GPS issue - Thunderbolt General

Is there any permanent fix to the GPS on a AOSP Tom because I hate the sense Rome they are just to heavy for my liking and I am currently running liquid smooth 3.1 and it runs super smooth the only problem is GPS. I tried going to a sense rom and then flashing liquid smooth 3.1 but it only worked for one night then back to no clue where I am...I was wondering because GPS is really important for when I work out. I have tried many sense roms and when I start using them its great for a day then it seems it just doesn't want to cooperate they freeze and I have to reboot and they take forever to reboot. So I really want to stay with my current rom because it is like night and day with reliability. If GPS had a permanent fix I would probably have no reason to try and find another rom. Thank you in advance for any help...

This has been a issue for certain, but there seems to have been a fix. Have you installed the network location apk from the latest sense rom. The apk has been posted many times. If you have the apk installed, have you nandroid your current setup and then flashed a sense rom to get a initial gps lock. Once you have the lock then restore your setup. I run cm7 and get instant lock.

GPS on ATT stock better then any custom rom?

When I had the ATT stock I got the lock in seconds. After flashing and putting different ROM its like 5-10 min.
Is there a difference in the gps.conf or anything else?

The one I am on (Android Revolution 5.1.8) and GingerBeast (2.1.2) I had before this, I generally got lock in seconds, and with an accuracy of 5-10m.
I would say the GPS on sense based roms with the correct gps.conf file works just as good as the stock rom.
Right now I'm using Android Revolution 5.1.9 and I get almost instant lock (about 5 secs) and 5~7m error.
Radio and RIL also play a very large part in it as well, I have had great luck leaving the gps.conf file as is and just flashing the updated stock radio/RIL combo. Locks in seconds unless obstructed.
This also includes CM7 Nightlies after 57ish.

Running Leedroid and getting lock in seconds down to 10 foot accuracy! Best I've had in any configuration. Running latest stock radio.
Running leedroid and my GPS is rock sold. While driving @70mph I get 10/10 in less then 10 seconds. New radio and ril.

Works fine for me on cm 7. I don't turn it off and on. With gingerbread its really not necessary in aosp type roms it only activates when needed the power drain is minimal.
funny, i just flashed back to the stock rooted rom with sideloading (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058042) because I've realized I had ZERO dropped calls or connection issues on the stock rom. i was using ar4g 3.7 anyways because I found it to be the most stable and quite quick. wish it had a custom kernel.
back to the point, I had issues getting GPS working on that too, even with matching ril and radio. hopefully I won't have any more issues with this rom
For myself, it was much better when I was on stock rom, but since I love testing out new roms, I've learned to live with it... At least it'll still work most of the time.

I think stock GPS SUCKSSSSS!
Dang I was just playing with this guz I'm kinda a GPS freak, and this Inspire, if one thing sucks, it's the GPS. Forver to get locks, and closest accuracy radius ever achieved is 7 meters....any suggestions? GPSFix, GPS Essentials doesn't seem to help. Ugh...guz me likes me my accurate GPS on my phone thingy....I was hoping that when I root it would improve but this feature probably doesn't get a whole lot of attention form the devs (?)
Edit: It is marginally better than the aged iPhone 3G I had, but I took it apart when it almost dead (I kilt it off by some wild ass idea I was going to refurb it) and there were signs of oxidation around the GPS antenna, which makes sense because my perception was that the performance degraded over time.

CM7?

So I have been rooting my phones for a long time, flashing dozens of roms, kernels, etc, but never tried CM7..I have done some research but still not totally sure on whether to try it or not, I figured I could run both CM7 and theory through backups and just flash one or the other on different days...CM7 seems to be the most popular download...should I give it a try? Can I run LPP on it?
Been running CM on my original Droid since it was available and now running it on my Tbolt so I may be biased but YES you should give it a try. Only you can decide what ROM works best for you. CM is highly customizable with not a lot of "eye candy" out of the box. It works and works well for me.
Flash it, you won't be disappointed. LPP works.

LP+ works better than ADW Launcher on CM7, and CM7 COMES WITH ADW Launcher.
I haven't tried theory, so I can't compare, but I've been running cm7 for a couple weeks and have been very happy with it.

I've also been using CM since my OG Droid so I have a bias as well. I've tested the bamf roms too. CM does not have all the glitz and glamor but its super functional and fast. Its not without some bugs but nothing that would make you not not want to try it out. The last update kicks ass. In my personal experience don't use the purging of assets option. I'm also going to test out the latest MR2 radio as I'm am currently running the previously leaked 2.5.

I just recently took the cm7 plunge after running almost every sense rom out there. I will not be returning to sense. Cm7 is the smoothest I've tried and the ability to switch themes every other day keeps the flash junkie in me happy as well. Give it a shot man. I think you'll be pleased.

Ive also had CM7 since my OG but actually my OG didn't really like CM some phones just don't like certain roms. Just flash it, its probably the most stable and you will get the best battery life out of any rom available for the Tbolt
I'm running CM7 w/the new OTA 2 radio.
Just make sure you d/l the correct version of CM7 for whichever radio you are using.
I haven't had any issues w/GPS - the only problem I have is w/my beautiful weather widget not even coming close to telling me where I am, lol. Weather bug (free) is working though, when I refresh it finds me.
I came off of Bamf stripped 1.8 w/the original radio and did things in this order:
Wiped data & dalvik 3x each.
Flashed the ROM (did NOT reboot)
Flashed the GApps (then I rebooted - of course had no service but I wanted to make sure the ROM was working)
then I flashed the 2.5 radio AFTER the ROM.
That radio worked fine for me, but I wanted the OTA version so I did that a couple days later.
I DID NOT use ROM manager, I did it all via recovery/boot menu.

no reboots?? on what rom version?
stock.
there is no "best" rom ever. opinion varies. don't be lazy. Download and try them yourself.
Currently running this with stock kernel, remember to remove CRT animation, they cause reboots sometimes: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1327641
Not a single reboot, been running it for a week.
I have to say, what works for me is InsertCoin 3.4.2 (based on ruu 2.08, GB 2.3.5, Sense 3.5, Stock HTC Kernel). Simply amazing! Unparalleled performance, unshakabley stable, great add-ons, and power consumption is super. I have tried MOST Roms and this one, in my opinion, is in its own league!
But, u should try out a few to see what works for you.
Cheers
There is no "best" ROM.
In the end it's all down to experience and personal preference.
Try a few out and use what you like the best.
Personally i like ARHD because of the frequent updates and good support when you have a problem. Plus it's stable and fits all my needs.
My favorites to date have been InsertCoin 3.4.6 and 2.5.5-2, ARHD 3.6.7 and Virtuous Sensation 2.2.0. All stable, with great performance.
But seriously, you're doing yourself a disservice by not just messing around flashing a couple of roms and kernels yourself.
I'm happy with my ARHD 3.6.X.X... smooth on daily use....
I would recommend Insert Coins 2.5.5-2, really stable, absolutely nothing wrong with it. Give it a try, I'm still using it.
CM7 has been rock solid for me with the Faux kernel. No random reboots ever.
I like Roms with a lot of Sense stuff removed. I currently run Hyper NonSense 2.0 which is a ICS 4.0.3 Rom and I love it. Some will not care for the camera or for the fact that it has been removed of sense but I like it that way. Like many have said just make a nandroid of what you currently have and just start flashing new roms and see what meets YOUR needs.
I am looking for a stable rom as well. The problem with flashing and trying many roms is that for me the process takes way to long to get back operational.
My main goal is to eliminate the screenshot issue with the sensation.
With insert coin 4.06 the issue has gone away but I am experiencing more closes and app problems than ics is worth.
I would appreciate any tips to flashing more efficiently and a stable rom without the screenshot issue.

after going through every rom, 95% have had the odd reboot, every rom is great, and respect to the hard working devs, but two I have used, have had great battery, and no reboots, 1.... Android Revolution HD and 2... Supersensation by the god LeeDroid
Insetcoin ,ARHD,MIUI ,all great for me but there more I haven't tried more than 4 from different devs so far I am using ARHD .6.0.2 Now which is ICS based and is great performer (battery life speed) I had 2 random reboots when I first installed the ROM but after that everything was smooooooth!!!
As for the reboots on cooked ROMs in general is hard to avoid since the devs tweak stuff all the time to make ROMs better and that might cause some conflicts from time to time plus they add other things from deifferent versions of ROMs out there, the main idea is to pick a ROM with very good support and updates
Funny thing though I wa getting occasional reboots on my HTC desire before root
Worth doing some research and experimentation your self .

I'll start with my current personal favorite - energy rom has been working great for me, lasts at least 15-20 hours with moderate use and no issues at all. I've come to the conclusion that the original TmoUS radio works best for me, so rom's the recommend another radio I tend to stay away from, and I haven't bothered with ICS yet as it seems way to buggy currently.
For the above post, how are you currently flashing and restoring things? I generally download current ROM's into a folder on my home computer and keep them organized so I can go back to older versions easily if I want. For me, flashing and setting up a new rom is only about a 30 min. process at the longest. I generally do the following:
1. I try to make sure my phone has a full charge first, but not needed.
2. I transfer rom onto sd card
3. unplug phone
4. make sure Titanium Backup is current - if not I back up all apps that have been changed first
5. boot into recovery - full wipe/reset/etc - flash rom
6. reboot, let rom start and settle
7. sign into my google account and set up wifi
8. use titanium to fully restore my apps
9. enjoy my new rom
ARHD 3.6.12 works wonders for me. No reboots and it is snappy, bug free, and everything works.
For me, ARHD worked like a charm as well. Battery life almost doubled compared to stock ROM, and the phone is much faster, sense is much smoother.
I'm currently using insertcoin 3.4.6 and SebastianFM's edited stock kernel. It runs completely without fault, ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING still works, and works at speed. I'm toying with the idea of going over to ics, but don't know if it's stable yet or not. Bottom line is I don't have the time to frequently flash ROMs and reinstall everything every time I find issue with a ROM and want to change again, and at the end of the day it's my phone, I need everything to work.
Currently using InsertCoin 4.2.1.. extremily smooth

CM10

Hey I just wanted to know peoples opinions on what is the best CM10 Rom so far. Especially considering the things that dont work like MMS or tethering or Netflix (I dont think any work with it though)
I like it. It's clean and boost free.

Official CM10 nightly
mms aint working yet but should in next official nightly. which should be in a few hours... other than that, official definitely had the most stable release!
NFC also isn't working but hopefully it gets fixed soon including MMS.
You'll probably just want to roll with the officials. Most everything you want has already been or is soon to be merged.
Anyone get WiFi tether to work? It worked for me on CM9
Just a question. Does CM10 have the long press volume feature to skip tracks while the phone is asleep? Love this about synergy

i have used about a day and here are my thought
unlocked bootloader
i have cleaned cache format factory reset before install
after boot i have loaded my app with data not bloatware with toolbox pro
using go launcher no live wall paper and juice defender
rest of app are... well just application and few games.
and here is real pro and cons
Pro
Fast, it does the job, google and now other jb features are works perfectly
unlock bootloader can be easily done thanks you adam.
boot time is faster than what i used to use AOKP milestone 6.1
Con
UNSTABLE, within half a day rebooted like 3~4 times while i was doing something
who know how many times it rebooted while i wasnt looking.. it seems more because from battery status
there are few blank spots. i have no idea what is wrong kernel perhaps?
i am not sure i thought CM is made from AOSP so i thought it should be pretty stable but i guess not.
also i have car blue tooth device with handset free (GROM) it wont connect and my logitech one works perfectly
DATA also not stable it think for battery it tries to turn it off (i think it's from juice defender) but takes about 10~15 seconds before i get the data
if you dont have problem with rebooting at random times, some glitches and no softkey (it's nightly so i cant really say it's bad rom)
this is the ROM.. it's faster than any rom i have tried.. what do you guys think??
maybe i should have tried longer but for me it was too unstable.
does cm10 have any critical bugs??
So, I was curious about a couple things.
First, how do nightlies work? Do you have to go and download a new file every single night and flash it? Or is there something working with the ROM that will flash a new version for you as it comes?
Second, I was curious as to when you guys think that CM10 for the SGSIII will be stable to the point where all major things, data, keys, gallery, camera, MMS, bluetooth, etc, are working reliably? I'm incredibly pleased with the stock experience, but there's always something to be gained from custom ROM's and I'm looking forward to being able to use CM10 I just don't want to miss a big part of my phone.
Not meaning to hijack the thread or anything! I'll throw in my two cents too by saying that I'd recommend the official CM10 based on the fact that MMS seemingly works currently and I'm unsure of how it's doing on the unofficial ROM.

Again, its fully stable. In your "second" part, literally every single thing you listed is fully working and stable. Except soft keys which were actually disabled because they have the same purpose as hard keys and just take up valuable real estate. Yes, nightlies are every night but you can dirty flash if you're lazy. You only really need to flash once a major fix or update has been merged. Just follow the changelogs.
And for you, based on what you reported as not-working, I'd also say you got a bad flash or something. Mine runs almost identical to what stock JB ran on my GNexus. Only better with mods

[Q] (Q) Best sense 4.0 or ics sense 3.0 rom to use??

Just wondering which rom may be the most stable when it comesto ics and sense
As far as sense goes I think rooted stock or mik ROM is the only ones for that as for jb there is lots of ROMs out there I'm currently using official CyanogenMod preview 7 and I love it. Fast smooth stable but I would recommend you just try them all

sun_dream ported several ROMs, an ICS with Sense4 and Sense4.1a, as well as an ICS with Sense3.6. I never could get the Sense4 ROMs to work reliably on my phone, especially the headset audio (it is extremely picky about which earplugs it will accept). His ICS 4.0.3 ROM with Sense3.6, however, worked reasonably well for me, has great audio. There are two versions of it, one is based on Sensation 3.3.2, other is 3.3.3. I found the 3.3.2 to be the more stable and fluid with really good battery life. My only issue with it was sometimes data would drop off unexpectedly. It would come back usually on its own, but sometimes you'd have to toggle airplane mode to get it back. An annoyance. Also, there was a Gallery issue with it FC'ing. But, I solved that by ripping Gallery out of another Sense3.6 ROM and pushing it to my phone. You can read about that in the ROM's thread in the Dev forum.
But really, for overall stability and a ROM where everything works like it is supposed to work without having to jiggle and toggle and stand on your head or sacrifice chickens, Miktouch is the one I use every day. I do like the features of ICS and especially those of the new JB ROMs. But, this is my only phone and must work 100% 100% of the time.

Yes I must agree I use mik sense 3.0 cause its most reloable as of right now and everything works. Baytery lofe is not bad for sense also. Dont get me wrong I love cm roms bit need more stability also I hope cm based roms fix the video out.
EDIT: can someone post me links to some customizations for mik 3.0 would be greatly appreciated.
