[Q] Please help - about default - General Questions and Answers

Hi all,
I have a MyTouch 4G running stock OS (Froyo).
I recently installed two apps: pansi sms and go contact ex. The first time in Pansi SMS app, I opened an old conversation with a friend, and when I clicked on his name to go to his contact detail, the app selection popped up and I mistakenly chose the non-Go contacts Ex option (I think it's "People", but I can't remember exactly) and set it as a default. I want to use "Go Contacts Ex" instead of People for all cases, but I can't seem to find a way to clear this setting.
I've tried cleaning defaults with ClearDefault, default app manager, search clear defaults and 1Tap cleaner, but none of them helped bringing the default selection back.
Somebody please help.
Thanks in advance.

Go to the phone app then hit contacts then menu then display options. Make sure appropriate accounts are selected and checkbox at top is what you want (phone number vs. no phone number) Maybe phone is filtering your contact list wrong?
EDIT: this is a VERY old thread...didn't see that

[Q] Contact names/photos not appearing in SMS Messages

I've seen this question posted on other sites but no one has given a workable solution yet. I've got an HTC Sensation on T-Mobile and this only happens with some of my contacts. I haven't rooted or messed with the OS in any way and I'm using the default Messages app.
The issue is that for some contacts, it only shows their number and not their name in the message threads. On the widget screen it shows the correct info, but in the app itself it either shows the number (+xxx-xxx-xxxx), their name and then number (John Smith (M+xxx-xxx-xxxx)) or for a few of them it actually shows just the name, which is what I want. On the lock screen, it also shows only the number and not the name for those same contacts.
I noticed that the contacts it screws up are consistently the same. They are also the people who I started entering by hand before my google contacts synced up. I've tried not linking any contacts and made numerous edits to the contacts themselves, but nothing seems to work.
Please help, xda devs, you're my only hope! This is incredibly annoying because it makes it hard to tell who I'm getting a message from.
This also happened to me after fixing permissions using clockworkmod. I have tried everything I could think of to fix this with no luck. Is there a way to restore the permissions for the messaging app in Synergy?
HTC EVO 4G with Root, Clockworkmod, & Synergy RLS1 (not god mode).
I think the clue here is that it happened after fixing the permissions.
Found the fix here:

Make sure you sync all contacts, enter the command, and then reboot. THANKS to tomyboombotz!

Google Voice with Stock Messaging Application?

Has anyone had any luck getting Google Voice to work with the stock messing application on the G2X? On my other devices I would just go into Application settings and clear defaults. Then when I launched the messing application it would ask if I wanted to use Google Voice or the stock application. The problem I am having is that on the G2X it is not giving me the option to clear defaults. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
What exactly are you trying to do? Get GV messages to show up in Messaging?
Try sending a message to a contact and see if it gives you an option to set a default application.
just clear data and cache for the messenger app in app manager
Yes, after I clear data in the messaging app I go to send a text but it doesn't give me any option to choose which messaging application I want to use. I am trying to use google voice with the stock messing application.
Try reinstalling the gv app. It did that to me too.

Frequently called list

Hello everyone, pretty new here and coming from a my touch 4g. I'm pretty happy about this phone, with the exception of one thing about the ui.
The frequently called list. I don't use the phone function much, but it seems contacts get added to this list even after an accidental phone call that doesn't go through. The list is getting so long now that it's almost my whole contact list!
It's one of my biggest burdens about the phone having to scroll through my contacts twice to find someone that I just haven't called since I've flashed a room. And i can't find an option anywhere to remove it.
Any help?
Thanks in advanced

The only solution I found for this was to log in to gmail from your computer; export your contacts via Google csv; delete all your contacts including frequently used contacts; then import back in your Google csv file.
I recently did this myself and it worked. Only solution I found using Google to find a solution.
You can long press the contact it will bring up a add to/edit and then hit the menu button and in that is a remove from call log.
while one of these options will get rid of contacts in the frequently called list, it doesn't really disable the list themselves.
Removing a call from the recent calls list doesn't get rid of a contact in the frequently called list. =[
I guess my only choice is to go with another dialer? Does anyone have one that they'd like to recommend?

Duplicate numbers in dialer

Hello everyone,
I am running a stock rom on my GS6 and since yesterday, when I had to call someone I noticed that I have duplicate phone numbers for each contact, but only when I type a contact's name using the T9 function of dialer. If I go to contacts, everything is fine.
I noticed that the issue is solved after uninstalling whatsapp. When I reinstalled whatsapp from the play store, it installed version 2.12.176, but I instantly got the update for 2.12.242 which was the version I had before. The issue came back after 30 minutes of use...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had that problem also but because of another app, you need to not sync the app with your contacts. I was able to unsync the contacts from my app. Try going into settings, accounts and see if you can set it to not sync or maybe in the app unsync your contacts.
I don't have this whatsapp contact sync problem, but i had duplicate contacts. Did you try to "merge contacts" from the menu in the contacts app? For me this worked

the problem is that contacts don't show the duplicate numbers, it's just from whatsapp/other app that is giving this problem.
I have the same problem on my Galaxy s6... Any fix?
Yes i have this problem. Any Fix??
Hello I have the exact same problem. But a lot of people that have the S6 (95%) doesn't have this issue.
Maybe we have a contact problem in our Google account?
I'm thinking of deleting and retyping all of them bit it's annoying...
Should I give a try? I need WhatsApp so much but this double number issue is very frustrating at the same time....
Okey, so I had the exact same problem and I think I might have found a way to fix this. The problem is it's contact by contact and not bulk.
1. Go to your contacts in your S6. Search for a contact that you know have duplicate numbers in the dialer.
2. You will now see that there is just one number added to the contact.
3. Click the "show more" link in the bottom of the contact card (above your recent activity)
4. This expanded view now shows you more contact info. Look for the "Connected by" field with a link symbol on the right.
5. This field will show you what services link contact info to this contact. Click it and press the "-" by the connected app to split it from this contact.
6. Now if you search for this contact again you will find two contacts. The original one and the one you just broke free.
7. Click the unwanted one and press "more" in the top right and select "delete". It will warn you that you cant delete read only stuff but proceed anyway.
8. Voila! Now you don't have duplicate numbers in your dialer.
As I said this is a bit tedious, but it works. I have done it to my most frequent contacts and thats good enough for now. There is an option in the contact app where you can choose what sources to show in your contacts but that doesn't seem to work or doesn't apply to the dialer.
Hope this helps
.- Alex
Thanks for the help Bathyon I'll try this when I get back from work!!! I'll let you know.
This problem is not restricted to only the S6. I have the exact same problem on my Galaxy S4 mini Duos
I'm having the same problem with my Moto X (1st Gen). :/

Working ! ! ! ! Thank you very much ! You're a hero ! WhatsApp settings doesn't ask you if you want or not the app to mix up with your Google contacts. You found the solution to "separate" them without having twice the same contact anymore !
Thanks again !

Glad I could help. It was driving me mad so I'm as happy as you are
I don't think it's the proper solution. The apps need to fix the problem. I'm having the same problem on S5 too
Also having this problem. With the latest Whatsapp Beta. I will try seperating them.
For those who are still annoyed by this problem, I've found a more elegant solution - yet still somewhat of a hack. Unfortunately, root is required until marshmallow hits our devices:
1) Uninstall Whatsapp from your device
2) Install "App Ops" by nowsky from the Play Store
3) Reinstall Whatsapp (but do not yet open it)
4) Open up App Ops
5) Scroll down to Whatsapp in any of the categories (e.g. location)
6) Press on Whatsapp and untick its ability to "modify contacts"
7) Open and configure Whatsapp normally
Henceforth, Whatsapp won't be able to create duplicate numbers or entries. This solution does not seem to have any detrimental effect on Whatsapp itself. All Whatsapp capable contacts are properly displayed, there are no error messages and what have you.
