I modded my blue chevron in maps/navigation to be something a little more personal for me - an F-22 Raptor.
Here's my work and how I did it in case somebody else out there would like to do the same
the files you need to modify are in the maps apk. My apk was called "com.google.android.apps.maps-1" and it's in the /data/app/ folder (I've seen the apk called ...maps-2 as well).
you open the apk with 7zip and look for the following files:
in /res/drawable-hdpi/ folder find the flie named "dav_chevron.png". This is the chevron in navigation mode.
and in /res/drawable-nodpi/ folder find the files named "vm_chevron_off.png" and "vm_chevron_on.png". These are the chevrons on the map.
modify these files to your heart's content and make them whatever you want but MAKE SURE YOU KEEP THE IMAGE SIZE THE SAME!
now, that you have your new images, you can drop them in the apk with 7zip, sign it if your computer is set up for it, and move your new, modified maps app to your phone's SD Card. You can also move the unsigned apk file to your phone and sign it there with an app like "signapktic". I did neither, I built a meta morph file (attached) and then built an update.zip file using zipthemer and had it sign the apk. I like the zipthemer option since it uses the version of the maps apk that's on my phone to build the new apk file for me. After I had the update.zip file built i just went in and extracted the signed apk.
regardless of which method you use, once you have your modified and signed apk, you need to go into app management and uninstall your current maps app (I think it should be obvious to most but it's never a bad idea to do a backup before you go modding anything). Then navigate to your new apk on the sd card using your favorite file explorer and install it! You should be good to go.
It's worth mentioning I that during one of my updates I got a bunch of login failures. Look in your notification bar for messages where maps is asking for permissions. select them and allow maps to do what it's gotta do.
That's it! I've attached my zipthemer file and a screen shot so you can see what it's all about! enjoy

pull down your notifications bar and select each login fail notification. it will take you to permission access page where you can grant or deny. after that, it worked for me.
latitude did take a while before it worked. not sure why.

I can't speak to the latitude issue since I never use it, never realized it was affected.
But CU2Fuze is correct on how to resolve the login fail issue. I mentioned it in the OP but I mentioned a lot of stuff and it was pretty easy to miss I went back to make sure I put it there and had to read it twice myself because I missed it the first time.
I can't say this causes it for certain (or why it might work this way), but when you finish installing the new maps app you get two choices. "done" and "open". It seems as though if I click "open" I get the login failures. If I click "done" and just go open the maps app in the app drawer or something it works fine. Do you remember which choice you made?

there went that theory
I unistalled and installed a couple different versions of the maps app today messing around with different images/sizes and didn't get the login fail once. Not sure the root cause but probably won't spend much time trying to figure it out since the accept permissions thing works it out.
I also just opened latitude to see if it would work on my phone with the F-22 maps. It did. Not sure what went down for CU2Fuze.

Disclaimer: I take no credit for this. I am just posting it here to bring it to the attention of more Galaxy Tab users as I found it in another forum purely by chance and I know some Galaxy Tab users are looking for it. I believe these apps are available and distributed freely by Samsung (correct me if I am mistaken) so there should be no harm in me posting them here
You can now finally have the fully functioning Samsung Mail, Social Hub and Samsung IM apps running on your Galaxy Tab. These apps provide seamless integration for virtually any kind of email account (including my company's very tightly guarded Exchange server!). The three apps bring together all your email (all with super-quick push mail) and IM into a unified inbox that is very easy to navigate through and provides very tight integration with the Tab's Contacts and Calendar apps even giving full activity history with your contacts in similar fashion to HTC Sense (though perhaps not as sexy)

Install the apps as ordered by filename then reboot for good measure

If you are having issues getting it to work you can try the following:
1. Install Seven.apk (attached below)
2. Put UnifiedInbox.apk (attached below) in /system/app/ using the following code:
Code:
adb push UnifiedInbox.apk /system/app/
3. Reboot
This should get it working and you can then update to the latest version using the first two files

Maybe can try Mercury Messenger or Trillian for Android. Both these apps work prety well; only problem is they are battery drainer. Samsung IM on the other hand pushes so theoritically less battery usage but it doesn't update friends list as often. Problem I faced with this IM is when I logged on to MSN and a friend logged on few minute later, the list is not updated; hence, IM show my friend as not logged on (offline). Mercury or trillian on the other hand updated it almost immediately. Anyway, it could be just me.

To be honest I haven't had that lag issue...
One of my favourite features about Samsung IM is that it is real-time push as you said...
The only [strange] thing I've found is that my Favourites group only includes 1 of the 6 people that are actually in the group (I haven't changed this recently so it's not a problem of the update taking time to reflect)

I found the easiest way to push and pull files (via ADB) is to use Android Commander.
You could also refer to the ADB for Dummies guide

Android Market: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.wiirecords.chrometophone
This app is entirely based on Chrome to Phone! It has the same features (and bugs, lol) as the original with some additional cool features! The original app is awesome and it deserves all the credits, this app is only adding more features!
Browser to Phone lets you process incoming links virtually anyway you want it:
* download anything to your phone, instead of just opening the link
* convert file to other formats (i.e. send a bmp link, convert it to jpg and then download it)
* apply wallpapers/ringtones (i.e. send an image link and apply it as wallpaper)
* open specific apps (i.e. send an appbrain link and open android market automatically)
* more and more!
There are plentiful preloaded processes to use. Send suggestions about new processes/commands by e-mail and if feasible, they will be added on the next update!
You may create custom processes for your needs, define when they should run and what they will do. As this is not a simple task, you may search the web for custom processes done by other users and import them.
Download Processes: http://www.thiagorosa.com.br/android/browsertophone/files.php
You need to install a browser Extension on your computer to send links to your phone. Each browser has its own extension and they can be downloaded from:
Google Chrome: http://chrome.google.com/extensions
Mozilla Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/foxtophone
Opera: https://addons.opera.com/addons/extensions/details/opera-to-phone

How does the REPEAT command work exactly?
I'm trying to create my own process and I need to wait a few seconds between commands, is there a WAIT (or similar) command?
I cannot seem to find the Chrome extension, would you help?
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search?category=ext&q=Browser+to+Phone
rhaige,
REPEAT has three parameters: regex, count, wait
The purpose of this command is to REPEAT the next command until the REGEX is returned. It will repeat COUNT times with a WAIT seconds interval between them.
tampiss,
It is the same extension from chrome to phone: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/oadboiipflhobonjjffjbfekfjcgkhco
Im trying it with the original extension, yet I always get error connection message. Normal Chrome to phone app works. Where can be a problem?
Where do you get this error message?
Is it on the android app? is it while connecting to your account?
or is it on the chrome extension?
thanks!
Yes, Im getting this message on Android app. I have just tried to uninstall Chrome to phone app and nothing changed. Even worse I have installed it back and now I can not connect on the official app too lol.
The same is happening to me now, it is probably an intermittent issue!
tampiss,
I was able to connect today! Please try again!
thanks!

Unfortunatelly not. The official app works again yet yours says the error while connecting. Im running Cognition ROM on Samsung GS2 if it helps.
tampiss,
I just tested again and both apps connect successfully!
There isn't any difference at all between the two apps during the connection. The only difference on Browser To Phone is that it processes links after they are received on the phone, nothing else!

Hi. It works great. I can not seem to find the pro version in Android market. How can I purchase it? Thank you.

Ive purchased it. Thank you.
Cool! Thanks!!! =D
Hi,
- are there anywhere any custom processes findable on the web?
- how could I make simple process to parse clipboards content sent from my web browser?
- where are the files (such jpg, gif etc) downloaded? I can not seem to find them on the phone
- please, how to process the apk download? I have created the process, yet I would like to start the instalation as soon as its downloaded? any hints for the needed intent?
thank you am really enjoying playing with this cool app
1) i didn't find any yet... but you can export yours and let other people use it
2) what would you like to do exactly?
3) they are stored on the sd card, inside the download folder
4) you should use this:
action=android.intent.action.VIEW
type=application/vnd.android.package-archive
data=the apk file (example: file:///mnt/sdcard/download/abcde.apk)
This APK process should be similar to "Image to Wallpaper"!
Ok to the point 4. If i do not know the exact name of downloading apk, what should i use for data in the intent? Any replace or variable trick?
Edit: i got it working yay
The input will always be concatenated on the DATA field. So you probably don't need to do anything!
The input will be the output of the previous command. If the previous command is a HTTP_DOWNLOAD, the output will be where the file was downloaded. After that you should replace /mnt by file:// (check the Image to Wallpaper process)
Did you notice the unit test feature? (menu)
You can easily test without having to actually send the link to the phone. You setup a unit test link (http://www........./yourapp.apk) and you can long press each command to test it!
Yep I have noticed all of that and tested.
I may have another question
When downloading img from Chrome I always get the img downloaded as xxxx.jpg(125x210) which stands for the img size. Well when I look at the Chrome tab I see it in the title. Unfortunatelly it is downloaded and named as above so that to open the downloaded img I have to rename it first.
Any hint for replace or solution would be great.
Thank you.
Edit: I have found a bug. When sending any text it has a wrong encoding. I use special chars such ěřč yet they come to phones clipboard as mess.
About the bug, there is an open issue on chrometophone: http://code.google.com/p/chrometophone/issues/detail?id=318
Hummm, about the extension....
I think I will have to update the app to remove the dimensions...
For now you could create a REPLACE, something like this (i didnt test it):
Regex: \.jpg.*
Replacement: .jpg
Anyway, i will fix it on the next version!
You can read the whole OP & description about what the app is and does over here. I will let the screenshots do the talking here

How to use it
when you click Uninstall, it will DELETE your current gps.conf, if you'd like to keep it just in case, please be sure to rename it or make a backup. This is YOUR responsibility.
After you uninstall it, click the one which matches your location. The program will download the proper XML file, and it wil place it in the right directory, and it will set all the proper permissions for you.
Thanks to tweezit for the suggestion (and testing) and kev0153 for the original gps configuration files.
Download Bloater 0.72
PS> this program is designed to be easily expandable, apps, whatever. Open to suggestions

I have one question. When I open Bloater all of the regions say Uninstall. Does this mean they are all currently installed on my phone? I only see one gps.conf file when I look in /etc
It's only one installed. It appears all 'uninstall' buttons mean uninstall you current gps.conf file. When you have selected that all the buttons will say 'install', then select 'install' on the region you want.

Hi, the other day i installed the JellyBean leak. And since that day, the battery had a GREAT life.
But, today, i don't know why (Well, yes, i do now why) my battery had a terrible life.
And, there's a curious process that is killing it.
It's name is: 'Mediaserver'.

Forget about my question. My english is bad, and i can't express myself right
I want to stop that process, because is killing my battery and i don't want to.
So, i freezed the process, and today i'll see if that process still bother me.
Edit:
Well @nikufellow, your answer didn't work. I freezed the DRM content. But, still drain the battery.
But, the good part, is that i desactivated the sync, and now, i think the battery is going great.
It was that all the time (i believe). The sync of the accounts.
Edit 2:
Mmm, nope. I was wrong. The 'mediaserver' process is in the top again, with 43% usage.
Are you using Google Play Music? Maybe experiment with that. Maybe disable sync for just that, or remove the app and see if anything changes.

If you have backups on the phone and they are in DUP change them to tar.

WOW.... does no one read or search on google anymore?
All you need to do to get the mediaserver app to stop "searching" your phone all the time and draining the battery, and using CPU, is to put a file in all your media folders on the phone that is empty and called .nomedia
Notice that there is a dot (period) before the filename, this is important.

I am not trying to be a jerk here, but with all the posts in here, and it appears that no-one even thought to google this, just irks me a little bit.
To the OP, create an empty file in all the directories on your SDcard named .nomedia, and see if that helps to stop the 'mediaserver' from eating CPU and battery. This has been an issue since the 1.8 days of android with certain file types and has only gotten worse over the years.

I already did all the pseudo-solutions that appears on google. And no one works. That's why i made this thread.
But, the solution that works for me, was, formatting the sdcard. That was the solution that i don't wanted to do.
You had the two solutions.
DRM freeze and tar instead of dup.

As a member stated it's the google play music (i believe). Cuz since I stopped using Google play music and switched to poweramp, i don't see it on ma battery consumption list!
Life!
I recently received another scammish text which led me to suspect an app or apk I installed was to blame (possibly). Is there a way to chronologically see things I've installed on my phone. Stock Downloads app won't work because if I deleted the apk or installed it in a different way it won't show. There should be a way to see all of the things you've installed non market, apks, modules, or whatever. To be able to trace back and find a culprit. Kinda like a criminal rap sheet.
Your best bet is TITANIUM BACKUP !!! Sort all apps by date installed it will give you time installed !!!

No. I want something that can chronologically list on my phone all of those things that I've installed or modified or installed then deleted. Like a total history of installs.

Past package installations, probably not. Future installations, maybe.
you're getting on the right track sir. Like having a time machine where I can go back in look a the things that have happened so I can pin point possible problems.

Last time machine I had was in '68. Wasn't worth a damn. Thing always broke at the worst times. I'm still trying to get back. I'd suggest not putting things on your device that might cause problems.

That's good advice to give about my device, from someone that can't take care of a 46 yo time machine. I need a way to log all installed/uninstalled apps, apks, modules, and /system changes. Where's it at?

Please elaborate....
Haven't heard of such a thing. Sorry.
Titanium can tell you app installs, even play store kinda keeps track. Initial install order anyway.
But to track apps, mods, alterations...anything? Nope. And flashing in recovery would not be trackable inside the O/S anyway.

Basically, if there isn't some kind of a thing on the play store....then it doesn't exist.
Scam texts are pretty common in some countries. I don't think it has anything to do with an app you installed unless you gave Snapchat your phone number as they got hacked a while back.
No snap chat for me. I thought of this idea for logs of this stuff before. There's got to be a way!

You may need to learn app development and make a way.

If you made an app to log package installs it would be a waste of time + have to be running on your device all the time. It'll also hardly be of any use, since most people aren't installing like 20 apps a day, every day. Just write it down if you really need to LOL.
For packages you currently have installed via Play or .apk installation you could go into /data/app and look at the dates on the .apk files. If you flashed something in recovery it'll show up as August 1 1970 or August 1 2008 or whatever generic date. As said previously, Titanium Backup uses this if you sort by date lol.
Edit, example (most mine are 25 July since I restored them through Titanium Backup):
