What are the best SMS apps, of any variety and quickly why?
such as for backing up sms, using sms in general, etc.
I have heard of handcent and chompSMS so far as two good ones for overall SMS use.
If the app costs $, be sure to say so!
Current Result: GoSMS
Go sms.
Its new and popular.
Really light
Backs up sms
Can turn its whole system off(silent) when i want to use something else.
Yeah I really like GO SMS. you should try them all if you can because each has its strengths but my fave is GO.

I've tried a couple of them myself and I must say GoSMS is the best!
I've tried chompSMS, Handcent, and GO SMS (in that order)...I used each for about 1-2 weeks until they irritated me. I have stuck with GO SMS and I'm not looking back. For backing up sms I only use SMS Backup and Restore.

Thank you so much for the info. SMS Backupa nd Restore is a godsend!
I agree with everyone else, Go is my favorite messaging app if I'm not using the stock app.
I like GoSMS too.. but now that Handcent has emoji support, I'm switching back to HandcentSMS cos' I can send and receive smiley icons to/from my wife (who's using an iPhone).
I think it really depends on your need..
I recommend GO SMS... =)
The only problem is the Go sms icon, its hideous!

I'm also going to go with GO SMS. It has the functionality of pretty much every other popular sms app, and it seems to get an update every week.
I use Go SMS.
And for backup I use both SMS Backup and Restore and SMS Backup+ that lets you archive your SMS in Gmail.
Handcent. Nothing is more customizable. And to me, that's the heart of Android. Also, the devs are great, constantly adding features. Its been very reliable for me. It others online features for back up.

GoSMS.. I've used them all w/ Handcent being the longest but once I tried GoSMS, I haven't wanted to try anything else.

Amen to that. I tried the GO SMS built in backup and it messed up my sms order, missed many others. Good thing I had another backup via Backup and Restore.

If you're using a custom launcher, don't drag and drop to the Home screen. Instead long press on home screen to get the menu, then click shortcut, select application and you can have an option to change icon (by clicking on the icon) during the rename stage before finalizing by clicking done. This was for Launcher Pro BTW. Hope that helps.
I love GoSms
GOsms... lighter/ great sms app alternative.. beenHandcent user before.
My top:
#1 Handcent SMS
#2 Go SMS
The only problem with Go SMS is that it need the standard massaging apk to work. Sounds maybe weird, but why do I need two loading apps (one in background) on incoming sms? This takes memory. Not much, but for me - xperia e10i - it's kinda problem.
Handcent in the other hand use the stock massaging app only in case of mms in/out.
Handcent is slower, thats for sure, maybe not much, but you can tell why using it.
Go SMS got mega support from the devs - very often updates, and thats a great deal.
For now, like at the top of the post - first place Handcent, and second Go SMS - for me ofc
Go over Handcent
I prefer Go having used both.
One issue I have is I so far have been unable to stop the integrated text app from collecting and alerting me about new texts.
Am I being a donkey?

How to disable stock sms?????
I downloaded GO SMS and need to disable my stock somehow so I stop getting double messages. Any tips?
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
Well normally you won't. You CAN go in and disable SMS notifications via the Messaging app directly so you don't get double notifications.
You CAN delete the APK out of system/apps if you have root, but most SMS Apps piggyback off the stock Messaging program so it is ill-advised.
Just disable notification from stock and use GO SMS. Ignore the stock app (or Hide the icon if using Launcher Pro).
Awesome! It worked. Have a good day.

Go SMS doesn't need the default SMS to work. The default SMS can be frozen or deleted or do as you have done.
Need help with my Lenovo S720

Get titanium backup and freeze the SMS app. That's a system app so I think you'll need to be rooted in order to do it but I'm not positive.

ohh, okay. thank you. I guess I'll have to make do with what's here.
Is there a way to change the default app that opens when you swipe the message icon to unlock using sgs2 lockscreen? Instead of opening messages I want to open go SMS. I know I could use widget lockscreen but I'd rather sgs2.

i thought about that too. but i dont think it is possible. i set Handcent to my defaults and it still opens the stock messaging app so i just sticked to it.
I have NEVER tried this but its an idea...
Set as auto for go sms and then delete the messaging.apk from /system/app so it force opens go Sms? Since it would be the only msg app available... Or... It coukd just FC the comand and crash... Lol idk i repeat ive never tried it i do fine with Samsung messaging

You might want to freeze the stock app and set go sms as your default one. I know Handcent has that option and then try it.
If you freeze or delete the stock messging app, you'll probably lose the ability to receive the pictures in mms messages.
I did, but once I unfroze it, mms messages received the pictures again.
I've been trying to make it to the end of warranty without rooting and have found several customizations that dosent require it. I've installed the new CM10 messaging app and I LOVE IT... except for one thing. I keep getting double messages in my inbox. The problem is I can't modify the default messaging app without root and since the CM10 one is meant to be be stock they both keep showing the messages. Is there anyway to disable the stock app?
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda app-developers app
Go to Settings>Apps, find the messaging app you don't want and select it. There should be an option to disable it once it is selected. Choose that and it should be disabled.
Edit: slightly confused as to how you have CM messaging without root..
Hi Guys,
Huaewi's messaging app is really bad and not customizable at all. I look for only 1 feature in a messaging app and I.e. An option to delete sms from the pop up itself. This saves me the trouble of opening the sms manually and lon pressing it to delete.
This exact feature is there in Go SMS pro but it proves to be a battery hog more than often and I tend to delete it every time I install it.
I tried and I couldn't find any other app which gives a pop on the screen and has the option to delete in embedded.
I would really appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction.

This is a rare feature. Even Google Messenger don't have this.

I found evolve sms. It has the option to delete the message from status bar notification similar to gmail. Will use till I find an option in the pop up with some other app.

As adriansticoid it's really rare feature.
Evolve SMS is capable of deleting messages from popup window, but when you're in conversation, you cannot jump back to overview all messages that's really annoy me a lot.
