surprising.

@phburks I Actually have those settings on my phone however the setcpu i dont because i cant set those numbers for some reason it only lets me set default for example it goes from 245MHz to 384MHz (on the sliding adjuster)
@enoch861 really is there any tests i can run to find out whats really wrong?
No sir. Not that I know of.
But I would try to do a reset of the phone first anand run it a couple of days without really installing anything. If you get better battery life then it could be due to an app that you had installed. At that point you can start reinstalling your Apps one at a time in order of importance.
Now of that doesn't fix it, it could be a hardware issue.

In setcpu have you tried hitting Menu > Device Selection and then selecting the Tegra 2 option at the top? You might have it set up for the wrong device.
As for the battery life in general, 5-6 hours on light to moderate usage as you described is not normal for this phone. When I was on my stock rom unrooted I could still get at least 10-12 good hours and I use my phone a lot, mostly for texting and web browsing.
Are you in an area with weak cell signal?
Are there any other preinstalled apps from T-Mobile that are still installed?

If by unlocking you mean the SIM being unlocked to work on other cell networks, then you have nothing to worry about. A factory reset wont mess with that
As for performing a factory reset, go into Settings > Privacy and choose Factory Data Reset. Make sure you back up any texts/MMS you want to keep. All personal files/photos on your sdcard will be preserved but you'll have to reinstall any apps you want.
Since you still have stock recovery you can also power off the phone and then hold Volume Down + Power for like 10 or more seconds till you see the Android unpacking icon, and it will reset that way.
It shouldn't mess with root.

If your phone's rooted, which it seems to be, download the battery calibration app from the market. It's free, and helped my battery life immensely. Basically charge it up to 100%, use the app. It deletes the battery stats file so android can make a new one. Run it all the way down to empty, then charge it back up to 100% and you should be good to go.

Ok, So I searched through some of the battery threads and no one mentioned turning off HTC sense... So does turning it off and using just a simple launcher help with battery life?
For some reason my battery is being murdered, and I haven't done anything different. I am assuming my battery may be shot, but I don't feel like buying a new one, when I will probably be getting a new phone soon. I am, however, going to use some of the pointers I found in other threads, such as system tuner to under-clock my phone.
I have considered a system reset as well, have no idea if that could help, but may be worth a try.
I wondered the same thing.

Might be because the widgets and apps you're using are causing the phone to be constantly on. (i.e. Facebook refreshing every 15 minutes would drain battery faster as opposed to once an hour.)
Sense could be part of your problem, but it's definitely not your biggest one. I would attribute it to something like mobile data always on or something similar.

So I was looking through the developers site located HERE: http://developer.nvidia.com/tegra-250-tango-development-kits & found this;
"In certain power saving configurations, touching the screen or "Android buttons" at the top of the device is not adequate to wake the device. To work around this, try inserting or ejecting the SD Card to wake the device. Failing that, you will need to reset or power cycle the Tango. Alternatively, please set the screen timeout to 30 minutes (Menu->Settings->Display->Screen Timeout)."
Seems like the BSOD issues are in the 'Tango' version of the Tegra 2 processor & this (which was located in the Known Issues section) is Nvidia's solution. So I plan on testing this workaround (re-inserting micro SD) to see if this can replace a battery pull. As most of us know the other way of preventing BSOD is by setting the sleep mode to never & this seems to work for some & is recommended by Nvidia. So if you can give this a try, Plz let us know the results.

No problem. Yes it could, depending on your settings for both SetCPU & how your charging your phone. The thing with setting your phone to not sleep while charging is that it's only a workaround so that if you charge your phone overnight your phone will have less probability of turning off during the night so that you won't suffering from the alarm never going off & or you having to battery pull. Charging overnight is never recommended for Lithium Ion Batteries but for some people its the only time they have to charge their phone and so this trick is useful to them. So unless you potentially need this then by all means use it but take notice of your SetCPU settings & how your charging your phone so that you don't have even more issues.

set charging profile in SetCPU to 400-500Mhz
I was getting the SOD while charging quite frequently only after I rooted, not once did I get it before root. I did the never sleep trick about a week ago, no problems since, still have my fingers crossed, as this is my alarm clock.
I just start the clock and put it in "Night mode" before I goto bed and never have any issues.
I set to never sleep and have not had a BSOD since, thank you. Now if I could just stop the random reboots. This phone is frustrating.

I can't really solve your random reboots but I can give you a suggestion. I recommend a complete reset of what ever rom your using (data, cache, clean system, ex: no themes, apps & or just a fresh install) then install one by one each app, unless you absolutely need an app, maybe an app install per day or every few hours, this is to pick out the app that might be the cause for random reboots. A fresh install might even solve your issues. Also, refrain from using titanium backup batch restore or even app data restore unless it's absolutely necessary (ex:game data, logins or settings you absolutely need). Lastly here are some apps that I have found that have created this reboot issue on my phone and that you may what to test first: seekdroid (or any app that request administrator permissions), large games (mostly games that rely on sdcard files to run), and system modification apps (apps that ask for superuser permissions & modify system data).

Thank you very much for the information. Ill start testing 30minutes timeout now, this way locking the screen using the power button to save battery.
Hey all
I have a Sprint Galaxy S 6 that I just updated with an update that claimed to be to improve "battery drain".
It is losing 13% in a half hour without using the phone.
I have no apps running.
I go to settings and it seems that Google Play services is always the one that uses most of the battery.
I never got great battery life but this update seemed to make it worse.
Am I missing something big???
Any advise would be appreciated.

Probably your phone won't go into deepsleep. This is caused by wakelocks and alarms. You can fix this by rooting your phone and install powernap or factory resetting your phone & start all over again.

I would rather not root my phone... I did it with my last three phones and was more trouble than it was worth for me. The phone has all of the features that I like and I don't have a need to flash ROMS.
Any other suggestions?

In that case factory reset your phone, this will delete all of your apps and data so also the wakelocks and alarms. From then your phone will go into deepsleep and you won't lose so much juice when you don't use the phone
Hi, I'm also having battery life issues. I've factory formatted from recovery menu, but I still get battery issues. I charge my phone about 3 times a day and I don't have any significant drain according to the battery usage settings.

The same here. I have everything okay according to battery stats. But I lose like 5-8% an hour when screen doesn't work. Don't know what to do.
I basically surf the net and use WhatsApp. By early afternoon, I'm down to 60% battery. I unplug my charger at 6am everyday.
