Ok, I am sure folks have asked this before. I have done a search and still can not find a answer. I am wanting the option in my settings that will allow me to download non market apps.
I have rooted the phone and am running the 2.2 custom rom that I got before AT&T released theirs. When I go into setting to the area that should have the option to allow non market apps, it is not there.
I thought that once you rooted and installed the custom rom, it would give you this option as I know that AT&T blocks this on their firmware / rom.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Obviously you did not do a search and posts like need to be in q&a section. We had this place cleaned up a couple days ago to rid the general of threads like this.

You can use this to root, but then also to allow NM Apps. Real simple, just have to have the drivers installed on your computer.

First, This is my first time on this paticular website so knowing the exact area to post is not always the easiest as all forums are different.
Second, I am a member of different tech type forums out there and I would never slam someone like you are doing. The purpose of forums like this is to help people and not to see how big of a "****" you can be to someone.
You should keep in mind that you may need help someday on a product you have and you go online to get a answer and that person acts the way you did and see how you like it.
I have even ran forums before and have kicked people off that acted in this manner.... Just be careful on who you piss off.

Droid Explorer works, too
I believe Astro File Manager also has this ability in the Preferences section..
There's no option, it just installs. There is an option in 2.3 though.

It is due to att removing the option for their devices. If att release a 2.3.3 update you can be sure that it will be removed from there as well. The reason you see it now is that att is the only one that does it and we are working with the euro version
I understand. Every custom rom I've seen just installs even though the option is not there.

There aren't many threads in development and only one that says PERMANENT ROOT and one that says S-OFF.
Anyway, just s-off your slide then install the superuser apk.
I recommend reading completely through the S-OFF, Permanent Root, and Clockworkmod 4.0.0.9 threads completely before starting, though, so you know what you'll be in for.
It's definitely a lot better once you root it, and you aren't kidding about a ton of bloat. We're still working out the best ways to and what you can get rid of as far as the bloat goes.
Funny that you mention that, because i'm almost done typing up another segment to my bloat removal thread, probably have it posted within the next twoish hours. Had the day off today, so I could sit down and write it all out.
Looking forward to seeing you on the other side of S-OFF/Root.
Sorry to sound new but what is s-off mean?

I recommend reading through all the threads and there posts in this section before proceeding. As this phone is new, there aren't that many and most of your questions will be answered before you even ask them.
Given the complications that could arise from the actions you wish to perform you are definately going to want to brush up on your use the search functions in this forum and out.
Not only will it take less time, but you may find something of interest or import that you can then in turn share with the community.

Just wanted to quote this to emphasize the importance of reading and completely understanding what you are doing BEFORE you attempt to root. It is not an easy process, but it isn't hard if you understand all the steps before hand. By reading all the posts and getting a strong grasp on the entire process, you will also see common mistakes, and not so common mistakes others have run into. It will make the whole thing that much easier for you.
That said, rooting has many advantages. Even without custom roms for these devices yet, just being able to remove all the bloatware, and in some cases replacing preinstalled apps with other ones from the market, such as the notepad app, will give you more internal ROM, it will also greatly improve battery life. My battery life more than doubled just by removing many of the preinstalled apps.
Plus you will have a lot of fun once custom roms start hitting the streets. I'm dying to see how these phones run with CM.
Hi! I just got my first Android Phone.
The HTC Inspire.
I've been told I could speed up this phone but I'm also curious to know what else I could do with it?
I used to have an iPhone and I would just change the theme and stuff...
So, I suppose my question(s) is/are;
1. How can I speed up my phone?
2. What can I do with my phone?
3. Is there a site where I can browse custom themes for my phone?
4. how do I add custom ringtones/ringback
5. What are some basic things I should get before I start modding my phone and what are some neat basic add-ons out there to make my phone look "neato"
thanks for taking the time for reading this.
Really? It's here in the forum.
Wow...really...wow. do they not still play the noob video about searching when you first sign up for the site?

Swearing is not allowed in the forums. Only warning. Now as far as the other posts. Welcome to XDA and please do read over the rules you agreed to when you joined. You are expected to search for your answers instead of opening a new thread. Before you brick your phone (make it useless and non returnable) Take a few hours and read up on the stickies. Search around some and read some more. what you are doing is nothing like the Iphone, this is real hacking. Not a simple Security override like jailbreaking. If done wrong you could end up with more problems then you can handle.

Today (10/27) I got notified of an OTA on my Skyrocket, and I haven't heard anything about one. I am running 4.0.4, rooted, with CWMR v5.5.0.4.
I did a nandroid backup, backed up all my apps with TB, and set SuperSU to survival mode. Then I let the OTA download, it installed and then it rebooted - into recovery. I continued the reboot from CWMR and when it finished the boot, the OTA said it was interrupted and couldn't finish. I cannot find a zip file on the phone anywhere to manually flash.
Tried this twice with the same result. What is going on? Where did this OTA come from anyway? What should I do? I think rebooting into recovery is interrupting the process somehow, but I am at a loss as to what to do now.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

So this post could've been left at one reply telling the guy that he can't install and should've looked in general. But no, feeling the need to further stomp the guy into the dirt was at the top of the priority list. If you saw someone already make the point, why not report and move on? Saves a lot more time.

I'm not really lazy, I just don't have all day to hang out on a forum like some other people. I told you that I did a quick search and when I couldn't find an answer, I asked a question - in the Q&A section.
Sorry I'm not an expert in everything and ruined your day by asking a question.
You could have just ignored my post, but I guess you needed to prove how superior you are. I'd looked at some of your posts and a lot are like the one above - no help, lots of ego.
Thanks for the no help. The whole point of this forum is share information and help each other out. Guess you missed that stickie.

In his defense I was able to find an answer to your question on Google fairly quickly, but then again I have no clue what you Googled.
Still, the first reply gave an answer to your question and crazy came in well after that was posted. He didn't have to, yet he went out of his way to make you feel like crap.

OTA Update can not be Done on Rooted phone. Not worth going back to stock for this Little Update. Wait for Jelly Bean....
He didn't make me feel like crap - complete strangers do not do that for me. It's just annoying because posts like that can drive people away.
However, I did feel bad after I realized that there were several other threads on the same topic. I usually make an effort to avoid duplicate posts, but in this case I was in something of a hurry. In any event, I found my answer - I'm not taking the update, it's not worth the effort to go back to stock recovery.
Thanks!

There's a good amount of normal people on here. If the site was how you describe it they shouldn't let anyone who isn't a developer join. "U NO MAKE ROMS OR KERNELS U NO WORTHY OF FORUM" is basically what's spewing from your mouth. Have whoever's in charge kick every single member off of the site if they're not a dev since that's the attitude you wanna have.
Otherwise, stop being such a damn bully and stop giving the site a bad rep. He made a mistake and got his answer. You clicked the thread, saw the answer and still decided to pummel him. That's called "being an asshole".

Very cool story. However, the forum is called xda developers and this is a place for developers. Read the rules and ask the moderators what this place is about, and they will tell you the same thing. Also, you have a potty mouth.

The basis of my post was that not everyone on here is a dev, regardless of if the site is called xda developers. Don't throw that up as an excuse to be a jerk because he's not the only non-developer in this forum or on the site.
And stuff like this makes me angry. Like, I could understand if you gave him an answer and then laid into him, but you just flamed him. My apology for swearing.

I am going to receive my Nexus 7 in couple of days and I have started reading the respective forums. I got scared when I saw one of the threads has more than 1000 pages i.e. more than 10,000 posts I have to read to avoid falling on others' mistakes or to avoid repeating a question.
With such thread it is next to impossible to read it and keep the device in the safe side from mistakes which were faced by other users.
Therefore, I would suggest if there is a general Rule in all replies or posts to mention the word [Problem] in the starting of any post.
If this will be followed, it will be easier for users to search for the problems which others faced in a particular thread for a ROM, app, mod, etc...
Hope my idea is clear.
Or just Google search your problem and append xda and your device at the end of the query

The last pages of kernel, rom and tweak releases contain and cover the biggest parts of what's new and what could happen. You're never alone with a problem. Some development sub forums have guides for nearly everything.
Looks the idea isn't good. Anyways it was just and idea.
