[Q] Unroot to update, without reflash ? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I need some help with the transformer firmware upgrade. My tf is rooted, and therefor the update process fails with a orange ! android.I red that an unroot is absolutely nescessary in order to upgrade, but I am looking for a way to do it without refashing and then reinstalling everything. From what I understand both methods listed here: http://is.gd/nGRo5s implie a complete reinstall.
So,any way to get the update without re-installing anything ?
Thanks.

There is a way to flash the update without reinstalling everything, but you need to change your recovery.
A non-stock recovery will let you flash a modified OTA that will let you keep root. Or even better, just flash a rooted stock image.

Great !
Do you have a link to the modified recovery I should use and one to the modified FOTA ?
I assume I would be doing this using the update.zip function of the modded recovery ?
Thanks for the help !

Roach has a modded version of Clockworkmod
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1213723
I'm not sure anyone has posted a 8.6.5.13 rom yet.
Edit: the OTA will break root since it will flash a secure boot.img.
---------- Post added at 08:16 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:59 PM ----------
Actually, if you have the stock recovery, there will be a few extra steps to flash CWM.
You can 1) use nvflash and modify the commands so that it doesn't erase everything or 2) use terminal and flash the recovery through the staging partition.
Then, after you have a working recovery, you can modify the OTA to flash without breaking root or giving you a secure boot.img.
---------- Post added at 08:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:16 PM ----------
I think terminal will be easier since Roach packed up his recovery as a blob. What a guy!
1) download the zip file from Roach's thread
2) unzip it and you'll find a file called recoveryblob- save this to your external SD card
3) use adb or terminal and type
Code:
su
dd if=/Removable/MicroSD/recoveryblob of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4
reboot
The last piece is zero-pee-four. Be sure to get this right or else you'll be gravely inconvenienced. Your TF will reboot and CWM ala Roach will flash. You'll see a turquoise progress bar and then your TF will reboot.
edit again: daoist posted this already http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1281161
once you have clockworkmod, go to his thread and flash via clockworkmod.
Happy Flashing!

Well, that's a precise answer ! I'll do the flah soon and will update this thread. Thanks for the help !

Hi,
is that you get the update notification?
For me (i did'nt have the notification), I did it: being in stock 4.2.1 ROM, s-off, recovery custom, and root, so I changed cid with the fastboot command: fastboot oem writecid HTC__032 (HTC__032 = East Europe, me I had a French HTC__203 cid). Then reflash version 4.1.2 of stock recovery, reboot the phone, check the update, and normally you could do it!
For finalize, back in the bootloader to restore your original cid and reflash a custom recovery if you want !
Good luck!
Well i got the update notification but i cant update to 4.2 because i dont know how to restore the stock recovery. if its any help im running 4.1.2 and im on cricket which is the PLCCL variant

Download the OTA.zip, you'll find it in download folder.
Copy it to your PC. Inside the OTA.zip you'll find a firmware.zip, unzip this on your PC.
Then open the firmware.zip and you will find a recovery.img inside. Unzip this recovery.img.
Now put the recovery.img into your fastboot folder (in your PC) and flash it with the cmd:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
If all went well, flash back cwm recovery, make a backup and upload it for us

So i flashed the stock recovery for 4.1 and i attempted to flash the 4.2 update and it says
Device_CW_Install: No CW files. Skip cw installation.
(going to skip writing out what all the update stuff said and ill just show you what it sayed at the end when it failed)
Removing unneeded files...
Patching /system or /data files...

Are you sure, that your system is totally stock (odexed, no apps or something else removed)?

if you're cricket than do this
first thing you need to do is flash a working clockworkmod recovery
then download this rar file and extract it somewhere and place it in your CWM restore directory
https://db.tt/C59wTTqK
once it's restored
place this file on the root of your sdcard and reboot into your bootloader,
it will search and find it just follow the directions on your screen to apply it. then reboot into your OS and except all further updates

profit!

absurdly stupid move by me.3113wTWRPv2.6.3.0 only left

I was doing fine with my PAC-4.3.1. I backed everything up. Then I erased all ... yep... no OS. And trying to install something like the MicroDelta-P3110-4.2.2xxx... says its unable to open the zip file. So I probably messed up my root also.
I have very limited access to XP. I run Linux. Ubuntu, Debian ... but I can not find a working way to salvage my tab2.7 this way. odin for XP was how I got to 4.1.2.
I believe I need help in knowing what is the actual correct next step. I read the forum and have failed so far. So would someone be able to point me to the correct link knowing my situation?
I think I was on 4.2.2. Then PAC 4.3.1
I used to have Philz installed. Recently went to TWRP because I was getting very unreliable bootloops and switching helped in the short term...
try flashing PhilZ Touch using adb sideload, reboot into philz touch and try the rom again.... maybe flash the rom using sideload

Now what do you mean by you erased everything? Even wiping system, user data and both caches won't break root. Was there something else you wiped that you probably shouldn't have? What you could do is set up a virtual machine for XP, or even dual boot. It's a little time consuming, but in the end I do believe it would be worth it If you can't even flash a zip I don't really know what else you could do. Hopefully someone else will chime in with a less exhausting solution. But dual booting or using a virtual machine is certainly option. That way you can easily odin back to stock.

I thought about that, but he said he broke root and can't flash a zip? Would sideloading work around that?
Sure Sideload should work, i think root is not broken (can access to storage be broken in recovery? i don´t think so ) - maybe bad download of the rom or he can only flash signed zip´s ? maybe he can try disable zip-verification (?)

a recovery wouldn´t make a rom bootlooping i think he forgot to wipe something.
i never had a bootloop or other strange problems on a working rom! NEVER!
What i am doing:
wipe cache partition
wipe dalvic cache
format /system
wipe data factory reset (on PhilZ Touch "Clean to install a new Rom")
flash rom
reboot
if it´s working i reboot into recovery again
flash gapps
flash NEXT Kernel
flash Proprietary files for NEXT Kernel
reboot again
(sometimes flashing NEXT Kernel + Proprietary files directly after the rom before 1st boot - only if i am on Dual-Boot)

wipe cache partition
wipe dalvic cache

wipe data factory reset
First flash MicroDelta-P3110-JB-4.1.2-P3110XXDME3-signed.zip
directly after that flash MicroDelta-P3113-JB-4.1.2-P3113XXDME3-signed.zip

Android Debug Bridge version 1.0.31
$ adb sideload philz_touch_5.15.0-p3110-blackhawk.zip
$ adb sideload blackhawk-next-kernel-2.1.5-p31xx-miui.zip
**probably usless step but I wanted to see if it worked and it installed wo errors***
$ adb sideload miui_3.10.25_p3110_beta2.zip
$ adb sideload proprietary-vendor-samsung.zip
** yes, I have no idea what I am doing because this probably is part of another thread.... but it is ok**
But now that I can easily push ROMs over... I am going to go crazy installing a bunch of similar 4.3.1 roms.
THANKS FOR THE HELP!
I ended up on PAC MAN 4.3.1. at least for now

Rooted Nexus 5 out of box, recently updated 4.4.2 OTA and now root is gone

When I open up superSU, it says:
There is no SU binary installed, and super SU cannot install it.
If you just upgraded to android 4.3, you need to manually re-root.
If I turn the Nexus on in recovery mode, it still says it's unlocked.
So at this point, is there anything I can do to restore root status without factory resetting? I made a backup with titanium backup but it was a while ago so I would rather not use it if there is another way.
I've read somewhere that rooting it should mean OTA updates should no longer work but somehow, it still went through and I updated it without thinking too much.
Download the supersu zip file and flash it in recovery.

I don't have twrp or cwm installed yet. Which one is generally simpler/easier to install/use?
So I installed goomanager and tried to install twrp, but it all goes back to the same problem which was that I am now not in root mode anymore.
Also what do you mean by flashing the zip? Which options am I supposed to use?

I've been using TWRP with no problem and it's been awhile since I've used CWM. I've never used a toolkit or flashify but with adb it would probably take a couple minutes max to flash either one.

Sorry I've never done that. I guess you could adb push superuser.apk to the system but you still need the binary wherever that goes. Honestly I would just flash TWRP using adb and use TWRP to flash the SuperSu zip.

No.You do not need root to install a custom recovery. You need an unlocked bootloader. How did you get root in the first place? You must have used a toolkit of some kind? Use it again? I've only every used adb so I can't help with any toolkits but lots of people use them, I guess!
Download the latest TWRP or CWM recovery. Put it in the same folder as your adb and fastboot files. Open a command prompt and type adb reboot bootloader(you have to make sure developer settings are enabled and USB debugging is checked). Then flash recovery using fastboot by typing fastboot flash recovery name_of_file.img and then you can flash the supersu zip file.

I've tried sideloading both twrp and the superSU.zip, and they fail to verify and the installation aborts =\

[ROM] SU4TL-44 100% Stock

SU4TL-44 Stock Image for XT1254: https://mega.nz/#!v4QWiITb!_0jWWzE4KWCEgT__C36rYe0vaTzGKcEFsZm0vvBtLBg
Flash with TWRP.
This package will flash every image in the SU4TL-44 firmware package except for recovery. It should bring your phone to almost 100% stock. The only image that is not included is the recovery image, because that would overwrite TWRP. If you need the stock recovery, revert to stock by following section 0 of my guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-turbo/general/guide-how-to-unlock-bootloader-install-t3292684.
Yes, it does include modems.
No, it will not re-lock your bootloader.
No, it won't erase your data, but you should do a factory reset in TWRP after flashing this. You might be able to get away without it if you're coming from a modified stock rom, but if you leave out the factory reset after coming from a CM-based rom, you're gonna have a bad time.
Thanks to @firstEncounter for letting me incorporate his flashable zip into this package.
Will have to download this later. Looked to go back to stock and wait for mm to come out.

No it won't relock boot loader just installed it you will not be rooted and twrp will ask you if you want to root before reboot if you click no and want to at a later point just go back into boot loader by doing vol down power combo from power off and select open boot loader and when you click to reboot it will ask you again if you want to root then you can just slide to install

I've never tried to install an image via ADB before. Did you mount the image elsewhere and extract the system folder, and then ADB-pushed that? If not, your bootloop is probably because there's just a big, unextracted system.img on your system partition, and not the actual files within it. Why not just flash it with TWRP? When I tested it, I flashed it via TWRP and it worked.
If you really don't want to flash it via TWRP for some reason, you can extract the system.img from the zip and flash it using fastboot (fastboot flash system system.img).
EDIT: Oh wait, I think I understand now. You just used ADB to put the zip on your phone, and then you installed it with TWRP. Got it. Well my next question is why use ADB at all? Why not just plug in your phone while it's booted into TWRP and use the native MTP to transfer files?

This package only flashes /system. CM flashes its own boot.img, which is why this isn't working for you. I'll try to find some time tonight to add in the other images in the stock firmware to this package. Sorry about that.

I'm not entirely sure how to write a script to flash those in TWRP. For boot and system, it's easy because the devices that they are flashed to match the names used by fastboot. Bootloader and radio seem to be a little different though. When I list the contents of /dev/block/bootdevice/by-name, there is no "motoboot" or "radio," which is what fastboot uses when you flash these. I do see "aboot" and "modem," and I'm pretty sure those are the targets I'm looking for, but I don't want to go flashing things unless I'm 100% sure. Since there's not a huge demand for figuring that out, and boot + system is all people will need in 99% of cases, I'll leave them out. Thanks though!

Can anybody help me i need a boot image backup from your working nougat rom backup

Do you need a TWRP image or a odin flashable image?
---------- Post added at 06:44 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:27 AM ----------
Was just taking a look on my drive and apparently I don't have any Nouget stuff anymore. There is this though, instead of downloading the entire ROM, if you just flash the bootloader part and not the recovery since you already have it, I think it has the boot image in there https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...-j701f-core-nxt-exynos-7870/recovery-t3693009
By the way, if you have the original ROM still, or a stock one on the drive, you can look in the archive and pull out the boot.img and flash it with TWRP just like that. You don't need to get it from someone else's TWRP backup necessarily. It should be do-able with the above linked file as well. You need to select 'image' instead of 'zip' in TWRP when you go to the restore section.

Do you need a TWRP image or a odin flashable image?
