Hey fellas,
I'm a huge fan of the old school LucasArts games like DoTT, Full Throttle, Indiana Jones and games like the Leisure Suit Larry series. I was extremely excited when I read about SCUMMVM for Android. That excitement died when I then read that it currently work only on 1.5/1.6.
Anyone know if any progress has been made with the 2.1/2.2 versions? Can I help in any way?
Thanks! Let's get this ball rolling.
Turns out there IS progress!
http://anddev.at.ua/news/2010-6-2-1-0-1
Testing it out now.
Very interested in this - never really got it set up when I had a G1.
Thanks for reminding me My biggest loss moving to android was no scummvm..
Imagine running it on the nexus, using the trackball for mouse movement
There was some movement around 2.1 with a buggered beta of some sort as far as i remember, but we all need some froyo support now!
Is there still only one dude working on the port?

****edit
@rickytenzer: let us know how it works out
****Edit2
I tried the tremor version for no camera (since n1 doesn't have a dedicated cam button)
It takes 25mb worth of space..wow, apk boots fine on froyo, trackball support for mouse with left click. Unfortunately I'm at work and my roms are at home, so i haven't tried a game yet.. very exiting, anybody else tried yet?
Jesus ****ing christ, it's amazing! I was able to boot up DoTT with ease. Didn't get a chance to play with it yet (@ work ) but it seemed to be working well. The back button even acted as escape and skipped the movies! Awesome.
The touchscreen/trackball combo is great because sometimes the trackball moves too slowly so you can generally locate yourself with the touchscreen and then hone in with the ball.
I'll give more updates later!

I tried vorbis no camera. Any reason why you went with tremor?
Most ROMs you can get online legally and for free as they're abandonware. I just downloaded DoTT with no problems! And they're only around 10MB
Omgomgomg, didn't have patience too wait, so i downloaded freeware from scummvm site.. went for bass floppy version and it is beautiful
Sound, menu, everything
Will try my dott CD version and samnmax later..
Just went for tremor version because the dev couldn't get it to work on his Samsung, so i assumed tremor might be better/ tougher on the hardware and n1 has nice hardware
Dunno the difference, has to look into it. Does savegames work? Haven't had time to try (@work)
-e
Haven't tried yet. App settings don't save yet. I realized that the DoTT available online is sans speech so I'm going to get the full versions later, through obviously completely legal means of course
So excited! Have a 5 hour train ride coming in a couple of weeks. This will definite keep me occupied!
As promised, I got my hands on a buttload of games
Day of the Tentacle
Full Throttle
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
The Secret of Monkey Island
Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge
The Curse of Monkey Island eek: I can't believe this is a ScummVM game!)
Sam & Max Hit the Road
Simon the Sorcerer
Simon the Sorcerer 2
And as expected, they ALL run flawlessly! I'm so psyched. HOURS of gameplay. And I have never played the first Indy and I'm not sure about the second Simon.
WOO!
The emulator runs fine on my Nexus One, but when I try to load a game, its can't find the zip in the directory.

Because it's not looking for a zip
Extract the zips to a directory, then choose that directory when adding a game.
Sooo, is this easy to set up? Might just have to put it on my phone tonight.
Ricky - please would you share the place you got your games from?

Check your PMs. As for installation, it's a joke! Just download the apk, get the files on your SD card and you'll figure it out from there.
I think it's best to put them all in a folder on your SD card root called "ScummVM". I don't recall settings being saved until I had everything in that folder.
Thanks again, that's my evening sorted!
Thanks guys, I figured I had to unzip them. Works great!

Market Fix Must be Re-done.
Android Developers have started posting photos
of the new market rolling out soon.
http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2010/12/android-market-client-update.html
"The Android Market engineering team has been hard at work on improving the Android Market experience for users and developers. Today, I’m pleased to announce a significant update to the Android Market client. Over the next two weeks, we’ll be rolling out a new Android Market client to all devices running Android 1.6 or higher.
This new Market client introduces important features that improve merchandising of applications, streamlines the browse-to-purchase experience, and makes it easier for developers to distribute their applications.
With a focus on improving discoverability and merchandising, we’ve introduced a new carousel on the home and category screens. Users can quickly flip through the carousel to view promoted applications and immediately go to the download page for the application they want. Developers have been very active in creating great Widgets and Live Wallpapers. To make it easier for users to find their favorites, we’re introducing two new categories for Widgets and Live Wallpapers. Applications that include Widgets and Wallpapers will be automatically added to those new categories. We’ll also be adding more categories for popular applications and games in the weeks ahead. In addition, the app details page now includes Related content, which makes it easier for users to quickly find apps of similar interest."
I think it looks great and cant wait for the update.
someone's posted the apk in a nexus one thread. i assume it can be used on the gtab.

You must Re-Do Market fix
I applied the vegan b2 update and after applying the new market update, I didn't need to apply the market fix. Not sure if the b2 resolved he market fix issue, but was pleasantly suprised.
Good find. Nice UI. Fix worked well. Wish Roebeet add this to next update.

Few questions please:
1. Which link do we use? One at very top?
2. Install via Clockwork and update.zip?
3. Does it open more of the market up, or same as current market (without the system hack using Root Explorer).
4. Will it work with TnT 2.20?

1. Yes top link
2. Yes clockwork and Select zip from sd
3. I am able to see everything in market
4. Yes it will work on TnT 2.20 if the TnT you have is TnT lite.
CAUTION: Would not download this, based on my experience with TnT 2.20:
Nice interface, but not the full market. Games like Tank Hero and other apps still do not show up.
More importantly:
Seems the graphics are broken, since stars for apps are cut off and no button options to actually update the apps.
Something is wrong with this app in relation to the Gtablet and at least TnT 2.20.
Looks like I will be restoring with clockwork, since this app appears borked as far as interface.
Did you folks actually try to update or download an app?
Update 2:
OK, the tiny cut-off line above the uninstall icon bar is what you press. Just have to be precise to press it, but it works. Press it twice.
Rush,
Not sure what you're seeing but as stated in the other post, I'm able to update just fine. (clicking "my apps" lead me to the downoads screen and my available updates show up. Just updated Eagle Nest to be sure)
The game Tank Hero appears on the search list but no app when selecting
Running Vegan b3.

On TnT 2.20, the top icon is cut-off and can not see letters, just bottom few pixel rows. Uninstall icon shows up completely. Rating stars are also cut off. Only shows half of one star for all.
Tank Hero has always been missing.
added:
The cut-off icons and missing stars bugged me. Restoring with clockwork now.
Is there a way to roll back? It doesn't work so well on TnT 2.2...would prefer for a better implementation.

I had to restore with Clockwork mod to get it back. Not sure if less extreme options. Will use this as a lesson to NOT jump so quickly again. App is semi broken with TnT 2.20.

Just about to install new market fix but then I saw your post.
Thanks for info.
I've been trying to get this to work for hours, now - only worked once, then FC's every time after. And it's not an ACLs issue. Market fix / user data wipe and market fix, doesn't matter. FC's.
I won't be rushing to get this into any build, as is just doesn't work for me (yet).
How is everyone installing this, I have had zero FC and everything is installing and updating fine. I am on tnt lite 2.2
Just FC'ing on VEGAn build, TnT Lite is A-OK (except the screen glitches).
I had no problem with the market app update on TnT Lite 2.3, although I was only able to get the basic list of market apps. The tweaks to get the 'near' full market did not work for me. Then, I performed the blackout market update, and I still wasn't able to get the full market. I had to do a full reinstall of TnT Lite 2.3 (wiped user data) in order to restore the full market.
The only issue I can see is the stars, which are all the same (TnT 2.4.0 prototype). I'm considering adding this to 2.4.0, even with that glitch - seems that the good outweighs the bad.
EDIT: Nah, gotta pull it. I can live with the stars, but the cutoff text is a real mess. Must not be setup for 1024x600 screens (yet).

UPDATE - THIS PROJECT IS DEAD AND DEPRECIATED. THE PRESETS ARE STILL AVAILABLE - BUT THESE DIRECTIONS VERY LIKELY NO LONGER APPLY TO CURRENT VERSIONS OF PROJECT M. THESE PRESETS ARE ALSO COMPATIBLE WITH NESTDROP - AND AS SUCH I HAVE PROVIDED A ZIP LINK ON COMMENT # 23. GOOD LUCK!
I HAVE JUST FINISHED TESTING THE NEXT VERSION OF PROJECTM WHICH **INCLUDES** THIS PRESET PACK IN THE DOWNLOAD AVAILABILITY. EXPECT AN UPDATE ANY DAY THAT INCLUDES THIS MOD ALREADY! (VERSION 3.32) + TOUCH INTERACTIVE SETTINGS ARE FIXED IN SOON TO BE RELEASED TEST BUILD.[/COLOR
I have compiled a bunch (about 9,000) Milkdrop and ProjectM presets not included in the app itself for use in ProjectM visualizer for Android (which only comes with about 250 available stock)... Here is the quick readme and directions I wrote up... Simple install... Make sure you have "ProjectM" from the Play Store installed before attempting this.
KEEP IN MIND - This may only be good for higher end (1ghz+) devices...
ROOT ACCESS IS NOT REQUIRED!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE 4/8/2012- THANKS to XDA member and app dev "Psperl" this package will soon be available to download as a preset pack IN APP for the ProjectM visualizer- after a little bug chase, of course. So those of you that want this without the manual installation; wait a few days. - And anyone who finds the culprit .milk preset that is causing these very rare FC bugs will earn my gratitude. Please share anything you find.
UPDATE 4/6/2012- Make sure to DISABLE all interactive touch related settings in ProjectM settings - they cause Force Closes in my experience it seems after this mod. Maybe another reason we're limited to such a small selection of visuals stock... Change Preset mode is fine - the dev has been made aware of this issue and is looking into it. FIXED (for most presets)
UPDATE 4/5/2016 - Finally the developer released an update to ProjectM on the play store but has STILL not included this mega pack to date. Please continue to enjoy. Hopefully the developer releases this eventually. Continue to expect occasional crashes with this pack installed.
There are also VERY rare Force closes just in general... I believe due to an incompatible .milk file preset that is displayed randomly (we are already making this display content the app wasn't intended for- it is to be expected)... I'm trying to track that down and will release another update when I figure out which of the 9,000 isn't working right- hah. ...Till then, enjoy!

ProjectM for Android Add on Pack 2.0 - Compiled by Monsieurtalbot
Disclaimer: I in NO way take responsibility for any of the work enclosed in this zip archive...
Nor am I responsible for damage to your phone, yourself, your girlfriend, your dog, or anything that may just get in the
way of your phone's flight path across the room...
I have simply gathered these presets from various forums/torrents around the web into one place and tested them
in ProjectM for ANDROID devices. This is tested to work on HIGHER END (1ghz+) devices.
This is a compilation of various Milkdrop presets not included in the projectM app... YET (will be available in app soon hopefully!)...
DIRECTIONS-
Code:
DISABLE all interactive touch related options in ProjectM settings- touch
doesn't work with most of these and DOES cause force closes. Change
Preset mode is fine.
UnZIP the archive.
Copy the CONTENTS of the "ProjectM Add on Presets" folder
(not the folder itself) to:
"/Sdcard/ProjectM"
on your device. (THIS IS ON GALAXY SII) - (The folder may be elsewhere,
but it will be located on in the USER root of your internal SD and will work
on any device.)
Depending on whether you've downloaded presets from the app it may ask if
you want to overwrite files... Go ahead and skip them if you want... It
shouldn't matter either way.
Then start ProjectM, and give it about 10 min (sometimes more) to parse
all the new preset files (there's a lot of 'em), and VOILA -
You have about 9,000 new presets. (From the original 250 available!!) :)
****IT WILL TAKE A WHILE TO PARSE THE FILES THE FIRST TIME ONLY- Afterwards,
it starts immediately. Don't be impatient -THERE IS NO STATUS BAR.
You can hit "Menu>Browse Presets" and you will see no presets listed until
it finishes the initial start. Only then will it start visualizing something
other than "Project M"...
[COLOR="Red"]I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH - WAIT. THEY WILL SHOW UP EVENTUALLY.[/COLOR]
--IF COMING FROM A PREVIOUS VERSION--
Just go ahead and write over all previous files.
I will update this package as I find more. Enjoy. I know I am. xD
DOWNLOAD MIRROR VERSION 2.0- LINK DEAD SEE FINAL UPDATE BELOW
ALSO- Just so the community knows... ProjectM for Android is compatible with a LOT of the Milkdrop .milk files available in forums and torrent sites around the web. Do some searching, I am sure there are more that work. It would seem certain ones won't work due to shader support, but it is certainly possible to add even more. FYI.
--Changelog--
4/5/2012 - 1.0 - initial test release - 900 added presets
4/5/2012 - 2.0 - MEGA release - 9,000 more added presets
FINAL UPDATE - 6/20/2022 - Project is depreciated. Links are dead. Please see my comment linking my original 52K presets collected

Todo list: Fix occasional Force close bug... Possible touch support? I'm contacting the app dev.
**Touch support is fixed in later versions of ProjectM for Android.
Version 2.0 uploaded and ready to go. Now including over 9,000 additional visual presets for ProjectM!
Oh and just so everyone knows... Lots of people are downloading this, but no one is commenting. lol
Jeez, hit thanks or something. xD
How would you feel if I made this accessible in app like the other two preset packs? Of course, you would get to name the preset pack and write the description.
Also, there is no reason touch effects should stop working after a lot of presets are installed. I haven't tried to load this many presets though. The only reason it comes with 250 is because those are the 250 I had the patience to personally test for performance, quality, and uniqueness.
so far one of them completely quits the app. unfortunately I can't identify which one but kudos for this massive collection. I just wished the majority of them respond to the audio more

haha, I'd be honored... You can call it the "VJ Tbot Mega Pack" or something... (seeing as I'm a visual Jockey down here in South FL... seems fitting)
The only problem I saw loading so many presets was the amount of time it took to parse them all the first time loading the app post install. Took nearly 10 minutes... lol
I'm still trying to figure out which preset is crashing the system though. Gonna take a bit of sifting.
Thanks!
Oh, and I was having trouble with touch response with a LOT of the presets... So I just turned it off... Wish I could tell you why...
Thanks a lot for your hard work...

The in-app preset pack downloader shows a progress bar while initializing the presets so that will at least give people some feedback. Truth is, the operation shouldn't be so slow. Carm wrote the preset loader, which doesn't actually open the file as far as I know, so it has no business taking that long. I will try and speed it up before making your preset pack available. It might take a few days though.
If you find the bad preset pass it over and we will fix the bug that causes the crash. I bet there is more than one bad preset. I'll check out the touch response too, although that one confuses me. There is no reason that shouuld be affected by having many presets.
The thing is, since I loaded the presets manually... It didn't show a download bar- or any progress bar at all, unless I completely missed it....
Maybe there is one and I missed it, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't implement unless you download in app... which making this an official package will fix...

Yeah, there is no progress bar when projectM reads in new presets at application startup. I took a look at the slowness today. We are doing individual inserts per preset, we need to [email protected] a bulk insert and it should be a lot faster.
Ok, keep in mind also, that I copied all the .Milk files out of my Android to make this package- including the ones available in app... So we're gonna have to remove them to make this a true separate package... Just throwing that out there too.
I leave this in your capable hands, Psperl...
thanks
Yess i love this app!

Talbot, PM me your email address so I can send you a test build with 100x faster preset loading and your preset pack available as a downloadable pack. Loading is much faster but unzipping the zip file still takes a long time on device. I tried unzipping it with ES Zip Viewer and it still took a while so its not like projectM's unzipper is terrible. I also removed the xisting presets from the zip.

Hi All,
I've created this thread to share information on an Android port of the FTE QuakeWorld client called FTEDroid. (Scroll down for download links, installation, and setup instructions). The app is free to download and use and it allows you to to play Quake 1 in Singleplayer/Multiplayer modes. If you use Gamekeyboard+, you can play using the Xperia Play's slide out game controls rather than using the touchscreen. (Also... it may be able to run other versions of Quake, but I haven't got around to trying yet).
Along with the FTEDroid info, I'm sharing 2 Gamekeyboard gkp profiles that I mapped out. The first one is for the newer "Gamekeyboard +" app v. 6.0.0, that is currently available through the Google Play Store. The 2nd gkp is for the older Gamekeyboard app v 4.0.1 that I thought some of you may still have on your phones. (See the Gamekeyboard setup instructions below for the download links).
FTE developer "Spike", (who developed FTEDroid), has done an awesome job with this port. He and the FTE team all deserve a HUGE thanks for their hard work. I've tried several other ports for Quake 1 and this is the smoothest and best performing one that I've tried so far. I'm really hoping that some other Xperia Play owners will give this a shot and provide suggestions and feedback. I also think it would be a blast to try to set up some Multiplayer Quake sessions with anyone interested, so please try this out and give some feedback.
(Below are some actual screen shots of Quake 1 running on FTEDroid, taken from my Xperia Play).

DISCLAIMER:
None of these steps or suggestions should harm your phone. However, if you choose to follow the steps in this thread and install any of the linked files, then you are choosing to take full responsibility for any bad things that could happen to your phone. Please don't proceed with the below steps if you don't agree with this and are not comfortable with using root apps that modify your phone. (Gamekeyboard needs root to work with this gkp, but you can use FTEDroid with touchscreen if you're not rooted).
(IMPORTANT) You should own a copy of the Quake 1 game to run it on FTEDroid, as you need the PAK0 and PAK1 game data files for the game to work. I'm not able to supply the PAK files to you, as they are copyrighted by id Software. If you don't own the game, you can do an Internet search and buy the original Quake 1 from Steam as a direct download (it's currently about 10 USD). You can also obtain the PAK files by purchasing an original Quake 1 installation CD off of eBay, and then copying the PAK files from the CD over to your SD card. I've seen just the original Quake on eBay for as cheap as $5, but I purchased a Windows version of “Ultimate Quake” off of eBay for $25 USD (and it includes Quake 1, 2, and 3). I was able to insert the CD into my laptop, open “My Computer”, right click on the CD/DVD location, and then explore the CD's contents without needing to install the game to my computer. I located the PAK files by going into the Setup folder, then going into the ID1 folder.
-------------------------------------------------
STEP A.
Instructions to set up FTEDroid – adapted from this website: http://wiki.quakeworld.nu/FTEDroid
1. Download and install the FTEDroid apk onto your phone. (You must enable installation of “Unknown Sources” in your phone's settings to be able to install the apk). You can grab the FTEDroid apk from a download link at the above referenced wiki website: ( http://wiki.quakeworld.nu/FTEDroid )
2. Connect your Xperia Play to your computer with a USB cable. On the root of your SD card, create a file folder named fte. Then within the fte folder, create another folder named id1. (Make sure to use lower case letters, as this is important).
3. Copy the files “PAK0.PAK” and “PAK1.PAK” into the id1 folder that you created on your SD card.
4. After doing these steps, you should be able to open the FTEDroid app and run Quake on your Xperia Play. When it first starts up, choose whichever Graphic Preset you want. I've been using “Normal (Faithful)” and it works good for me.
-------------------------------------------------
STEP B.
Detailed Setup Instructions for GameKeyboard+ (version 6.0) for Quake1 using FTEDroid and the linked gkp profile: (use the alternate gkp down below if you have an older GameKeyboard app).
**If you don't own Gamekeyboard +, you can purchase it from Google Play at this link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.locnet.gamekeyboard2&hl=en
1. Download the gkp profile from this link and save it on your SD card: LINK REMOVED - as I am no longer able to provide support to this thread.
2. If this is the first time you are opening the GameKeyboard + app, then click "Not Now" when it prompts you to "skip soft keyboard and choose stand alone mode."
3. Now follow steps 1 and 2 on the GameKeyboard main setup screen to enable it as the active Input Method
4. For “Input Device”, set it to “Keyboard/Digital Gamepad”
5. For “Usage Mode,” enable the “Show Qwerty” setting, (you'll want the Qwerty keyboard to pop up later when playing the game so you can type in the Game Console). (**Also make sure that “Emulate Keyboard” is chosen).
6. Now go to "Settings" and enable "Use Advance Input". (This will likely prompt Superuser to ask you to grant permission if this is first time running GameKeyboard).
7. Scroll up a little and enable "Alternate Key Detect"
8. Now go to "Import Profile" and import the Quake1-FTEDroid3.gkp. Then go to "Save Profile" to save it, and finally go to "Load Profile" to load it - (you should be able to just load it in the future after you do these steps the first time).
9. Now scroll down and uncheck the box for "Use Hot Key" to disable it.
10. Then scroll all the way to bottom and go into "Internal Options. Make sure the boxes are checked for "8-way D-Pad," "Show Start and Select," "Show Analog Stick," "Remap Hardkey," "Show Keyboard First," and "Use Analog. "
11. *This step is important-- Go to "Custom and Test" in the main GameKeyboard setup screen... this will pop up the game controls. Then touch quickly in the very center of the virtual onscreen "Dpad." Now go to "Rotation" and select Left rotation. (Now use the back button to back out of the GameKeyboard app and go on to Step C).
-------------------------------------------------
STEP B - ALTERNATE DOWNLOAD/ SETUP INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE OLDER GAMEKEYBOARD v.4.0.1
(The left touchpad does work with this gkp, but I gave up (for now) on trying to get the right one to work. All of the other controls are mapped the same as the gkp for the newer Gamekeyboard app above).
1. Download the gkp profile from this link and save it on your SD card: LINK REMOVED - as I am no longer able to provide support to this thread
2. Now follow steps 1 and 2 on the GameKeyboard main setup screen to enable it as the active Input Method
3. Now go into settings and in "Quick Setup", choose "Xperia Play->Touchscreen"
4. In settings, scroll down to "Import Profile" and import the file "Quake1-FTEDroid-v401b.gkp" from where you saved it on your SD card. Then go to "Save Profile" to save it, and finally go to "Load Profile" to load it - (you should be able to just load it in the future after you do these steps the first time).
5. Now, scroll through these different settings to make sure they are all enabled:
__8 way D-pad
__Show Start & Select
__Show Analog Stick
__Remap Hardkey
__Go into Customize Layout and make sure that "Enable Custom Layout" is enabled
__Show Warning
__Use Advance Input
__Use Analog
6. Make sure to disable "Touch Screen Mode" by removing the check box next to it. Now use the back button to back out of the GameKeyboard app.
-------------------------------------------------
STEP C.
Last Step is to make a couple small changes within the Quake 1 game's configuration settings.
Boot up into the Quake 1 Main Game Menu, then scroll down to “Options,” and select it by pressing the X hard key. Now select "Customize Controls" and scroll down to "Attack." Now press the X hard key and it should say “Press Key” to let you change the binding setting for “Attack.” Press the X key again to map "Attack" to the actual X hard key on the phone.
**I would also advise going into the game's Video Options and increasing the Contrast. This makes the game look much better on our phones. Just Apply Settings afterwards and it should stick after you back out to the main menu again. Now just use the back button to go back to the main menu.
~~~~ THAT'S IT! You should now be able to play Quake 1 on your Xperia Play with the hard key game controls ~~~~
-------------------------------------------------
Here's how the Xperia Play Hard Keys are mapped:
“Directional Buttons”-- Up and Down are mapped to walk forward and backward, Left and right turn the character left and right.
“Left touchpad” will move the character forwards, backwards, left, and right. (should work on both gkp's)
“Right touchpad” pans the character's view around in the game -- this does NOT work with the gkp for the older GameKeyboard app v. 4.0.1. (I'm having a hard time with the touchpad controls being too sensitive and difficult for me to control. But, I mapped them out just in case others want to use them or want to try to improve on them).
“Triangle” key is mapped to "Jump/Swim Up"
“X” key is "Attack"
“Square” key is mapped to "Look Up"
“Circle” key is mapped to "Look Down"
“Select” key is mapped to "swim down"
“Start” key is mapped to switch weapon
“Left (L back shoulder)” key is mapped to Step Left
“Right (R back shoulder )” key is mapped to Step Right
“Volume up” key shows info on progress/stats within the game
“Volume down” key should toggle between the Gamekeyboard controls and the Qwerty Keyboard
“Menu” key pulls down the Game Console (it should also pull down the Qwerty Keyboard to let you type in the console if you set it to show Qwerty in the Gamekeyboard+ settings)
“Back” button brings you back to the Main Game Menu where you can load/save the game, change options, etc...
That's great! Please give some feedback after you try it out and share what you think about it. I'd also appreciate it if you could let me know if you like the way the Gamekeyboard profile is set up. I'm still pretty new to gaming on the Xperia Play and I mapped out the gpk to what seemed most comfortable for me. If there's a better way to get the controls set up for the Xperia Play, I'm open to changing things around.
Also, I'm going to try to upload an additional gkp that would work with the older Gamekeyboard v 4.0.1. I know that some people still have the older Gamekeyboard apps and would probably like to use that rather than the newer version.
As far as the mods question.... I'm not sure about other mods, but I don't think FTEDroid will run Laser Arena. I checked out your link and tried to run the game with FTEDroid tonight. It gave an error that said "Server is using protocol version 18, which is not supported by this version of FTE Quakeworld. (see the below screenshot from my phone). Maybe there's some other Android port out there that would run Laser Arena... it looks like a fun game .
I've never used Gameboard before. I see the Play site says it works on Xperia Play for Gingerbread. I'm running SlimBean, which I think runs Jellybean. Any idea if it'll still work?
I'll look into that server version thing. Maybe it can be patched to become compatible in some way.
That would be cool if you could figure out a way to patch things so it would work. :thumbup:
You probably did the same thing, but I searched the SlimBean thread, LuPus V3, and Turbo JB kernel threads... and didn't see any mention of GameKeyboard. I went ahead and posted a question on the SlimBean thread to see if anyone knows if it's compatible with that ROM and kernels. I'm currently running rooted stock 2.3.4 Gingerbread with stock kernel, and it works great with that. If no one responds and if I can get the time, I may try to install SlimBean and test it out.
Hi pWEN,
I found this post where someone said that the "Gamepad" partially works with SlimBean (see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40996551#post40996551. They said the touchpads don't work, but it sounds like the hard keys probably do. (I think they were referring to the GameKeyboard app when they said Gamepad) .
When I play Quake1 on my Xperia Play with this port...I honestly find the touchpads too difficult to use due to lack of ability to precisely control player's movements... so I prefer using the hard keys anyway.
(EDIT: I tested out the Gamekeyboard app on SlimBean ROM with Lupus kernel v.13 and also with Turbo v3.1. Both the gamepad/ hard keys and the touchpads worked with the ROM & either kernel.
Ah, okay. I really love the touchpads so I'd be a bit disappointed if I couldn't use them, but it's not a deal-breaker. Can you link me to your thread so I can subscribe to it? I'll get Gamekeyboard on and try it out.
I dunno what ROM you're currently running, but SlimBean is pretty cool. It's got launcher and ROM customization built in, including theme support. Really speeds up the phone, too. Only issue seems to be that it requires an SD card to install some OS files to, which is irritating since the OS itself is only like 26 mb. I used the Lupus kernel, which is really nice, as it has TWRP custom recovery built into it. If you need any files, just let me know, took some detective work for me to find them all, but I've got them. I used this install guide, which was way more helpful than the one in the SlimBean thread.
SlimBean does look cool and I'll probably try it out soon. Thanks for the install guide link. I'm just currently running stock rooted 2.3.4. (Edit: I used Titanium Backup Pro to debloat the stock ROM... so it's not just straight stock now).
The touchpads are cool, but I'm hoping you'll like Quake with just the regular controls. If GameKeyboard doesn't work, you should be able to get a refund if you go back into the Play Store within 2 hours of buying it... (I just read on the news where Google increased the refund time window).
(Confirmed the the touchpads do work with Gamekeyboard using Lupus v13 or Turbo v3.1 with SlimBean ROM).
I'm not sure if this is exactly what you want, but the web link for this thread is:
LOL... It didn't make sense to me that you would need the link to this Quake thread that I created... but I just wasn't sure what you meant. Sorry about that.
I asked about Gamekeyboard in the SlimBean thread: here.
pWEN,
I went ahead and flashed SlimBean and LuPuS JellyBean v13 Kernel 720p version ... (I also tried Turbo Kernel v3.1 ).
I can confirm that the phone's hard keys and the touchpads BOTH WORK using GameKeyboard with SlimBean and either one of these kernels. I also tested out the Multiplayer mode while running SlimBean and was able to connect into it (I attached a few screenshots below).
As far as the Quake game performance with SlimBean, I found that the game didn't run as smooth as it does on stock 2.3.4 GB. On Quake, the Turbo Kernel seemed to perform pretty good overall without needing to overclock... but with Lupus on Quake, it was really laggy and I had to overclock up to 1209 MHz to get it to stop lagging. (Using both kernels... I also tried to play one of my current favorite games (Aralon Sword & Shadow). With the Lupus kernel, Aralon really struggled and froze on me anytime I would toggle the Gamekeyboard controls while playing the game...even with the overclocking up to 1401 MHz. Aralon seemed to run smoother with Turbo kernel, but the game froze on me after playing it for a while. (Aralon runs smooth with very few hiccups running stock 2.3.4 GB/ stock kernel).
I'm pretty new to the Xperia Play and I'm not a developer (just an android enthusiast ). I'm not 100% sure what the best set up is for gaming on this device. I've read some thread posts, (example here: from darkharbinger81), where others report that with this device, Gingerbread seems to work better than JellyBean for gaming. So for now, I'll probably just stick with debloated 2.3.4 GB.
(Edit: I've played with SlimBean some more this evening and I'm really impressed with the ROM itself. It's put together really well and has lots of great features. I found the "Performance" settings where you can overclock and change Governors/Schedulers without even needing an app like SetCPU. If I wasn't using my Xperia Play soley for gaming, then I would seriously consider sticking with the SlimBean ROM).
What settings did you change to overclock in SlimBean? I've never messed around with that before, but I think it might be a good idea (especially since Minecraft runs more laggy on SB than it does on stock).
Pretty cool that online multiplayer works. Have you tried adding bots? Is such a thing possible here?
I seem to remember someone ported Quake 3 Arena to Android. Ever tried that?
You can access the overclock/governor/scheduler settings in SlimBean by going to phone's main settings menu, then "Performance," then they should be somewhere in there. :fingers-crossed: (I flashed back to stock GB last night and don't remember exactly where everything was). You probably know this, but If you decide to overclock, just be really cautious as it can damage your phone if you aren't careful. Here's a link to an overclocking discussion for our phone that gives some tips.
From what I can tell, Quake1 on FTEDroid doesn't have bots and I'm not sure if they can be added. I see in your profile that you have a background in game development and if you want to get some technical details on FTEDroid, I think that Spike (the FTEDroid developer) and the other FTE dev. team would be willing to chat with you on their FTE IRC channel. I chatted with him and a couple others on there briefly and they were nice and seemed open to discussion.
I think the Quake3 port you're talking about is Zeus Arena. It looks like it was pulled off of Google Play a while back due to development issues/terms of use issue... (I'm not sure what that means). My friend has it on his Xperia Play and I've played both Quake2 and Quake3 on it in Singleplayer mode. The game runs and looks great, but I had trouble using the controls well enough to effectively control the player. (Maybe I just need some more practice).
Yes, I'll definitely have to look for Zeus Arena!
Thanks for the link to the overclocking thread. I'll have to take a look later. I tried running FTE with Quake 1 as-is, and it's a bit laggy (and I'll definitely need that Gamekeyboard app). I've been trying to get on top of this Quake stuff, but all of my free time has been absorbed by work lately. So I'm trying to get as much information on it as I can, while I can.
I looked into bots, but so far haven't found a tutorial on setting them up with FTE (Android or no). A lot of this Quake stuff is as old as the game itself, but I feel my Google-fu is strong, so I'm sure I'll dig it up eventually. Omicron bots seem to be the best choice going by the forum debates.
Another question for you: You only mention Quake 1 on here, but shouldn't the mission packs work as well? I copied the pak0.pak files from the hipnotic and rogue folders to sister locations at the same level as the id1 folder, just as it shows up in my install directory (I got all of the Quake games through Steam). Not sure how to tell if they work or how I'd access them, though! And have you tried Quake 2 and its mission packs with this yet?
I plan to test out Quake 2 on FTEDroid soon. It'll be great if it works.
I don't own mission packs for any of the Quake versions, so I can't test things out, but I'm wondering if you could just use a file explorer and temporarily cut the Quake 1 pak files out of sdcard/fte/id1 and place them in a different folder... then copy the mission pak files into sdcard/fte/id1. It would be a bit of a pain to move things around like that... but I wonder if it would let you run the mission packs. That's how I got Laser Arena to boot (though it didn't run because of the server issue).
Ah okay, cool. I started a thread over on QuakeOne with a bunch of questions for them about this. Here's the link!
Also, I set up overclocking on my phone. Didn't make Minecraft less laggy (SlimBean issue, I guess) until I turned off fancy graphics, but what can you do. lol
Too bad that the overclocking didn't help much. Maybe there's some other tweaks you can do to improve performance with SlimBean...maybe try out Turbo Kernel, as (IMO) it seemed to perform with less lagging when I tried it. And thanks man for starting that thread on Quake One Forums. I just don't possess the knowledge to even know what to ask Spike and the others.
I used the info from the QuakeOne discussion and loaded Quake2 and Quake 3 into FTEDroid. They both started up and I was able to connect with some limited servers... but more testing and playing around with it is needed to see if the games would be playable on our phones. Also, the GameKeyboard profile that I mapped out for Quake1 didn't work with the games that did connect... so we'd have to play around with Gamekeyboard and the config files to see if the controls could be remapped for each game. I took some screenshots of all of the different games that FTE says it can run (see content below). I don't think all of them work on the Xperia Play, but I'm blown away by the list of games.
Even if none of the other games work well for our phones... hopefully other Xperia Play owners can still have fun playing Quake1 in Singleplayer mode with FTEDroid. :good: I need to get into bed so I can get up for work tomorrow... but thanks again for your time with this considering your busy work schedule.
Hello. I have not tried to play Quake on the Xperia Play in over 1 1/2 years, but these instructions worked for me when I last tried them.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to help with troubleshooting as I'm no longer using this device.
I've noticed a few games from the Humble Bundles that don't work.
So far, these games crash on startup:
- Avadon: The Black Fortress ( EDIT: I did get this one to work by downloading the apk from the humble bundle website. When I do it from the Humble app, it crashes)
- Five Nights at Freddy's
- Ticket to Ride
- Anomaly Korea
- The Bards Tale
Could this be a problem with 64 bit? Or Lollipop itself?
I've tried Surgeon Sim and Leos fortune. Both of which are working great
I've had problems with some Humble Bundle Games. It could be for a number of reasons. Remember, it's no different to finding software on windows doesn't work on new versions for <insert reason here>. It could be the runtime switch from Dalvik to ART or just the way it's compiled. I'm not 100% sure if all the major Android releases are backwards compatible. Lollipop is certainly a massive overhaul compare to some previous launches.
I'm guessing broken apps will need to be re-built against Android 5.0. I'm sure this'll happen over time to the import and oft-used apps.
I've launched games from Humbled Bundle no problem, I think Beats Hazard (sp?) flagged an error saying there might be a problem, but it actually ran okay. I can't remember which game it was, but it seemed to fire up and then just disappeared. CTD.
Add Anomaly Korea and The Bard's tale to the list
I suspect this is going to be a 64 bit issue. If it uses NDK, then it probably needs to be rebuilt for 64 bit.
Added. Do you use the Humble app or do you get the .apk from the website and install manually? It does seem to make a difference with some games
The app. I'll give the website a try
according to the Google Play release note, there is a patch for Nexus 9 since 28th of November :
What's New
- Fix incompatibility with Nexus 9
I hope this patch to come soon via Humble App updater...
