The best GB out there? - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I've tried about 3 diff. versions of GB on my SGS4G and have noticed the same problems from one to the next. The first problem is the low volume on the 1st ring. Another problem is the calls going straight to VM or at least after the first ring. The last is the call log and notification bar not showing missed calls. Are these normal issues with GB or am I special? I've read other posts in diff. phone forums via searching and people have mentioned it, but nothing in this forum. If there are not any fixes I'll probably return to FROYO. Its always boggled my mind reading these forums and trying out diff. roms on my phone. I usually end up with more problems than I had to start with after flashing diff. roms. Much respect to all of the devs for the time they spend on making new roms but, if the roms are going to be spotty, why bother releasing them? I don't know, maybe its just me. In short I would love to have that BULLET PROOF rom someday. Well, time to stop babbling. Thanks for looking.

I think you're posting in the wrong forum. This is the development forum. You're problems are not ones i have personally experienced with sgs4 GB leak roms. Please read the stickied sgs4g Bible and ten commandments.

This should probably be in Q&A. Regardless, I don't think the problems you're having are normal. I can say I've tried many different ROMs from here and haven't experienced those problems. It may be you need to do a factory data reset or something to try and get it back to normal.
As for GB ROMs, though, they're not official yet so it's difficult to have the expectation of bullet proof. All of the GB ROMs on here are created from leaked versions of the GB ROM from Samsung.
Once they release something official you'll have a more bullet-proof ROM (though not totally...nothing ever is) and the Dev ROMs will be even sweeter.
Best of luck to you, hope you get it figured it.

First off... thanks for taking the time to read the rules, Secondly, I'm surprised he didn't get roasted, and why give him the answers, just point him to the correct link which would be here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122508
Read Read Read.... and before you ask a question unrelated to chit... read some more..... Ohooo and here's an idea pal.... try doing a search for your question.... as far as opinions on what GB is the best, like the old saying goes... opinions are like assholes - everybody's got one

Consider this reply as a flame or troll attempt. Just effin read! Thats the best GB rom. Read!

The low volume is normal for the first ring.I'm surprised no one didn't mention that. You must be new to Samsung. Like previous posters said, read.

Is it normal for GB and not Froyo? Because on Froyo the first ring on my phone is loud. If it is a normal thing, it SUCKS.

The last time I remembered froyo had the low first ring too unless you installed a custom froyo ROM with it eliminated

So what ur saying is that its normal for samsung and not any other manufacturer? Because I'm sitting next to somebody right now that has a evo with GB 2.3.3 and their phone has a loud first ring. Hmmmmmmm

My phone came right from T-mobile with a loud first ring. And the custom Froyo that I have in it right now does have a loud first ring, but I'm not sure if the rom was altered to make it that way. If the custom rom can be altered to make the first ring loud on froyo, why can't it be done on GB? Just a question.

Probably because we don't have source for gingerbread. I believe the low first ring its a Samsung only feature. I like the feature because I have time to react before it rings loud especially in a silent environment.

The low first ring may be a sign of a worn out wringer inside the phone.

I have noticed the low first ring only with a GB rom... but the other thing I have noticed that with each rom I try - some apps in the market don't show... Example... I am Running GB Audiophile's Beautiful Sgs4g #2 KI3 - And I can't find CBS Sports Football in the market - If I load ICBINB GB, I can find CBS Sports Football in the market... anyone else heard or run into something like this ??

Read if you are a noob.

I am quite disappointed at people not reading. If you are a noob. Don't ask about flashing GB. There are many guides and flash the latest version, KH2. If you flash anything other than kh2 at the moment don't ask questions. not pointing fingers, but today, I replied to a thread saying that kg4 has issues with wifi calling. kg4 was released in july. This has been discussed hundreds of times, as well as you should flash the latest version. which is KH2. It doesn't have issues(none reported except for wifi strength which is on all gingerbread roms).
What i have noticed is that all people with wifi issues on gb(everyone). I had to take my phone to tmo today and I downgraded to froyo for that time. I had full wifi signal where I usually get 1 or 2 bars. And I must say, wifi signal is more or less the same even if it says full. Stop complaining about GB wifi signal.
I use wifi analyzer, and it does show a definite weaker signal with GB than when I was on Froyo. at work, I'm at the very edge of our wifi range, and sometimes it won't even connect on GB, when I had no problems connecting when I was on Froyo. I don't think it's the same.
Do you really need two threads for this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17287401
Read his reply, he's not a noob and states legit reasons for using kg4.
Post and threads like yours doesn't help noobs out one bit, it probably scares them off.

This is true. Also tested using wifi analyzer. Huge difference between froyo and GB. I'll continue to complain, the OP seems do his fair share.

Thats understandable people need to READ MORE..but if i was a noob and pay an X amount of money for a phone i would want to make sure,i get it right completely..you dont have to necessarily click on the thread..just keep going by..this community is not like the vibrant its still growing..so get used,to those threads..we were all noobs once lol
It sucks that the frustration level gets this high. We already have a lack of devs for our phone. These damn ungrateful noobs who want everything done in a customized version for free are who are driving the devs away from this board. Krylon and honk aren't even around much anymore and I can see why.
Really?
A couple of things...
First, if someone is still running or wants to run KG4, who are YOU to tell them they need to flash KH2? Also, KH2 is only available on THIS forum in deodexed format, so anybody who wants the odexed version (like me) would be SOL if they were relying on XDA alone.
Next, the wifi signal problem is definitely real. I could get a signal from my wifi a block away on froyo, and on gingerbread I can't even leave my yard, so all that 'there's really no difference in wifi signals' crap is just that: crap.
Finally, the devs are still around. They just do most of their work elsewhere, now. I'm guessing it's because nobody on these forums cares to read or follow the rules, and the mods are pretty lax at enforcing them.
All-in-all, though, if you don't want to answer a question someone has raised because you feel it's below you or they're an idiot for asking, then your course of action is pretty clear: don't hit reply.

Infuse ROM Without 1st Call No Sound Bug?

Looking through the known issues on all of the Infuse ROMs, "1st call after boot has no sound" appears to be pretty common.
Are there any AT&T Gingerbread ROMs out there without this bug?
Well actually theres no need to do a first " no sound call" at the first call just turn speaker on anf off that solves the " no sound bug"... and theres NO AT&T gingerbread rom at ALL yet, we only have Rogers GB rom and AT&T leaks.
Anyways just turn speaker on and off on first call and simple as that the "bug" is gone...
Hope i helped you
There is actually no official gingerbread roms. yet. but toggling the speaker will fix it. it seems to be more of a android thing really. the HD2 has this issue too.
Thanks... My Infuse is due to show up via UPS on Monday. I'll see how long I can wait until I give up on AT&T releasing the official GB update (if I'm lucky I'll make it a month). Then, I'll decide which of these ROMs to go with.
Since I use A2DP a lot, looks like CM7 & MIUI probably wouldn't be the best choices for me.

Everything boot. Just happens on ports. Ie it won't happen on Zeus or NumasX. Just toggle the speaker and done.

It will happen on all Hellraised ROMs. Should not happen on any ROMs derived directly from an AT&T leak.
I thought this was common knowledge, and been discussed a million times. There is really a thread on this.?? Lol

To a developer I'm sure it's common knowledge. Back when I posted this, I didn't know a Hellraiser ROM from my own elbow. Heck, even now, it's not always entirely clear to someone like me which ROMs are based on Hellraiser. Depends on how detailed the dev wants to be in the OP of their release thread.

G2X Discussion Thread (CM Nightly issues, ICS updates, etc.)

Well everyone, since my KANG thread in the development section has become a discussion thread since official CM nightlies started again, I've decided to redirect the discussion to here. I'm going to ask the thread in the development section to be closed, so it can stop taking up space there...instead we'll take up space here! Lol. But anyways I want this to basically be a continuation of the old thread...you can talk about your G2X questions, comments, problems, etc. here. This will be especially geared toward CM-related problems, but all G2X-related topics are welcome here I hope that everyone will continue to help each other out, and of course I'll monitor the thread to help as much as I can and research things if necessary. Enjoy!
This isn't necessarily CM-related but I guess it is in a way. I have been trying out EB's build 1 of ICS and honestly for the most part it works great already. The only big glaring issue (that actually made me revert back to Gingerbread today) was the incoming call problem I've seen reported elsewhere that when you try to answer a call, your ringtone restarts and it doesn't appear to actually pick up.
As for the G2X in general, I'm a firm believer that most common issues have been strictly software-based, which makes the resources we have here on XDA something like miracle workers if you think about it.

As it is always said, it is best to do a full wipe. You never know what issues may stick behind or get caused by not doing a full wipe, but give it a shot and report back and hopefully you don't have issues.

CM Nightly 226/Unnamed & Kernels
Recently transitioned back to CM from MIUI. Anyone try out the newest 226 (unnamed) Nightly yet? I'm still rocking the CM7.1.0.1 Stable, but for kernel flashing purposes, I'm trying to decide on a nightly.
I've used Faux123's UV/OC kernels, but seem to have lost my copy of his v0.4.3 (long term CM7.1.0.1 support). So, the newest v0.4.8 and T15 or ELF Trinity's won't work with mine. I know chip's vary, but mine seems to not like even the ELF Trinity kernel (which has worked for a few peeps running CM7.1.0.1).
Anyway, the breakdown of my ramblings are:
1. Anyone try CM Nightly 226/Unnamed?
2. Anyone happen to have a copy of Faux123's v0.4.3 kernel (CM Battery Version, not the DS driver) lying around? Or a compatible Trinity (preferred, actually)?
Eh, I know #2 is more wishful thinking. I'm mostly interested in anyone's experience with Nightly 226/Unnamed.
Ah, good to be back on XDA and CM, at that. I rolled on MIUI for way too long. Nice GUI & the customization was awesome, but man is that sucker a memory hog! Not to mention the random reboots and screen freezes... I should have never left my good ol' CM. Hindsight and all...
The only issue that I ran into with cm7/cm9 is the low microphone. I know this has been brought up in the past, but has been ignored as well. Some users claimed that it only happen to certain phone, but I'm almost certain that the issue lies within the rom. I do hope someone can shed some lights on this, cause i do miss using CM7.
long story short, i have a wiped g2x. power button is a ***** to turn on to the point that my finger tips are sore from trying to get it to boot into recovery since last night. i can only seem to get 2 different screens trying to do this:
a) the lg boot animation which promtly freezes as the phone has been wiped & i probably haven't held the volume down button
b) the s/w screen used for flashing a recovery, etc
the phone is not mine but trying to help someone out. is there a timing to releasing the buttons? seems that when it goes to the s/w screen, lg appears for only about a second and then straight to that one. any help would be appreciated.
edit: posted it here only because i'd been following the old thread which led me to this one. i was trying to update to the latest while this happened. i started a similar thread in q&a so if it doesn't belong i''ll remove it, thanks
I've been in a loop like this before. Make sure you have done a battery pull. I think the key is not to hold the volume down button so long, and then be patient for recovery to load, it takes longer than expected in this situation.
Good luck.

I agree, this is by far the most annoying bug and the only "show stopper" I can think of on CM7. I do not think it's a 'phone-by-phone' thing, because if I flash to stock or Weapon G2X, my mic volume is fine. It's only on CM/CM-based ROMs, such as MIUI. I can't count the number of times where people have told me to "speak up" until I'm practically yelling into my phone. I think there's a bug with noise cancellation that causes it to be quieter than it should be.

[Q] How is Zeus Total Reign?

Ok, I understand Dman pulled the download for ZTR, but I did get a copy of it before he did. I appreciate the work he put into it and I am not demanding. The only problem I had with version 6 was the screen of death that occurred every couple days. How has the new version been working for those who have it? Is the SOD taken care of? It's a lot of work and uncertainty to flash a rom, so if this one is still having the issue, I should probably look at other roms.
Thanks for the hard work Dman, not flaming, just trying to get good info.
That sucks, I didn't get to download it.

Actually, I did find some info and it looks like the main thing I love my phone for is playing my music over my car stereo, and that apparently no longer works.
I guess I need to find a good, clean rom that lets me do that. I really don't need fancy themes, just my bluetooth stereo, boot options, stable.
I haven't encountered the sod yet. Been running it for six days. I have seen a few force closes of the tw launcher, but it pops right back open. Battery life has been great, better than any other rom I have used. Good signal strength and wifi reception. I don't use bt so I can't speak to that. If you don't like the freedom of modifying, I don't suggest running it. The jkay mods are expansive

It's a lot of work and uncertainty to flash a rom, so if this one is still having the issue, I should probably look at other roms.
Thanks for the hard work Dman, not flaming, just trying to get good info.

Download Vagabond or lb3 stock deodexed. They work just fine.

Freedom of modifying and jkay mods? Does this mean you use other stuff to add things to ZTR?

Actually, I did find some info and it looks like the main thing I love my phone for is playing my music over my car stereo, and that apparently no longer works.
I guess I need to find a good, clean rom that lets me do that. I really don't need fancy themes, just my bluetooth stereo, boot options, stable.

No. The jkay mods are included. It allows you to alter a lot of the existing menus or screens.

I put it on my phone for about 24 hours. Nice rom. I didn't experience any problems or SOD myself.
I went back to my favorite ROM though...Saurom Rom JVU. Even though Saurom JVU is a Galaxy S I9000 port, I didn't feel ZTR brought anything extra. Saurom, on my phone at least, runs a bit smoother.
Both ROMS have the JKAY mod.
I haven't flashed ZTR yet as I'm still blown away by build 6 (my first Zeus experience), but from what I've read about ZTR is that there are some issues with it and there will be no fix. I personally don't like how ZTR was themed and I have found no problems with 6 so far so I will be sticking to build 6.
Ya gonna piss off Zel ...
Guess all the closed threads of zeus...didn't trigger any thought?

been gone for a while WTF happened to make damn close the threads ?
The problem with these single threads where EVERY question relating to a rom has to be posted is that they become impossible to read. They end up with so many topics being answered in random order, not to mention every one who has to make a post that says nothing but makes them feel like they are part of a big chat session, they are impossible to find the information you are actually looking for.
I don't know if it's just the Infuse pages. I never saw this issue on the HTC sections.
I really like the design of Zeus 6, but I can't have the frequent SODs. And I can't live without bluetooth stereo, so I guess ZTR is out. I guess I have to look for a new ROM.
As this rom is Discontinued all talks can take place in the Q&A threads. A search would have shown that i already closed alot of these. Searching before opening a new thread is part of the rules everyone agreed to before joining. Not following the rules can lead to being banned from the site.

Which ICS ROM for my mother's Daily Driver?

Alright so my mother has the G2x. I decided to messed around with it the other day and discovered that the stock GB ROM is a train wreck. I mean it's slow, laggy, buggy and quite frankly I'm not sure it does this phone justice considering the specs on it. She agreed to let me upgrade her phone to ICS after seeing how good my MT4GS was with it. But I'm looking for the most stable version of this for her phone. She's not a big game player, and she really only uses the GPS, camera, email, and facebook. Plus a couple of cross-training apps which I'm sure will port over fine.
That being said, which ROM can you guys recommend to me? Should I keep the stock GB, root to a GB ROM (if so, which one is best suited for her needs), or should I make the leap to ICS (if so which rom)? Thanks in advance!
Maybe you should check out one of the 500 threads abt this very topic.

Do any of the threads address the criteria for my mother's phone? Are they up to date? If so, how about helping out by pointing me in the direction of the 500 threads that are relevant on the topic? Or otherwise, state your opinion (which is what I initially asked for)

I have read some pretty good things about the AOKP Builds on other forums, not to mention having had some solid experiences myself with their stuff. Anything you found tricky or otherwise potentially annoying?
Thanks for the tip, regardless!
You need to keep in mind these things before getting an ICS rom. As of now, none of the ICS rom has proper video recording working. You can only record low resolution video with videocam illusion. Video playback on netflix also does not work. If you don't mind these things, ICS roms are pretty stable. IMO, AOKP and Owain's ICS ROMs are pretty good. If you want stable and fast GB roms, try hellfire phoenix 2.1. They are all in dev thread.

What criteria? There's no reason why GPS, Facebook, Camera and Email wouldn't be working on any ROM. Perhaps the best thing to do is head over to the development section and clicking on any rom; read the list of features and you'll know what works and what doesn't work. Pretty much any ROM that isn't experimental is stable.
Now if you want my opinion on it, I'd suggest you to go with Hellfire for both GB and ICS.
GB:

ICS:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501667
if you bother to read any of the comments, you can find out how stable they are based on the experience of others.
Basically this is an undercover "what's the best ROM" thread, something that has been asked over and over.
And ics is more borked then any other rom so I say don't use one of those

Given the quantity of ROMs, it'd be a lot easier to just get some opinions from a few people rather than scroll through 1,000 posts to find out which one is the most stable for her needs. The criteria stands, as I did not know that video recording didn't work. And considering that plenty of ROMs don't have stable MMS, wonky GPS, etc, they're relevant to ask.
I appreciate your opinion and input, thanks for it. But I didn't really need a lecture on how to look things up. If this thread causes you that much trouble, then just ignore it and I'm sure your day will be fine. Chances are good it won't affect you in any way. There are likely other people who have no problem giving their opinions on the topic.

Agreed. Not that I don't use ICS, and not that I don't have ICS on my wife's phone, but if I were to put a rom on someone's phone that I don't have 24hr access to for updates, etc., it would be GB.
Well that's just how it is sometimes. You gotta actually work to find the answer to something.
It's nice we have such generous members like mt3g, MWBehr, dw9906 and zechizen, however, who are more than willing to give their input.
P.S. There's a search button to keep you from having to scroll through 1000's of posts. Ridiculous how you don't know that video recording doesn't work on ICS since there's a new post every few hours talking about LG and Nvidia not giving out drivers for the G2x.
Ya especially, if you aren't around to help out if something does go wrong. And artisan (I think is his name) is right there are two main threads that are just a couple scrolls down in GA section and Q&A that address which roms are being ran and one that address most stable.
p.s. owains ICS with Harsh latest kernel is best IMO ;-)
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
agree ^ i like fauxs kernel tho since you can overclock and under clock but for a daily driver and not caring aboout chaging the voltage harshs kernel would work just fine
Only reason I say harsh's kernel is cause I never lose wifi connection like I do on all others, well I haven't tried faux with owains latest but why fix what isn't broken.

No need to get feisty. And it seems like you already know some of the down falls of some of the ROMs. Really you should search though. But that is neither here nor there. I say you skip ICS for now. I'm sure a lot of them will cause some headaches for your mum. I say you go with HellfirePheonix 2.1 personally.

The current hacky state of ICS is not up to the task you are asking it to do here.
It's a reasonable question, sorry we seem to have more than our share of guys with their period at the moment.

Use cm7.2 rc and faux kernel.

Thanks a bunch for the input everyone. Decided to go with Owain's with harsh kernel, sounds pretty ballin' to me. And considering my mom gave me free reign to **** around with it, I'm all in with ICS

If she uses video camera I would go with one of the GB ROMs here, they don't have any of that stock LG crap holding it back.
Try Tsugi.
