Me too! My PIM.VOL on my WM 6.5 is 19.3 megabytes! I need to get this smaller. I tried using PIMBackup to save each section (contacts, tasks, appointments...) in csv format. My plan was to kill PIM.VOL and restore those sections back in to it. But something is wrong with my calendar (appointments) and PIMBackup keeps freezing. At this point I am thinking to manually go through my appointments and write them down. Then I will have to figure out how to wipe out the old PIM.vol and then put them back in manually. I think what messed up my PIM file is the ActiveSync. Most every time I used that it made trouble. It would double up my contacts and appointments or lose them. I don't use that anymore. I tried Google Sync. That was good for my contacts but it could not sync my appointments. I believe because PIM is all messed up.
Have you got any better ideas? Thanks for your help.
Eli
SKTools can do this nicely.

How do I clear just the contacts or just the calendar entries from my WM 6.1 tytn?
I could not find any tool to specifically remove one or the other.
Any thoughts?
a semi automatic solution
use pim-backup's delete all option...i'm just not sure if it will work without at least single contact
this is how i would do it,make a backup of single contact and a single apointment, when finished run restore and select to delete all existing contacts and apointments...when finished manualy remove thoses 2 entries...
when i have doubled entries because of syncing...i just restore backup with delete existing option
or you can delete pim file...but you will lose all personal information data...maybe even more
try playing with pim backup...you can't loose anything...except your contacts maybe

But, with PIM Backup you can get them back instantly!
There's this: http://oldsap.blogspot.com/2008/06/os-clean-calendar.html for the calendar entries.

yes it's true but it takes only creativity for solutions like this...well if you dont have an app
and the app seems to be modifiable...because it's probably just a few code lines
maybe we could change the target
but it would be easier to find a real app to do the work
hey what about deleting the pim file from windows folder...you would lose all personal data (contacts, apointments, tasks, messages, mails) which is why it's called pim personal information...something
I want to save all my text messages, contacts, call logs, favorites, notes, tasks, etc.
I CANNOT install any new software on my phone, and even if I could, I couldn't run it. I can't start any programs on the phone except Calendar, Contacts, and search. Everything else is screwed up.
I can see the files in Mobile Device on Windows, but ActiveSync does not work, and some of the files are not accessible. Which files do I need to copy? I've got pim.vol already, but what specifically does that contain? Where are text messages stored? I plan to do a hard reset, and if that works, to copy the backups back onto the phone and then back them up through a normal method. Then I can re-flash with something newer to make it functional again.
When I look at Properties for \Databases\MSN Object ID, it says 356 bytes and 0 records, last modified 1/19/2008, which is around the date when I last flashed my phone to upgrade to WM6.
Oh! Is cemail.vol where the mail is stored? It's only 800 kB, last modified 8/12/2008, which is the day my phone crapped out and the day after I installed Funambol synchronizer.
Try PPC PimBackup, it will backup all your stuff and its realy easy to manage backups!

@endolith
PIM.vol : PIM stands for Personal Information Management, PIM.vol contains PIM data like appointments, tasks, notes etc...
Sorry, but i don't know how to backup data without running any backup program...

Well I can copy files like PIM.vol and cemail.vol, and then if I copy them back onto the same AKU I have heard that it will recover them (and then I can use something like PPC PimBackup before reflashing).
My device an Atom Life WM 6 has locked up.
-the screen is locked up on windows boot image- cant control pocket pc
-soft reset battery pull anything i can think of does not help
-my safemode program isnt helping
Only option is HARD reset
Before I do that-
surprisingly can receive calls and sync over active sync
how can i back up the following:
- SMS - most important
- Contacts - second important
are there locations of these databases.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you
pim.vol
Hi
The phone module is seperate from the rest of the operating system, hence being able to function when WM has stopped responding.
I think that these databases are in a file called pim.vol. I can't be sure though. Maybe some other members can advise about back up software that runs entirely on the pc. The latest version of Sprite Backup perhaps?
Cheers

If AS works then try Jeyo Mobile Companion, it runs purely on the PC and if it will connect then you should be able to export the stuff you need.
I copied over pim.vol but thats only contacts and tasks/appointments.
Anyone know the location of sms db.??
Unfortunately i do not have spb bakcup installed, dont think i can at this point.
I hope Jeyo works...
thank you
jeyo download sms's automatically.. but you will have to install a client side app.. if it doesn't do that automatically
just a suggestion for the future.
schedule a backup using PIMBackup2.8 to your storage card every once in a while..
the sms and emails are stored in "cemail.vol"
ok go here and install this http://www.mymobiler.com/
Once you have active synced your deivce, you can control it from ur PC
Then find and install PIM backup (using mymobiler). Then backup using PIM backup all your messages, contacts etc.
I find this better than using Sprite backup as this backs up registry too which might not always be a good idea when having problems. Its nice to have a simple PIM back up when needing to do a hardreset.

Me, very long way to go for that. Only been on here for 18 months when work decided they wanted to try something on WM5 phones. That didnt work out and I have snaffled one of them for myself. Have tried many things to get a finger friendly PPC and am as near it as I need.
This is a great little app for all winmo devices, its called XML Backup, best of all, its free. If you, like a lot of other people here at XDA, like trying new ROMs and apps that cause you to hard reset, then this app is for you!
Install the cab. find it in your programs list, start the app and then it will ask you if you want to back up or restore. For first time users, back-up your contacts list to your memory card (as so it won't get erased), you must press destination folder! Create a folder called "Phone Back-up" or what ever you want to call it, go back to your XML Back-up app, back-up your contacts to the newly created folder, press select all, then start! You're done! Now you can re-flash to your hearts content and never have to worry about losing all contacts again!
Even better PPC PIM Backup, this does all your messages as well as contacts.
Personally, I don't see a need for saving messages. If anything, being able to save 300+ contacts is enough for me! But, PPC Back-up PIM is a really good app aswell, my preference lies in XML Contacts
For me its the ability to retain SMS conversations over a ROM flash that means i have gone the way i have. My contacts are saved on-line anyway as I have a mail2web acount that does OTA sync of all the PIM data.
Just remembered PIM Backup also does your calendar, which again i don't need, see above, but others might.
I'm not going to dispute the fact that there are but apps for PIM back-up! I have tried some of them, but, XML is simple and easy! 'm sure as you know, the more stuff you keep on your phone, the more memory it uses and seeing as how I enjoy having as much free memory as possible, just keeping my contacts backed-up is fine!
For the newb's and the faint of heart, XML is a lot easier to work with and my personal choice for PIM back-up!

try vufone.com - syncs contacts, calendar, messages, pictures, videos and music to the web.
Rafi
Dashwire does the same thing, but, it can also send text msgs from your pc/laptop for free! I tried it out for a bit, decent app, but, stays active in the backround, therefore, killing your battery!
Hi All,
just a quick (and probably stupid) question. Can i copy the PIM.VOL file from my Serra to my SD card and then Hard Reset my Serra and then just copy it back and have all my contacts back ? Or is that just a little bit too easy ?
Thanks for your help !
It works, but you need to use Total Commander (or something similar) to copy it back (you need to over-write the stock pim.vol). I'm not 100% sure it's necessary, but if you first shut off TF3D (settings-today-items) and then restore pim.vol, when you re-start TF3D you will also get back all of your contact favorites in the Contact tab. This is the only way to do that that I'm aware of. Pim.vol restores all of your pim data except for messages. Those are stored in cemail.vol (I think), but it is a royal bugger to copy that file. If anyone knows how to do it, I'm all ears.

Hi Ted,
thanks for that ! Yeah, i got total commander ... i've been messing about with Windows Mobile devices for a while now and that allways annoyed me that you have to spend 1 hour + every time i hard reset just sorting my contacts out ...
Thanks again, you just made my life a whole lot easier ... my Serra needs resetting and i was reluctant to do it coz of the contacts issue ...

You can always use Pimbackup. It restores everything, except for the contact favorites, and it's fast. If you do the pim.vol trick, though, make sure that you only restore messages with Pimbackup. Restoring contacts will remove your contact favorites.
