Android 4.0 "Eye Sore" - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hey there, i have a nexus S 4G, im aware what im trying is a tiny SDK port, however when it comes down to it, ICS is ugly. Just so very ugly. I understand why it would appeal to minimalist perhaps but i mean when it comes down to it the icons have regressed into something that looks vanilla. Who makes a menu dark greyish blue and then has a contacts application with BABY blue and pure white in the background. When i used to click on peoples icons i would get intuitive popup menus leading to a list of contact methods I.E. Phone, SMS, Facebook, Gmail... now i get this light blue pop up with a picture and some low quality icons that look as though they have been made by baboons. ICS in the theme department is no doubt a regression from Gingerbread, then when i go to phone i get a black background..Where is the consistency?....Where is... everything looks bulky, like they made it friendly for the use of 70 year old people with cataracts... on a good note the hardware acceleration is nice, i like how smoothly all the application run..and how the new browsers functions when scroling..actually scrolling in everything is nice now. Again lack of any consistency when in the phone app on the keypad..diagonal 2 tone lines with thin blue text..i look at it and nearly vomit because my eyes cant focus...definet regression. If this is the future of android..i dont want it...Sorry guys, just wanted to speak my mind.
Edit: After using it for about a day, it's grown on me a bit, but it still needs some polishing in the theme department. I mean it's like they could make up there minds of what color trend to stick with. White and baby blue or blue gray with black. Please google, bring back some consistency. Everything else is nice. Digging the new SMS , I imagine it will look good black. can't wait for cyanogen to have a crack at it.

QFT. you're running a buggy SDK port of somehting that hasn't been released yet. and guess what?
that's what CUSTOM LAUNCHERS are for. you don't like something in android, you can CHANGE IT.
I think vanilla ICA is beautiful, but if you don't, well, go buy an HTC phone. or get ADW. i really don't care. stop hatin'. you're the minority.

Wow, you guys, its HIS opinion. If you don't agree with him, its not the end of the world. Honestly, I agree, it isn't very good looking at all. Just my 2 cents...

Agreed. It is his/her opinion and they have the right to it. And I for one agree with it. It is ugly but then I have not seen many stock android themes that weren't. As for being in the minority there I think your wrong. Look at how many custom themes there are for android. Only a small percentage stay on a stock theme.
Either way everyone has the right to what they think and should not and will not be flamed for it.
Nuff said

man, I don't know what you are on....I think the ICS theme is the nicest one so far!! Honestly, none of the stock vanilla android themes are pretty or aesthetically pleasing!! Froyo was just flat-out ass-ugly, imho!! At least they started trying to make it more intuitive and they are adding features that people are asking for....like the data monitor that can be broken down app-by-app....I love that!!! I now have unlimited data with sprint, but when I had at&t I can't count how many times I had screaming matches with customer service about my data usage!!
Like people said above....this is why apps like adw & launcher plus are around....use 'em!! They have hundreds of themes each

hence, why i always advocate, try before you troll

I'm not a fan of most of the changes either. DevBeat has an interview with Matias Duarte, where he discusses his reasoning, but I don't agree with some of it. I don't care that the phone and media apps are dark because they pop, and the Google apps are light to better match the web apps. IMO, they're all phone apps. They're installed on my phone (many of them preinstalled), they should be consistent.
venturebeat. com/2011/10/26/ice-cream-sandwich-design/
Out of boredom (and a most-likely misguided sense that I know better than Google) I started redesigning everything and posting it to my blog. I'd appreciate feedback.
swglickman80.blogspot .com/2011/10/android-40-ice-cream-sandwich.html

Well my initial response was quite negative also, but as you say, as time goes by you get used to it. Overall I believe it is quite an improvement over 2.x, and the dark themes and dark live wallpapers (eg bubbles) will look awesome on amoled screens.

I'm just using adw... I want the samsung S launcher for the backgrounds of the icons...
if adw in future release add this function would be cool (more that is now..)
I love ADW, but I want Samsung S launcher....or ADW with this mod (the icon)
personally i hate ADW i think its performance is subpar. launcher+ is a very very quick home but slightly lacking in features, why dont the XDA community trow together our own G1 optimized home app the way the people want it, Oh and yes we need a port of that Galaxy home.

ADW suffices. Anyone who "hates" ADW or thinks it's "sub-par" is not smart enough to explore all the settings. One checkbox could literally make the biggest difference. It has almost everything the touchwiz offers other than all the icons being iPhone like. With all these phones coming out, ive chosen to look forward, my g1 did me well but i'm actually getting a samsung vibrant because even though all these new things are constantly being ported to our G1's, it doesn't change the fact that the processor and hardware struggle to run it. It seems like an extensive metamorph to ADW would actually get you what you're looking for, so maybe learn how to make themes? Requesting this isn't a quick tedious task, if someone did take this challenge on it would end up being an extensive project before it was 100% stable.

AnderWebs has been really great with taking input from the community and created a respected and very useful launcher.
If you got the skills, by all means, make some competition. If you don't, be grateful for what has been developed in the community ( what was not provided by AOSP)

Oh screw you, i voice my opinion and you basically call me an idiot? typical. this is why i dont come here that often. its performance IS subpar when you look at something like launcher pro, which is lightning fast you wonder why developers arnt spending more time working on getting the core of the application functioning at optimal performance before adding as many features as they can to it. i know every in and out of ADW i am currently running it at the moment, im also running the Galaxy S home app and even that is better than ADW on the G1. Ive been in software development for a number of years and im the kind of person who writes intuitive user interfaces that little pups like you use so dont even consider telling me im "not smart enough" when im coming to the table with experience under my belt. This god complex that people around here seem to have needs to end. Custom rom development is supposed to be fun and a hobby. its totally unimportant in the grander forum of life and you need to remember that. Thank you to the developers who spend their free time making our toys and gizmos more fun to use.

what you COULD temporarily do is turn on all of the screens for ADW Launcher place all of the apps on the homescreen and set the default to the first one? Idk I think it would somewhat match the look but not sure if it would suffice...
Here's some screenshots of what I mean:
Personally I find samsung's custom UI a hindrance to otherwise good hardware, and it's the thing that turns me off to the galaxy line of phones, but to each his own. I believe there are various themes that you can download to change the look of the icons out there and some tweaking plus that should do the trick.
On a sidenote I don't notice any real lag or slowness from ADW. There is sometimes a hickup when closing a big program and going back to the home screen or during an initial wakeup after being asleep for a while or when I'm heavily multitasking while using swap, but that's something I've observed in my g1 since we stopped getting officially supported updates and it happens whether I'm on launcher pro or adw or the stock launcher.

I definitely agree, most home replacements these days run just fine when set up correctly and the Samsung Galaxy S set up requires that many more swipes to get to what I need but this just shows the extent of the customization behind ADW.

LauncherPro, for one, is not "lightning fast", on my G1 anyway. Takes nearly a minute to set each shortcut? With ADW you just click and drop. All of them may have their weaknesses here and there but my ADW is always lightning quick on any 2.1 ROM i use. And typically, people that have been in software development for YEARS and YEARS tend to develop what they want to meet their needs, not take part in a thread asking for someone to take their time and do it. I for one have not been in software development for YEARS and YEARS, so I just appreciate what's given to me. That's all, not flaming. Well kinda.

Anderwebs took the aosp launcher and added the features the peoploe want. Its 100% open source and anybody can send source code pull request (cyanogen does it for example) or ask him for features (he added the real cool features after I forced him to)
Adding different home icons is 5 minute work. You wont eaven need source... Learn to do it yourself!
galaxy s launcher isn't hvga, so it's virtually impossible to port.
The only current samsung phone that IS hvga AND has that launcher is the samsung wave, which isn't even android.
Both the samsung acclaim and the sprint intercept have the stock-ish android launcher... no cool app drawer.
sorry folks.
Actually, is it possible to modify the build.prop on a rom and run at wvga? hm.... ima try.
TouchWiz
Never the mind
Im confused, dont we already have this in the app section ?

Im, referring to the OP.
this thread is kickass!
personally i think that anderwebs (the creator of the Android Open Source Project, AOSP, as well as the ADW module for it) is a pretty cool guy. But this thread is about the Samsung S Launcher.
Well done that it isn't meant for our screens and would be almost impossible for the layman (but not anderwebs because he was co-founder to Android) to port. But OP I don't think this is gonna happen. I know I think the Samsung launcher is one of the ugliest things I've ever seen and I don't think I'm alone as there's very little interest atm.
LauncherPro is a cool guy but the dev doesn't share his work so automagically disregard that thought.
Ander webbs (ADW) is making the new version of his launcher right now. It will support theming and it will include a couple themes (most of the nice ones are going to be donate themes) but im sure a little after he releases it people will come out with some pretty cool themes for it and you might end up liking it better who knows? He said it would be out really soon so maybe tonight idk.

[THEME/MODPACK]1st FROYO THEME WITH VIDEO & PIC

NOTE: i have posted this in themes and here so that those that are/were not aware of how to utilize video on froyo would have better chances of seeing it or those that didnt want to check out froyo for the no vid or buggy cam issue. This is also a tut on how to get it working for you. I think this should be posted in dev and theme since it qualifies as both.

[THEME/MOD]PROTO-G_v.1
I began work on this and it is exclusive to a specific froyo rom atm. I am working on 2more things right now and i need some feedback towards what to add to this setup, and when i get enough changes/added mods and/or edits, i can then release another PUBLIC version in update.zip form. Its not just a skin though, this is what i did so that i could test a froyo rom. So this is the EXACT mod im running right now. I will be editing two more items shortly. I will be optimizing and zipaligning the app and framework folders since i just found a sweet new script.
PROTO_G PICS
instructions: !!NANDROID ALWAYS!!
(only tested on froyo by myself)
1.flash avalaunch or hero over's froyo+sense
2.reboot
3.reboot recovery
4.flash framework zip
5.reboot
6.reboot recovery
7.flash htc zip of your choice(F!n!$h3R,Baked,FROYO 2.2 and stock)
8.reboot,enjoy
DOWNLOADS:
PICK 1 HTC.PROTO_G.ZIP of YOUR choice(will be adding in stock)
(the only difference is the lettering on the mainnav scroller)
DOWNLOAD FROYO 2.2 VERSION
DOWNLOAD F!n!$h3R VERSION
DOWNLOAD BAKED VERSION
NEXT:
DOWNLOAD FRAMEWORK.PROTO_G.zip
THEN:
REBOOT,ENJOY
The reason there are two files rather than just one or added to a rom is because they do not work together and it will not work that way for me. I am working on it. I will update it as soon as i figure it out.
NOW TO ENABLE VIDEO
1.OPEN new qik i installed version 0.04.05
2.select menu/camera/front
3.press red button to capture video

Nice work. Thanks for sharing!
Just a little constructive criticism if I may--- Re-examine the lock screen. The clock/text doesn't fit the "lock bar" and the white text is lost in background.
Great work, BUT I'd reconsider such heavy theme modding, it's a nice ROM, but the look is completely a dealbreaker. That's just me anyway, maybe other people will like it.

This is just how i do it. I know i cannot please everyone, and i do not do this to become known or make $. its a hobby and a learning process. im merely sharing the fruits of my labor/learning, with those that care to give it a shot/appreciate the art. This is also a tut for froyo with video for those that wanted to try froyo but did not because of no camcorder capabilities, and not just a theme but a mod pack that includes many very useful utilities to monitor, maintain and control you system to squeeze the most productivity out of your awesome evo.

froyo with cam and camcorder and they are not buggy. i included a tut on how to set it up. its very simple. its froyo, themed, with cam and vid. cam and vid are achieved thru FRONT cam. im not even sure of the res(idrc what it is, it does what i need it to do, and i NEED a quality cam cus i have an 8mo old to take pics and vid of) for that cam, but the pics and vid are awesome with the tut i included in the op. nandroid and give it a shot. i guarantee you wont be dissapointed that you did.

Gotta say, your themes are like the Type R stickers and autozone stick-on vents of the Android development scene. There's a market segment for them and you put a lot of work into them, sure (and I imagine you get a lot of downloads) but damn if they aren't embarrassing to a large portion of the community. Your skill at theming is impressive but your lack of taste at making something aesthetically pleasing is abhorrent.

Perfectly phrased, thank you. You're editing png files, dude, not engineering kernels. Pray that no real developer ever hacks in support for animated png files, then we'll have the theme equivalent of his signature.
I suppose i can appreciate the time you put into doing all this for some sort of niche market that appears in some places, but i have to say, as a person with a design background and an interest in the subject, your themes are absolutely terrible to look at. They do not flow, they do not look good, they are simply some batman and robin font pack you found online and whatever photoshop filter you happened to click. I guess it's good if your goal is to differentiate yourself from every other theme as much as possible, but i think you went to wrong way down the road. And as said previously, all your work is obnoxious (sig included) and I hate you for assaulting my eyes with what can only be described as melted rainbow vomit with a futuristic font from the past.
Also, what you do does not require skill. You edit image files.
please stop.
This THEME ROCKS! Can you make the font bigger?
Magnus,
On your phone the sig may look fine, but on my monitor, currently set at 1680x1050.
This is what your sig looks like on my screen.
It takes up over half of my screen.
http://www.webpagescreenshot.info/img/659156-7162010113421AM
That is a full page screenshot, as you can see the image is more than half of the screen real estate.

[Q] LOVE the phone, HATE the Sense contacts/dialer

The phone is fast, the screen is beautiful & I know it's capable of so much. So far I'm not thrilled with the Sense UI. My big issue is the contacts & dial screens. Problem is coming from a N1 where I had NO crapware, to this is a bit overwhelming. Really the phone dialer is horrible. I just want to use the stock 2.3.3 dialer I've grown so fond of, easy to use. This one is a nightmare. If I wanted to spell out people's names with a dialpad, I'd still have a flip phone! The contact import was a mess. Never had these issues with stock ROM. I don't want to give up & get the G2X, because I love the phone.
Until they can be rooted, what can I do? Am I the only one who's bothered by this? It's a "phone" & the phone aspect is the worst part of the UI!
Get an third party dialer/contacts app from the market.... search for dialer, you'll get a bunch...

Thanks. I did download 1 but haven't found any yet that I really like. Sometimes less is more.
Do you find much of the font to be too small? I couldn't find any global settings, each app (mail, SMS, etc. ) had to be changed.
Just the font in general on the device? I can see some people saying that considering the display is qHD and there are so many pixels.... but it looks great on my young eyes... if you asked my dad, im sure he' say its too small though, ha.
I used to use Dialer One for a while, I liked it... now im using GoDialer/Contacts, its probably the most popular one out there I believe, supports multiple skins, lots of features... couldnt be more happy.
As for fonts... you need to wait for root so you can either change the screen density or use spare parts.

Thanks, good points. Yes the res is excellent. Go Dialer/Contacts is the one I downloaded, seemed the best. I guess I'm just so used to vanilla coming from an N1 w/ 2.3.4.
I love the Sense dialer above stock because of the smart dial feature, and the stock dialer looks so bland to me..

Verizon and terrible themes?

Is it just Verizon that sees the need to theme their Samsung devices in terrible colors? The Droid Charge poop brown is ugly, especially with the new buttons that don't match. Not to mention TW3.0 just really isn't good looking overall. Now I've just seen a bunch of screenshots of the Stratosphere in the Engadget review, and the theme is a hideous olive/throw up green. Why? I sold a GS4G on T-Mobile the other day, loaded with 2.3 from the factory and it was a perfectly nice gray/blue theme. Why does Verizon have to punish their Samsung/LTE followers?
I would suggest that they devote few resources to theming, and that themes are generally chosen that are usable with decent contrast so that text is readable.
I just flashed the red Charged theme on stock/deodexed EP4D.

The major problem is that most users don't care as much about the theming and rooting as people on forums like this do. Usability is what they are after most of all. The brown works. Whether you like it or not, its bearable. But, if you really hate it: change it.
As another suggestion: There is an awesome Black and Blue theme on here that is amazing, and probably is the closest to the blue and grey theme you mentioned.
CoreDroid and "Black and Blue" are probably the two best third-party themes for the Droid Charge. Both of them are not gaudy, not over the top, etc. They do just enough changes to the interface to make it look good without changing too many things about the UI.
I used CoreDroid for some time and recently switched to "Black and Blue".
I've considered changing to the black and blue theme, I love the screenshots. However while I'm not a total noob, I have no idea how to deodex a rom, or even what that actually does.
I also beg to differ about the brown being easy to read. After the update, if you pull down the notification menu you'll notice that at least text messages are previewed in a nice shade of grey that you can barely read on top of the brown. Literally can barely see it.
I'm glad Verizon tried to change the theme, but really they didn't do any good at all. At least the brown and orange buttons matched the whole rest of the theme and you could read the notifications.

Just back up your phone with CWM 4.0.1.4 or prepare for reloading your phone. I used to be afraid of flashing frequently because I didn't have a quick way to get up and running with the large number of apps. Now I use the batch restore on Titanium Backup. Contacts are backed up on Google.
I would flash a ROM according to the instructions in its Original Post, then just flash a theme. I like Charged (red theme) quite a bit. You should know fairly quickly if it worked properly. Then just sign into Google, restore some apps, and you should good to go.
I've successfully restored from CWM backups, which is definitely nice if you just want to try a ROM or theme out and something gets borked. Its nice as well when you normally change a bunch of stuff with your phone's setup (animations and sound at bootup and shutdown are the first to go on my phone!)
They have poo fetishes. Nuff said.

Well, darker colors use less power so I guess that's a reason for their poor theme choices... but whatever. It never really bothered me as much as it seemed to bother everyone else on these forums.
Honestly, the biggest complaint i hear about this phone nowadays is the color... really? thats what you feel the need to complain about?

It's easily remedied with a theme, but still. The stock colors are pretty unacceptable.
But the poo colors are far from our biggest problems...

I CAN SWITCH TO COMPLAINING ABOUT PEOPLE WHO COMPLAIN
lololol j/k I kid... I do have a few complaints about the Charge but keep them to myself as we don't need more of that here, though I agree with kvswim that most are easily remedied (except for RIL source for CM7/CM9/ICS )

Help making Touchwiz look better?

I'm trying to theme Touchwiz to look more, AOSPish
And would like some assistance, I have no coding skills whatsoever so I'll just be ripping stuff out of the systemUI.apk
I plan on changing those navbar buttons (God they look like crap)
The Quickapps flip button, to look like more minimal, maybe like the green dot Lenovo use to have on their HC tablets
And that blue divider on top of the NavBar (Why did they put that there.
And if anyone knows if its possile to change the panel that slides up, please let me know!
I'll get into it as soon as I get the latest version for the n8013 usa, (few hours)

IT IS TIME WE STOP BUYING INTO APPLE'S ISSUES WITH SAMSUNG & ANDROID. It is the reason Adobe stopped supporting Flash on mobile which we all like. TouchWiz looks a lot better than stock Android with the black app drawer. TW is just adds a transparent affect among other things plus the multitasking. Somebody should be trying to make stock Android and IOS look more polished liked TouchWiz.

That's the one good thing a about all flavours of Android they are highly customizable. As for Apple they make a great product don't get me wrong, but I think the main reason Apple is losing traction is because it treats is users like children, you can only have a cookie is mommy says you can

Actually, I think Apple is losing ground because better technology has been coming out at more and more affordable rates, and Android has been getting better and better each year. I know of a lot of people who went from the old Android (the crap, free ones basically) to Apple because of how ****ty Android used to be, compared to Apple. However, with the better, affordable tech that has been coming out, it's given people a chance to see how good Android is now, so people don't have this "amagawd, I'm computer illiterate so I must use Applez" mindset as much anymore.
Also, I think that Steve Jobs was a really great marketeer. Without him to convince people to love the new products.. I think people just don't feel as excited.

What the hell are you talking about?! I didn't see the OP mention anything about Apple or Samsung. This is a thread about making Touchwiz look more like AOSP. I don't mean to be rude, but if you aren't interested you don't have to read the thread.

I agree with OP I hate the blue divider on the nav bar, In fact, the nav bar seems to cluttered imo. Having the nav bar time out to the dots on every app would be a good work a round. If its a matter of theming im sure it can be done quite easily.
Wow! I thought this thread went completely ignored and got no replies.
So sorry guys, I had very little success and got discouraged.
I didn't know there was actually activity here.
I'm down for giving it another try though. (lol, I replied 5 months later)
@ckavvouras That looks awesome! Can you share how you did that please? Or share your systemui.apk?
@edirector What the deuce are you talking about?
@relldroid Yeah I think the faded 3 dots look so clean! But I just couldn't find the image in the roms I searched in.
Also this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2186102
But for the 10.1 of course
