Also, make sure you read http://wiki.xda-developers.com/inde... revolutionary, comparative, numeric results!
I've always said this simple statement about LiIon: Charge early and often.
Do you need to plug the phone in every time you get off a call? No. Do you need to worry about it dropping below 80%? No. Just charge as often as is convenient. Sitting at a desk for a hour working on something? Charge. Driving for more than 15m? Charge.
I think if you obsess too much you might wind up with USB connector problems from all the cycles on the connector itself, but intelligent use of the above statement should get you the most out of your battery.

conditioning the battery the first time you get a new phone also helps, alot of us just charge for a while them use it. all my phones i let them charge for a full 24 hours right after i get them
My battery only last 6 hours
Ugh, why don't people read the article BEFORE they comment?

Some articles say that one battery life cycle is used up everytime when a full charge is done. Other articles say that one battery life cycle is used each the battery is connected to the charger.
I have not seen one article that shows the truth with facts.

No offence but I always found this to be stupid reasoning.
What if you leave home with a quarter full battery and you get caught in the middle of a natural disaster (earthquake as an extreme example) and need to keep in contact with rescuers after being stuck in a building for 2 days?
Personally, I always charge my phone/laptop whenever convenient.

The only problem that your battery lasts only for 6 hours is due to too much charging...So when you will buy a new battery then make sure that only charge your battery when it will remain only 10%...And try to charge your battery with phone switched off..
Charge little and often, try to avoid deep discharge/charge cycles.
Back in the days of NiCd batteries there was the posibility of memory effect where if you didn't do a discharge/charge the battery wouldn't hold as much charge.
NiMH batteries do not suffer this, but discharge/charge cycles were required because when they started being used very few people had smart chargers so had to discharge to be able to time when to stop without overcharging, and also due to confused information pulled over from NiCds.
Top up charges are better for them too.
Lithium batteries also don't have memory effect, and are better off with top up charges.
Ask yourself this:
What would stress the battery more; running 1A through it for 10 minutes or 1 hour?
Also, as the battery discharges, its voltage drops so the current drain has to increase to compensate, discharging the battery even quicker (remember how capacity graphs drop off quickly?)
Say your phone needs 2W to run, with a 4v battery that's a drain of 500mA (P=VI)
When the battery has dropped to 3.5v then to produce 2W it takes approx 571mA.
batt problem
how to keep my batt good?
I've always just charged my phones overnight while I sleep. Never seen ill effects. If I don't make it home that night my phone still lasts through the next day.
It's not like that battery is irreplaceable. Go get a new one if your battery is nearing the end of it's life. By then you would have probably moved on to a new phone.

as others allready mentioned, there are many different suggestions how to take care of the battery. I usualy reload the baterry only if the capacity is <= 5%, without unpluging it before it reaches 100%.

My Droid 2 global's battery life is not good, nearly 1 day for each full charge(i used room fission 2.4.3)Is there any way to improve the battery life
If you're getting a whole day out of one charge that's outstanding battery life.

Too sad to hear that exacly i used about 20 hours. How about you?i heard that if use CDMA the battery life will better?
I've heard something of the like, but nothing conclusively. I've heard that underclocking the cpu can help (if you want to root your phone). So can using a rom like Fission, which doesn't have the stock Blur that, although somewhat nice, is a big drain on batteries. This would naturally be a pretty big change though. You can also get the extended battery for <$50 which I heard helps a bunch.

Yep,underclocking the cpu and use room Fission make the battery maintain more longer(i'm using gsm not cdma). In my country (VietNam) someone sells Droid's battery for only 10$,i'm thinking to get one
Just got my D2G, I put it on CDMA only and the battery still sucks. It went from 80% to 40% overnight and it was set for night time battery save mode.

Wow that's strange, I left my phone overnight not charging because it hit 100% before I went to bed, and 10 hrs later it was still at 90%, sitting idle my phone uses nearly no power. However I never used the battery save mode and I only just recently put it in only CDMA mode just to see if that makes life any better.
I've found that the biggest drain on the battery is having mobile data switched on in an area where the phone can't keep a clear lock on 3G and is constantly switching between 1x and 3G.
After switching to Fission, underclocking, keeping gps and wifi off unless I'm using them, turning the brightness down to 10% except when outside in the sun, and managing apps that sync background data, I can use the phone pretty heavily and get a full day (15-18 hours) out of my battery. Considering I put it in the media dock for use as my alarm clock every night, that amount of battery life is perfectly fine.
BTW, I use SetCPU for underclocking. I set the max speed to 1GHz with On Demand scaling. I also have profiles to scale down the speed to 600MHz when the battery gets low or when the screen is off (which helps with the background data stuff). At 600MHz it's still faster than my original Droid, thanks to the doubling of memory in the D2G.
So far Today after 5 hours of moderate use I went from 100 At 50 on the battery. Is this normal?
Update:
Phone on for 7 hours and the battery is down to 30%, something must be wrong, right?

zse45tgb,
Does SetCPU only require root and SU?? BTW I used SetCPU on my Eris and it was a lifesaver.
Haven't gone the Fission route just yet but loved ROMs on my Eris, such a battery saver. Really hope the dev's can make it happen.
Don't mean to sound like a twit here, but I used to have a huge problem with the battery life... when I was dicking around with it for hours at a time. Try only using it when you need to. Don't sit on facebook/maps/using it for pointless things for extended periods of time. I have found that just using it moderately has had the most dramatic impact on battery life. I can maintain complete functionality of my phone when I need it, and still have at least 50% battery by midnight. If you are using it that heavily, then maybe you should carry a charger around with you? Hope this helps.
Idk how you guys get such terrible batt life. i have mine OVERclocked to 1.35 ghz. i also have profiles to lower that as the batt goes down. I have everything that updates set to update every 30 mins, which is quite frequent. i dont mess with screen brightness, i let it auto adjust. I play games on occasion (SNESoid), facebook frequently, alot of texting and my battery lasts 18-20 hours every day, consistently. When you first got the phone you let it charge for 8 hours right away right? if not...theres your problem, and your battery will probably self destruct in a few months...give or take a few months lol.
Use The Following Settings to Help Maxmize Your Battery Life
I've been using the following settings on the Fission 2.4.3 Rom and I've noticed my battery life has increased at least 6-8 hours longer. I was considering returning my D2G before, but now it is definitely manageable.
Installing the SIM Card HotFix using the Fission Rom Manager
Adjusting my mobile networks to "CDMA / EvDo auto" in "Settings" -> "Wireless Networks" -> "Mobile Networks" -> "Network Mode"
Underclocking my CPU to 1Ghz using SetCpu
If you really want to save some more power combine these settings with Juice Defender. I've noticed a bit of lag here and there while using it, but that's the trade off for longer battery life.
I can confirm zse45tgb post about losing a lot of battery in an areas with poor 3g reception. When I'm at work my battery will drop much faster then when I'm at home where my 3g reception is great.
Props to AngDroid and the rest of Team Defuse.
Hope this helps someone else out there begin to enjoy their D2G.

these are li polymer batterys...not nicad. lol. so they dont need "warming" up the first time... the first charge is the same as the rest. it should be charged in around 90mins tops. a li-pol battery isnt able to accept a trickle charge (would damage it) so leaving it on past 100% is uneccessary and potentially damaging. i wouldnt recommend ever leaving your battery on for 8hrs. as soon as its charged unplug it. if you leave it connected then the charger will switch off, you will then be using the battery, the battery will eventually drop to 90% and then the charger will turn back on. youll be continuously topping the battery from 90 up to 100 and back again. a waste of electricity and im sure it wont do the battery or charger any good.
theres also no need to fully discharge the battery.
a quote from http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_lithium_ion_batteries
"Preparing new lithium-ion for use
Unlike nickel and lead-based batteries, a new lithium-ion pack does not need cycling through charging and discharging. Priming will make little difference because the maximum capacity of lithium-ion is available right from the beginning. Neither does a full discharge improve the capacity of a faded pack. However, a full discharge/charge will reset the digital circuit of a 'smart' battery to improve the state-of-charge estimation"

I purchased the BP7X extended battery from a local Verizon store for $37 with corporate discount. It makes a HUGE difference. With corporate e-mail, two POP accounts at 30-minute intervals, and about 2 hours of music playing, I had 40% left after 12 hours yesterday. I know some people want to see more than that left, but coming from a number of -gasp- Windows Mobile devices, this is pretty much what I'm used to.
T BP7X is 1820/1860mAh, vs. the stock BP6X at 1390/1420mAh. I've seen other batteries listed with as much as 3500mAh. I would think such a battery would get one throught the day with very heavy usage, but I don't want to think how large that battery door would have to be!
The first post at this link shows a comparion of a D2 with the normal battery door and the Moto/VZW extended door. As somebody posted somewhere, the extended door actually makes the device "feel" better in the hand.

my last g2x battery lasted like 4 hrs on a full charge what is the best way to charge the new one? do i let the battery run out then charge it?
When you first get a phone, you should let the battery die before charing it. Then charge it completely after it dies, this will maximize your battery life. If you charge it right out the box, you're actually reducing the amount of juice the battery can hold.

That's not really accurate. Lithium Ion batteries have no memory effect like older batteries so charging them from halfway full does not reduce the maximum capacity.
What happens is the phone needs to learn to measure the amount of mAh from the phone and recognize what battery % that means. By taking the phone through the full discharging and charging cycle, the battery drivers pick up on this and will better report the battery level. With a poorly calibrated battery, you do not get less battery, but instead you just will not see accurate information about the charge level. For example, my first discharge went quickly to about 10%, and even quickly below 5%, but stayed on for hours between 5% to eventually shutting off.
The battery still will not die faster, but my phone thought it was much lower than it was, giving it the appearance of dying faster. Point is, you can do the charge/discharge cycle whenever, not just the first time, and it won't effect your long term battery health.
1) do factory reset
2) drain completely
3) charge completely
thanks!
thanks everyone for your advice!
I think it really depends on who you ask. lol Some people will say let it drain first then charge it fully. I have read info on battery maker sites that suggest when you get their battery that you let it charge fully for at least 8 hours, then let it discharge fully. They say to do this the first 5 charges to increase battery life.
When I get a new phone or battery that's what I do. as soon as I get it I charge it up overnight, then let it discharge completely for the first 5 charges. I can only speak by my experience and my experience tells me it makes a difference. Here is my reasoning: me and my ex gf went one day to get new phones. We got the same phone. She started using hers as soon as we left the store. I waited. I charged it up overnight fully and did the conditioning procedure. Our phones were pretty much mirrors of each other app and software wise. Her battery would die out a couple of hours before mine. Battery usage also didnt report any HUGE differences in consumption .
Also every once and a while I go into Clockwork recovery and wipe battery stats(after it's been fully discharged) and re do the conditioning process. It might just be a mental thing, but for me this seems to work
supposedly from htc.....
1) Turn your device ON and Charge the device for 8 hours or more 2) Unplug the device and Turn the phone OFF and charge for 1 hour 3) Unplug the device Turn ON wait 2 minutes and Turn OFF and charge for another hour Your battery life should almost double, we have tested this on our devices and other agents have seen a major difference as well
I heard/read somewhere that you should never let a lithium ion battery fully discharge. It supposedly shortens its lifespan every time you fully discharge it. Instead, you are suppose to just top it off and not let it remain on the charger, for extended periods of time, once its reached a full charge. YMMV

This is "more" true for everyday normal usage. Yes, you shouldn't constantly fully charge and fully discharge every time you use your phone. But for battery calibration it is necessary/beneficial.
I also hard that during the first charge after turning the phone off you have to strange on your head for ten minutes, then only use your left hand for the rest of the day and you will double your battery life

Hi everyone,
I've had my Sensation for about 14 months now and for the past month I've been having battery issues. Primarily, it's very quick to lose charge and will lose charge even while charging from the wall. First I bought a replacement battery but was still having the same issues. I've started using Better Battery Stats and Battery Monitor Widget but I don't have anything out of the ordinary running. In fact, not a lot is running at all. BMW has allowed me to see how the charging is going though which has been nice. During this period I have used Elegancia, Bruce's CM10, and am currently on ParanoidAndroid. All experienced the same issues.
Last night, for example, I put the phone on the charger at 16 percent. It charged up to 22 and then started the downward slide to death and I ended up waking up 35 minutes late.
Where do I go from here so I don't have to constantly be paranoid about my battery levels?
Sounds like you might need another battery. In better battery starts did you notice any unusual wake locks? This could drain a battery. But since it looses charge even when charging I'd think it was the battery. I personally was experiencing some battery issues myself finally I broke down and got a mugen 3800mah battery from mugen. It was expensive but really worth it for Me.with really heavy and constant use I get 20 hours out of my battery, with normal use I get two days. I'm also running paranoid Android rom. For me the big battery solved my issues. Only one draw back, it does make your phone thicker. New back included with battery. This didn't bother me much because of the excellent battery life I receive. Now I finally don't. Worry about battery. However it's expensive at about 95 dollars. But I was so fed up with poor battery life it was worth it for me. You have to be careful when buying inexpensive batteries because there are a lot of fakes going around. And the mah is not really what it says it is on the packages. You can test the battery and make sure it is what it's advertised to be. If you don't want to go with that large of a battery you can also try anker extended battery. It's a lot less expensive and is a good battery. I personally needed more juice so I went with the big battery. I know you said you replaced the battery but sometimes the bargain batteries go bad quickly. It makes me suspicious of the battery because it's even dropping while charging. This is strange. If you ruled out any apps or wake locks that might be draining the battery I would buy a good reliable battery. The draining while charging is a red flag. I'd say the battery is going bad. I don't at all regret my purchase of the big battery. It for me, solved my issues. I do Hope this helps and I wish you the best. Hopefully you will get your issue resolved soon.

its either an issue with the battery or the battery reporting.
Only thing you can really try is to charge it up to 100%, wipe battery stats in recovery, then let it empty totally and charge it up again, see how its behaving. There is a chance that its the reporting that is off.
otherwise this looks like the battery is on its way out im afraid

Argh. I hope it's not the replacement battery too. I got a replacement HTC battery. The problem I'm having getting anything useful from Better Battery Stats is that rarely am I off the charger. In the settings it says I can log while charging but it may mess up the stats so I've shied away from doing that. I'm not against getting a bigger, better battery but I would hate to do that and have it actually be something else hardware-wise where I would need to get rid of my phone.

I'll give this a try if I can get it back up to 100%. Is the reporting in Recovery always correct? The battery never has issues charging while it's in Recovery mode. If that's the case then I'll charge it to 100% in recovery and then wipe and start fresh.
Thanks
I don't think it's the battery. This phones have errors in battery readings. I feel your pain man. Mine is from T-Mobile (Sensation 4G) and it discharges if I use it even at lowest brightness when it's charging too.
If I reboot, I get the battery boost. I have tried EVERYTHING I read here and nothing worked. I even have 4 batteries. All of them in good condition.
I even tried three times discharging it fully and without turning it on, charge it in the night and when I wake up 7-8 hours later, it's still charging. I tried wiping stats, changing ROMs, changing the usb cable and the charger. Everything... I believe it's a hardware issue. (Thank HTC for that) I'm not buying another HTC when I have to upgrade.

Interesting...so if you were to charge the phone in recoery how long do you think it would take to get to 100%?
I would definitely do what you said, charge in recovery then wipe battery stats and go from there.
If you're interested in having something to compare to, it takes my phone about 3 hours to charge to 100% (by the way I'm using an Anker extended capacity battery), with a peak current usually around 800 - 900 mA. Fully charged I have somewhere around 4100 mV. If you haven't already, I'd suggest adding a Battery Monitor widget with mA, mV, and % available being displayed and it will be pretty easy to get an idea what's going on.

I'm leaning towards hardware issue too. That's why I figured I'd post and see if there was anything else that I can try. It's also why I don't really want to buy an expensive battery since who knows what it'll fit next. I know what you mean about the reboot battery boost. You can almost gamble and bet on percentages when you reboot. I've seen 50% swings before.

In recovery I would guess that it wont take very long to charge to full. I have battery monitor widget installed and while plugged into the wall with my 1.0A charger, it will typically pull 100-200mA but sometimes it'll spike to 700-900mA. No rhyme or reason. When idling and functioning properly, without a charger plugged in it drops 9-100mA. Sometimes though while charging it'll sit at negative 100-200mA.
HA! Just rebooted my phone and it went from 68% to 100%. So I rebooted into recovery, it also said full so I wiped stats.

I normally get 2 to 3 mA drain with the phone sleeping. When charging you may not necessarily get close to the 1 A current delivery of the charger straight away, typically it will ramp up over time and reach peak charge current as it gets closer to 100%. Once at 100% it wants to just "trickle" charge to maintain 100% charge until the charger is disconnected, so any wakelocks etc. that cause a current drain during that "trickle" charging will actually decrease battery charge until the charger ramps up to compensate for the drain. Random spikes in charging current would suggest a hardware problem where the electronics are struggling to properly govern the charging process, as would a large negative current drain with the charger plugged in. Silly question but what's the actual plug connection to your phone like? Nice and solid, pins all OK?
Is it better for your battery's health for the battery to be kept topped off or is it better to let in drain to 15% or so before your charge fully??
Thanks
Use it but don't drain completely is the advice for modern battery's .

I've always been curious about this to, From what I gather, like jje said just don't let it go too far down. I have read also that if you aren't going to use it for a prolonged period, don't leave it at 100 percent. Not sure I believe it, but I guess it has something to do with heat build up when it's maxed out on the charge. I use mine almost daily so I try to run it to about 20 percent and charge completely. Have had it since launch, 6 months now and have had no drop off in battery performance.

It's all about how the lithium works. It's very different than a NiMH or NiCD battery. Never let a Lithium battery stay at less than 5% for long or you may never be able to charge it again. Letting it stay at 100% for a long period of inactivity isn't really a bad thing because it will actually drain itself. A lithium battery uses a microprocessor to keep track of its cell life and charging levels, so that is always running and using a bit of its juice. The best practice for a lithium battery is to just keep it charged and keep using it. Letting it sit idle for like a month or two is not very good on the kind that are in cell phones and tablets.
