Just some things I've noticed..... - Thunderbolt General

Here's some things I've discovered about my phone and thought I would post them in case some one else has the same problems.
I've had my Tbolt for a few months now. For the first month I used the stock rom and it sucked really bad, I hated the phone. It was so laggy, tap on something and wait 2 or 3 seconds for anything to happen. So I went to a GB AOSP rom. Loved it, nice and fast BUT I hate and despise the whole gingerbread keyboard experience. I loved the keyboard on my stock Incredible. I endured for a couple months with the GB keyboard.
In that time my battery started not charging to 100%, it only goes to 89%. Come to find out it is being charged all the way because I checked the voltage with a meter and it reads 4.2 volts after being charged for several hours. No big deal other than an annoyance. I get 6-7 hours of pretty much non stop use with the seidio 3500 mah battery. The other annoying thing is it drops pretty fast and when it get's to 2% it will stay on 2% for 2-3 hours of non stop use before it finally dies.
So I set out to remedy this with every kernel I could finally, several different GB aosp and sense roms, resetting battery stats in CWM, different battery calibration apps and nothing worked. So I gave up on that, after all I was still getting full use of the battery.
Then I noticed not too long after I started using GB AOSP roms that my d/l speed dropped way down. With the stock rom when I first got the phone I would consistently get 15+ mbps speed, awesome. When I went to GB AOSP it dropped to 5 mbps, usually alot less than that, but would occasionaly go up 10 mbps. The internet was slow, youtube vids were grueling to try and watch with the HQ setting on. Took at least 10 seconds before the vid would start and then it would stop and buffer constantly during playback on HQ setting. That really pissed me off so I tried every radio I could find but nothing changed. The only thing I noticed was after a fresh restart the d/l speed would go up to 10 mbps for a few minutes but would quickly drop back to 5 or less, usually around 3. I was pissed because I thought it was Verizon's fault.
So a couple weeks ago I decided screw it, I really hate the GB keyboard so I went back to my stock Froyo rom. It was slow and laggy as usual but I like the keyboard experience better and noticed my freakin d/l speed was back to normal. With Froyo it never drops below 10 mbps and is usually 15+. So I decided to install Lancher Pro and see what happened, I'll be damned if most if not all the lag was gone. Tap on something and bam there it was. I was happy....until my fully charged 3500 mah battery died after only 2-3 hours of use. I was like what the hell??? So I started installing various Froyo sense and de sensed roms in order to keep my froyo keyboard and great d/l speed but see if I could improve battery life. Every Froyo rom I tried would kill the 3500 mah battery in 2-3 hours of non stop use no matter what I did. So I decided to check the voltage on the "dead" battery and it showed 3.9 volts which is NOT dead. 3.6 to 3.7 volts should be dead. So where the GB roms would at least give me full battery use (and cut my internet speed to nothing) the Froyos won't for whatever reason, they just won't read the voltage right. And by the way, no battery app I've ever used will read the right voltage on the phone. It's usually off by .3 or .4 volts. When the battery dies the app says it at like 3.3 to 3.4 but the meter says 3.6 to 3.7 so don't trust those battery apps too much.
Anyway, so I had a dilemma, use a GB rom with full battery life but crappy d/l speed and a keyboard I hated, or use froyo with a keyboard experience I loved with great d/l speed but not full life of my battery. I would go thru 3 3500 mah batteries in one night at work and still have to put it on the charger before the end of the night. 2 were cheap ebay batteries, wouldn't last no time really with Froyo. (and Yes my job has a lot of downtime most nights so I use the hell out of my phone. lol)
So a couple nights ago I decided to try a sense 3.5 rom. Love it!! Love the keyboard experience, my d/l speed is freakin awesome with the 906 radio, and my awesome battery life is back!! And it's pretty fast too, not quite as fast as an AOSP but I can live with it. Videos on youtube with HQ on start within a couple seconds and I have yet to have one stop and buffer. Awesome devs we have here!! I just wish one of them could fix the battery issue so it would actually show 100% charge instead of 89%.
Anyway, just thought I'd share the problems and fixes I've had with this phone over the last few months.

Try wiping battery stats in recovery?

That is interesting. My guess is that your issue has something to do with your hardware because of you getting different voltage readings from a meter vs phone app. At least you have found an acceptable fix to your problem for now.
Have you ever updated your radio software? That may be the answer to your dilemma.

Battery stats for those on custom ROMs

Im trying to convince myself to get the Inspire and sell my atrix.
The last thing that is making me reluctant is the battery. I consitantly get between 30 and 40 hours between charges on my atrix with 3 to 4 hours of screen time. I know i wont get that with an Inspire, but im wondering what kind of stats people are seeing who are running custom ROMs. With my capitvate i saw a nearly DOUBLE battery life effect between stock and a custom rom. im hoping there are similar results on the inspire.
for those on custom roms, im looking to see how many hours you get between charges. ideally, how many hours between charges, with how many hours of screen time, wifi, blue tooth, etc. and im also interested in seeing the battery life of those who are OC/UV.
Someones gotta have info for me!

Inspire battery usage....sucks!
If your main concern is BATTERY USAGE, then DO NOT get an Inspire.
No matter what ROM or other MODS made to an Ispire, it is accepted by all that have one, that the Inspire has very low battery uptime, especially when compared to other platforms.
Stay with your ATRIX for long battery usage and uptime. - Glenn
I just swapped my Atrix for the Inspire this past Sunday, and i can tell you first hand you're not gonna get the same battery results you did with the Atrix. Personally, I don't need to get 20-40 hours of battery life from a phone. Don't get me wrong, it is nice, but I don't need it. I just want to get at least 8 hours (while I'm at work) from a battery and I'm fine. However, I do have my charger with me just in case and i also have a car charger.
I rooted my Inspire Sunday night and flashed the stock rooted rom and couldn't be happier. I got about 13 hours out of the battery yesterday while I was at work and I used it under normal circumstances..calling, texts and lots of fb checking etc. Oh, and I didn't have any overclocking, underclocking, themes or nothing...just the rooted the stock rom.
The inspire is a lot more smooth also when compared to the Atrix. I was all for the Atrix last week. But after actually having the Inspire....its the Inspire FTW!
Its not my main concern. Just the Las thing I'm considering. A lot if other things about the inspire are appealing. Just looking for round about numbers.
Can I get 12 hours out of itwith 2 to 3 hours of screen time? That might be enough for me........If can get more than that, then I would def be sold.
Of course all this would be expected only when all aetttings on phone for Max bat life applied

Speak for yourself. My Inspire lasts me the day with a ton of juice left over. I'm not a super heavy user, but I will have sometimes 60-70% battery life when I go to bed on light use days. On heavier use days I'm still at 30-40% when I go to bed. Unless you are watching youtube videos or something for hours on end, battery life is fine I think.
To extend battery life I adjusted my screen brightness back to 30% with no auto adjust, seemed to help battery life quite a bit and did not make much difference in how the screen looked. Today I am trying auto brightness, but using power saver to switch to lower screen brightness when the battery hits 40%--I'm at 7 hours and the battery is still at 70%. Honestly, I don't think a person could even watch a movie on a flight, for example, the screen draw on the battery is that bad. If I keep the phone, I will have to get another battery.
I get 22-24 hours with light average use, about 14 hours of moderate use. CM7, nothing special done or flashed.

I was replying to the OP's original statment regarding his Atrix battery time in reference to the Insire's battery time:
OP said......The last thing that is making me reluctant is the battery. I consitantly get between 30 and 40 hours between charges on my atrix with 3 to 4 hours of screen time.
Even with your light usage, I am doubtful that you get anywhere close to the OP's "30 and 40 hours between charges on my atrix with 3 to 4 hours of screen time". - Glenn
well i guess i will just find out.
impulse buyer here. immediatly ran out and purchased an inspire after making this thread.
You're going to LOVE the inspire (even with the lower battery time). I have no doubt you will be throwing rocks at ATRIX users in no time!! - Glenn
Lol ur right so far. Smooth, fast, solid. Just the smoothness and screen size is enough to win me over

My results are based on percentage of time versus overall time, based on an average 8h work day.
Stock rom:
at the end of 8h I had an average of 55% left
Revolution HD 4 Beta 2:
at the end of 8h I had an average of 35% left
Stock rom rooted and bloat removed, HSPDA enabled:
only have one data point and it looks good so far. I had 75% left with the same average use as the other roms above. Why this one is so much better I don't know.
Also the stock rom came with the stock Radio 06.04.06_M but with the root downgrade and then custom rom to Rev HD4 B2 I had to upgrade the Radio to one that was suggested, which is 06.03.24_M2.
Also, one thing that I noted which was also seen on my Nexus One is that when I use the GPS my car charger is not able to keep up and I will loose battery % as I drive.
All in all I am very happy with this move from the Captivate. Many see it as a lateral move, but if you ever where in the need for the GPS this is definatey an upgrade since the GPS on the Inspire is spot on.
^^^^^^
thats the kind of info i was looking for. appreciate it.
my first run with the inspire resulted in 14 hours since last charge (down to 15%) with nearly 3 hours of screen on time.
granted i adjusted every possible thing to be less battery consuming, and one hour of that screen time was laying in bed in the dark with the screen on the lowest brightness setting.
i think i may be able to work with this.

yeah i am close to an impulse buy on the inspire too, just because its such a great price. even full price at 399 is insanely cheap when most phones are 550 full price.

the battery does suck. but everything else on the phone is so great, that i still am happy i got it
I am a pretty hardcore user and I never have any issues with battery at all. I believe a lot of these battery issues that people have are due to flashing with a low battery, which causes the battery's "memory" to get messed up. If people flashed with a full battery, or did the battery reset procedure after flashing and charging, we would stop hearing about all the horrible battery issues. User error, not an issue with the phone. If it was a phone issue, I would absolutely be experiencing the problem as well.
There are also bigger, better, higher capacity batteries up to 3500 ma/h if you REALLY need more battery time.

alright so i had a lot of issues with getting great battery life out of the phone. i'm only writing this to help people that are having similar issues. obvious, relative to teh atrix (with a ridiculously larger battery), the life is NOT that great. BUT i've gotten 24+ hours on teh phone with certain tweaks.
first off, rooting is a pain in the ass, but a necessity for any power user. My HSUPA speeds are often higher then the HSDPA speeds...and I can tether too! Anyways most important part of tihs is underclocking. I have my screen set to underclock to 3xx Mhz with screen off. I can't even tell the difference between when it is underclocked or not. I don't OC since for whatever reason I don't see the option to and don't care to force it.
I also set my brightness to 20% or less when i'm indoors, which is usually where i am. I also turn off the radios when i'm not using them, or wifi when i'm in range (i think its better than hspa), and sometimes autosync too (there are widgets for this). i also disabled facebook live feed syncing and set it to update when i open the app, and to sync contacts and htc sync and other useless stuff to once a day.
if you want something to turn off your radios when your screen is off, check otu juice defender. if you want to track your battery over time, try juice plotter. with the way i ahve it setup now, if i leave the screen off for 10 minutes. the battery drops 1% or less PER HOUR. One night, it finished charging at midnight so i took it off, and didn't put it back on a charger 1 am the next night with 10-15% left.
anyways, i hope this helps at least some new inspire owners. good luck with rooting if you haven't yet, it took me 4 hours, but itw as COMPLETELY worth it

Got another data point for the stock rom.
This time after the 8h my battery was at 55%, however I spend considerable time in a clean room were I have no signal at all. My other phones would usually drain much quicker in there and I believe it's because it's seeking a cell signal all the time.
So far I am very happy with the rooted stock rom, only wished it had some of the Gingerbread features.
I have consistently gotten about 9 hours usage, with 1.5 - 2 hours screen time, and left work with 40 - 60% battery. I make no effort to reduce usage, as nothing even comes close to the screens usage, except I do leave off gps when not in use. This is a general average, and I have noticed little difference between stock and 2 different versions of Android revolution, with different flashed radios. (roms always flashed at full battery) and overclocked to 1.2 with ondemand set. Overall I can say this battery is not great, but the rest of the phone is well worth it. I had the atrix for 2 weeks, and although the atrix got better benchmark scores, it was way less smooth, and a lot of market apps don't work on it, like flashlights, live wallpapers that don't support the screen, etc.
I am very glad my atrix's touchscreen failed, because if it didn't, I probably would have never tried the inspire, and I am much happier with the inspire.

So Enclair JF6 has the best battery life!!!

So my friend who bought a captivate at the same time as mine (about 8 months ago) has been using stock rom (JF6) for a while. He basically just makes 10-15 mins call a day, checks weather and livescore sometimes, no background data, and he told me that he got at least 4 days!!! Right after he upgrade to the official Froyo, his battery life drops down, and he said not even lasts a day! I helped him install the Serendipity 6.3, told him to run for several days and recalibrate the battery. He reported back to me that with the same manner of using his phone, set the screen brightness to the lowest, his phone last from 6:00pm to 12:00pm the next day (about 18 hours). I then helped him to come back to JF6 yesterday afternoon and up to noon today, he said the battery doesn't change (means it drops less than 20%).
So does it means that in term of battery life, the JF6 gives us the best? What in Froyo makes it that bad in battery life? I might want to go back to JF6 to test. For now I'm using Phoenix Ultimate and got like 12 hours. Of course I use a lot of google voice, email syncs etc ...
I love Phoenix Ultimate. I made the switch to Phoenix Unleashed though. Much quicker. Man that is a great rom.

I agree with this statement
Hmm... I haven't really noticed a huge difference going from ROM to ROM. But I do know that on Andromeda3 in the 17 hours and 17 minutes since I unplugged my phone last night I've used 22% of my battery; this is with WiFi and the GPS enabled.

same here, I noticed that, I use completely stock eclair and official froyo rom, my cappy never tried to flash any rom, so I can only compare the stock eclair and official froyo's battery performance.
my eclair last for only about 18 to 22hrs, I'm a heavy user, after the froyo update, my battery can last up to max of 12hrs, that sucks!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I am on a custom ROM, and with 2-3 hours calls and 1-2 hour display with 3 accounts pushing in mails, I easily get past 48 hours.
i never found that to be the case. the battery life on eclair was fair but not great for me. i used the phone a bit heavier but found it to be similar to my iphone 3g or slightly less if it was being used most of the day. ok so i could get 4 days on the iphone but i really didn't use that phone much. the cappy even with light use wouldn't go more than 2, it used a bit more on standby than the iphone. every phone is different so i cant say that your friend doesn't get 4 days but in every day use i dont see froyo using much more battery on standby and probably uses less for me during use.
the best battery life on a rom i ever had was jk3 from the i9000m. it was perception something and was very light. the rom was also fast and feature packed. battery life was about 2.5 days on average. the next best was a tie between andromeda and the jh2 leak 2.1 with unhelpfuls kernel 1.4.1 and a lot of undervolting and the gpu underclocked for frequencies up to 600mhz and overclocked for 800-1200. that kernel ran great but was overshadowed by 2.2 with jit. i wish unhelpful would make a 2.2 version because his undervolt never suffered from charge death and the phone would tolerate much lower voltages. plus control over the gpu was a nice feature.
some of the 2.2 roms may eat a lot of power on standby but if the use is that light it should still get a day+ but i feel under use there isn't a difference i can detect consistently.
I don't like to get 4 days by just make phone call, because then why do you need a smart phone? I'm just wondering why that kind of thing happens? What in 2.2 eats battery that 2.1 doesn't? Ok, improvement in performance can shorten battery life, but should not be that whole difference (I mean from 4 days to 1 day)! That guy he even keeps all the crap wares from AT&T and doesn't have any task killer installed!

2.3 battery hungry

So I recently upped the ante and jumped into gingervitis 1.0 vIII.
one thing i realize is that it takes forever to charge, simliar to the first couple of days when I first got the tbolt.
my question is , is it hording battery, or is it not charging it efficiently.
Honestly... I'm not sure what that's about. Mine is charging fine now. I have heard reboot while plugged in helps but I'm not having charge issues so I can't say for sure. As we have seen, each of these phones acts a bit differently.
Try installing one of Ino's latest kernels they seem to be the best for charging problems.
There are several posts in Imoseyon's kernel thread about charging issues. I haven't had any with CM7 but with Sense YMMV.
I've tried both (leaked Sense ROM and CM7) and IMHO they both eat batteries like Cookie Monster eats cookies.
Munch Munch
Well... it's a leak... and AFAIK they don't have source yet which contributes to why they can't tweak it more to be less power hungry.
I'm on Bamf 2.05 and it eats the battery pretty good.. but I like the performance on this ROM so I'm sticking with it for now. I work from home so my phone can stay on the charger untill noon and then I'll take it off and leave it off for the rest of the day and it doesn't bother me. Will be nice when they get a legit update source so they can tweak it for better battery performance.
Try calibrating your battery. It may not last longer, but it wont quickly go from 100 to 80 and then take forever to go from 50 to 40 like it does on stock.
my battery is taking FOREVER to charge, but my battery life is also siginificantly increased. I can have it idle for over a full day now, pretty impressive!

The default kernel that comes with VIII is test1 that has this slow charge issue. I update to test4, which made the charging faster (but still not up to stock speed). You might want to try that.
As far as charge retention goes, I feel it pretty much behaves like a stock rom, except that its MUCH faster, being OC'ed to 1.4G!

[Q] Has anyone noticed battery life took a nosedive with the Gingerbread update?

Having waited months for this update, I was just as excited as many to put this update on. Unfortunately, even though it has fixed many issues it created a new one for me: battery life, surprisingly.
The battery life on my phone is now back to what it was at out of the package with all of the bloat and Froyo. All I did on my Froyo was root it, freeze all of the bloatware, and unroot it. The battery would go the entire day and then some with moderate use. The phone became very stable.
Fastforward to yesterday- the phone rebooted, so I had enough and I put Gingerbread on. Everything was fine yesterday, and battery consumption was great with all the radios on. After I woke up this morning from charging (USB), the phone felt hot. Battery Monitor was saying it was at about 101F (normally around 96F). I unplugged, and immediately the consumption was at about 250mA. Throughout the past few hours, it has gone from 150mA to 600mA consumption. I did a factory reset, and it didn't help. Nothing has worked yet to get the power consumption under control today. The primary things running are (not surprisingly) the bloat. Telenav I noticed was constantly noted as "Restarting". Appmarket gets force-killed, and it opens back up a split second later.
It might possibly be the data radio, as JuiceDefender can't even shut it off.
Has anyone found their battery consumption got worse with the GB update, and not better? Short of flashing a bloat-free rom on it, has anyone found a solution?
When an app constantly closes and goes into a endless restart cycle is what kills the battery the most. It also makes the phone hot. I had this happen with the NFL app a few updates ago.

After I updated yesterday my battery did also die fairly fast. I did a hard reset and now it seems the same as froyo. But I was one the lucky folks with almost no problems so I never rooted. From my understanding gingerbread suppost increases battery life mines about the same now

Guys you have to keep in mind that this is not the official release. LG either leaked this build out by accident or on purpose to quiet down the hungry stomach's that wanted a gingerbread build. Lets just cross our fingers and graciously hope that a more fresh and tasty build will be released.
For now just try and enjoy your phone. If you are having random reboots that are a little too often then try completely wiping your phone and then literally wait 10 minutes for the software to settle down, once settled then reboot and enjoy.

That sounds about right. There has to be a broken sensor or something improperly calibrated. It isn't warm anymore, but it is just gulping down the power right now faster than any device I've ever had. I have a feeling it may have thought it was fully charged. It was perfectly fine on the original charge left over from Froyo consuming only about 30-60mA. Overnight charge on Gingerbread? Getting this massive consumption. It was done on USB. Once it dies in the next few minutes, I'll do a full wall charge and hopefully it gets more than a few minutes.
You guys using the bloated version or the EB release with bloat removed?
My battery life has been fairly good so far.

Have you charged it since you ran the update?
I just plugged my phone in about 30 minutes ago and it went from 20% battery to 80% in 30 minutes. That seems very fast for the G2x. I really think the culprit here is it isn't charging properly. I did a factory reset already, and it didn't help.

One thing I have noticed is my Camera is apparently responsible for about 20-30% of the power consumption even though I've forced quit it and rebooted.
I am going on 14 hours now and am at 64%... light use, wifi on half the time, screen on for little over an hour. I have HORRIBLE reception at my house in ohio, the damn thing is usually just trying to hold 1 or 0 bars where i very frequently have dropped calls or text messages that go out slow or come in in packages because it finally found a signal again (aka my phone loves to spend juice looking for a signal)... I would say its pretty good and i used the hell out of it yesterday and killed it in like 6 hours so this is my second charge...
Luckily I'm in the second Category. I was on ultimate Rom and loved it but I just wanted to change it up so I rolled back to froyo. Then did the update, reflashed clockwork and charged it to 100%, booted into clockwork, deleted the battery stats, boot it up, pulled the charger and I'm on 15 hours now and still have about 20% left. I'd say they did something positive. I still need to freeze the bloat however. I'll worry about that later when we get a CM7 or EB build based on this rom that is stable.
After I turned off GPS on the camera and killed it, my battery life skyrocketed. Even though I was killing the camera, it wasn't helping. I had to actually turn off the GPS before exiting. I'm not sure if its coincidence, but I left it unplugged overnight and it used almost no battery.
Just for a bit of proof.. I took these after the update, in the one with the estimate you can see it only expected me to get 5 more hours of battery life based on the history, but it's going to last a lot longer I think.
All I did was wipe battery stats, charge to 100%, wipe again, waited 30 minutes, wiped one more time then unplugged and let it go. that was 17 hours ago.
I'm anal like that, I really did wipe the battery stats three times and let it charge to full again after wiping just to make sure it was maxed out. I'm a noob still so not sure exactly how the battery stats reporting works.
Oh yeah, this includes 1.5 hours of Order and Chaos. Streaming music from Google music for two hours while driving across town, 45 minutes of GPS while locating a business I've wanted to visit and about 5 chapters of I, Robot in google books.

did gb help battery issue?

For those of you who've installed the GB, has that helped w/ the low battery life?
The battery problem was already fixed in V10k, although my phone has been far less stable with that release.
My fear is that they might reintroduce it in Gingerbread, although it should improve further if they haven't messed something up.
However as official GB is not out yet, what is the point in asking? Even if it WAS fixed in the leaked beta, things could change in the final version.
I expect big things from Gingerbread though, as I was rather disturbed when I bought my mum an Xperia Mini Pro yesterday and its far FAR more responsive than my Optimus 3D is despite half the CPU power.

The battery problem hasn't been fixed. My phone still loses 2 to 3% on wi-fi when i'm not using it and I still also have the problem of how ever long i use the phone for, even if it's just a couple of minutes checking twitter once i've locked the screen and then go back to the phone after a few minutes it's suddenly dropped an extra 3% battery power. This happens every time. Until this is fixed the battery still has a problem.
The battery life is worse than on 10k. Maybe it's because I'm finally able to leave Wifi always on (10k kept rebooting with that option).
And tonight, I filmed in 3D for maybe 40 minutes and it used 80% of the phone's battery. Not great...
I updated mine to gingerbread via kdz and i have to say the battery life is awesome i mean normally i am scared to game and stuff at work. Today i played lots of different games downloaded games. Watched the family guy and the simpsons on my phone converted fruit slice to 3d with the converter and played made at least few hours phone calls sent text. Thats in my nine hour shift i had and when i came home i hoped on the bus and listened to music no problem and still had40 percent battery left.
GB is great though the battery stats is a lil off but other then that i am loving gb at the momen.
Battery is definetaly better in 2.3. After flashing my O3D lasted almost a day (Hotmail with push enabled, 2 Hr surfing with lots of flash, some calls etc.). With 10k 10 hours would be the max before the phone went down with same usage.
Overnight (9 hours) it lost 7% battery with 3G mobile net on, while 10k lost 10-12% in the same scenario.
