CWM install - Captivate General

Do I have to install CWM if its already embedded in the kernel...the problem I have is when I tried I don't get the att captivate option just the i-9000...which is odd since I'm not running anything based on that.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using xda premium

If CWM is already in the kernel, you shouldn't have to install it. As far as seeing i9000, where are you seeing that?

Are you using ROM Manager?

I was using rom manager....but everytime I wanted to do anything it wanted to flash the recovery..and the device option window would pop up and only provide i9000
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using xda premium

1. If the CWM is integrated with Kernel, you dont need to install it.
2. DO NOT use ROM Manager with such kernels. If you need to flash anything, place zip on your sdcard, reboot in recovery (use extended power menu, or adb or 3 button combo) and install zip from CWM recovery.

Thanks I stopped using rom manager awhile ago....my preferred install method is either Odin or in recovery. I was just curious why CWM gave me that option
SGH-I897
2.3.5
I897UCKJ3
SAMURAI KERNEL
ILLUMINANCE 1.1
TEGRAK UOC 1.3

I ran into a very similiar problem. Now I stick with just copying over a zip and using recovery for pretty much everything - especially ROM updates!

Dumb question for ya

Can someone tell me what cwm stands for. I would like to install the updated infused rom over my 1.5 version but for what I've read they said not to use rom manager but to do it in cwm

Clockwork mod. They're the devs of rom manager.
So your statement makes no sense to not use ROM Manager but to use CWM...

Rom manager uses green cwm more for non voodoo Roms. Red cwm is more geared toward voodoo enabled roms

If you want to know how to get into red cwm, simply hold the power button and press on "Recovery" or manually do it by fully powering down ur phone. And then hold both volume buttons down and hold the power button. When the samsung logo appears, let go of the power button and itll boot into red cwm.

CWM installed via ROM Manager is the same as any other CWM for our phone. CWM means ClockWorkMod Recovery.
However, for whatever reason, when accessing CWM by using "Recovery" from the poweroff menu (only on custom ROMs, not stock to my knowledge) and via the trick mentioned above (Although I think it's either VolUp or VolDown only when powering up - both leads you to bootloader mode, aka Odin downloader mode), the text of CWM is red. AKA "red CWM".
When you enter Recovery via ROM Manager, you get Green CWM (all text is green) - Don't know what the difference is or why there is one.
Rule of thumb. If you are on stock, you may flash any rom from Green cwm and via rom manager.
If you are on any Voodoo enabled rom with lagfix (which all of these custom roms are), DO NOT EVER use Rom manager to flash anything. It flashes from green cwm, and you will brick.
Manually copy the ROM to your SD card and boot into red CWM, and flash from there.

Well not that I really know what I'm doing but, I just open rom manager and down load the rom and follow the prompts. I flashed 3 infused roms this way. currently on 1.5.2 never really payed attention to the color of the text. Am I doing it wrong? Lol

if this hasnt been properly cleared up clockworkmod developed cloclworkmod recovery and rom manager. cwm recovery can be used independant of rom manager. rom manager is just an app to access the features of cwm recovery when the phone is booted. but using any of those features will cause the phone to reboot into cwm recovery to complete the action. rom manager also has an interface to download roms and make unique names for your backups.
there are many versions of cwm recovery. some use edify scripting, some use amend scripting. there the infuse uses the same versions of cwm recovery as the i9000. but there is also red cwm recovery which is modded with controls for voodoo lagfix and is integrated into voodoo enabled kernels. if you have a voodoo kenrel installed you have red cwm and should be able to get to it from rom manager, but it may try to launch the update.zip instead.
rom manager is not needed, it is totally optional. having rom manager doesnt automatically give you green cwm recovery. you still need to flash it. (unless you have a voodoo kernel)

[Q] Accessing CWM through RM. Differences?

I wanted to know if there was any difference between accessing CWM via holding down the SGS4G buttons during boot and opening Rom Manager and telling it to boot into CWM.
Thanks,
Jeremy
The CWM version from ROM manager is broken for our phones. If you're on Froyo I recommend you uninstall it and then install the Bali 3.3 kernel so you can get a working version with voodoo etc.
If you want to be able to reboot into recovery, you can download the quickboot app which will let you do it without the 3 button combo.
OK. The CWM I used is one I downloaded from an xda article. I had to manually copy it to /system/bin.
The version is 3.2.0.0
If use that to flash will I be OK?
Thanks,
Jeremy
EDIT: never mind... I uninstalled Rom Manager and rebooted the phone to recovery using the quick boot app, then when I went to reinstall packages, I got into the version of CWM that everyone is referring to (3.0.2.8).
Thanks,
Jeremy
Good...yea dont use ROM manager it just causes a lot of problems

[Q] Flashing CWM onto rooted SGS 4G

Hey. So I rooted my T-Mobile SGS 4G (stock 2.2 firmware) with SuperOneClick. That was super easy, I tested it out with a few utilities and I definitely have root.
So I went into rom manager and pushed the button to flash clockwork mod. It asked me for superuser status, said it was successful, but then it boots into the stock samsung recovery. I've tried this several times and I always have the same result. I'm sorry if there's an answer on this already but I'll be damned if I could figure out how to search for it without coming up with a bunch of unrelated problems.
Thanks!
Try going into clockwork and choosing boot to recovery then after that if it goes into stock recovery choose reinstall packages sometimes you have to choose reinstall twice. That's how I got mine into cwm first time
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
Oh no that's the problem, I can't get clockwork to boot. No matter how many times I install it using the installer inside rom manager, the stock recovery boots up.
ROM MANAGER DOES NOT WORK. USE KRYLONS CWM FINAL IN THE DEV SECTION.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
Yea I no, but wen u boot into it you get the stock 3e recovery and there is an option to reinstall packages
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
You need to download krylons modified recovery.bin file and use a file explorer app to push the file to system/bin. You need to also have the file update.zip on the root of your SD card. Then you boot into stock recovery and choose reinstall packages. This will boot you into cwm.

[Q] Thought I Rooted My Infuse...

Just received my Infuse 4G and I think I rooted it, but I can't bring up the regular recovery menu (install zip from SD card, etc.). I have Superuser and ROM Manager, but when I reboot into recovery, the standard menu does not show up but another one with totally different choices. By the way, when I installed CWM it didn't have the Infuse as a choice for devices. Did I skip a step in the rooting process?
Choose i9000 in Clockwork.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
That did not work.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
It makes an update zip.... You take it and put it in the sd root after you rename it update.zip. Then you have to have a modded 3e recovery file that you replace the original with in system/bin/. Then go into recovery, reinstall packages. Bam, clockwork.

Or Odin/Heimdall a custom kernel in download mode - don't even need root for that.
And don't use ROM Manager - it just causes problems on our devices since it insists on using a crippled recovery that isn't compatible with Voodoo Lagfix.

Thanks for your response. I am a rookie in this mather. I tried with a ROM MANAGER but the app, I feel only handling CWR ROM's???.
It's ask about permissions a I applied. Later I open the recovery (up/down volume, power & home bottons), but I didn't see any different options than wipe,s update boot and locate room from the sd. My Zip handler in free fkrom the market.
I am still confuse with the message.

Hi friend...time with no contact..jaja. I need a new help from you. I read in others forums that the problem with the AT&T SG2 to install other ROMS or Kernel is based in the 3rd edition of the Recovery System which not permit to open zip files without verification of the signature.
They recomend to downgrade to a second edition trough a personalize kernel and install with ODIN. This kernel has to locate in XDA forum as a zip file like CF-Root-XXX bla-bla...to install later. I checked and is confused due to a several options. that the point of the help I need from you.
My phone OS is coming with Gb 2.3.4
Baseband version I777UCKH7
KERNEL version 2.6.35.7
Build number UCKH7
Could you please directed me which version of the CF-Root.... have to download????
Thanks a lot again
