ROOT THE AT&T SGH-I727 AND SGH-I727R SKYROCKET
β
This procedure does not trigger the Flash Counter, no ! yellow triangle at boot!!!
This method will flash a custom recovery image and then you can flash the superuser.zip file or custom rom to root your phone.
This will root 2.3.5 or 2.3.6.
This requires knowledge with the use of ODIN (Read a guide).
BE CAREFUL because this can harm your phone and I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF IT DOES!!!!
DO NOT HAVE "RE-PARTITION" CHECKED IN ODIN!!!!
First Things you need to have:
*You Need ODIN 1.8++(CLICK ME)
*The USB Drivers for Our Skyrocket
*Clockworkmod Recovery which you are going to flash via ODIN(THIS FILE DOES NOT ROOT YOUR PHONE!)
Code:
recovery.tar MD5 Checksum 9ffa2458019af7974ef4820d0cf5992c
*Superuser+Su files to flash in clockworkmod Or download your favorite custom rom. There is a good list here
*SDCARD installed for CWM Recovery
FIRST STEPS.......
*Install the drivers and make sure the Phone is recognized by your PC.
*Place the "superuser.zip" on your EXTERNAL SD card.
Or place a custom rom on your EXTERNAL SD card.
If you want STOCK rooted then use the superuser.zip, if your going to put a custom rom on anyway then you can use that rom.
***If you have never rooted or installed a custom rom before, I suggest using the superuser.zip method.***
NOW LETS INSTALL CWM RECOVERY........
*Take the battery out and place it back
*Hold both Vol up + Vol down, and plug in the USB cable.
*SGH-I727R (Rogers) users hold Vol down and plug in the USB cable.
*Press Vol up to continue to Download Mode.
*Make sure Odin recognizes your phone as in this picture.

}
*On ODIN, Select the PDA button and browse to the SkyrocketCWMrecovery.tar that you downloaded earlier
*Make sure the Re-Partition box is NOT checked*
*Select Start and Odin will do its thing.
*It should flash the Recovery file and reboot the phone.
NOW LETS MAKE A BACKUP AND GET ROOTED!!!
*Unplug USB, Take the battery out, place it back, and boot into CWM recovery with the button combo below
*Hold Both Vol up + Vol down and Hit power.
*Once in CWM Recovery, navigate the menu by using the volume buttons and select with the power button.
*Select "backup and restore" and then select "backup".
Now CWM Recovery is backing up your current stock rom, it will take a few minutes, be patient.
*After back-up and while still in CWM recovery...
*Select "Install zip from sdcard", choose the superuser.zip, select "YES" and let it install, you may need to flash it about three times if you get errors. Even with the error, sometimes it still works.
(follow the custom rom developers instructions for install of that custom rom!!!!).
*Reboot your phone and check for the superuser app in your app drawer.
*Now you are rooted with CWM Recovery installed!
Have fun!!
A one-click, no-Odin method will be posted later.
Sweet! that will be easier yet, this might tide a few people over till then.

Do you have to use "ROM Manager" if you rooted via the zerg exploit or can I go back to using ODIN?

I've used both and rooted via zerg. I think the suggestion to use ROM Manager was just a simplified way to get into CWM.
use whatever you like but ROM Manager will allow for install of CWM with minimal fuss
I also believe that using the Odin method will/might trigger the flash counter?
It did trigger the flash counter.
Just to be clear, we can use the CWM for the T-Mobile SGS through ROM manager (just to flash CWM), correct? Are there any features not working?
Yes. I did it today and did a backup with no issues at all.

This method does not trigger the flash counter. Only using ODIN to flash a non-stock rom or kernel triggers the flash counter. This method only flashes a the Recovery partition and you use CWM to flash kernels or roms and root.
Entropy512 said:
The ! screen is triggered when you flash a non-stock kernel in download mode - and it's only triggered when flashing using that method. The warning screen "remembers" what you last flashed in download mode, but isn't aware of anything you've flashed using another method.

ODIN is necessary evil when it comes to Samsung phones, going back to stock, fixing major problems and flashing modems are best solved with ODIN.
I think this is the simplest way to obtain root and have CWM and not trigger the Flash Counter.
i messed something up
First time doing root myself, ran into a couple of issues.
First Odin on PC said Fail! after choosing recovery.tar file for PDA and clicking start. Phone was still stating "downloading & to not turn off target". Now phone says it's in Odin Mode with yellow triangle error stating "Firmware Upgrade Encountered an Issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." Downloaded Kies to do recovery, but can't connect...even after re-installing drivers, both from Kies and the driver link from this post.
Im sure i screwed it up, but dont know what to do now....any help would be appreciated!

When using ODIN, be sure ODIN recognizes your phone like this picture.
Make sure no other programs are working in the background, like anti-virus or firewall, and make sure Kies is closed. They can mess up communication with ODIN and your phone.
Have you tried to boot into CWM?
If you can't, try flashing the recovery.tar again.
Then place |Melvin|'s stock rom on your external SD card and flash in CWM.

Ok, i've flashed v30a using that procedure. I'm still stuck on boot. I've followed your tutorial about wkpark's bootloader and recovery, but when I try to boot in recovery it just says "please wait for seconds.. power off.." and it shuts down again..
Then I've tried installing stock recovery in the same way, but that didn't work at all.. what can I do now?

Ok, I've done everything right, but nothing has changed.. perhaps I should try to flash a gingerbread kdz, but I wasn't able to find any of them :/
Had this issue yesterday. You will need wkpart bootloader to make it boot and flash recovery.
Follow the guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43672348
After flashing this, recovery will work, so you can wipe data.

I still can't believe it, but normal cwm recovery actually worked. My phone is finally resurrected! Thank you guys for your support! Now I guess I'm going to install Optimus RS' rom, 'cause I think it's the best one around
Hi, this is my first time rooting and installing a custom rom onto my phone and I just wanted make sure I didn't forget anything of do anything stupid...
Alright so I have a SG3, the Videotron Variant on 4.3 stock rom
I downloaded the drivers for my phone, am using the USB cable, and have installed Odin on my computer.
I followed this post : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771687
and I downloaded the "Videotron image"
my following steps would be to
"Extract the root66 tar file from the .7z file you downloaded.
Put phone into download mode [ with phone off, hold vol. down + home + power ], connect to computer and open Odin.
once in odin click the PDA field and select the root66 tar you downloaded.
Leave Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checked.
click start and
when done let phone reboot."
and third of all, i'd install ClockworkMod recovery then grab Rom Manager from the Play store and in the menu select to install ClockworkMod Recovery and then install a custom rom from there
Am I missing any steps? For example I was reading about the OTA update section and I didn't understand anything...
Thank you!
Hey, i am no expert but i can tell u one thing a lot of things happened with me when i tried to flash through odin. All sorts of error popped up and i had to search the internet for 2days to get it solved. Hence i would advice you to not go through odin. For custom roms i dont think you have to be rooted. I flashed my gts6102 via cwm my first time and i dont think i had rooted it before hand. Try to look for a flashable zip file for rooting and flash it via cwm

Try Framaroot and then install rom manager and load cwm from there.
Hey, i went into boot loop after an odin flash and got "invalid argument" error since my data partition could not be mounted. On my tab its volume up (because it's 7-inch.) Glad you got recovery. Yes, superuser has to be flashed to root. Flashing will install the apk in the system partition and get the su binaries in place. Installing the apk won't because it cannot access the system partition. Once it is flashed, you will be rooted and can access the system and root partition.

SlimKat is. Flash it and Slim Mini Gapps, reboot, do setup, reboot back into recovery and flash AA-Anykernel Slim Test2 and Vendor-Blobs for great performance and battery life. Recovery is volume up on the tab 10, it just looks like down because the volume buttons are reversed on that tab. If you boot into the system and push what you think (and I thought) is volume down, it will go up. I had this tab earlier and it was confusing :/

me176c(same intel Bay Trail Z3745 and simular spec) has firmware in asus website, but me181c don't. so, i cannot do anything
I don't know if the OP fixed his boot issue, but I wanted to post my experience with this tablet. I tried to root using RootZenFone 1.4.2 and it failed. Found a newer version 1.4.5r so I uninstalled 1.4.2. Then disaster struck. Now, keep in mind, I copy my downloads to my SD card and delete them from the device in case I need the files again or I brick the device and have to return it.
I went ahead a rebooted and ended up with the No Command and the dead Android. Holding the Volume Up while pressing power put me into fastboot, so I tried to do a recovery from there. No dice, same No Command. I tried simply powering off and tried again. Still either No Command or just Fastboot. While in fastboot, I tried to use Kango to root (Hoping it'd fix whatever damage RootZenFone did) and kept getting NeedADB errors. Obviously I couldn't turn on USB debugging.
Then, I decided one last ditch effort before I took the tablet back to best buy (Technically I hadn't voided the warranty since it never did root and attempting to root would be virtually impossible to detect since no files were left on the device - they're on my SD card). I powered off the tablet. While the tablet was still plugged into my PC, I held BOTH the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons and then pressed power. I got the typical ASUS logo, which I was getting before the No Command and Fastboot, but this time the tablet just sat there at that logo. I let it be for a few minutes while I took the dogs out. Maybe about 10 minuted. Suddenly, I heard the new device sound from my PC. it was installing the MTP driver! Looking at the tablet, it now had the Intel Inside logo (That I did not get while I was having boot issues) and about 45 seconds later the tablet is booted normally.
So, for what it's worth, I'd say hold both volume buttons as you power it on and see what happens.

First, i would like to say sorry i am not sure how i would post under the correct area. Just saw the reply so figured i would write here.
I have been doing research on how to fix my Trio Stealth-10 ( thought it was a 10.1 but now not sure) MST10-21. 16 gb.
I have done all the factory resets and erasing data and what not under the boot load (not sure if thats what it was called) but the one where i hold down the power button and the vol - did all that i can get my tablet to connect and do all i need it to but now it isnt downloading any aps under google play or updating them so i just have a factory tablet that i cannot add anything on. sometimes will seem like it tried to down load and will just say no internal storage or memory something like that has not said anything lately since i have tried today.
please break things down barney style for me as well i can do comp stuff sometimes but i will say all of you on this site are much smarter then me thanks for the help guys

1. https://cloud.mail.ru/public/2b47381cb37c/ADB.rar - This contains adb and fastboot if you don't already have them installed. This also contains the system image that we're going to use temporarily to get this thing restored.
2. Hook it up to your computer and load up Fastboot on the tablet (Volume+ and Power while booting. Let go of power after the logo shows up).
3. Flash the System image ( fastboot flash system system.img) followed by the boot image (fastboot flash boot boot.img)
4. Reboot.
5. https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95857557620392052 - Next, we're going to use a temp version of CWM-Recovery to reinstall firmware. Enable USB debugging, run launcher.bat, type "ACCEPT" and choose T3.
6. You'll auto reboot into CWM-Recovery. Grab the official firmware from the Asus site and install the zip from SD. Once complete, you'll need to reroot the device most likely. If you have a SuperSU zip, install it after you've restored the system.
You're done. This also opens us up for just about anything. Go play with your system. As long as you don't mess up your boot loader, this should save you.
Thanks so much RemmyLee
i just wanted to join and say thanks to RemmyLee.
i rooted my me181c and deleted a whole bunch of stuff i shouldn't.
i could get in to recovery but after that "No Command" screen it wouldn't do a thing. i followed RemmyLee's instructions up to step 4 and then did a reboot as told. Whereupon it found the extracted UL-K011-WW-3.1.23.172-user.zip on the root of my SD card and asked me to do an update which succeeded.
Thanks RemmyLee !

Please help! I did exactly as you said, but when I get into CWM and choose the file from my sdcard, it comes back and says:
Code:
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.
And goes straight back to the menu. No error messages or anything.
There is another zip file inside UL-K011-WW-3_1_23_172.zip.
1) Extract UL-K011-WW-3_1_23_172.zip
2) Rename UL-K011-WW-3.1.23.172-user.zip to user.zip.
Then follow Tethered CWM recovery steps.

Hi guys is there anyway to load firmware without root. I just received device but after charging and pressing power I get the message "NO COMMAND" I tried recovery but I''m only giving the option to reboot go into recovery or Botreboot. So it sounds like recovery is not installed. I am trying to avoid sending it back. Is it possible to load original firmware without root?????
i have reached step 5. then when i press T3 and hit enter it says ERROR FAILED TO COMMUNICATE WITH DEVICE
please help me i am new to this and i have ruined my tablet. if i dont manage to reinstall stock firmware i wont be able to use it.
Yeaaah thanks for the method, works succesfully
Team Win Recovery Project 2.8.xx for short, is a custom recovery built with ease of use and customization in mind. We started from the ground up by taking AOSP recovery and loading it with the standard recovery options, then added a lot of our own features. Itβs a fully touch driven user interface β no more volume rocker or power buttons to mash. The GUI is also fully XML driven and completely theme-able. You can change just about every aspect of the look and feel.β

I tried but Odin says is done but when i restate my phone its in original condition. nothing happen plz help.
+dushyantpratap If you are getting back to stock recovery even after flashing cwm/twrp recovery , Try this:
Rename the /system/etc/install-recovery.sh file to something like /system/etc/install-recovery.sh.bak or just delete this file using a root explorer app like es file explorer and then install a custom recovery using odin. If this file is not executed on boot you will stick to a custom recovery permanently or if want to go back to stock recovery just rename the file to what it was before and then reboot your device. A thanks will be appreciated
but how
I rename it to .bak.and i tried to flash twrp.but it's in original condition.(sorry for my bad english)
I tried to rename or delete the install-recovery.sh file but I cannot rename or delete the file. plz help me. Rooted device and tried via es file explorer. I am also stuck in the same thing. flashed recovery.tar img but still going in stock recovery. it says no command and then takes to stock recovery. plz help me.
