[Q] How easy is it to revert back to stock ROM? - HTC Sensation

I am thinking of taking the plunge and flashing a custom ROM on my Sensation and have read a lot on how to do it, but had a question from those that have. If before flash a new ROM I make a backup of my current stock ROM with clockworkmod, is it really as easy as going back into clockworkmod and restoring if I want to go back to "factory" settings?
I use my phone for work so don't want to be in a position where I need to spend hours trying to get it back if it does not work. I understand that things happen, but in an ideal world it seems as if it would be easy but wanted to hear it from people that have done this before.
Thank you for your time.

Very easy in fact. If you backup, then you go into the same menu in CWM, and press restore

And will put it right back to how it was? Have you done this before? Does it matter if it is a stock ROM or not? It almost just sounds too easy Thank you.

Many times I've just done what I said in the first post. It doesn't matter It was made so if something goes wrong, or you regret your flashed rom, then you can go back(if you backed up).
I always charge till 100 % before backing up or restoring

Well, I took the plunge. So for so good. It really it simple. Thanks for the help.

Your welcome, I hope everything goes well !

Q? return to stock error, return still possible?

I went to my backup rom, unrooted, removed all apps...and duuuh realize that my backup was of eagle bloods rom, and it read eagle blood in the firmware (in the about menu) and not stock LOL
so I got turned down on the return (figured Id wait for the sensation), anyway does anyone have a stock rom, untouched somewhere? and also can I return the phone to any tmobile, or does it have to be to the store I bought it from...my local store is small, so I bet if I try and go back now they will just remember me lol
thanks

If you look at the development section you will find the rooted stock version. You can flash that and then unroot using superoneclick.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
yeah I tried that rom, I need one that is untouched no apps installed, none deleted
the guys at my store went through it like crazy, in my attempt to return it lol
might keep it though, as I just installed the newest cm7 kang build and it basically cleaned up all the issues I was having on my device
It's very easy to return to stock.
Unroot using super one click root
Flash the stock recovery using NVFlash
Hold down the vol - / power and it'll restore.
thats EXACTLY what I did,
but when the guy at the store pulled up the "about" settings, it read the "eagle" rom in the firmware for some reason
and all the stock apps were all gone too, only the ones that were included in the eagle rom that I had flashed, and subsequently wiped a few days ago remained
I know its my bad that I didnt nandroid the stock rom when I opened up the phone for the first time
just was hopping someone had a stock backup WITHOUT titanium or busybody included
Hmm that's strange,
That's what I've been doing with CM7 and it works just fine.
I guess you could try these steps
1. Download stock nandroid backup Stock nandroid
2. Restore with clockworkmod recovery, boot up and then shut down.
3. Flash stock recovery.
4. Press vol - / power to do a factory restore.
5. Boot up and skip the Google login and then unroot.
6. Shutdown and Pres vol - / power to do a factory restore again.
If you read the g2x forum you'll see they have a thread with the tmo bloatware apks

i took mine in yesterday with phone jack in with CM7 nightly on mine to the tmobile i bough it at and they didnt even bother to power it on to look at it. i think it all depends on who's helping you and whether you get lucky or not. i made the guy throw in a free screen protector since mine was on the phone i returned. he let me take the battery from the old phone but he never took the one out of the box so now i have a new battery laying around. i guess you just have to get lucky.

Wrong! Nandroid the stock rooted rom. Flash stock recovery. Unroot. Remove rooted apps. Done. Factory reset to be sure.

yeah the dude who helped was being a serious tard, lol
he acted like he had NEVER heard of any issues, it was the "best " phone he had ever used, blah blah blah lol, all the tech support forums are just "rumors" not real users .....
I felt like I was at a used car dealership lol
I almost cancelled my contract right then and there, but I figured it was my bad for not checking the firmware, and not backing up my own rom from jump
does anyone know if I can return it to another store, by chance? or do I have to go to the same store....all the guys know me, since its a small local store

Its all laid out a couple different ways in the development forums. You just have to do a little research and you will find all the instructions you will need.

[Q] I must be doing it wrong. Is there an easier way to get back to stock?

Hey, guys-
I'm unrooted and running stock Android. I have all of my settings and apps exactly how I like them right now.
In the past, I've flashed different ROMs and Kernels. When I get tired/frustrated with them and want to revert back to stock, I usually just do the 1 click revert back to factory settings. When you do that, it... well.. erases anything and everything in order to get back to factory settings.
Nothing is broke. I just don't want to delete my SD card contents and lose root. I just want to revert to the stock kernel and ROM from another ROM and kernel.
I was wondering if there's an easier way to get back to my current settings on the stock Android and Kernels WITHOUT using the 1 click revert back to factory method? If there is, could you PLEASE tell me how to do it EXACTLY? I say that because sometimes people on here give instructions that are clear as mud. Thanks!
Factory reset does NOT restore kernels or roms. It simply wipes user data.
You're confused. What you really want is a nandroid back up
If you have ROM Manager installed, open it up and go to "Download ROM". At the very bottom of the list, there should be a selection that says "Stock Images". I'm pretty sure you can use that to get back to stock. I'M NOT POSITIVE, I've never tried it before. It may unroot your phone/get rid of clockwork mod recovery. Just a suggestion

That is to relock your bootloader. Just flash a stock rom in recovery with a full wipe, You'll be unrooted.
Stock roms can be found here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664
It's also wise to keep your content copied on a folder on your comp. 5 minutes of copying back and you got it all back. If you got all that sorted what you should always do is once you've got a stock rooted rom, run a nandroid backup/backup restore from CWM before you flash new roms / kernels.

Nandroid Backup without Rebooting

Found this on XDA's main page.... was wondering if a couple devs could check it out and see if it will work on the Atrix2 ICS Leak....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1620255
This opens up the ability to create Nandroid Backups without the need to reboot into Custom Recovery....
Sounds pretty convenient to me!!!

I read about that too. I don't see why it wouldn't work... (EDIT: but, without further due diligence and investigation into the matter I would strongly advise against it - and see Jim's posts below ) ...what's the worst that could happen?
It won't work right on our phone as is.
We might be able to modify it, but that might be more of a pain than just using CWM/bootmenu to grab a quick nandroid.
Just curious.... but why will it not work in the current state with our phones?
The fstab will need to changed, and we can NOT backup boot or recovery and such. and things like /preinstall and other things like are quite different on our phone. There will need to be a good bit of changes made. Just look at what it took to make safestrap and bootmenu work for our phone, and those both came from phones that were much closer to ours.
Ok. Thanks Jim!

I was gonna say the same thing actually, but I figured I'd go the other route But, what's the worst that could happen is that it just wouldn't work..
Figured a quick request to a Dev would take me less time then running a nandroid backup..... flashing the online backup... then discovering I need to restore back.... lol

Well the worst would be a brick... if you backup and restore boot, it may not reinstall the signatures, which is why we don't back that up now, and only really backup /system and /data and sdcard, if you really want to.. oh and webtop in bootmenu gets backed up too now.

Right, if you try to restore... wait, boot.img?!? Who would try to do that given our bootloader situation anyway?.. But, it would probably not even backup properly in the first place if the fstabs aren't pointing to the right place... ok.. this is getting too far off of and/or too deep into the topic.. or.. thanks, jim..

Well, just take a look at that post from the OG subject that is linked here. It shows it backing up /boot, and you can back it up all day long, but restoring it has proven to brick phones, trust me I have done it with the A2 (restoring /boot with a backup, and bricking).

Getting an S3 next week, how important is it to backup your IMEI?

I see some topics about it. I plan to unlock and root as soon as I get the phone.
Just how important is it to backup this, and anything else I should backup too?
its pretty important.. nothing can go wrong by backing it up. once you root it back it up just in case so your new phone wont be a $600 paperweight!
When you install CWM do a nandroid backup of stock

That's good to hear. I figured I'd make stock backup too. Having stock rooted won't mess it up I'd presume? Is there an app that does it too?
I have flashed all the roms available, including CM10 and had no trouble with IMEI. Always good to backup though. There's a fairly simple process in the CM10 OP.

once rooted and you have installed clockwork mod recovery or TWRP you can make a back up of your whole phone..this will not mess up anything. You can get these two recoveries by using the ez recovery app on google play....... To make a backup in the recovery it will say backup and restore as one of the main options

O my bad you have to be rooted in order to run the operation through a terminal emulator app
If you poke around in development there's one for Mac/Ubuntu (I think Ubuntu anyway) that does root and clockwork recovery from your computer, and that's what I use because it's pretty quick and easy.
If it can ever be important you should make a backup of it though. Since fixing things is always a process, having comprehensive resources for it can trim a lot of time.
Using QPST it only took me like 5 minutes to back mine up. Really simple. Then I put a copy of the file on my HD, on my phone's SD card and one on my Google drive. Now I'm sure I can't lose it. LoL they are small files too. Under 500kb
--Sent from GlaDos baked potato
I’d like to look further into it.
I lost my IMEI and other connection data with a bad flash of a CM10 nightly. I had to do a lot of stuff, including manually typing in my IMEI using QPST and then returning my phone to the Verizon store for them to do some factory-reset style stuff to it before I got connectivity again. (Even though I was bone-stock with a re-locked bootloader they still knew I had rooted and messed with the kernel and other stuff, btw). And its not completely correct, even though I am in my home service area I constantly have the flashing grey triangle that says I am doing international roaming. Pretty weird. So long story short, backup IMEI and everything else BEFORE FLASHING ANYTHING.

That's good, I'll probably put it on my Skydrive then too.
Is there a high chance of losing it on flashing though? I just plan to flash CM10 really.

Yes, there's always a chance you'll loose it. Better to be safe, than sorry. It only takes a couple of minutes to backup and it may save you the hassle of an exchange.
I backed up the IMEI using this method ( QPST) http://rootzwiki.com/topic/32397-tutorial-imei-backup-nv-with-qpst-us-variants/ It doesn't say should i reset the modems to mtp-adb?
it doesn't say and i would have posted it there but the guy at the end of the thread seems like he is all pissy if you ask any questions. thanks guys

[Q] Whats the best way to...

Ok so Ive decided to head back to stock. While all this is flashing and what not is fun and maybe invigorating to some, its gotten me worried that my phone is going to explode in my hand or something. I just dont want to cause any problems with my new shiny phone. Can you tell my noob-ness level? lol So Im running CR 2.5 and LiquidSmooth before that. While there is nothing wrong with CR im just too nervous every time I see something unusual.
I have a nandroid BU of Stock with root and unlocked BL and CWM flashed. If I format system, Format data, Format cache and restore that nandroid. Im back to stock ROM and everything with root, correct?
If I choose to unroot, do I have to use ODIN, or is there another way? I pretty much want to go back to getting OTAs but dont want to loose all my Apps. Can I stay rooted, then lock the bootloader and accept OTAs?
Now I also have BUs in TB and MYBackup. If I choose to unroot how do I get my backups restored if Im not rooted?
What are my best options? Suggestions, links are greatly appreciated?
Anybody?

Yes me! So first of all there are the OTA's in the development section I believe. And you can just flash the OTA to your rooted device description is in the forum. Second If you would want to get back to stock non rooted the best way would be to ODIN also don't forget to reset the flash counter if you needed to return the device to verizon or anything.
Also you can find the latest stock rooted in the development section with all OTA's included. I wouldn't un-root if I were you just because of all the good stuff that is possible with root.
And I just want to tell you that your pretty safe your phone won't explode or anything like that. just make sure you follow the instruction correctly and your phone shouldn't over-heat or drain the battery so on. And even if something drain's the battery check the section where you downloaded the ROM from and you will find the solution easy as 1-2-3.
Use the little search button upper corner on the right hand side if you have any questions in the verizon GS3 section of course and you will find everything you need.
If I have a little time later today, I will link you the OTA's and the latest stock-rooted ROM if you can't find it.
