I rooted my DC following the instructions in this thread:
http://www.chargeforums.com/forum/droid-charge-hacking-guides/1264-how-root-your-droid-charge.html
After you download all the required files, you start by flashing CWM which I did and it worked fine, both the installation and actually using it for the second part which was installing the PBJ zip file.
Now, I can not for the life of me get back into CWM. I hold the Vol +, Home, and Power buttons, wait till I see SAMSUNG then let go. The phone just boots up like normal. I read somewhere to keep holding the keys mentioned until SAMSUNG goes away, so I did that and then let go of the buttons. She still booted up normally.
Yesterday I flashed EP3HA modems to the phone and wanted to go into recovery and make the phone reboot (because that is what I did on my D2).
Do I have to re-install CWM every time I use ODIN?
Are there different versions of CWM? I seem to read in threads that you have to have a different version for different flashes/installs.
Thanks from one confused NOOB
Edit: as soon as I posted I read this in my link above:
"On the second time just as logo appears, let go of all the buttons (thanks to ytleinad on xda for this tip). Welcome to Recovery!"
It worked!
Can delete this if you want.

My phone will not turn on. I was doing a factory reset, but it seemed to freeze, so I did a battery pull. Now my phone is either stuck on the samsung logo, or an empty batter symbol with a white circle. Please help.
Only thing I can think of is to try to get into download mode (remove the battery, plug the phone into a computer, and press the volume down button). If you can get to download mode, you should be able to flash a stock rom via Odin (instructions for this can be found in multiple threads on this forum.

Yes, do that.
download odin and the stock 2.1 build. then place your phone in download mode. flash the rom the way the instructions tell you too. then walk into your local uscell and complain til they give you a new mesmerize. that should solve all your probs
Got mine to reboot
i got my samsung mesmerize to turn on by pressing in the startup button on the right AND the volume control button on the left (up, don't know if that matters) at the same time for a few seconds (at least 5) and eventually the SAMSUNG logo appeared and it is now working fine.
I hope this helps anyone who has the same issue!
lately EVERY time i reboot my phone (running ics build 2, 3 and 4, stock kernel) it gets stuck on samsung logo.. somehow my phone will only boot into the frigging cm7 recovery which as im sure youre all aware is rather useless to fix any problems im having in ics and leaves me unable to flash, backup, or restore anything. it's quite frustrating and i have no idea how to fix it but by going back to bml, re-partitioning, then odin ei20 modem, cm7 fixed recovery, then flash back to ics but doin this every reboot it getting very tedious..
ive read about recovery loops, but the fix doesnt work for me as i cant mount the ICS /system partition in cm7 recovery...and ive been all over trying a zillion things to get it to work and havent pulled dmesg or logcat but if someone thinks it would be useful ..i wish i knew why EVERYTHING is great, then BANG, reboot and it's FML city.
I have searched high and low and it looks like I may be alone with this problem...Sigh... I have a stock rooted ROM with Rom Manger installed. Everytime I go to apply a zip file they never get applied. After 1 second of starting it says installation suceeded but when I look, one of 2 things happens a) Absolutely nothing or B) my status bar disappears and I have to restore. I have tried flashing Kernels, Battery mods, Etc.... Any clues?
When you go into ROM Manager, what is the 'Current Version' showing in Recovery at the top? Did you install CWM via ROM Manager or another method?
Also, can you manually boot into CWM and install the zip? Power the phone off completely. Press and hold both volume keys as well as Power. When you see the Samsung logo come on, let go of Power but keep holding the volume buttons until you see the blue CWM screen in a couple seconds. Try installing the zip that way.
Make sure to use the volume keys to navigate through the lists and the power button to select the option you want.
I am running version ROM Manager 4.8.0.5 and CWM 5.0.2.7 I will try the manual reboot and report back. Thank You.
Update- Just tried the manaul way and CMW says installation completed after like 1 second but then just become unresponsive staying in CWM until I do battery pull. Very frustrated.

Ok what kind of file is it you're trying to flash? Name and/or its purpose.
DaG's kernel, 14 notification mod, anything in the form of a zip format for CWM Falshable. I have done it many times but this one has got me.
Did the OP say if was just on a rooted oxed ROM? If so those MODs cannot be applied that way.
OMG didnt even think of that ggeez Im a big dummy. I will check.
Ok pretty much a new guy here.
I was able to successfully root my phone back in December.
I used Odin3 v1.3.exe and the all_in_one_odin_ep4d.tar.md5 that I found on the website.
It was easy and pretty much flawless.
Now for the last month or so I am getting verizon system updates (i've just been ignoring them) and my phone performance has gone down.
I want to update my phone but still be rooted, or I want the messages to stop and my phone performance to improve.
I've done some browsing, but everytime I look more into it I just get more and more confused.
I like the packages that have the Blue theme options like TweakStock or Eclipse, but I have no idea what I have to do to run these, to get this rooted software on my phone. What is the difference between Stock-rooted, TweakStock or Eclpise?
It would be very helpful if some one could layout the specific links to files that I need (not the threads) and the order I need to flash them in. Or if there is a all-in-one thread somewhere for the new update or TweakStock or Eclipse that would be helpful too.
Thanks,
Paul
p.s. I attached a screen shot of my phone info, not sure if that is helpful.
I would recommend Tweaked. Check out this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592428 and follow the instructions
If you don't have CWM I recommend you get it. It makes most things much easier.
Not sure the best way to get back to stock and I am not sure it is really needed but look in the dev section and you will find the odin for that.
also, remember that if you have CWM installed, and you have problems you can pull the battery, put it back in, Press and hold volume up and the Home key and then hold power. Let go of the power button when the samsun logo appears. This should put you into CWM.
hold vol up, vol down and power to boot into download mode.
Ok I have CWM.
I didn't know that I did... I have version 4.0.1.4
never knew how to use it before.
thanks for the help!
Been trying to Root this phone for a couple of days. Finally manged to do it!
Its the Rogers Samsung Galaxy Rugby. The (GT-S5690R) model.
I had to add the (R) in the updater script. Thats how I got it too root.
1. Put the file on your sd-card Universal_GB_ROOT_v5_patched_for_S5690.zip
2. Turn phone off
3. Boot in to Recovery ( press Power, Vol-up, and center button on bottom of phone all at same time. The samsung logo will appear, keep holding all buttons, then the logo will dissapear then re-appear, when it comes back let go of the power button only. The phone should boot into the 3e recovery)
4. use vol keys to navigate through menu, and use center button on the bottom of the phone to select.
5. Select install update from sd card.
6. press on the Universal_GB_ROOT_v5_patched_for_S5690.zip
7. phone should install root, wait till the 'Success' appears, then reboot.
You should find Superuser app when your phone reboots. You are Rooted!!
Now im just trying to figure out how to get a custom recovery!!
Perfect!
This zip file worked perfectly on my Rogers Galaxy Rugby. Many thanks!
Happy to hear

Big problem now though....
So the root went swimmingly, but I got a little too excited removing pre-installed apps. I backed up and removed Samsung Home, and removed and NOT backed up SNS 1.0. The phone will now refuse to boot unless I wipe data/factory reset in recovery mode, but after that it just ends up crashing during the Android wizard start up....
This is a brand new phone, what can I do to restore those apps, and get it back to the way I received it earlier today?!
There is a way to boot into safe mode, head Google mod2extreme and I find the forum for our phones (currently the only one) find advise there

Thanks for the name of that forum! I've found the guide someone posted here: http://www.mod2xtreme.com/showthread.php?t=12386 and I've decided to try it.
I'm using the first firmware listed in this thread: http://www.mod2xtreme.com/showthread.php?t=11744 (S5690XXKL1 2.3.6 2011 December S5690OXFKL1) mostly because under Country/Carrier it has nothing, so I'm assuming it's more generic than the others. I'm also keeping in mind this is for the 5690, not the 5690R, so it may not work at all. But, worth a shot since my only other recourse is to break down and cry in front of a Rogers attendant to see if he can give me a new one. "Root? What's root? Like ginger?"
I'm using v.1.83 of Odin3, which is listed as supported the 5690.
Downloaded KIES 2.0 from http://www.samsung.com/my/support/usefulsoftware/KIES/JSP - It gave me two DLL registration (COM) errors during installation on Windows. Uncertain if this will end up screwing me over or not.
Be right back, rebooting now that KIES is installed... will edit this post when there's more to report.
EDIT: Yeah, so I ended up trying both Odin version 1.83 and 1.85, with the Marvell .pit file, and the firmware from that thread. I learned that I had to put the phone into Download Mode, NOT Recovery Mode while trying Odin. Even still, nothing worked. I've given the phone up to Rogers and they will try to replace the original ROM, hopefully they won't notice that I've rooted it and really mucked everything up. They said if it doesn't work they'll send it off to Samsung to get it repaired. Anyone know if they find out I rooted it, I'd have to pay for voiding a warranty or anything?
i have the same device hae you manage to get clockworkmod recovery on it?
Does this method erase all personal data/downloaded apps from phone?
Great it worked perfectly...
did you success in installing different firmware?
Thanks again
Thanks a lot, worked like a charm.
Is there a way I can install Clockwork Mod? Rom manager doesn't recognise the s5690r. It gives me the option of selecting the Epic4G or the GalaxyS i9000. will either of these work?
Also, once I get that figured out, is there any roms compatible with the s5690r? I've scoured the webs with no luck. Not a very popular phone, eh?
Thanks again.

Good Day, I am also working on the Bell Canada Version of the Rugby. It is the GT-s5690m model. I am now stuck in a bootloop and don't know how to fix it. I have played around with the root and unroot zip files that have been floating around but I am certain that the bootloop is due to not being able to clear the Delvik Cache. As you are aware Clockworkmod recovery is not supported on our devices. I am unsure how to get it to work. Until then I just keep trying different things to hopefully get this phone up and working. It is quite a rugged device and would be great with a custom rom and recovery. Could you explain to me in layman's terms how I might create a flashable clockwork image to flash via Odin or even through stock recovery. I would love to get this phone up and working. Thanks in advance
Sasktel Rugby
Hi there. I am working on the Sasktel version of this phone as well. I tried to change the model from R to M because this phone is the same as the bell model version but it would not install it. I found it on the external SD card but it will not run the zip file from the 3e recovery. Any ideas why this might be happening?
Thanks,
First off, an eternally grateful thanks to @shabbypenguin for compiling what seems to be the missing link to flashing a custom recovery. Please direct all thanks to him. Check out his profile for a donation link!

As with anything non stock, only you are responsible if something goes wrong.
These are the steps I used for my Sprint Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and it worked for me.
It may not work for you.
I cannot provide support in case anything goes wrong.
There are virtually NO ROMS out that I'm aware of that are able to work with Sprint service. My tab is out of contract so I'm going to be working on loading wifi only ROMS.
Backup your shizzle. Expect to lose data and you won't be caught off guard.
MultiPart:
Install CWM
Compatable ROM information
Requirements:
Appropriate Samsung Drivers
ODIN
The shabbypenguin magical image. @shabbypenguin
ATT Espresso ChildOfTheHorm clockwork recovery
Root. Cydia Impactor works on this tablet to root it. Install SuperSU and Busybox off the market once it's rooted.
Optional (Recommended):
Stock Recovery Image..
Return to Stock Thread for a just in case scenario.
Steps:
Make sure drivers are installed and ADB can see your tab.
Reboot into download mode by either typing "adb reboot download" or by holding volume down & power when the device is off.
Open ODIN. Usually do this with administration privelages to negate any shennanigins.
Device should show up on the top left. Click AP / PDA and select "espresso10spr-cwm-test1.tar". Don't click start yet!
Get ready to hold volume up. Auto Reboot is selected by default. Don't click Start yet! When the flash is done the tablet will reboot. You want to go into the recovery on the first reboot or the flash may not take.
Get ready to hold volume +, press Start. When the tablet turns off, HOLD volume +. It will say booting recovery, act like it took, and turn off. This is the voodoo feature of the ShabbyPenguin file.
Turn the device back on, and reboot into download mode again. This time selecting the "cwm_recovery_espresso10att_childofthehorn.tar.md5" file. Same thing, get ready to hold the Volume + button when the tablet reboots.
Viola. Violin. Vegasaurious Rex. Clockwork should boot. At least it did for mine.
If anything goes wrong, there's a link in the optional list to revert your tablet back to stock. As well as the RECOVERY ONLY stock image you can flash with ODIN.
Some footnotes, sometimes with my tablet it doesn't like to turn on after a failed flash. A workaround for this is to hold the power for around 3-5 seconds, wait one second, and then hold Volume -. You should be presented with an option to go to download mode or restart the tablet. Select restart the tablet to get it working again.

YES!!!!
Flashing the recovery worked for me. I can't wait to hear from you as to what custom roms are ok to flash.
Thanks a bunch!
Anybody find any ROMS yet?
I so hoping someone has made some progress with this.
Thanks to all those who have gotten us this far!

It's beena slow process. All the ROMs I have tried don't really do well. Wifi not working, that kind of thing. I was waiting to see if more roms came out to try. I'll be checking again in the next few days.

I just inherited one of these suckers and would love to see upgraded past Jelly Bean. What ROMS did you have success flashing? I'm not seeing much out there about flashing this device besides what is linked to this post, and no specifics were ever mentioned, just that it might be possible with some serious bugs. Can you point me in the right direction?

Good luck brother. I've been looking for a custom ROM, or ANDROID update forever. Please, please, please, reply to this thread if you are successful getting this tablet past JB.
