brando antiglare screen protector :(

I've just fitted one and I'm not impressed. its like looking at the screen through lots of tiny prisms. the whites have turned into a snowy mess of green/red and blues.

wow most people said Brando SP's are awesome.
Altho all of the good reviews was about the UltraClear version and not Antiglare.

I had an ultra clear one on my last phone, I thought I would see what the anti glare was like. now I know!

I've ordered two days ago the ultraclear... Don't know how much time I'll have to wait for the delivery but seems like a volcano (Eyjafjallajökull for those who wants to break their tongues on the pronounciation) messed the whole thing!

Thats the problem caused by anti glare coating.
its feels kind of rough under finger and also keeps greasy mess to minimum.
it works pretty good in direct sunlight as it says in the tin, but it does degrade picture quality.
I had the same one for my Touch HD and kind of learn to leave with it as I was spending quiet a lot of time outside on work.
But if its too much for you switch too a ultraclear one or Martin Field one.

That's disappointing, I've got one coming. Hopefully I'll find it less of a problem, the grease/finger marks on my Martin Fields on is grating on me at the moment.

i have to agree partially with SousukeUK, maybe i need to adjust the screen brightness in sunlight . you will get used to the prism effect. there are no fingerprints whatsoever using this sp. you will notice where you swipe, now and again. i do like the brando anti glare sp. tho i haven't tried any other

I'm a longterm user of those anti-glare protectors (for years now).
It kinda depends on what you want to do with the device. And it does make the screen more 'grainy' indeed.
But! For outdoor use or for car-navigation I think the trade-off is well worth it.
Same goes for the 'touch', it feels more paper like. Makes it much more easy to use the touch screen and leaves almost no finger prints. So that's a bonus as well.
@k3v, did you use any water to clean the screen and/or the protector? Because in my experience the anti-glare should not give the prims effect. Because I once cleaned the protector and the tiniest bit of water was left under the protector, I had a lot of 'prism effects'.

Thanks for the replies. I fitted the screen in a steamy bathr0om to try and minimise dust. There was condensation on the screen that i did wipe off, although with the bathroom being so steamy it may not have been fully dry.
I might take it off and clean it then reapply and see if it is any better.
I have to agree about the finger prints problem vanishing.

Well, I usually apply the protectors as well in a steamy bathroom. If there was a lot of steam on the screen it could amplify the prism effect. Although most of the moisture can be pushed out to the sides when applying the protector in my experience (or just clean the screen very good, gives you a few seconds to apply the protector).

Yep, a bit grainy. With indeed some prism effect. Like very tiny rgb noise. Mostly visible on light (white) backgrounds.
The effect could be worse due to some moisture that's left because of the steam. On the other hand, it seems this is the 'normal' anti-glare effect. Remember it has to break the light to avoid reflection, and that effect probably works both ways.
I'm still waiting for my protector for the Desire. On the Hero I think the effect is very acceptable. Perhaps the effect is worse on a Desire?
Anyway, so far I have found the effect to be very reasonable. Reasonable as in: a good tradeoff between the grainy background and the positive effects such as no reflection, less fingerprints and easier/nice touchscreen feeling.

Just thought I'd weigh in with my anti-glare screen protector experience (not Brando).

I found them very easy to apply, without getting dust on them at all. Also, because they are quite rigid, they go on with no air bubbles underneath.
The feeling (as noted by someone above) is just like paper, with a lot less friction than the standard glass - really nice to use the touchscreen with it applied.
However.... the "prism" effect completely ruined this product for me, and I took it off after 10min of looking at the screen. No fidelity anymore when viewing things, and the colours (especially white) were all split up into rainbow-like pixels it seemed.

The touch-feeling on these is no better or worse than the bare glass screen, and they are completely clear, so do not interfere with your viewing pleasure.
However they are difficult to apply correctly without getting air bubbles underneath. My attempt with the first one didn't end well, and so I'm now using the second piece on my phone. I still have a few tiny air bubbles that I cannot get rid of. Using a credit card scratches the screen protector (slightly) and I eventually dug out a rubberised plastic installation squeegee that I had from an old Invisible Shield purchase for a previous phone. This got most of the bubbles out.
I'm still not happy with it, and on the look-out for a protector that has the smooth-touch feeling and easy application of the anti-glare, but WITHOUT the anti-glare properties. Surely someone must sell this product? I don't care what it costs, so long as it's right.

Yep, kind off it helps in many ways. Like even if I get multiple scratches It wouldn't matter as I can get the screen guard changed. But If I didn't had it at ones that would cost me more.
Though now a days its trend for Gorilla Glass and vise versa!

I do not use it anymore. I had a cover for my Galaxy S2, and also a plastic 'sheet' to protect the front.
In my line of work I had quite some rough jobs wich resulted in hairy situations for the phone. Eventually I switched jobs last year, and these days I sit behind a desk. There is no use for the cover anymore. The front itself can withstand most of the daily stuff.
The cover for the back etc. might be handy if you drop your phone, but did you ever see those phone-drop-tests?
Bottomline: Obviously it's safer, but I don`t think people really need them.

Well, I bought my xperia x10 USED. Seller told me that it has BIG SCRATCH on the bottom of the screen (btw, xperias screen is scratch-resist), and I told him that he has to lower the price, so he lowered price for 20€ ..When I bought it, I found out that there is a screen protector on it..So, I removed it, and I have a brand new phone..without scratch on the bottom of the screen ofcourse ..
So, if you are a seller, remove it if there is any scratches or something else..If you are a buyer, try to screw up a seller

Changed several of them already and my screen still doesn't have scratche

I've been using them on my epic 4g that I have had for the last couple months. But before that I didn't use them on my lg optimus v or HTC Eris.

I use no screen protector but I had one. There are no scratches on my phone now and I can wipe better. You have to be carefully without a protector.

I use a protector for 2 reasons. Firstly, for peace of mind. Yes, it's Gorilla glass which means it's less likely to get scratched, but there's no glass in the world that is completely scratch-proof, so it makes sense to cover it for that extra protection. Secondly, I use a matte (anti-glare) protector. It's good for reducing reflections and helping read the screen in brighter light, but it also stops fingerprints and greasy smudge marks.
Each to their own, but if I've got a £500 phone then I see no point in *not* chucking a few more quid at a protector.

In my opinion, screen protectors can be very useful. There are different types of screen protectors, that offer different benefits to suit your needs.
The first kind of screen protector is a "clear" type, which is obviously clear, that offers scratch protection. The drawback of this type of protection is, because of the clear, craystal like finish, it creates a glare like effect, making it difficult to see the screen in direct sunlight, or brightly lit rooms.
The next type of screen protector (my favorite) is an "anti-glare", which has a matte finish. This type of screen protector not only prevents scratching, but it also cuts out the glare, does a great job of hiding fingerprints and smudges. It also provides a better feel when touching the screen, removing that "sticky" feeling when sliding your finger across the screen. The downside to this type of screen protector is that it slightly takes away from the sharpness or detail of the display. (only slightly though). A fair trade off, in my opinion.
The third type of screen protector is know as a "mirror" type. This protector has a mirror finish, which actually looks like a mirror. This type offers scratch protection, and because of it's mirror finish, also provides a level of privacy, making it difficult for other people to see what's on your screen. The downside to this type of protector is, because of the mirror finish, it makes it extremely difficult to see the screen under any lighting conditions. It also doesn't hide scratches very well.

i had a screen protector but i took it off, i didnt like it, it just didnt feel good, so i bought a phone bag. i only take my phone out of the bag when im really using it. no scratches so far. id reccomend a phone back and no protetor, but its everyones personal opinion how to use phone

It depends... If you have your phone in the same pocket as your keys it's usefull to have one. When you have your phone in an case it's not that usefull.

I like screen protectors but my hands and fingers are so dam rough it scratches the screen protector up, so I go threw screen protector a couple weeks, the protector would just get so scratch up

If you are rough on your phone, then yes; else no.
I've never used one and don't have notible scratches, but then again, I'm always very aware of how I'm handling my phone, and when I carry it around, I'll keep it in its pouch.

One X Glass Quality

As an early adopter, I know better than to complain about software issues at launch. That being said, I have my doubts about the quality of the glass in front of this beautiful screen.
I previously owned a Motorola Atrix 4G, which took moderate abuse in the year I owned it for. In that time span, without a screen protector, the screen sustained minimal scratches and were only visible in the right, particularly outdoors in sunlight.
This device, I have owned for about two weeks now, and it has two significant gouges; one at the top where the glass meets the body of the phone, and one at the bottom, not on the screen itself but its significant enough to feel a 'bump' if you run your fingernail over it. Big disappointment coming from the Atrix that never had a scratch you could feel. In daylight, depending on the viewing angle, is covered with dozens of small thin scratches. They don't impact viewing quality of the screen, but simply seeing how much damage the screen has sustained in the first two weeks makes me question how it will be in a year.
I plan on trying the Skinomi screen protectors that claim to 'heal' scratches, the big gouges I can live with but I was wondering if others have noticed this screen seems to be less scratch-resistant than other smartphones?

Mine already has a scratch that can be felt with a fingernail. My Captivate that never had a screen protector is in better shape. Maybe there's an issue here...

My atrix has been abused and screen still looks new with no screen protector. It is now my 20 month old daughters device to watch Disney videos on and the screen is still perfect. The body on the other hand is scratched to hell.

Are you setting your phones screen down or is this just happening under normal usage?

My Atrix held up fairly well to scratches. I dropped it on concrete a few days before I sold it. The drop resulted in some pretty good scratching.
Had my One X for 3 weeks and I don't think there's a single scratch. Plus it seems to resist fingerprints much better than the trix.

I wonder if there aren't issues with Gorilla Glass 2 since it is so new. This is the first production device that uses Gorilla Glass 2.

There's an article somewhere (gizmodo or engadget) of a Chinese video of the HTC employee stress testing the screen of the one x. He uses the screen as a hammer and pounds nails into a wood block. Not a scratch or crack. Go check it out.
Also its just a phone. Of the glass breaks its replaceable. The ttime you spend inside isn't.

minor scatch already - but new glass coming
After 2 years with the Captivate (no screen protector - I love the feel of the naked gorilla glass) I was hoping to keep up the good luck. no scratches on my Cappy!!!
Well, I am the proud owner of a gray HOX. I recently had an unfortunate accident (some kid tried to swipe/snatch the phone from my hand and it went flying and skidding on the glass for about 5 feet!!!) and I have a tiny scratch near the bottom toolbar - but I haven't been bothered at all in everyday use, just that first scratch disappoinment!
Ordered a new one for $37 and its on its way. Now I actually plan to wait to replace and use the ever so slightly marred one until I get a few scratches.
We replace an old Iphone glass last year and the replacement made the phone feel brand new again.
Needless to say, my son took off his screen protector on his phone after he found out the cost was insignificant to replace. He prefers the glass and I don't blame him!
The One X has a beautiful screen and glass, it's a shame to cover it with a protector that will get nicked up anyway.

Gorilla Glass is overrated.

Yesterday, I dropped mine completely naked from waist height, watching it flutter to ground in slow-motion like a John Woo flick, landing on the corner of the glass on the sidewalk, and it only has the slightest of scratches on the bezel, completely invisible unless really focused upon. At the time I stared at it, face down on the ground, thinking, "Well, there goes that." Completely expected it to be shattered. Turned it over and couldn't believe it.
So either I got a lucky bounce or it's decently durable.
Case arrived today. Because that's how the universe rolls.

I don't put anything over the display. But I do get a case to protect the device. Without doubt my devices would all get damaged and marked if they fell without a case protecting them.

[Q] To Screen Protect...Or Not To Screen Protect

With Gorilla Glass 2 on the Infinity, what is your opinion on placing a screen protector on this device? And if 'Yes,' which one?
I have one on my phone and it has been great, but does a tablet like this warrant a screen protector.
For myself, I plan on having the device in a rooCase when it becomes available.

I had a protector on my NexusOne that has Gorilla V1.
Dumbest idea ever!
I removed it about a year ago. It fell down so many times, no scratches.
Screen is like when I bought it.
I don't think you need a protector with Gorilla anymore.

if you take it on the go a lot - screen protect it
if you have kids - screen protect it
if you like to set it up and down on stands - screen protect it
if you dont have a leather case - screen protect it.
if you just like the awsome smooth feeling of the glass, then leave it naked and touch it all you want

Screen Protectors usually make for a tight fit with docks. You may have to do a little trimming around the docking points depending on the protector you choose.

When I carry it arround the house, I don't need a protector, Gorilla Glass doesn't seem to get scratches easily (nor does the back of my Infinity, despite what some said).
For going out I either take the dock which encloses the screen within the whole thing or I take TranSleeve (originally meant for the Prime), which is helpful for typing or watching media (two standing positions). I don't see a point of having this kind of sleeve for both (although this seems nice: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28593251&postcount=19), although I have bought the cheapest (~$3) neoprene etui/sleeve for 10" netbooks available (somehow they tend to be cheaper than the same products for 10" tablets): http://vegacom.eu/data/gfx/pictures/large/6/6/9566_7.jpg?337768
This is more for suddently-dropping-the-bag-on-the-floor kind of situation than to avoid scratches, but I feel better with these precautions (I also carry a few books in the backpack quite often, so it seems safer to have some kind of cover).

Are we talking screen protectors or cases here? I'm thinking I'm going to grab a slip case for the tablet/dock to just slip it in something light.

I was answering the question if one should protect the screen with gorilla glass, but ok, good point. I would never use something that would blur the image on the Infinity, but I can understand somebody would want to do it to be able to use the tablet in direct sunlight. But to avoid scratches? Hell no!

You can some brutal things to gorilla glass without scratching it. Most people don't need a screen protector. The huge elephant in the room is dust, which might surprise some folks who don't have to live with much of it. If you live in an especially dusty region, you should seriously consider protecting even a GG2 screen. The glass has not been invented that won't scratch if the right piece of dust gets dragged across it just so. Hammering a nail with an HTC one x is impressive (reference to a youtube vid I saw once), but not the most practical test. Some dust particles are harder than nails, I assure you.

Definitely +1 concerning the dust, but concerning the damage reduction potential of Gorilla Glass: when I got my LG Optimus 2x about one and a half years ago, I rubbed the tip of a knife on the screen (Gorilla Glass v1) to and fro in a ballsy whim during a dinner with friends. Turns out it was a bad idea: although I have since upgraded to the SGS2 and the LG is now carried around by my wife, it still bears a nice mark (scratch).
Although, with a probability close to certainty, a normal screen would've been utterly destroyed (I wasn't exactly gentle), the potential for damage is still there and it doesn't even take visceral violence. It is chemically hardened glass, it can take a beating but it is only an extra line of defense.
For the sake of on-topic conversation: I have never used a screen protector on any device I own. I take good care of them and mostly use them eitehr indoors or in a shaded area (inside the train, for example). If you'd need outdoor visibility, consider it. If you have the dock, think about a good sleeve or case (I have bought an relatively cheap leather one on eBay and, although it does add significant bulk, it does a commendable job as far as protection goes).

Dust? Really? Have you seen the Gorilla Glass 2 vendor video? They threw everything at it but the kitchen sink. If dust was ever to be their demise, Gorilla would lose ALL credibility with their product. I'm hardly worried.

I love the "Guerilla" typo, it should be an extra-hardened version! ;D

When I got mine I found it was almost impossible to use out on the pattio without the anti-glare film.
The glass is simply a perfect reflector giving very crisp and detailed images of everything around and abowe you overshadowing the data on the screen.
The same issue faces almost all tabs and phones though.
The anti-glare screen does do odd things to the pixels due to the high density, but overall it works.

GG is tough and great, but you underestimate the power of dust.

+1 for an Anti-glare protector. Not for it's "protection" qualities, but for it's anti-glare qualities... I just got my TF700 and the screen is beautiful, but very reflective... Plus the anti-glares help reduce finger prints significantly. Just get a good one - you usually get what you pay for when it comes to anti-glare protectors.
However, I do worry that it may interfere with the screen quality too much on the TF700 though (they usually create some level of "pixelation" effect which may ruin the TF700 "experience" - not sure as I don't have one yet!

I refer to the effect of anti-glares as the rainbow effect. It acts a little like a prism per pixel, especially noticeable on white screens as you'd expect. Some people just see it as noise. Some don't see it.
I'm undecided about whether or not its worth it. It always has been before (bonus: fewer prints), but I've never had a screen this beautiful before either, and I'm not sure I want to obscure it.

My argument is pretty simple: the Infinity is so pretty I would never want to blemish it with any permanent type of screen protector. And it gets so hot in direct sunlight during summer here anyway that I prefer to stay indoors with it ;>

The screen have too much resistance it grabs the finger.
It's not as smooth to touch on ipad screen, didn't anyone noticed it?

Liquid screen protector

lol i was reluctant to post this but our options are not looking good so far. Has anyone tried this? I wouldn't mind applying it often if needed but i always wondered if this works. I have seen what some think about it but im asking those that have actually tried it and have experience with it.

I been using skinomi protectors screen the note egde. they work great and stick very well to the edge. havent had any edges pull up.
There also very clear and easy wet install.

Honestly, they feel like straight tacky rubber. They also affect the clarity in my opinion.

Hum i havent had that problem. I used my s7 edge without a protector for a wk til the skinomi came in. Once instal, after a day or 2 didnt even know i had it on.
But to each there own, you know.

has anyone done a crash test for these??

I've never used a screen protector on my previous phones (Note 2 / Note 4) and have never had any issues with scratches. I always have my phone in my pocket, though I always place it with the screen facing my thigh to avoid any accidental damage to the screen from outside and I never place keys in the same pocket.
When inspecting my note 4 after 2 years of use I can only see a few very fine hairline surface scratches that are basically only visible under very close scrutiny, under specific light and with the screen tilted at a specific angle - so generally speaking, my note 4 screen is still flawless after 2 years of use.
Now the scratch resistance of GG5 glass in the now infamous video of note 7 does trouble me as does the lack of good screen protectors which cover the whole screen without having to deal with drawbacks such as rainbow effects, hollow clicking, loss of sensitivity, peeling of corners etc.
Therefore, I'm also considering the liquid solution from Kristall for my preordered Note 7 in hopes that it could help prevent scratching of the glass on the device. I couldn't care less about the improved shatter-resistance of the GG5, as I do have an insurance plan that would cover an accident, but so far I have yet to shatter a screen on any of my phones.
So I'm planning to use the Note 7 as is, without ugly covers or screenprotectors, but would using something like Kristall liquid screen protector be able to improve my chances of not scratching up the glass? Does anyone have any insight / personal experience / references to tests that show its effectiveness in regards to scratches? (Not in regards to shatter resistance)

I have always been curious about these. I would love to see a video demonstrating the effectiveness.

I do I had it on my Nexus 6and I never got one scratch on my phone I even dropped it on the concrete one time nothing

The Nexus 6 uses Gorilla Glass 3 though, which is even more scratch resistant than gorilla glass 4 (but more prone to shattering). I wish they would go back to using GG3 to be honest.

They should use Sapphire since we're paying so much for this damn phone

Something like applying the liquid solution to half of the screen of note 7 and then using the picks to scratch both sides would be awesome and would really show if this stuff has an effect?

Yes that would be the way to go TBH.
These treatments may prevent stuff from abrading the oleophobic coating but they aren't going to prevent scratches in the glass itself. Also if it truly is a persistent coating, it's going to change how your fingers slide across the screen. It could be for the better or for the worse. If it's the latter, I wonder how hard it would be to remove?

From what I've read online, the feeling was slightly different to naked glass, but not "bad different". Also the screen is supposedly gettimg a little more gloss /shine with this.
As I understand, the coating mostly covers/fills the microscopic pores on the surface of the glass, so I'm guessing that it'd still feel smooth?
As for removing the coating - no idea
I think I'm gonna try it out on my note 7 when I receive it (gotta wait till the 9th of September)...
I'll post back regarding my experience, but since I'm not gonna attempt to scratch up my new device on purpose, I probably won't be able to say anything regarding the effectiveness of the added scratch resistance as opposed to not using the solution...
I'd still love to see a proper test from JerryRigsEverything though!

GG5 is garbage.
I noticed today in direct sunlight that I have quite a few faint scratches. You can't see them when the screen is on and the scratches are only visible at certain angles.
But considering its only been a week and this phone costs as much as a laptop that's unacceptable.

Well from what i found, a note 7 screen replacement will cost $250(for the new screen itself) lol i would have ordered one and tried this liquid screen protector stuff but damn that lol

I did some Google-Fu and found this thread. Like others have said, what good is screen protection you can't remove if it gets messed up?

This is just what i found on this particular one

No, liquid screen protector does not work. Have seen reviews in my local forums that scratches occur after.
Also, I've just made experiment by putting on car coating material (aquartz t-cera) on my tablet's screen,
3 layers with a day of curing for each layer, 2x application per layer .. and after days of curing,
tried rubbing small piece of sand/dry cement to the screen glass (non gorilla),, and tadaaa, scratches !
so, No ... liquid stuff doesn't work for me.
