Manual Recovery - Thunderbolt General

When my phone isn't working right I used to take out the battery and manually boot to recovery ( power and volume down). Every single time I'm in the manual recovery screen I click volume down and all it Does is say install .zip update and everytime I let it do it and it still does that thankfully I always fix it on my computer but sometimes I'm not near my computer and i have a feeling soon something will not be working and I will really need to use my phone and I won't be able to bot into recovery. So does anyone have the same problem and does anyone know how to fix it????????

It's because you left an ruu or radio on the root of the sdcard card. Delete the PG05IMG.zip off it.

What he said. YOu have a PG05.img file on the root of your sd card. It is a good habit to always delete it when you are done that way if something does happen you can get into recovery.

At the very least rename that file or move it out of the root folder.
Also, what do you mean "when my phone isn't working right"? Are you still stock? What Rom, Kernal, etc are you on?
The most obvious solution would be to prevent your phone from messing up in the first place.

Is my Thunderbolt bricked?

Hey, everyone. How's it going? I have been running Gingervitis 1.1 (?) and last night I went to uninstall an app that I had installed from the market. My phone froze up and is worthless at the moment. I can boot up, but I cant do anything. I see my wallpaper and the taskbar (even it is a little off), but that is it. If I hold power and volume down while booting it goes to the menu, but it automatically chooses to update the radio. I can't choose to do anything else. Wtf? Can I fix this?
Also, the phone will ring, but I can't do anything about that either.
I appreciate any help.
Hmm not sure I can be much help but you could try and get into recovery from there, rename a file say maybe a Rom to PG05IMG so when in hboot it tries to load it? hey just trying to help here and not sure it gonna work but could try a couple more ideas until someone smarter pops in. Sure your not bricked though.
If you can get into hboot you're not bricked. It sounds like you have a PG5... file still on your sd card. Take it out of the phone and load into your computer to delete that file. Put the card back in and you should now be able to select recovery in the hboot menu.

last i checked, a brick just sat there. so if your phone does more than set there, no it's not. it can probably be fixed. good luck.
power down your phone, take out your sd card and insert it into a computer. delete the pg#### file from the root of your sdcard. insert card in to phone, power back up.
try taking out your SD card and connecting it to computer, rename the PG05img to something else. then you should be able to hboot and get into recovery
Awesome. I'll go buy a card reader and see what I can do. I will post back in a bit.
Thanks to everyone so far.

After your able to get back into recovery. Try to run logcat from adb and see where it errors out after you reboot. If you can determine the broken app, you can uninstall it from adb. If not just reinstall the Rom from recovery. If all fails wipe and install clean. Good luck

Hopefully he made a recent backup and can just restore that.

Thanks everyone. All is well now. I renamed PG05IMG and went from there as suggested. I went ahead and installed BAMF Sense 3 instead of going back to Gingervitis.
I had not backed up... oops. No worries though, but I will do it now.
Thanks again

One more "Oh noooo... Wait really? WHEW!!!! It's not bricked afterall." save on XDA.
They saved me once too. Glad you're up and running. Patience is key and so many people around here seem to be so quick to send the phone back, blame the developer and post how the rom bricked their phone, then start a thread about "Rumor Verizon is tracing all phones that spontaneously combusted to rooting. Am I getting Busted?"
Again, nice job on the save
Rooted Thunderbolt on BAMF Sense 3.0 RC 4 with MR2 radio and latest dreamKernel.

Whoops. Need help flashing the proper CWM

So. I HAD the proper CWM installed for this device, this was this morning.
Of course though, I always have to mess with stuff and ALWAYS without nandroiding first. Im so dumb!
I was in rom manager and went ahead and flashed the CWM for a xoom . Now when I enter cwm I get errors mounting the external sd . It wont mount even manually do I cant flash anything. Isn't there a way to put the proper cwm into a zip file and flash through cwm using update?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
Ok I have the appropriate version of cwm flashed but I am still unable to mount the external sdcard. Is there anyway to flash roms and kernals from the internal storage?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
first, it's "kernel"
try this

Sorry for the misspelling and thank you for the info. Technically im not bricked though and that's a guide for unbricking. Is there any easier way to get my external card mounted as I don't have a windows computer on hand to manually install the rom?
Or if I could just install a zip from the internal storage.

it's not just for unbricking. basically, it does a very thorough job of restoring your device to the correct configuration. i imagine you flashing the wrong cwm screwed something up. nvflash restores your device more cleanly, so unless your device has hardare issues, it should fix it.
but yes, you do need a pc to do this...

Im already running a modded rom - primordial 3.1, but wanted to flash to prime 1.5 anyway. I hope this solves my problems.
Ill borrow my roommates pc tonight and get it done. Thanks for the help guys.

Just in case anyone stumbles across this in the future, I was able to get it worlkng by formatting my sd card. It was the only thing I could do to get CWM to recognize the card.

phone stuck in hboot

So my phone is in hboot... it's s-off for sure.. I have flashed many roms and whatnot with no issues. So I reboot my phone today, and it boots to hboot screen.
I've tried to get it to go past but nada. It checks for SD card then i can't select recovery or anything..
Also I thought I got an ATT stock img, was just going to try to redo it or whatnot, put that on roo, and it gets stuck parsing..
Any help would be appriciated.
Also... It's almost like the volume down is stuck on, because it seems to function and then won't let me move after it scans for SD IMG.
Did it just reboot into hboot on its own or did you put a pd98img on it and now it is stuck?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium
If you have an image on card do the following. Take out sd. Boot into hboot. Scroll down to recovery but don't press. Put sd back in and then select recovery. If there is a pd98img it won't let you do anything except flash the image. If its corrupt than it won't do anything.
Always remove pd98img from card after using. Hboot menu is inaccessible with a pd98img on sd card.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium
Took SD card out.. Still booting to that hboot ya know with the fastboot, recovery, simlock, ect.
Can't move on the menu once booted.
And it got stuck on htc sense. Basically pulled battery then my phone had a bad day.
Like gizmoe said pd98img file will cause like 90% of boot loop
Or if you have a card reader just use that to delete the pd98 file
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium
So my phone won't boot even with the SD card not in it... and it happened before I put that img on the root.
You've got to have an IMG on there. Find a way to delete it and you'll be good.

Did you try putting card back in before moving through hboot menu? Just leave it out while entering hboot and it will skip the file check and then put sd back in. Then try to make a selection.

yeah ... no dice... ...
Powered up with no SD, then put SD after file skip. Still can't select recovery or reboot or anything. ...
so I signed up for ATT warranty replacement..... hoping they don't notice the s-off lmao!
Why don't you just get a SD reader, delete the IMG and move on? AT&T will notice the S-Off and won't fix it. The Service Center will.

They will definitely notice and will not honor your warranty. Sounds like hboot became corrupt somehow. If you have a card reader you could try using genepooles s-on tool. You might still be able to run a pd98img. That way you will be s-on and can send it in.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium
thanks I'll try it... any of you know a good download for factory img? and If i get that I'll try the s-on.
Go here stock rom
Scroll down to third post for pd98img

so I'm still playing with it... It looks like it gets stuck on parsing, then I can hit down to cancel, but thatssss about it.
so I fixed it... the method for this fix is quite complex but it worked for me.
1. Got an otterbox.
2. Enclosed phone in otterbox.
3. Got really ticked off and threw the phone at the wall.
4. Now it's working .
Really I think the issue was with the volume down key, and me chunking the phone must have rattled something right.. If only I could get duct tape involved somewhere this would truely be a legit fix.
Also thanks the people that replied really did reach out to help.. Cheers mates!
quick reply on this.. so the volume key is still a factor in this thing... Due to this I my phone is booting in a "Safe Mode" so I'm going to see what options I have to put it in an S-ON and install AT&T stock rom,,, doing this I would hope the engineers that diagnose the phones won't see the previous root.
So if anyone has any suggestions while I navigate the boards for a s-on / AT&T stock rom let me know...
Only hiccup I might meet is actually getting the img zip to load to actually flash the device,, I'm thinking the S-ON is the most important thing however.
Here is a link to a pd98img to put on sd card that will do the unroot process. It's your best bet. s on pd98img

[Q] T-Mobile LG G2x crashed, need help

ok, so a few days ago i was flashing the G2x weapon rom onto my rooted G2x, but while i was in the clockwork mod to flash it it froze on me, i left it like that for an hour or so, but it didnt work, so i took the battery out. now whenever i turn it on, it loads the LG screen, then nothing, the screen stays turned on, but its black, ive tried to boot it into recovery mode but that does not work either. What should i do?
Did you do One-Click NVFlash>? if u used Rom Manager you probably fake flashed and thats why its not working for you. You should use NVflash followt he steps and boot up into recover and restore a back up. GOod Luck
thanks ill try that

Making bad decision's one at a time.
so when i get into nvflash it says usb not found,
i did all the steps, and had it all done, but it dosent find my phone
Did u install the drivers correctly? That's probably the problem if it says USB is not found. I believe there is a video about how to install the drivers. Ill look for the video now

This was written for Windows users, I followed this one myself, pretty straight-forward, and "idiot proof". (If anything can be truly idiot proof. Cynical, who, me?)
so, ive flashed my phone through nvflash and i got clockwork mod up and running, but whenever i select the file to flash that is on my SD card, it says no files found. i even tried going to my backup on the clockwork file, and nothing.

Since changing to Nvflash, did you download the rom you want to install and transfer it to the phone from your computer. Using Rom Manager it may not have left a copy on your phone.
If you cant hook up the SD card to the computer, get an external SD card and make sure u've installed clockwordmod with external sd, hook it up to a laptop with an SD card slot, and put it in , then take the mini sd and pop it in your phone, then boot up and that should do it good luck! atleast now your 1 step closer to recovering your phone
Ughh hate,seeing this happen...hope u flashed nV..all the best
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Hope you didn't brick your phone.
No you did not brick your phone. Rom manager downloads the file to sdcard/clockworkmod/downloads. Look there for the file. Only if you download a rom from your browser does it go to externalsdcard/downloads

Post CM10.2 install

Normally when I flash my internal SD card info remains. After going from touchwiz 4.1.2 to CM 10.2 I lost all of that data. When I go to the storage settings it shows an avaiable space that is about what it should be if my data wasnt there, but those usage groupings dont see it.
Is there any chance that it is still there?
Also I seem to have lost CWM again. Am I doing something wrong when I flash that makes it go away?

With a file explorer, look in /data/media for your touchwiz 4.1.2 data then move it to /0/sdcard. Beginning with JB 4.2, Google introduced multi-user support into android so there is a /0 folder designating the primary user and an additional user on the device would be /1. Your internal storage is now /0/sdcard and anything from VRBMF1 4.1.2 is located in /data/media and is unseen by the system.
thank you that worked!

Great! Now, about your CWM question. What is going on? When you flash a custom rom, Cyanogen in this case, later booting into recovery takes you to....what exactly?
