[Q] How many apps can xoom hold? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm currently at 440 and counting, hoping to get to 1000 soon. How many apps can xoom could hold/what is an average number of apps.
It's over 9000!

Soon looks way off there! My question is how many do you actually use? I have maybe 50 and can't even think of 100.

I would assume you can use as many as your storage will allow.

why the hell would you need that many? I have like 30, if even.

I have 185 apps currently installed. All of which are used.

I have more than 300 available to me through Google Market and Amazon App Store.
However, after a recent crash, I decided to "streamline" everything and only reinstalled the 50 or so that I would really use.
The others are games, camera apps and "novelty" apps that never merited everyday use.

[APK] Brand new Market client

Not sure if anyone else has seen what the amazing work Android Devs have done on the Market, but it looks stunning. Heres a lonk to their blog w/ screenshots:
http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2010/12/android-market-client-update.html
Anyway, a test apk has been leaked and here it is!
http://www.mediafire.com/?31bn3e258jjpj8d
Just update the apk via Astro, or if that doesnt work, copy to system/app via Root Explorer, reboot, and enjoy!
MAKE SURE TO BACKUP THE OLD APK!

You just need to install it like you would any other app. No need to be rooted either.

I'm not even sure I like this new version... Bits are better. The "wheel" at the top should function as one (spin to change from apps to games for example), and it would do well to be smaller.
It's not all good news though..... Not only are Google bringing in this revised App but they are also changing the returns policy on 'Paid Apps'.
At the moment it is 24hrs but very soon this will automatically change to 15mins..... Yes, FIFTEEN MINUTES!

I can understand that for many it will not be an issue but for me it does suffer an impact.
A lot of my paid software has to be tested with other Apps and other people.
There is no way I can achieve this within 15 minutes nor would I wish to challenge one of my medical team to stop what he/she is doing just so as I can ensure the new App is tested within the new time lines.
Run of the mill games and non business applications should be fine but larger business orientated applications will I feel suffer.
They may end up having to take other measures to ensure sales targets are met.

I'm not totally convinced of that - most apps are pretty cheap (even the business ones) and I think a business can afford to drop £20 or so on a copy of an app for testing purposes, whereas perhaps a "casual" user might not.
For example, if I'm looking at rolling out Android phones to lots of users, and I want to check out 3rd party exchange integration solutions, it's going to cost me less than £20 to get full copies of both Touchdown and RoadSync.
YMMV of course!
I suspect we'll start seeing more free trial/time limited versions of software popping up.

Dave

They will suffer if they don't introduce what you are saying (which I totally agree upon).
Under this new time limit there's effectively four problems:-
1. Large Content Application Downloads
Apps that have significant amounts of downloadable data i.e. Maps, Game data files etc can depending on your speed take ages to download. As such there is no realistic way you can download all the data and test it within 15mins.
2. Time & Location Apps
Some Apps rely upon a time of day or location (alarm clocks, location based sound profiles etc). 15mins isn't enough time to evaluate these Apps.
3. Utility Apps
Apps such as over-clocking, battery resource monitors, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth location-based togglers etc. How do you manage to test these within 15mins.
4. Buyers Confidence
If you have an entire day to download and try an app, you're less likely to feel rushed to test, or pressured into keeping the app. By offering an entire day to "try-before-you-commit-to-buy" Google and the developer community are conveying a sense of confidence that the apps found in the Android Market are of such high quality that you'll like them -- after all, if you don't like them they'll give you your money back! That's a pretty confident sentiment, and it sets potential buyers at ease.
By rolling that back to just a quarter-hour, Google is essentially reversing that sentiment, making users less likely to make the purchase in the first place. Do the math: 15 minutes is a reduction in time of 98.9583%.
As a short-term measure I would like to see Google change the time-limit to say 2 to 4hrs.
Long term I agree I hope we now get to see more Apps being offered with a trial bases, i.e. you can test an App for seven uses, after this time if you wish to keep and use you pay for it.

1. yup, games with large downloads after installing will be an issue. An hout would be better. 24 hours effectively allowed you to complete a game so that was too much.
2. yeah but they generally have lite versions.
3. agreed.
4. Yeah, but 24 hours was way too much. 15 probably too little (although like GANJDROID I *generally* refund within 5 mins)
15 mins is better than nothing right? If the market started with 15 mins we would be happy. Fact is we were probably a bit spoilt by having a whole day.
On a positive note, I think that google wouldn't have done with without significant pressure, and I'd assume from large game companies. So, we might expect an influx of mega-high quality games as a result, something I'm (just about) willing to give up 23 hours and 45 minutes for!

Wow! Anyone else like Amazon Appstore better than Google's?

Well I just found one issue that I have with it. The header for the damn thing is too freaking large. Over half my screen is stuck with that header. Not much scrollable space for me. And that's on my HD2's large screen. I feel for those with less than 4" screens.

Not me. It is clumsy. Go to a catagory, like Utilities. Note half the screen is useless and you can see maybe 3 things at once.
Signing up and getting 1-click (required) turned on was painful.
Worst of all, after faking up some data and downloading Angry Birds Rio, and freezing their auto-starting app store in Titanium Pro, ABR wouldn't run!
Bogus in extremis.
So they have a few extra sorting or filtering options. Big deal. Google's beats Amazon's black & blue.
I downloaded the amazon app store just to get angry birds rio, then uninstalled the app store, and surprise surprise angry birds pops up a message telling me I need to reinstall the app store and log in. That's bogus right there. Both uninstalled. I'll wait until it shows up in the android market. I'm not keeping that piece of crap around just to play angry birds.
I think its a good market alt for non google phones/tablets.

No. I still think Market is better
It has some cool options, but lacks others. Such as uninstalling an app from it. Sure I can do it in adw and whatnot, but thats extra steps that I don't wanna have to take. Plus it counts every download as a "purchase", so I get an email every time I install an app, regardless of whether its paid or free. Theres no notification for the progress of your downloads. It also doesn't automatically open the install dialog if you're not in the app. So I think its got a lot of work before it even comes near the performance of the android market.
amazon is crap. ;D
App loves to run in the background ..... crappy.

Thanks for the review. Very useful for those of us debating whether to try it or not. Personally i don't see the need for having more than one Market. Exclusivity deals will lead to fragmentation and i would rather see everything in one place.

Wow, AT&T blocks non market apps?

That is so pathetic. Just another reason to hate that company.

You can use sideload wonder machine http://forum.androidcentral.com/android-sideload-wonder-machine/
Or root the phone and load a custom ROM that has non market apps enabled
the sideload wonder machine method is sipmple the only drawback is that the apps wont receive updates like they would from the market, if I'm not mistaken.
Also if I remember correctly if the app is to big for side load wonder machine, you can use adb push. There are always work arounds.

You can also consider rooting the device. I did mine with no issues at all. It's VERY easy, just time consuming. From start to finish, took me about 35 minutes. I already had EVERYTHING I needed to do this though, including the ROM I wanted.

[Q] Zinio on 3.1 update

I saw somebody mention that Zinio is included in the 3.1 update. Is this correct?
I had previously installed it with directions here, but it's a little funky. First, it gave me about eleven sample magazine issues. The size of the magazines on the library screen seems to be a little off and the app is otherwise quirky.
Everyone experiencing this, or was it because I had the other version installed? Any way to fix this?
Thanks!
As of today, Zinio is up on the market. Should be able to grab it on 3.0.

Cool, I'll just remove it and reinstall just to make sure everything is okay.
It keeps freezing on me when I try to open a Magazine for more info. Cant delete it as well since it came with 3.1. Going to try to install it from the app store as it keeps telling me to update it.
I kind of wish all of these free applications weren't pushed out to us. Especially since you can find most of these apps on the Market if you want them anyway. I have no use for Zinio and don't feel like rooting just to remove it. Though, compared to my DX, I definitely can't complain about bloatware. And, to be honest, most of the "bloat" added by ASUS has proved to be quite useful
Updated the version from market and it's works!
Free magazines.............hmmm....not bad!
Keep it up Asus...I love your bloat wares
First....free newspapers and now free magazines....hahaha....iPad 2 Killer!
Can anybody confirm that the preinstalled version includes the free magazine subscription offer detailed in Zinio's press release?
http://www.prnewswire.com/news-rele...roid-market-for-tablet-devices-122859609.html
If not, might be worth trying to install the app first, then let it upgrade when Asus' update hits for the US market...
The free newspapers thing is a total waste of time for me -- seven free issues is next to nothing. A free two year subscription to one of 25 magazine (or is it all 25? The press release isn't clear) seems quite worthwhile though.

And suddenly the lightbulb came on. Of course you're right, the way it was phrased just threw me off. It's one issue of each magazine listed. (Well, they've actually listed 25 magazines as included, and per your own experience there are only 23 available, but near enough the same thing.)
...which to me is a complete waste of time, and makes me again wish Asus would stop jamming this bloat down our throats. Like the newspapers, it is one more thing I'll never use, and one more icon obscuring the apps I actually do want to use. (Not to mention wasting space and resources on my tablet.)
Thus far the only thing I've found worthwhile among Asus' preinstalled apps is Splashtop Remote Desktop, and that can currently be bought standalone for just 99 cents.
I really wish Asus would give us a version without all the bloatware installed, and just let us buy our own apps. Saving a few cents on the one app I do use isn't worth it to me to have all the other junk I'll never touch on there too...
Probably because Zinio pays them per install or account created from one of their devices...
(I'm guessing.)

Yup, that's usually the case with this kind of bloat -- the manufacturer gets paid to put it all on there, in the hopes that it'll lead to you paying the software company to use the product that's stuck on your machine.
I doubt they're getting paid much to stick all the junk on, though, and I'd happily pay $10-15 to have it all taken back off.

Actually had Zinio on my iPad and enjoyed it. Wife had cheap o magazine and I had car and driver magazine quite cheap.
As for splashtop our version can be set to the ASIs resolution of 1280x800 whereas the market version only goes to 1024x768. So I don't consider any of it bloatware but rather good apps I would have purchased anyway.

Keep getting error with preinstalled bloatware "zinio reader". I went to the market and DLd "zinio" which seems to be the same exact thing as zinio reader except a much larger app. The mags are free which is pretty cool but once they aren't free I'll be deleting that ish' stop the bloatware!!!

It also sucks for people who bought SwiftKey on Amazon. The app has been removed from Amazon and no signs of SwiftKey X being available.
