[Q] Data issues - Samsung Infuse 4G

I purchased my Infuse from Wal-mart and slapped in my sim card from an iPhone. Now I'm having data problems, both wi-fi and cellular, that I didn't have before. For seemingly no reason at all, my phone will not connect to anything on the internet. I'll check my laptop and tablet (Xoom) and they seem to be connecting fine. I have bars on the phone, etc. Sometimes turning off wireless and turning it back on will fix the problem for a while. I'm using a Linksys WRT400N and have confirmed that the firmware is up to date on it, and like I said my other devices are fine. Anyone else having this problem? Also, can't the phone be setup to switch to cellular data if wi-fi isn't working and vice-versa?

Call AT&T from a different they need info from your phone
Big dog Infuse I997 GB KJ2

Do you have a particular reason for saying that? I don't think AT&T is going to troubleshoot my home wireless connection with me.

I think what they meant was iPhone data plan and Android data plans are different. You have to call AT&T to switch the data plans. At least that has always been my experience. When I went from blackberry to Android I had to call to switch the plan.

I thought so too, but I asked when I got the Infuse and the guy said nope and proceeded to pop in my old sim card.
I'm a bit more concerned with my wireless keeps dropping (although cellular does it too). Any known issues with the Infuse radio and wireless N or Linksys routers? Google isn't turning up much for me.

ATT told me it requires a 4g SIM, said it wouldn't work right without it.
Could be BS but mone worked fine day one.

I was told the same thing. they deactivated my old Sim card and dropped in a new one. Bit weird if you ask me but sort of makes sense.
This coming from a guy who's last upgrade was TO a razr.

Question re: Using both Inspire and iPhone 4

I ordered my Inspire off contract but am planning on keeping both my iPhone 4 and Inspire. I see a lot of people talking about having issues with data plans but was wondering if anyone is still using their iPhone data plan on their Inspire? I'd call at&t and simply get on the unlimited data plan but I know if I switch to that off my current iPhone unlimited plan I will get harrassed by at&t when I pop my sim into the iPhone and will get messages saying I'm not on a iPhone plan, etc... I'm assuming it will work as long as I change the APN settings when I get the phone but then run the risk of missing out on their "4G". If anyone is swapping sims out with another phone and can help me out it would be appreciated. Thanks.
I don't know if the 4G will suffer but I had an iPhone 3GS before I bought a Samsung Captivate (Have an Inspire now). As long as I kept the iPhone data plan, I could switch back and forth with no problems.
Wait, doesn't the iPhone 4 use a small sim card? Do you have an adapter for it?

Thanks for the reply, yeah it does use a micro sim but I do have a adapter for it. So you were able to simply put your sim with the iPhone plan into the Inspire and data worked right away with no APN changes? Thanks again.

I had a captivate as well and never had issues switching back and forth. I was just concerned due to a lot of people claiming to have issues with their data and the solution to call at&t to be put on a "4g" plan.
You should have no problems.

No not my Inspire, I put it into my Captivate... but had no issues. I was going to try my father's iPhone 4 so I could give you a definite answer but that' when I realized the small sim in the iPhone 4's and I don't have the adapter for it

I hope not but based on all of the other data issues people were having and at&t telling them they need to be on the "4G" data plan, I think I may not be so lucky. If I have to call at&t every time I want to switch phones just to change data plans it's going to be a pain.
No issues with mine since Saturday. I switched to the Inspire on Saturday and then back to the iPhone all day today while rooting. Now back to the Inspire tonight. All is fine. I also had a Captivate too with no issues.

So just to clarify, as I will be doing this too, you just left your data plan as it was, unlimited for iPhone, and popped in the micro SIM (with adapter), and it was fine? Did you have to change the APN on the Inspire if you didn't get the plan changed? And what do you do about Visual Voicemail, checking your VM from the Inspire? Thanks!

I can't answer the question about the APN yet since I don't have my Inspire yet but with visual voicemail I know you will just have regular voicemail in the Inspire and when you go back to the iPhone it will be VVM. At least that's the way it has been with my Samsung Focus and Captivate with the iPhone. But believe me all of this talk about data plans is making my head spin. One person says this another says that... AT&T reps seem clueless as well. I honestly think 3G and 4G plans (in terms of the plans since they both use the same type of sim card) are the same with AT&T just trying to keep things organized on their end. It would be much simpler to have a smartphone data plan and call it a day. A lot less confusion.

Totally. The only thing I can gather from all the forums is that you don't have to change your plan to a "4G" data plan IF you change the APN...But no one will really say either way.

Yup, so many people are getting way too many different answers from AT&T and it's probably just as easy as keeping your iPhone plan and changing the APN. Like I said, 3G or AT&T's "4G" work off the same sim. Think we will be fine just changing the APN.
Just wanted to add, that I'm doing the same thing - using my iPhone4 sim (with adaptor) in the Inspire 4G. I didn't need to change any APN's, I just put the sim in and it worked.
Also, when I check my account page on AT&T, it shows my current phone as the Inspire 4G, but I'm still listed with the iPhone Data Plan (unlimited).
So far all is fine and I'm getting normal 3G speeds, same as iPhone.
I'm just wondering when ATT flips the switch on 4G on March 1, if my sim & plan will continue to work ok and give me those faster 4G speeds... So much confusion and misinformation going on out there, I'm just going to wait and see.

I'm glad I'm not alone. Have you tried putting the sim back into the iPhone to see if that shows up on your account again? I'm really leaning towards saying it will work fine. I really believe AT&T is feeding everyone a lot of BS. I remember they would tell everyone a iPhone data plan would not work on any other smartphone. Of course we all know that's not the case.
(And I'm not sure if this "4G" data plan would work in the iPhone or not but that's a possibility to switch to unlimited 4G and just use that in the iPhone. Can anyone confirm this?)
I haven't put the sim back in the iPhone yet, but in the past, I've used that same sim in a Galaxy Tab, Galaxy S, Nexus 1 and S phones - and they've all worked fine with my "iPhone data plan". Nothing changed in my account, so I think we're ok...

Avoid buying a data plan on AT&T?

I'm thinking about upgrading to the HTC Inspire. I don't want to get a data plan because I get wifi 90% of the day (at home and on campus).
My dad is the only person in our family plan who has a data plan. Can he use my upgrade to purchase the Inspire for his line and then switch SIM cards with me? Will he still be able to use his own upgrade for himself in the near future?
I read that AT&T can detect which phone people are using by IMEI. However I've used my Nokia E71 for the past year (upgraded online without a data plan, don't know why it didn't force me) and have been using an iPhone 3G (not mine initially) for a couple of months with no data plan and haven't been caught yet.
I've been doing exactly that for years, no problems yet and I hope to do the same thing with Inspire when my upgrade is available next month.
Inspire 4G is AT&T branded phone. They have all the IMEI numbers. E71 unlocked is non branded one so you can go unnoticed w/o a data plan.
Rest assured Inspire will popup as a smart phone and you will be upgraded.
Will we have to go to an AT&T store in person so my dad can use my upgrade or can we do this online somehow?
@metaldood, Sorry, I meant E71x, the AT&T branded version of the E71.
There's always a chance that AT&T will find out and force a data plan on me, but I'll try hide for as long as I can. B)

Must be nice. I installed my sim card, turned on the phone and went to At&t's site to see that it had already updated my phone on there. That of course doesn't mean it was completely updated in their system yet.
I went from an HTC Fuze (AT&T branded) to a Motorola Milestone (Telus), without any problems, and AT&T never noticed... within about 5 minutes of putting my 3G sim into the Inspire 4G, my (3G) data plan was gone from my account... this after it was re-added by the sales rep.
They don't seem to care if you switch one 3G device for another, but they seem to be policing the 4G phones pretty hard.
Note that after a discussion with the sales rep, he was able to re-add my unlimited data plan as a "4G unlimited data plan".
So, if you do nothing and just hook up the Inspire with your existing sim, chances are you'll be exactly where you want to be-- You'll have voice, and no mobile data (wi-fi still works, though).
If you want to use someone else's data plan (and sim), they'll have to get an AT&T rep to change their plan from "3G only" to "4G compatible", which does seem to be backwards compatible... ie, I can use my sim in my old Milestone no problem.

I've noticed this also. I got my inspire on my wife's upgrade and they changed her line to the 4g unlimited. No problems with it on her cappy. Even though the site had changed my phone from a iphone to the inspire right away I still had the iphone unlimited data plan. (I really should've got a screen cap of that). Was interesting seeing the inspire pic and a message saying that I had to have the iphone unlimited plan with my phone.
AT&T will notice and put the data plan on your account. It started sometime in the past year where you couldn't have a smart phone without the data plan. I had a BB curve that I could use without data because I had it before they required data.

If you disabled your data before September 2009 (IIRC) then you're grandfathered into data block. Only the phones purchased/activaed after that date require a mandatory data plan.

3G to 4G issue and ?

History:
Company issued BB Curve 3g
Bought my own Captivate, took SIM from BB and put into Captivate. Voice and DATA work great. Now I have a nice phone that work pays for
Yesterday I bought an Infuse, took 3g SIM from cappy and put in it. Voice calling works NO data though.
Go to AT&T cust center this morning and they replace the sim with a new 4g one. Still NO DATA. Put the new 4g sim in the cap everything works fine - in Infuse only voice but no data which means no email = can't use for work & out a lot of money.
Does anyone know a fix for this or even why it's happening ? Will rooting it fix it ?
Yes, they have to switch you to a 4g plan in the system, your features and cost will still be the same but you will have "4g data plan". I know because I had the same issue. They had to enter my imei number into the system and then make the switch. It works in the captivate because that's a 3g device.
infuse 4g "a lot a screen real estate"
Which means I'm screwed because my IT people would not authorize that to be done as I am only allowed to use a BB or Iphone. Neither do I like. They were quite pissed when I told them I removed the sim from my BB. So no way to use the new Infuse. Not going to make the wife happy considering I shelled out cash for it last night.
Just curious, did you actually check to make sure 'packet data' was enabled in wireless settings under mobile networks?
That's the probable cause, you shouldn't need to change your data plan if coming from a captivate

He needs the 4g plan because when they enter the imei of the infuse, the Rep can't proceed unless they select the appropriate 4g plan, trust me I spent almost 2 hrs on the phone with ATT last week before they finally figured it out. He will still have the same features he has now but they need to select "4g".
infuse 4g "a lot a screen real estate"
Yup, I had the same issue, upgrade from cappy to infuse - DATA not working with the 3G sim. I had to activate the 4G sim came with the phone - NO DATA connectivity until the att technical support had set me up for "4G plan" and IMEI should be set for that. Then got the DATA working like a breeze. All happened in 10 mins.
I've switched back and forth between an iPhone 3g, Samsung Vibrant, Motorola Atrix and the Samsung Infuse with the same sim card and I've never had any of the issues that you all are having.
I get voice, text and data flawlessly with any of the phones, without the need to change my plan. Just because you may be on a 3G plan shouldn't hinder you from being able to use data on your Infuse. Unless you've somehow come across some kind of fluke, I would start looking at something else as the problem rather than what they have your plan designated as.
I concur with everyone above. Same exact plan on the surface, so your IT guys wouldn't even know, but the plan code is different....
You actually have to own or be authorized to make plan modifications in order to even switch the plans. If its through your company, I don't think they would put you on the account as an authorized person to change plans...
BUT you can always try.... sorry....

When they identify your phone as a smartphone, they don't do it through the data you send them, they don't through your imei number which is broadcast to att via your sim. So an app or rom won't do you any good. I can't speak for att, but tmobile has a similar policy with all smartphones requiring data but i have used a Nokia n8 on their network for 2 years without anyone tacking on a data plan.

I'm on at&t prepaid $2/day without data - so far. I bought a data package before they changed their policy to monthly only for smartphones plus data package. I don't talk/text every day, so $2/day seemed worth trying. When they switched policies, I just did not buy a data package and as far as I know, I don't have at&t data access. But I have been able to use my phone for calls. Don't know what will happen when my $100 runs out, but that will probably be several months from now. Meantime I have a mobile hotspot I can use if out and about and think it necessary to check emails.

[Q] Inspire 4G Data Stopped working...

Hey guys, I have an Inspire that I have unlocked, rooted, flashed cm7, and run on Straight Talk (ATT sim) all has been working great. Yesterday I installed Tweaker trying to get 3g instead of H+ (data had been working fine, just not 3g like I wanted). The app disabled wifi and verified internet connection, it was still on H+ but it was working, but some time after that I noticed that my data icon was gone. I was out of range for wifi, I checked the settings and mobile network was checked, I usually leave it unchecked unless I need mobile data. I reset my apns back to default, double checked that they were correct. I popped the sim out and stuck it in a go phone I have lying around and it shows a 3g icon, so I dont think Straight Talk is behind it. I called them and the girl said everything looks like it should be working from her end. I restored the stock rom I had backed up before the cm7 flash, still no data. I did another wipe and reloaded my backup from cm7 (everything worked on that backup), still no data. thinking maybe I fried the radio I updated it and the ril. Still no data. I dont know what to do now, ANY IDEAS?
From what I've heard, straight talk dropped at&t so that could explain your problem
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium
I have heard that since the new phone unlocking law, ATT is not offering any more sim cards for use with straight talk. ST's website does not mention anything about this, or data dropping out or a change to apn settings because of this. When I first put my ST sim in the phone, before I initially updated my apn settings, I still had a 3g icon on the top of the phone. As of now, I have no data icon on the phone, and the 'mobile data' is checked. Like I said, I put the sim in a different phone and the 3g icon shows up, so it is getting connectivity on that phone, but there is no data connectivity on my Inspire 4g. Even with incorrect apn settings, it would still show connectivity, even though it will no authenticate. I am at a total loss here. What could be the problem with this phone?
Drop your losses of having a 45 a month dollar prepaid at&t plan on straight talk and switch to straight talk T-Mobile but I'm sure all you will get is 2g/edge or you could do what I'm doing. Paying 65 a month on at&t go phone plan with unlimited calls, text and 1gb data plan...I have 3g/4g service
Sent from my Desire HD using xda premium
I started off with a tmobile sim from Straight talk, and the coverage SUCKED! And you are right, the data was trash as well. I tried my sim in 2 other phones over the weekend and the 3g icon showed on both. Tried someone else's att sim in my phone and the 3g icon still did not show. For some reason this phone's data modem has taken a dump, I guess, I dont know what the problem is. That's why I came here...
I have no idea what i could be..wish i had the answer for you but i don't...I've personally never heard of that ordeal but sometimes a phones hardware can be faulty after some use...plenty of new phones that come out with hardware problems

Not sure what the problem is, but I just ordered another Inspire off of ebay. Hopefully that will fix this issue for me. I'll post how it goes for me with the new phone.
Good luck, if your having problems with no device.. You know where to come to
Sent from my Desire HD using xda premium
Well I got my new phone in and its the same result, NO DATA. I guess I hit my limit with Straight Talk. I called yesterday and talked to a lady, who said I would have to call her back from a different phone, because we may get disconnected while troubleshooting the phone. I told her I didnt have another phone, and asked if she could just call me back if we got disconnected. She said no, that they cannot do that, so I hung up on her. She called me right back to tell me that we had got disconnected and that I need to call back from a different line, lol. So I hung up on her again. My plan renews the first of every month so I think I'll wait until Monday to see if ST turns the data back on.
I'm running the Att straight talk sim with no problems.... Straight talk is throttling the hell out of people in high populated areas that use over 100mb a day and or over 2gb a month but as far as I know they just cut it to dial up speeds not off completely. They pay for a capped amount of data on the Att network therefor if it's reached Att gives straight talk a call saying ur using more then was paid for resulting in throttling. In my small town in South Dakota we don't have that problem because there only like 3 people here that use the sim card and the purchased data for are area is well over what we use I don't use more then 3gb a month but a friend of mine has been getting away with 10+gb a month. I also have a friend in another state that got throttled and took him around 10 calls to get his sim reset.

Are you using JB or ICS? Changing the rils can break data. Also have you tried updating to another radio?
