I'm From Australia so my carrier is telstra
My desire s came pre installed with a bunch of crap
Some still useful though
Hoping there was an easy way to get rid of some of them
IV already tried manage applications but doesn't give an option to Uninstall

To do this, your phone has to be rooted and you have to install 'Root Explorer' from the Market. Then; follow this steps:
1. Open Root Explorer
2. Go to the root (a '/' is shown in the upperleft corner if you are in root menu)
3. Go to the 'system' folder
4. Inside the system-folder, open the 'app' folder
5. Find the app you want to uninstall, but don't delete it.. Instead, move it to another location so in case something goes wrong, you can move it back.
6. Reboot your phone
The only way(as far as I know) is rooting your device and uninstalling a tool which actually supports this option, normally the stock application manager will not allow this. I have seen this in the forums already so I recommend to do a little more searching.

You forgot to tell you actually need to ROOT the phone to successfully use root explorer
You have to root your phone in order to do that. Most providers put those preinstalled apps in the system directory where you need root permissions.

yes i saw it, sorry
found rooting my vibrant then using titanium backup did the trick...you can backup the apps then before you remove them...and what I did as I started slowly experimenting with what was safe, is the freeze option in titanium backup...so you can basically keep the apps inactive without having to risk removing them...
so you can see what if any negative affect it may have.

i havent tried it yet but it gave me the option to Uninstall the programs i want rid of

they should forbid those preinstalled apps. it always sucks..

Correct. System apps and user apps. It also enables you to remove them. That includes any manufacturer's bloatware.

I want to rename the extensions or remove some of the apps in my droid 2 like the Amazon app. I have just rooted the device and installed Epic Unleashed 2.5. What free application(s) allow me to do this? I have seen many threads about removing useless apps via the computer, but I don't want to do this. The lines of code seem intimidating to me . If you can give me a step by step guide and a list of some crappy applications that I can remove I would appreciate it.

I just rooted this morning (first time), then used root explorer from the Marketplace to go into the system/apps folder and add ".bak" to the end of the APK and ODEX files that I wanted gone via the "rename" function. I think root explorer was like $3 or something is all...

None so far all the Root explorers cost something. That's why I stick to my computer because I already paid for it.
It really isn't too difficult and once you develop an understanding of what you are doing you will gain the ability to troubleshoot on your own and create your own fixes or help others with rooting, or exploring new devices that come out.

I just rooted my Droid2 (first timer) and yes you can change the file extensions manually to get rid of them. If you're rooted, you can use Terminal Emulator (free from Market). It's reversible. I just followed these directions: limitlessdroid.com/2010/08/28/rooting-101-bloatware/
Not messing around with it too much.. I only removed Blockbuster.apk.

U can also use titanium backup to remove stock apps. The free version allows u to remove any app providing that u are fully rooted.

I flash roms a lot and there is something I need to find a fix for.
Once the flash is done I boot up and start initial phone setup menu. I have to sign into my google account at this stage obviously. So once that's done the first thing I want to do is restore my apps with titanium, so I go to the market for it, but the market straight away starts downloading ALL my apps at once when I only want TB to download. Only way to stop it is to go through the entire app list and cancel all the downloads, which takes a while. I cant let the downloads go ahead as it's far too many megabytes.
So I want a way to install TB without using the market. I've tried creating the update.zip in TB options and the zip does get created, but when I flash it from recovery it doesn't install.
Can I get the apk from somewhere and install it that way (I know you can push from cmd prompt although I've never tried it), and if so is there a way to do it on the phone only, as I often flash roms when I'm away from the computer.
When you enter your google credentials, it'll ask you if you want to back up your data. Uncheck it. Once your past that screen go into settings > privacy and assure automatic restore is unchecked.
The apks are in /data/app/ by the way.

I'm very familiar with these options. I always leave the option to backup to google ticked in case I ever need it (unlikely), but I always have auto' restore unticked, so I'm pretty sure that the automatic downloading of my apps is because the market app recognizes that I own them all when I sign in with my google account, and not because of auto' restore - but correct me if I'm wrong.
So how would I install TB using the apk. Does it have to be done with my computer? Is there another way. Root explorer would be great, but I'd have to install that the same way, which renders it useless in this particular case. What do all you experienced people do to get round this. Or do you just get through it the same way I do???
You can extract your TB using root explorer and save it on your sdcard. Sometimes its stored in /system/app or /data/app.
Usually roms come with a file explorer, so once you have a rom installed go to its file explorer and install your backed up TB. That's how I usually do it. Hope that helps.

you the man Your post helped me figure some stuff out. Your thanks meter just went up by a point.
I use ns_collab most of the time and I did not realise it came with root explorer preinstalled until you mentioned roms coming with a file manager. I did a bit of research and discovered root explorer is preinstalled with ns_collab. I never realised it was part of the rom as I already own root explorer so TB always restores my copy.
I've already made a copy of the TB apk files, so I reckon i've got this sorted for next time I flash a rom.
Just one more thing to check. The apk files I have backed up are:
com.keramidas.titaniumbackup-1.apk
and
com.keramidas.titaniumbackuppro-1.apk
Is this all I need to
I think you only need one of those files. One of em is the pro version. I only have one file and I install it like a regular apk file.

I've got the pro version - so I think this must be right. If you are on the free version and only use one file then I'm cookin
im using the pro version and i only have one apk file. pro restores faster with hypershell
can someone tell us if removing bloat thru root explorer will delete the whole app? Iv read that it does and that it doesnt and the apps still show? clarification on this would be appreciated.. thanks much!
I delete my apps using rootexplorer. I go through system/app and delete from there. Also you can use titanium backup and freeze your apps you don't want to use.

Click the Mount R/W button on the top so you can make changes.
I uninstalled them via titanium backup and they don't appear or run.

Can someone give us a list what all bloatware you can remove without damaging the software itself?
I use an app called Root App Remover, one click and they are gone, I recommend it.

Basically, you can use any application that can root uninstall. There's a dozen of them on the market.
I recently rooted my Skyrocket (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340526) but am unable to delete apps. I have full superuser access and have even installed a custom ROM already, but the only option when I go to "manage apps" is to delete the updated version. I've even tried deleting the apps using Launcher Pro's method (long holding on the trash icon) and it just says "Uninstall unsuccessful."
So, what gives? Why am I rooted and don't have full access over my apps??

EDIT: Also, just to add, I have apps that came with the stock phone (like AP Mobile, AccuWeather, etc.) that I can see in the manage applications list under ALL but they aren't in my app drawer. So I get the worst of both worlds: some apps I can't access and can't uninstall!
Root doesn't change the fact that the apps are protected system apps. The default uninstaller will still stop you from fully removing them.
You can easily download a free app from the market, such as Root Uninstaller, to remove protected system apps. Just be careful, as you can so remove vital system apps crucial to the operation of android with root Uninstaller. Only remove apps you are sure won't hurt the system.

Many of the roms don't have the bloat. Look them over and see if any fit your needs. You'll need rom manager (marketplace). Before flashing any of the roms for this phone, read the threads associated with each one, so you'll have an idea about any issues. Make sure you also understand the consequences of flashing a rom.
You dont need rom manager. I dont use it. But some people prefer it.

Keep in mind. You can flash the stock recovery tar and still take an ota update. But if you delete bloat you can not. Youll have to flash back to stock. Unless you have a nandroid backup with bloat intact.

For those who are new to this, like me, it is the easiest way, after looking over some of the guides.
And if you choose to use rom manager. You have to select the tmobile galaxy s2. Skyrocket is not listed. But it is almost an identical phone.
Just download titanium backup, it can uninstall protected apps.

Thanks for the help everyone. I just moved from the Atrix which didn't have protected systems apps after bypassing the bootloader.
I ended up installing "Sky Ice Cream Sandwich" which I thought didn't have bloatware but it still shows up... And I did use ROM Manager but that was just because I wanted to get into CWM easier.
Anyway, I found a list of apps I can uninstall here so I'll just be using Titanium Backup since I've already purchased it.

I work in a phone store. one of my jobs is to uninstall all internet related apps. i do this by rooting, installing link2sd, and uninstalling the required apps one by one. needless to say, this takes a very long time. any way to do a batch uninstall?
(the built in multi selct dosent work.)

Use Root Explorer to multi select all the apps you want and remove them. Not sure why you need link2sd though.

Then something is odd about it. As long as you have root and given root access to the explorer then ukulele should be able to delete the apks from system/app. If you can't I would find out why.

i was using es file explorer, rooted phone, set permissions to read/write. i clicked the root explorer option, and from there clicked uninstall system apps. i then multi selected, pressed uninstall. a message comes up saying "busy", underneath that it shows one by one uninstalling "app name". after that, i get a box saying task completed. i go to app drawer, all apps are still there. so i go into es file explorer, navigate to system folder, than into app folder. all system apks are there, so i multi select and press delete. at that point i get a message, cannot delete, the files are not found" (or something similar) at this popint i am exasperated, so i go into link 2sd, try from there, it works from there at that point i open this thread to see what im doing wrong.
Could you please even reply if someone tries to help you?
