Ok, so last night after work, I realized my phone was dead. So after getting in the car I connected the charger only to get a blinking amber light. It wasn't the regular slow/rapid blinking I usually get from a dead battery. It was very quick and intermediate, and wouldn't charge at all. Well leaving it on the charge overnight didn't help so I ordered a new battery. And since I'm so impatient I came up with something so I wanted to share
I looked at the battery and found a negative and positive symbol. From there I got to thinking. "Can I use a battery to charge the battery?" So I grabbed a AA out of the remote and some wire and connected the terminals. low and behold nothing happened.
A AA battery only has 1.5v and on my charger it puts out 5v. So I grabbed some other batteries and put them together (3 total for 4.5v). I don't want to go over 5v into the battery. After a while I put the battery in my phone. Again, nothing.
So I thought. "What if I connected the battery to the battery to the phone" Kind of like a jumpstart. (See picture)
BINGO!
I now have a solid amber light. And right now as I write this I am letting it sit. I don't wanna screw it up lol. So I will provide updates as it continues.

that's more battery effort then i think most people would put into.
as was said in the samurai showdown games... VICTOLY!!
Well, going back to a blackberry gives all the motivation in the world
Sounds like a kernel issue I had a few bad kernels in the past that didn't allow me to charge if it was a bad flash. I would invest in a wall charger and maybe 2 extra batteries on ebay easy way to charge your batteries outside your phone.

Well the battery will drain itself in a few hours. I have tried other kernels and roms. The new battery will help.
But as for now. I have to go back to stock because I need to get it reactivated. I hate verizon.

it's funny because if you walk in to a Verizon store with a rooted phone and show it to them they get all excited and ask about the rom, etc & may even show you their rooted phone. had that happen with a manager who was intrigued by the das bamf rom i had on my thunderbolt awhile back.
Haha I'd be too scared. The guy I saw today was cool though and they usually aren't.
I have boot manager so my rom is still on my sd so it's not like I lost anything.
That's gorgeous... hahaha.

This is the understated truth of the year. I just inherited my mom's thunderbolt and I was previously using my BlackBerry 8530.
Never going back
oh hey, wanted to also mention that sometimes those pins that make contact with the battery can bend slightly and cause the battery to not charge/phone not turn on... i've had to take needle nose pliers once and "fix" one of the pins.
also, if you take a very small amount of automotive 'spark plug grease', and apply it to the connectors, it ensures a good solid contact. (it also works putting it on the antenna pins on the back cover).
just don't use electrical spray otherwise you'll have weird grease stuck behind your screen like on mine. ^_^

how abt charging the battery when it reaches at 20%!! why u letting ur battery reach 10%? u can charge it whenevr u want. the Li ion battery does not have a memory effect. u can top it whenevr u want..
Magician is not supposed to run dry. Also, AFAIK, I think Li ions aren't supposed to be run dry, damaging I think.
Magician will automatically shut down extraneous functions to save battery and preserve sufficient juice to maintain memory for a few hours despite your efforts.

So buy a new battery has solved ur problem?
I had this on my Magician too. At about 30% or so... I bought a new battery and sold the device right away, so I never found out if that solved the problem. But...
I have switched to a Mio device, and on their site under Support, I found some interesting info. If you fully discharge before recharging, the battery will live for 300 charges. If you recharge at 30%, it will live for 20.000+ recharges! It doesn't get any clearer than that!
May not be a battery problem
I'm having similar problems. Initially it goes off when the battery level drops below 50%. I bought a new battery and even at 99% the device goes off. Now I have to press and hold the 'ON' button for it to boot up. I am taking it for repairs since I am convinced it is not really a battery problem.
we have the same problem .. any help ?
I got the same problem, but I solve it myself, don know it work with your phone ornot
A day, I take off the back cover of battery when it is working, device off. Then it is on normal, but some time, it turn of automatically. I try to make the back cover and the back of device clean and take of the protect film of LCD, then now, it work OK. I am lucky
Please let us know the outcome of your repair. We have the same issue at 40% and I am not sure whether a new battery will solve the problem

Ive just changed to a new battery and found out that my old battery was swollen up a bit on the surface. Comparing to the new battery, the surface was flat. So if you have the same problem, maybe you should check your battery shape and condition first.
Good luck.
I was wondering if I can disable charging through cradle/usb, and only allow the device to charge from the power outlet?
Yes this is possible, you will need a spare mini-USB cable that you don't mind if it gets damaged.
There are 4 wires/pins in a USB cable. Basically you need to cut/remove the power wires/pins. You can do this on the cable, or on one of the connectors, probably easier to do it on the big normal USB connector rather than the mini-USB Connector.
The 2 outer-most pins are the ones that carry power, so cut one or both of these. Here is a diagram and further details to help you: http://pinouts.ru/Slots/USB_pinout.shtml
Good luck!
Can't you do it within the setting:
Settings -> System -> Power -> Advanced and take tick out of "when device is turned on, do not charge the battery when connected to a PC"
This option is not available with all ROMs. My Cingular 8525 does not have it, but my AT&T Tilt does! So go figure... Perhaps someone could make this option a cab.. (I wouldn't even know where to start)

Just out of curiosity, why would you want to disable USB-charge? save laptop battery?
I don't think that its healthy for my device's battery that's all. These batteries have limited charging cycles, and charging it 5 times a day for a short period of time is something I want to avoid doing.

it's been documented pretty much everywhere how lion batteries work and how they should be treated.. all mention that discharging them too low causes them to become less efficient. all documentation is pretty consistent. i doubt they just whipped that out their ass, especially from the people that invented those batteries.
so tell the wise creator to learn to accept some facts of life.

Yes, this is true.... The LED turns green on 99% and never touches 100%. But i did not care much about it as I was more interested in flashing ROMS...though this is a problem.... I have also ordered Anker Batt... waiting for the courier...
I noticed mine did this last night. I just kept it plugged in and it eventually hit 100%. I took about 9 hours for it to hit 100%. Hope its not like that every time. Ill be finding out tomorrow.

yes same here....what can b causing it.....can it b smthing wrong in s-off procedure
Could it be something to do with the 2.3.3? Cause my battery acted strange even S-ON so I don't think it's the S-OFF procedure itself that caused this. Might be something something to do with battery drivers or something?
AFAIK Li-Ion batteries should never be charged to 100% because it shortens their life, most phones have a safety-mechanism to prevent overcharging.
Its intended to stop charging at 95% to 99%, but will almost always show that the battery is charged to 100% so the customer wont complain about it.
yes HTC is lieing to us, but for our own satisfaction.
So after we flashed the CWM recovery this "feature" is not there anymore and we can see the true charging state.
By plugging the power in and out over and over again to reach 100% you just damage your battery with those short charging cycles.
I read a interrestion thread about it in the Nexus S forums awhile ago and Wikipedia seems to confirm it.
I hope I could help you.

you get what you paid for. honestly, I wouldn't trust one of those.
As for the Seidio, last night it lasted me 10+ hours with heavy usage(constant music, gaming) and it was at 39 percent or so when I plugged it in.
Today, i have had it unplugged for four hours, listening to music around the same amount and it is at 90 percent so it's a major plus
before 10 percent would last me maybe 30 minutes max if i'm constantly listening to music, and this is only my second cycle. waiting until it's completely broken in
I will post a full report once I actually kill the thing lol

So this is what my battery looks like after two days of usage. With music playing, downloads happening, standby standing by calls being taken, etc etc. So I guess this battery really does this phone some good as I never have been able to squeeze this much juice out of my phone. Oh did I mention I was playing games hours at a time.
I recommend this product a lot, but I don't necessarily deem it an absolute need, but close to it, especially for excessive use
I was going it let it drain, but I think I'm going to throw it on the charger now, as the major drawbacks are a longer charge time, and thr size....which once you're used to it isn't as bad as it seems, I actually like the extra weight, and the way it feels.
Anyways if you're willing to shell around 60 bucks out for more juice(a lot more) then I highly recommend it

Very interested in the biggest capacity battery I can get for around ~40-60 bucks.
I just got my phone four days ago, only just now let it go through a complete drain cycle.
But I was doing homework today and it didn't even make it through a full day of classes for me (From 7am to 4pm). Mostly just listening to music, calculator, a new text every twenty or so minutes, quick google shots during English classes.
Really disappointed by that. But if an extended battery will fix it (Also going to pick up a portable power pack if I can), I have to ask ... does this phone only draw 500 mA maximum when charging? I use the Apple USB charger because it's output is 1 Amp, the Samsung charger is 750 mA. Don't see a difference really - they both take a REALLY long time to charge.
....................
..................
I'll take it, then.
Thanks a bunch for the tests.

Do you have this battery yourself, and if yes, what can you say about it?
So... Starting yesterday, about 5:00pm, my battery started charging extremely slow. I plugged my phone back up since the battery went down pretty quick at about 9:30am in the morning. It went to 30% battery and from there, I don't view if it's going up anymore. I took a screenshot at 9:42am and once closer to 10am, also taking another as I typed this. I've also tried 2 different chargers, and multiple outlets.

The last screenshot, I just hit 31%... Literally changed when I clicked the battery tile.
When you tried multiple chargers, did you also try different USB cables?
You need to rule out if it is slowly charging or if it is draining quickly whilst charging. Try turning it off and charging.

I attempted that yesterday when I first noticed it yesterday. I plugged it up, and left it off while I went to the market.

This is why I asked you to charge whilst off. It rules out software as an issue if the same result is seen. If you've changed the cable AND power source, it can only really be the port.
Is it stock unrooted?? Does seem like the kernel gets involved in charging whilst off too , so if you're not stock, I would consider reverting to stock.

I swapped back and fourth between cables and reboots after returning to stock. I went to stock 4.4 and upgraded all the way through. I then noticed it started to charge faster, or the battery actually read that it was going up. I had Current Widget on my home screen which seemed to be pushing around 900MaH the whole time.
For now, it's back to normal, I believe. Thanks RootSU ~:good:

Sorry for the late reply, it I've downloaded CurrentWidget where I can see the mA output. The OEM charger seems to be pushing out at 20-300mA. I've plugged up yesterday to an old HTC cable that I have, and although it's all beat up and near its end, it's pushing out 300-600mA.
I believe the original OEM output is near 1000mA. Possible that it was my charger that was faulty. I've been using a lot of different chargers in the past week testing with the mA's.
