Changing the SMS alert sound?

How can I use one of my MIDI files as the SMS alert sound?

i've never been able to change any of the non ringtones to anything but sounds present on the predifined list myself

Not sure if you are able to use MIDI files as ringtones/alert sounds. You may need to convert it to WMA or, as I have done, WAV. Once converted just copy the files to \WINDOWS on your PDA and the sounds will appear in the list.

is there a way to;
A) change the actual volume of the alert (I know about turning vol up/down) but what I want here is a louder alert when I recieve a message.
B) can I download new wav files to add to the default ones with myxda2i?
B1) if the above is answered yes, can you advise how I install them please?

I would like to add to this.
I have downloaded .wav files and copied them into the windows directory, but when I go to listen to them in the sounds and notifications section they don't play, this has happened to all .wav files apart from one so far.

Look for the Nokia sms sound file uploaded somewhere in this forum. it works on my imate pocket pc and is loud.

I've also noticed that many wav files are some how encoded in mp3. So they have a file ext of .wav but ppc will only play pure wav files. If you switch the file ext on the wav's that do not play to .mp3 they will sudenly play in windows media player. this will tel you that it is not pure wav encoding.

if you choose properies of the wav file on the pc
it should ms ad pcm as format then it's a pure bred

loud ringtones, and how to install new tones for SMS

Hiya,
Im using a Universal with WM6, the built in tones arnt loud enough for me. I downloaded a few more tones but they dont seem to be loud enough either, can anyone recommend some really loud tones?
Also, im trying to figure out how to install my own ringtones for SMS messages. I cant seem to see the same tones i have on the incoming call list of tones.
Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.

a free pc program like goldwave can amplify audio files default vol lvl
and sms tones need to be wav

is there any way to convert the standard wm ringtone to wav format so i can use it as a sms tone? one of them sounds like it would be perfect for sms.
also, do i put the sms tones in the same ringtone folder (im using wm6)

easy quick way is to use the free pc program called cdex it let you convert just about any audio format to any other

For sure put it in Windows folder or My documents\Rings, but it only works for calls. For alarm you must use a .wav file, only under Windows folder.

Only .wav files will work for SMS/MMS alerts.
You copy them to your Windows directory and also to Windows\Rings.
Make sure you have everthing for SMS and MMS turned on in your sound settings. If it doesn't work, try selecting another file. Sometimes not all .wav files will work.

If you put an .mp3 file under windows folder, it will work for sms, maybe and for mms.

The problem is bigger:// Even system files are not playing the sms sound. Other files copied to windows directory also doesn't give a single sound of incomind message.

mp3 as sms/mms
i use mp3s for mms/sms. put them in your my documents folder on your phone. then go to settings-sounds&notifications-over to notifications-under event pick new mms or new sms then select the sound, it will be there

How does Android detect custom ringtones / notifications? It doesn't seem consistent!

I recently got a new phone (S22 Ultra) and was moving over my notifications and ringtones from my old phone (Oneplus 9). I noticed some weird behaviors in how Android detects Ringtones / Notifications so I thought I'd ask here.
First of all, when I moved everything, I moved them under one folder, /sdcard/backups/audio, and a folder for ringtones / notifications. When I opened the ringtone picker, all of my ringtones where there except the .wav and .mp3 ones, all the .ogg ringtones were present, such as Rhythm by OnePlus. So I selected it as my ringtone and it worked fine. Then I went to change the SMS sound and found that all of my notifications, even .wav and .mp3 are present, and as well as my mp3/wav ringtones, which is weird since this is a Notification area and not a ringtone area.
I then proceeded to move the audio files from /sdcard/backups to their respective folders, /sdcard/Ringtones and /sdcard/Notifications, but I wanted to separate them so I created a folder for Cyanogen, folder for Oneplus9, and a folder for my own music ringtones. Now when I go to select the ringtones, all of my ringtons from Custom and Cyanogen folders are present, even mp3/wav, but not a single OnePlus Ringtone or notification is there, which is weird. So I deleted the folder, and copied them again, but they were not there. So I converted them to wav and back to ogg, and they were there again. Then I proceeded to change the notifications, and surprisingly the OnePlus notifications where not there (Free, Meet... etc). So I again, converted them to wav and back to ogg, and they're there again. I decided to make a copy of the folders and put them under /sdcard/backups/audio again, and now the Sound Picker is detecting 2 of every .ogg file, so I have the OnePlus ringtone Rhythm twice, the notification Free twice and so on.
So I thought it was a Samsung bug, and I experimented with my OnePlus 9 and to my surprise there was a similar behavior. If I add a song, then move it to another folder, then the song is no longer detected as a ringtone no matter where I place it unless I place it back in the same folder I originally added it to.
What is exactly going on here? Is there some sort of hash that is being done to map an audio file to a specific location, so if the location is changed it just ignores it? Or what is exactly going on here?
Android 11 on OP9 and 12 on S22U.
