OK so it seems my phone has an issue with any rom other than stock as I have tried them all and I have 3 things that happen: a. Phone will reboot on its on or b. The screen will go black with the buttons lit up. Or c. It will freeze on me. This is any rom other than bone stock. Any one know what could be the cause of this?

okay , your phone looks like hard to use.
what version/model is it ? is it possible you flashed GSM ROM to 4G Nexus S ? or 4G ROM to GSM ?
okay , your operator is AT&T , forget it ... it wouldn't be 4G
orginal MIUI and orginal CM7 , all the same ?
I haven't tried any miui roms but every rom I have tried has been for 9020s. I have tried bugles beast, NSCollab, oxygen, we scream for ice cream (which I fully expect to have issues but could not resist trying) , blanddroid, and nexusMV all with the same issue. I even tried several different kernels to see if that would make a difference but it didn't
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
There's a low chance your cpu can't take any voltages/frequencies outside stock kernel range. Because that black display/lit buttons thingy happens to me if I go too low on voltages or freq.
What are the stock voltage rages? So I can try that theory out?

i only heard about 9020A,F,T and 9023
default MIUI doesn't over/underclock or UV
To further update today I have been running a stock 2.3.7 rom made by drew garen that has been running well with no reboots, freezes or anything but again it is stock with the exception of being rooted and 2.3.7 instead 2.3.4 like my stock rom and the only reason I am running it instead of my actual stock one is for google wallet.

Nah, NS4G is running 2.3.7 as it includes the required NFC chip update to run Google wallet.
OK so even with that rom it has been acting stupid though not as bad then I went to my stock rom and again the same thing so I think I am just going to unroot and take it to best buy because I am pretty sure it is not supposed to have this much trouble
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
Well I am completely stock and unrooted now and so far no problems so my question would now be did I just have a bad root or something? Should I retry rooting now that its back to original or should I take it to best buy and try to get them to replace it? I really like playing with rooted phones and trying different roms and stuff but it is kinda impractical when my phone won't handle it...that's why I am wondering if I had done something wrong maybe?
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
I have the NS4G but I've never had those issues on any ROM
Well after being unrooted since yesterday I am now no longer getting any freezes, black screens, or reboots. My question now is, did I possibly do something wrong in the root process that might have caused this problem?

I did just now using different more up to date rooting kit files then the ones I used before. I am going to stick with the stock rom for the rest of the day just rooted and see if the problem happens and then if it doesn't do like this then I may try running a custom rom and if this does not work I will unroot it again and throw the phone against a brick repeatedly so best buy will take the thing back as I tried taking it back today and i couldn't come up with a good enough reason for them too take it back it seems.
OK update time. Running stock rooted after unrooting and rooting (using a different root kit this time) I am having no issues what so ever and I even tried taxing the CPU by running app after app ran some heavy games and things of that nature with no restarts or freezes, however I tried NSCollab for a little while and it did act up though not as bad as before so I have gone back to stock rooted and everything is fine for now. I may try some other rom later but for now I am happy just to be rooted with no issues with the stock rom. I might try a less modded rom like buggles beast or oxygen net go round though other than not having the notification Widgets and reboot/recovery option when pressing the power button stock rooted does everything I want it too.

I think that problem could be kernel. Have you tried any customer kernels? Previously I had freeze issues and this so called 'morning coma', kernel fixed all those problems
while that could be the issue with that rom I think I have discovered my real problem could be something to do with titanium backup, either the program its self or one of my backed up apps. this morning on my stock rom it rebooted twice so I got to thinking and decided to do a wipe but instead of restoring my apps from titanium back up I just used the market website to send all of my apps to my phone and so far that seems to have fixed the issue. the only apps i did not re-install was amazon appstore (and a few games from there) rom manager, and titanium backup so I am assuming my problem is contained in one of those apps if I am no longer having the problem.
With titanium do you you just back up apps and app data? Or system data too?

Hi to all,
I have a ramdom problem with my Nexus S. Sometimes, when I try to make a call, the phone seems to work well but the call fails. The screen remains as if trying to establish the call but this is not done.
I think that the problem is only to make calls but I can receive it without problems.
When the error ocurs, is needed to stop the data conection (eg APNDroid) and then the Nexus works again... till the next error. I have this problem the 30% of the times (more or less).
I asked in spanish forums and a lot of people has the same problem.
Is this a known bug?... and the solution?.
I have the low signal problem too?.
I'm sorry to say that bus this is my 3rd Android phone (the first official google) and is the worst that I never had!!!.
Please, help!!!!

Hi,
Are you stock or rooted?
If rooted, what ROM?
When did the problem start?
When was the last time you updated your PRL or your phone profile?
The more info the better everyone on these forums can help.

Well ID first update profile & PRL. Im not sure which ROM has that option. Some do some don't. Just go to settings/about phone and tap the tab that gives the option.
If not then flash back to ur original ROM if u have it to do the above.
If that doesn't work maybe try to see if its an app that is causing it. Just flash a ROM but do not add anything to it. Make the calls to check it.
I'm on Slimbean and I have no issues if u want to try that ROM.
Good luck

Huh.... I always thought if the phone was rooted and running a custom ROM, you would never get OTA updates. Maybe that's only if you're running a custom Gingerbread ROM.

That's exactly what I was thinking. The OTA is supposed to check for an unrooted/unmodified system before allowing the OTA. Maybe it just fails to install but you still get the notification? If true, that would definitely be annoying. Don't blame people for wanting to disable it.

Hopefully, Someone can let those of us that do not want to update know where this update.apk file is located.. I know I can't seem to find it...
when I loaded up the debloated rooted package courtesy of Danalo I remember deleting remnants of something in root explorer along the lines of "vzwfroyoinstaller.apk" and something else with "vzwupdate(er)" in the name which could be the culprits, sorry I don't remember and when I was on froyo I hadn't received the OTA yet and didn't bother to check then got impatient and flashed the aforementioned rom lol
do a search in root explorer for "update" or "froyo" or even a generic one like "vzw", there's gotta be a suspicious looking updater apk somewhere in there

The new radios contained in this ROM update alone (which dramatically improves data connection stability) is the biggest reason alone to update to Gingerbread.
I used to have data drops and overall data instability like none other on EE4. 2.3.6 gives me the stability that I needed to keep a stable data connection while hopping from tower to tower while driving through my city. EE4? Forget about it, it never could hop from tower to tower without giving some kind of fit about it and that meant that you couldn't stream anything. I'd have to look at my phone every once in awhile just to force my streaming music app to make a reconnection and being that I drive through some cities that have a "no cell phone" law, I was risking a ticket (that and an accident).
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
I haven't gotten a notification yet. Running EP4 debloated.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using xda premium
If you're running anything other than bone-stock (no root, no VooDoo, no de-bloat, etc) EE4, the OTA will not apply.
In many cases, you won't even get the notification on a non-stock ROM, as it requires the InnoPath app to be there.
If you're on a custom ROM, the OTA does manage to get downloaded and you tell it to update, you run the risk of soft-bricking (boot loop) at worst. In the best case, you'll boot to custom recovery and it will ignore the update.
I just got off the phone with verzion to see if there was any way for them to stop the push... Upper Tech Support called Samsung and they said no.. That after 2wks the push should stop.. I am running Gummy Froyo 2.0 with the EP4 radios and we have 4G in my town and its as smooth as a babies ass.. Running Immoseyon's kernel in voodoo.. files are converted to EXT4 and setcpu has me at 1200 mhz 100% stable I don't want to loose what I got.. Everything Icons, Backgrounds, Go Launcher EX are all set up PERFECT So, I guess I am going to have to wait for the push to stop.. There is no "Update.zip" file that I can find through Root Explorer to delete to stop the push..
You can do NAND backup and Titanium Backup (for god's sake), then update. GingerBread is much faster then Froyo.

I am running a stock rooted kernel with stock rom. I keep getting the ota update. I am all backed up and going to try the ota in the am when my battery is fully charged. If not it won't be the first time I used imnuts [HOW-TO]Fix your phone....
YOU MUST be NOT rooted for the OTA to take place or it will break the phone and you'll have to use the "Fix your Phone" thread.
Froyo versus Gingerbread. If you thought your phone was fast with those tweaks on Froyo, just try applying them to Gingerbread. Five times better. Look at it this way... this phone was made for Gingerbread, the hardware, the features, the functionality, all of it was made for Gingerbread. Hell, the front-facing camera was made for Gingerbread. The only reason why we got stuck with Froyo was because they rushed the phone to market and by the time they wanted to launch it a Gingerbread build wasn't ready for it.
I took the ota this morning with stock rooted kernel and worked perfect. I must say trparky was correct about "dramatically improves data connection stability". I am really surprised how much this update helped out my phone.

Things I've learned today that you all may or may not know. If you are having any lag issues with this ics update this worked for me. And you must be rooted. First freeze or remove any unused apps att bloatware etc etc. For a list of the ones its safe to remove or freeze search the dev forum. Since my phone is still under warranty for now I just chose to freeze those apps but if you are out of warranty you may just want to remove them which you can do with titanium backup. Now I don't know why but this second thing really made my phone a lot faster. Install apex launcher like I said I don't know why but it did. So try it it just might work for you. Now if I could just figure out the battery drain issue I would be ok. Any ideas on fixes or tweeks for extending battery life on ics???

better battery stats will help u figure out whats draining your battery. Also, i don't know where this "warranty" idea u have came from, but u voided it the second u flashed that ics leak, which hasn't actually been released yet. Also, if u did use the oneclick ics, i high recommend u flash a different ics custombrom through cwm, stock is too buggy. Superlite 5, team perfection, and ics - the real thing are all good choices
Well from what I was told if it didn't trip the flash counter they could not tell if it had been flashed and the flash counter when I got done with everything flashing the update flashing cwm and rooting when done the flash counter said none. You don't wanna get rid of the stock task manager, if that's what you did. What exactly do you think you just did? You flashed cwm with odin, you flashed a rom, you flashed a kernel, and you flashed a radio. All custom and not official=warranty void. You can get away with this by flashing the sammobile tar and unrooting, but as of now your warranty, well, you don't have one. I would also advise you read more before you go flashing, deleting and freezing anything else. This is how bricks happen.

OK the best advice would be to go back to at&t and have them check the phone with the possibility of getting another one if they can't fix it. Makes no sense rooting the phone when you have issues with it unrooted. Hate to have you root it only to find out that not even a custom rom resolves your issue. At least now your still under warranty if you root you lose your warranty and at&t will blame you for the issue cause you rooted phone.

The rooting process does not affect the phone in such a way that the rebooting will occur. Try wiping the battery contacts or just take it to AT&T for control....if you have a hardware issue, then it won´t be solved by a custom rom...
Still running the stock 4.4.4 Rom that is rooted. I am s-off already. Finally going to pull the trigger and upgrade my firmware tomorrow and switch roms. I am pretty firmly decided on Cleanrom but wondering if there are any perks of one version over the other? Obviously 4.4.4 vs 5.0.1, but meant more day to day usage. Like battery life, usability, etc.

OK, so I went with 4.0 and for the most part it has been flawless. The only issue I am having is occasionally when in hangouts and I try to bring up the keyboard it exits the conversation and goes back to the selection pane. A hot restart fixes it, but was wondering if there was a permanent solution. I had taken the webview update so uninstalled and dirty flashed 4.0 that in case it was the cause.
Sent from my HTC6525LVW using XDA Free mobile app
The webview thing shouldn't be a problem anymore. It's been fixed. As far as cleanrom 3.0 vs 4.0 goes, I'm seriously considering going back to 3.0. Lollipop is a turd in my opinion. I've been on it since before Cleanrom 4 was released. I've run stock lollipop, Cleanrom and Adrenaline. Since I ran stock for a while and it had the same problems, I know it's not due to the roms. My biggest issues with lollipop is the battery use and handoff issues from 3G to 4G and vise versa. I can live with the battery thing but I've about reached the end of my rope with the handoff issues. I'm constantly having to toggle airplane mode to get data to work. It shows it's connected but any app that uses data will complain about no data connection. Yet, messaging continues to work fine. I had this issue every once in a great while on kit kat but the times were few and far between. Like once a week or once in 2 weeks instead of a dozen or more times a day on lollipop. It gets old. Too late for you now though. Run it a while and see what you think. Maybe you won't have that problem or the battery draining issues. Time will tell.

I probably should add that I've never had the keyboard issue. I've seen others that have (not sure if it was on this rom though). Since I don't see it, I would have to assume it's some app or setting or some such thing that I don't have. I'm not using the stock keyboard. I use Swiftkey but I don't know if that would make a difference or not.
Thanks for the reply. Using the stock keyboard so far. Never really liked Swype but might give it another try.
BTW, I thought I had read going back to 3.0 was okay even though it's KitKat. That not the case?

Still running the stock 4.4.4 Rom that is rooted. I am s-off already. Finally going to pull the trigger and upgrade my firmware tomorrow and switch roms. I am pretty firmly decided on Cleanrom but wondering if there are any perks of one version over the other? Obviously 4.4.4 vs 5.0.1, but meant more day to day usage. Like battery life, usability, etc.

I've tried both Cleanrom 3.0 and 4.0 as daily drivers.
Lollipop is not at all battery-friendly.
Have my M8 back on 3.0 setup the way I like and battery life is GREAT again.
I can easily live without "new and improved" thanks to scrosler's great rom work on 3.0....
Be sure to save an xlnt nandroid in case you want to go back to it after trying Lollipop.
I have a nandroid of the stock rooted rom. Can I just restore that and boot it up? Then go back into recovery and flash 3.0? Or do I need to change hboot and run an ruu in order to go back?

You could put in the newest firmware: VZWm8Lfirmware.zip, then put in the newest TWRP for M8, then install Cleanrom 3.
Thanks. I actually updated the firmware, then ran that for a few days. Then took a nandroid, did a factory reset and then installed 4.0. So I should be able to just woke it again and restore?

Yes, that ought to work. After a stop at Play Store to update a bunch of things, it should be what you had before.
Thanks. I thought I had seen somewhere that if you wanted to go back you had to flash the older ruu then go to a rom. Good to know.
Might try a clean flash of 4.0 first and then freeze webview to test. ROM was fine for the first week so not sure if an update caused the issue.

I tried all the lollipop roms and I am back on 4.4.4. I think lollipop roms suffer from the start. The stock software base has been known for overheating and memory leaks. I have seen allot of developers try to just fix the base. Do their best and just find no reason to work on it.
