Hey I'm in need of some serious help. My power button no longer works. It's as thought the phone thinks its constantly being held down. (Put battery in phone boots up by itself). I'm pretty comfortable with flashing roms etc and I need to get the bootloader locked for my warranty. I've tried multiple ways (I've done it in the past for friends). The 'fastboot oem lock' in fastboot via cmd doesnt work. It appears to be due to the power button being held down. It wont progress any further. It is not physically jammed (trust me ive tried fidgeting with it lemme tell you). I'm at a loss. Any ideas?
Have you tried taking the phone apart to see what could be holding the power sours down?

I thought about it but it appears perfect. Looks and feels like it normally does. That's why at first I thought it was software related. Nope alas it was not. I tried pulling it with tweasers and there is no response at all
Same thing happened to me and I sent it in for warranty with the bootloader unlocked. Samsung fixed it and no charge.

Thanks for the replies. It's impossible to relock in this state! I did manage to unroot and install a stock rom so at least it's gonna look somewhat legit when I bring it in. Going to the Samsung repair center tomorrow (there is one not far from me so I dont need to send it). I'll let you know how it goes. Wish me luck!!
So I went in today to the Samsung repair center and 2 hours later my Nexus is good as new . Pretty classy of them. That's really good service. They didnt even question the unlocked bootloader and it was covered by the warranty. This makes me want to stick with Samsung. When my Nexus One power button died it took like 4 weeks to get it back
Does anyone know how to force my Nexus s into recovery? Its stuck in boot screen

I have an entirely different issue but it involves me sending in my phone to samsung with an unlocked bootloader. My phone won't boot past the google screen and I can't relock the boot loader via adb. I've already sent the phone but didn't mention anything about it being rooted when I called customer service. Think there's a good chance they'll fix it no questions asked?

In CMD if you have adb installed type "adb reboot bootloader"
It will get you to fastboot and then select recovery. Or you can just hold the volume up and power on the phone (I'm assuming that doesnt work)

I am completely stumped. My wife's phone quit working today. It won't turn off without pulling the battery, if the screen times out you can't turn it back on without plugging it in.
I did a factory reset, same problem. I was going to try to root it and install a new ROM and kernel, but when I boot into fastboot the phone is not recognized on my computer (fastboot devices doesn't list anything) and the volume buttons are not responsive at all in the fastboot menu. I plugged my phone into the computer (another nexus s) and it is listed when I type fastboot devices so it is the phone, not a driver problem, etc.
I am out of ideas here. I have essentially a bricked stock Nexus S and a working CM7 Nexus S. Is there anything I can do or is this an issue I have to deal with samsung warranty?
Gonna have to put it in "download mode"(HOLD both volume buttons and PRESS power button)
Then.....
If its a Sprint CDMA version use SWUpdater: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1072698
If its a gsm, use odin and the correct firmware for your model

It's the original tmobile one. Any idea where I can get Odin and the correct firmware?
Also I have tried to get into download mode, but can't.
I am running out of ideas... At this point I am really starting to think it is a hardware issue

I do to. At least my daughter doesn't need a phone (she is only 9) so my wife can use her MT4G for a few days until we get a replacement NS. Just hope it doesn't turn into a bigger hastle than it needs to be.

3 hold volume up and down at the same time
4 plug into a usb cable connected to your pc while holding the volume + and -
now you have download mode
long story short, the g2x isn't mine but i have plenty of experience rooting android devices. the power button on this one is going so it's days are numbered but atm it's completely unusable as a phone. there's an issue as well with the sdcard. the rom i put on it isn't on it. it showed the file being transferred but for whatever reason it's not there. i checked internal/external....nothing.
so where i'm at now.....the phone's been wiped so powering on the device gets me nowhere. it's getting more difficult to get it to turn on at all so i'm having difficulty getting into recovery. i know it's volume down & power but is there a timing you need to get down? seems it either freezes trying to boot regularly or i go to the s/w screen. any help would be appreciated.
power and volume combo til you see the bluish purple LG logo.
I am not sure what method you used for recovery, but this is the thread I recomend. Follow that and let us know if it works out.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
Re-flash the rom to your sd card.
My lg symbol is white. As soon as I see it, it goes straight to the s/w screen. Would love to flash something again, just cannot until I get into recovery. Thanks for the responses but I'm afraid this ones dead Jim.

oh i know it's not bricked. my fingers tips are freaking sore from doing this all night/morning. just trying to turn it on without messing with the volume only works so often. it's just the power button being worn/defective. makes getting it into recovery that much more difficult.
Hope everything gets solved. Try the link it should work.

can't power on a device using adb sadly .
unless anyone ever came across an image file for your sdcard by chance for the g2x i think it's toast. what's a g2x that doesn't boot worth for battery/parts on craigslist?
Usually what I do is hold power+vol down til i see the lg screen, then let go of the power button but continue holding the volume down button.
Rom for recovery will get you back to stock 2.3.3,check the dev forum.
Just make sure you have apx drivers installed then u just nvflash! Make sure you hold both volume up/down the whole time or it wont work.

the problem is it wont turn on the power button is faulty or something...
My advice before parting it out... get it to boot to the lg logo again (hopefully) and then use adb I'm almost positive it will recognize it at the 1st splash screen. If not that then take it apart and with out the case I'm sure you can see what is causing the issue and fix it probably.
+1
Don't know if it would work or not but I'm thinking adb reboot recovery command would do it. If we can get it to show up in adb things can be done for it.

You don't even need to use the power button for rom for recovery, like I said b4 only holding both volume up/down the whole process will restore the phone back to stock gb rom. After the process is done it automagically reboots the phone, might I suggest an app called button remapper as well.. it can make a useless button (the search button imo) turn into your new power on/off solution.
Hope this helps!

never knew about the button remapper.....have discovered it since things went poopy already.
in any case, adb is recognizing it. never thought that it might, so thanks for the heads up there. however, typing "adb reboot recovery" isn't getting me anywhere. i haven't messed with the recovery but even trying to reflash a recovery just leaves me hanging at "waiting for devices"? can't even seem to get into fastboot mode either. appreciate all the help & advice everyone, thank you.
Have you tried the directions in this link yet?

Ok, first off, sorry about the reboot command, I didn't mean to communicate that that was the exact command. For what I do I usually use Droid Explorer. Which I think may be better in this situation. If it's waiting for devices (unless it's waiting for the device to reboot) then it didn't connect to the phone. But if it did connect then I have an idea. Can you clarify, for my tired mind, what you're meaning with being Connected and waiting for devices.

ok....was able to restore to stock.....rerooted.....have a working recovery again. thank you everyone. i've been through a few different phones and i have to say, it's refreshing to be on xda and have this kind of a response.
on another note, i found buttonremapper but it doesn't seem to work for the g2x (or at least mine). i know cm7 can use the volume to wake the phone. that was what was on the phone before things went bad but it wasn't working. i have no idea how old of a nightly it was though either so i suppose i'll start with that.
big thanks again to everyone!

Hey,
Yesterday I rebooted my i9023 and it won't start anymore. I pulled the battery because I forgot to start in bootloader mode, and I think I might've done that while the bootloader was starting up. I assume the bootloader is corrupted, or something. Buttons don't react anymore, nothing is displayed on-screen when charging, can't get into bootloader or download mode. I've tried all the things I could find, including this, but no dice.
I'm gonna make myself a USB JIG tomorrow and try to get it into download mode, but before that,is there something else I could try?
You can't even boot into fastboot mode? Even if its a black screen did you check if the computer detected it?
You can try the typical method of getting into download mode: hold vol+ and - and plug in the usb, not sure if it works that way with the Nexus. I see i9023 odin images available at sammobile.

Nope, can't boot it into anything and the pc doesn't detect it.
Sadly another confirmation that pulling battery to save seconds is a bad idea, happened some people before. Hope you can save your phone.
Well, I hope the JIT works. Otherwise, it's off to warranty, and hopefully they can fix it....It'd be sad to have to get a new phone...really really like this one.
Don't you worry. Just send it on warranty and they will replace your motherboard. I did exactly the same thing, pulled my battery to save some seconds. I sent my phone to repair, they took care of it in 10 days

Is there a chance to recover the data? I don't have much on it, but I have photos I haven't pulled.
That was my biggest concern. I'm afraid you'll loose all data, just as I have lost mine. Some (or all) of your photos might have been autosent to your gmail account. I managed to restore only some of those photos. Not all of them have been sent to my google account.

Yes, but your computer was able to detect it, if you could do that. Mine is literally a brick right now. Computer doesn't see it and it doesn't start at all. I'll try the JIG later, and if not, I'll send it to warranty and hope for the best
JIG didn't work. Didn't react at all....I'm sending it to warranty...
Recently my power button took a crap on me, and about the same time I noticed j cannot boit into recovery. I've tried multiple different ways, and every time it just boot loops. Shows me the Samsung logo then a black screen and repeats forever. The only way I can get out of the loop is to pull battery and enter download mode then reboot. I've tried reinstalling the newest recovery again also. Anyone have any bright ideas? I can't wipe anything or install anything new, and I'm getting frustrated. :banghead:

Which recovery are you actively using (or trying to)? If its cwm, are you sure you got the right one for our phone? Download ROM manager and let it flash the correct cwm and then try rebooting if that still doesn't work odin the phone to stock, reroot and attempt again

I sent my GS3 in with the same problem. The phone power button started to do crazy things and would not stay in download mode or in recovery mode long enough to flash anything. They are sending it back fixed today. Samsung knows about the motherboard going bad on these devices but they wont tell you about it.

Yup called them directly. I told them that it was rooted but had a hardware problem. They told me that I can send it in since it was still under manufacturers warranty and they would tell me if it could be fixed. Sent it in on May 28th. Just got email that they are sending it back fixed.

so i tried to revert back to stock last night using odin and something went terribly wrong. still believe it is due to my power button. i got one section as failed and one as passed in odin. the phone shut off at the end and said it was rebooting, but it never did. eventually i unplugged it and tried to get it on with no luck. if i pull the battery and reinsert it, the phone vibrates, and i get a screen that says "Samsung, custom" with and unlocked pad lock. i have never seen this screen before. i also can only get to download mode for about 2-3 seconds before the screen goes black again. So i cannot retry the process, i now have a brick. Anyone have any suggestions? i was going to send it back to samsung today, but i don't believe they will touch it in this state.
reading up on hard bricks, and mine doesn't seem to be quite that since i can get into download mode. It just doesn't stay there, the screen turns off after a few seconds. obviously not long enough to odin. any help would be GREATLY appreciated. i now have no phone... this shall be interesting with the lady friend

As long as you get into download mode you're still ok. Send it into samsung and tell them your issue with the power button. They will fix your hardware issue and will load the stock rom back onto your phone.
I don't think they care as long as your phone isn't hard bricked. I'm sure they use odin anyways to update every phone that comes out of their service center.
Can anyone confirm this is correct?

Hey guys,
my brother owns a Nexus 5 (duh, otherwise why would i be here )
but anyways, his phone is just stuck at the boot screen. As in as soon as you try powering it on, it shows the Google sign but then it just continually restarts after that. I've tried entering the bootloader but as soon as I access it, it just forcibly reboots without me pressing anything. I'm kind of stuck here as I can't really do anything.
Does anyone have any clue what to do?
Edit: forgot to say he's full stock as in no root, no unlocked bootloader, no recovery etc.
Hi,
Keep the turned off for a bit and then try accessing the bootloader.. From there, go to the recovery and perform a factory reset.
If you can't access the bootloader or it keeps restarting again and again in bootloader, it might be a eMMC failure..

Perhaps its also worth to note that it will only do this when its connected to a charger but when disconnected, it wont even turn on (as in no google sign or bootloader)

Phones are not meant to be kept in the bag.. May be the bag hit somewhere and the phone took a brunt of it? Who knows??
Or it could also be a random failure..
Can you access the recovery? If so, try a factory reset from there and see whether it boots up?
