First, my apologize for poor engish
Please allow me to introduce LBE Privacy Guard, a small app wrote by myself. This app enhances Android permission system and protects your privacy.
LBE Privacy Guard works just like Windows UAC, it intercept vital actions (like send SMS, call phones) and requests to access sensitive data(SMS conversation, contacts, phone location, IMEI, IMSI, etc) from apps, then prompt for your confirmation. Unless explicit permit, such actions and request will be rejected.
LBE Privacy Guard also has a low-level firewall, supports per-app control like droidwall, but not require netfilter/iptables so it works on pre-froyo devices and faster than droidwall because it doesn't filter packets.
So why I wrote this app? Because android permission system sucks, it's very hard for average user to understand the meaning of each permission, there is also no way to track the behavior of installed app and no way to control the permission of installed app(except uninstallation).
I hope my app could bring dynamic permission control and real-time track for installed apps. So you can figure out which app is stealing your privacy and block it before your privacy stolen.
Requirements
**NEEDS ROOT**
Works on Android 2.0 and above.
Tested on various devices and firmwares, but not tested on Android 3.0 and 3.1 devices.

hi traumatism, i would appreciate if you could tell me your phone model, and the ROM you are using.
It looks like LBE Privacy Guard has some problems to obtain ROOT privilege during auto start process.

Installing now, this looks interesting. I'll report any issues tomorrow.

I was looking for something like this for the longest time... especially since my kernel doesn't support iptables. Installing now.

I am gob smacked, this application is brilliant!
Had it installed for around 2 hours now, no issues at all, works perfectly fine after reboot, doesn't appear to slow down phone or have any performance impact.
This should be included in Android by default!
Running it on HTC Inspire 4G with CM7.0.3

The "low-level firewall" does not filter packets, instead it removes network related supplemental groups of certain process. Without such supplemental groups, socket syscall will fail with EPERM, so the application will not be able to access network.
This solution neither require netfilter kernel module / iptables binaries, nor filter packets, it's faster. but it can't distinguish 3G and WIFI connections.

I love this idea! I haven't updated "att Mark the Spot" in months because they requested access to everything. The first thing was trust my root apps, sms, gmail & voice apps, then I blocked my phone ID from ALL apps. (would've been nice to have a "reject all" option there.) My question is, are there any legitimate reasons for an app to request my IMEI? Are there any potential negatives to blocking my IMEI from ALL apps?
Edit: I also experienced the force close on reboot, but LBE started right back up on its own. Atrix 4.1.83

No., It will only block apps and not the communication between your device and the carrier which is impossible on GSM networks.

Is anybody experiencing problems with blocked apps? Like fc or anything similar.

What can it do?

Are you concerned with certain apps required permissions? Then this app is for you!
Base on your settings, this app will automatically turn OFF location and network connections when it detects that certain apps are running, thus leaving the apps no chance of leaking your data. Looks useful! Even though I'm rooted, I'm hesitant to install apps that require root because of the obvious security issues. So non-root security apps are important.
I have a question though, will it block access for apps that run in the background, such as code run via Broadcast Receivers? If not, perhaps it could warn the user in such a case, because a malicious program could easily gather or transmit data in the background.

The app only monitors the current foreground process (the one that is dominating screen).
I'd suggest that, if an app runs a background service and raises a privacy concern, it is better disabled by other ways (uninstall, etc.)
There are two reasons why background services shall not be affected by the app:
- Background services may run a long time, thus disabling network or location services could cause much inconvenience.
- To disable location services, Privacy Protector will forward user to Location Settings page. Currently, if user decides not to take action to the settings and do not run the app, s/he can go back to home screen by clicking home button. However if Privacy Protector keeps forwarding user to Location Settings because a background service is running, it may be very inconvenient and could possibly annoy the user.

I guess many users aren't even aware that apps can run hidden in the background, let alone know how to detect background services. So I'm thinking about a warning to the user along the lines of "hey, you're blocking your 'Unhappy Avians' app, but Privacy Protector detected that app may run in the background, outside of our protection. If you're concerned, you may want to uninstall Unhappy Avians".

The app only uses features of Android API, it does not rely on iptables.
It has been tested on my Nexus One with Android 2.2 and 2.3 roms, I wasn't able to test it on 2.1 rom because I had difficulty to find one.
I've attached an APK which should be compatible with Android 1.6, but I'm unable to test it. Please give it a try.

If I want use Skype and deny App X, your app will turn connection off. But i don't want lose whole connection.

The top device which contributes to the 1200+ downloads is Galaxy S2. There has been 4 crash reports in total (the app occasionally crashes after loading apps.. I'm still investigating) but none of them came from S2.

wifi access
Would it be possible to distinguish between data and wifi (like Droidwall)?
The phone it's installed on, has a bad chip and shouldn't be rooted, but I'd like some apps to only have access to wifi, and other apps have access to both data and wifi.

Does not work on Nexus 4 with Jelly Bean
I ticked the LOC box next to Facebook app, saved, enabled... then opened Facebook app and posted a status. My location was right there in the status post

The root function for antitheft of avast (free) and cerberus (paid) i think are worth mentioning. They are wipe surviving antitheft apps that can remotely control several aspects of the phone through internet or sms.
Also, if on gingerbread, droidwall and pdroid are the paranoid's best friends (pdroid if successfully gone through the hassle of patching). Together give almost full control of permissions for apps, specially those with access to private data.
Edit: i think this list can be good, but maybe add a short description of what you use the apps for, and what advantages they might bring. Also, tasker and set cpu make juice defender irrelevant.

I don't see the point on having a anti virus, cause all the apk's are scanned my Google....and unless u use mms the chances of virus are low...and keeping those apps on drains alot of battery

APKs are not that safe.
Yes they are scanned by google but they are all not "safe"
The popular game Paper Toss was collecting peoples data.
Everyone should be aware that it may not be viruses but taking your information is to me considered not "safe"
You need to read the permissions before installing.
If you download a live wallpaper of the ocean waves it shouldn't have the phone permission to "read phone identity" or "access hardware controls".
I didnt just make this up. The comments of shady apps are flooded with people asking what the permission are needed for.

"PhonemyPc" is a pretty good app to remotely access and use your PC.

"Shush" is a good free app which once you put your phone on silent or vibrate you can set the time when you want it the normal sound settings to come back on, ideal for use at work or meetings.
"Anydo" is a great note app & is super stylish, which comes in black or white & ics blue, one of the best note apps on the market.
"Quickpic" a great gallery app which is a brilliant alternative to the stock gallery, also themed in black or white & a great layout.
"Zipsigner" is a apk signing app, you can modify your zip app files & then sign it using this app, then install & enjoy your Modded app, really easy to use too.
"Ringdroid" a ringtone maker app, use this to cut your own music tracks up & turn it in to your own custom ringtones or message alerts.
Loads more to mention really but this is a good start :0)

I definitely recommend Cerberus as mentioned before.
I'll also suggest Solid Explorer as it's smoother than the file explorers you mentioned and has a great UI.

I used LBE privacy guard, with which you can controll everything the app wants to have access to! It stopped working in jb (maybe allready on ics) (causes reboot)! So you better make a backup before installing it or look in the changelog if its compatable!

This guide is only for:
- Android 4.3 and above which has app ops (privacy guard)
App Ops (or privacy guard) can be used for:
- denying specific permission to a certain app
-checking which apps are kepping your phone awake and which apps are the one using resources like location, personal stuff, etc ( only if your app ops or privacy guard has " advance" option. watch video to know what it is.)
- preventing app from causing wakelock
-overall it can be sort of used like wakelock blocker, battery saver app ( because of its feature to block wakelock) and noob friendly way of determining apps that causes wakelocks.

I was a little late (actually lot late) to use app ops
It was recently that I started using app ops (now mostly know as privacy guard)
Not only can it be used for privacy purposes but it can also be used as battery saving app or wakelock blocker.
Different Roms have a little different app ops( privacy guard) some provides user advance options some don’t. Some even has little extra option and sort of interactive mode like xprivacy. (like temasek’s ROM which I use)
I am made this video with temasek’s ROM which is my favorite ROM.

I have asked for some screenshots on various threads of different ROMs. So that it will make a better presentation and comparison of different options in different ROMs. If i don't get enough screenshots in two days then i will myself download and flash some ROMs.

I faced same problem once. Don't remember now when and why as ut was long time back. I think it might have something to do with your ROM. If you are using xposed framework try using "app ops" module. I will try to recreate this error when i flash different ROM (Which is at least once a week) if i am able to replicate this error i will let you know why and what caused it.
I flashed one ROM over another after wiping just cache, dalvik and system which lead to same error message except it was when i tried to access "developer option"
So did you change your ROM recently without full wipe or procedure as mentioned in your ROM's thread?

App Ops module for xposed does not work as well. Same problem. Im on 4.4.2 Google Edition. I have Samsung s4. Flashed current rom with full wipe as it stated in instruction. Cheers

If you are using xposed. Try "app ops" module . uf there is app ops hidden on your device it will unhide it. But from some stock ROMs it has been completely removed. And in some custom ROMs developers might have limited its use(functionality).
Try asking in the thread of ROM that you are currently on. You will known for sure from there where the app ops is on your ROM.

Tried app ops xposed and it can unhide app ops in setting > more > app ops
Using samsung stock rom ubufnd2.

Android 4.4.2 not only brings in new features and bug fixes, but also removes App Ops from the OS which Google claims was mistakenly tagged along with the Android 4.3 update. The Apps Ops allowed users to control how much access can third party apps have on their personal data.
the app for which i have given you the link installs some customized version of app ops. not sure whether it will work on your phone or not.

Can someone confirm for me what some of the permissions are actually for?
Wi-Fi change
Data change
Bluetooth change
Also, if I allow an app 'Wake up', but not 'Keep awake' - could the app keep waking the phone in an attempt to gain the wakelock which it is being denied?
'Keep awake' only applies if the screen is off, correct?
If I deny 'Keep awake' then an app won't close down while I'm using it, but it could be put into hibernation (don't know the correct term) by Android while it's in the middle of a background task? Like a radio app could just close, or a browser which is downloading something could just terminate the download before it's completed?

On play store it says 'item not found'.

wake up means : if device is in standby mode then that app can wake up your phone from sleep. like Facebook app when you recieve some notification it wakes up your phone to show notification.
keep awake means: while your phone is in use. if you are using some app and it is performing some operation and your phone screen times out and display switched off. after a while your phone will go in deep sleep. this permission will prevent it from going in deep sleep mode and keep phone awake. for example if you are downloading something via some download manager. and you have denied that download manager "keep awake" permission. so after you screen times out and there is no other app or process that is keeping your phone awake. this download manager will not be able to keep your phone awake. so download will stop .
so you need to use these permissions carefully. make sure you don't deny some app permission which is essential for its normal function.
you can deny Facebook both these wakelocks if you don't care about getting facebook notification all the time
Wifi Change and Data change is normally shown in apps that uses data. and also have options like sync or download only on wifi or only on mobile data. it is essential for that app to determine the change. so that it can act according to its settings.
For Bluetooth change you need to tell me for which app you are talking about? maybe some automatic profiles app like llama, tasker, etc they need this permission as there are profiles or conditions like switch on Bluetooth when in this area or if connected to this Bluetooth device do this
few people denied "settings" wake up and keep awake permission and they screwed up their phone. they had to reflash the entire ROM . they reported no touch, device not waking up from deep sleep. etc.
so just be extra careful when you are experimenting with system apps.

there are plenty of apps that unhide App ops and some also flash App Ops files .

BTW your ROM does have app ops
below quote is from your ROM chnagelog 02/18/2014.
Enabled app ops in Settings > Security, Take total control of the permissions apps are granted when you install them from google play, VERY useful if you are concerned about privacy or you just don't want some misc app seeing your SMS's or having network permissions
