Any good Epic-fitted car mounts out there w/ power? Ideally dash or lighter mounted, as I'm not a fan of window mounts.

People speak highly of ProClip's stuff. I've never had one personally so I can't comment and their model for the Epic isn't out yet. The only one (w/power) for US models they have so far is for the Vibrant. Take a look at that and you'll get a sense for how the Epic's will be. It's not a cheap solution by any means as you have to buy both the mount for your specific car as well as the holder for your device, but it is dash-mounted like you mentioned.

Personally I'm just using a cupholder-based Bracketron and plugging my power and 3.5mm wires in manually each time. Not the most elegant solution, but it works for now. And I'm not a big fan of the official Samsung model that was floated around (and later pulled) as I much prefer portrait mode.
This is something I want as well, I have this crazy idea that may put this to work. Currently I have a cup holder and the idea is to combine this to a touchstone charger and if I have a bluetooth radio everything will be wireless. I'm just waiting for an extra touch stone to play with.

I made a lighter-outlet mount out of a free car charger, some stiff wire and super-glue. It's just a prototype for now, but when I've got some free time (college sucks) I'll probably make a write-up about how to make a nice looking one
To me, car mounts are an essential part of owning an android phone.
I've been thinking about making one myself.
but the sheer design of the phone makes it almost impossible for a clean mount.

I'm beginning to think that they weren't thinking in terms of accessories when designing this phone.
but until i or someone else can think of a clean mount, i'll stick with this one from ebay.

No, wouldn't be that hard to do. At the top you have the microSD power plug that the phone slides up into, and then you push back on the bottom and have a small spring loaded latch clip into the thumbnail hole on the bottom of the backplate of the phone. That would probably hold it in plenty secure and if done right would allow the screen to slide off to the side as well.
Okay, I know what you guys are thinking, "not another dock thread!!!"
BUT, I've searched for a very long time on XDA and google with no luck so I'm posting this as my absolute last resort.
Heres my situation: I need a dock much like this one:
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
BUT, the only reason that one wouldn't work for me is because it doesn't look stable enough. By that, I mean there's really no support holding the phone in place other than the micro USB connection.
My main concern is that when I shift gears, I tend to shift hard (I can't help it)
and I'm afraid that if i get that dock, the force that comes along after i shift will knock the phone right out of the cradle. SO i'm looking for something that has that same exact design BUT with more support (like clips on the side or something).
My car has a compartment in the dash where i will be mounting it which looks like this:
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
I cannot get a windshield mount because mounting anything on the windshield in Minnesota is considered illegal.
So PLEASE, if anyone has seen anything that fits my description online, please let me know! I would really appreciate it!
Thanks!!!!!
So no one has any suggestions huh? Guess I'm SOL
I can't recall if they have exactly what you're looking for but try Arkon. Just google their name as they have every style imaginable I think and everyone I've ever had is stable. I'm actually using their cig lighter mount now and couldn't be happier, and it's completely stable.

Panavise sells a mount that looks like it attaches under the center-right a/c vent. With Panavise you buy the custom mount, then you get a clamp for whatever device you want to attach. I have one with a suction cup mount on it - essentially a smooth plastic disc - from my old GPS. I can attach any suction cup mount to it and change it quickly or remove it altogether. I just used 3m foam double-face tape to attach it and it is pretty solid.
They might have other mounting points (i just did a quick search on le goog) for your car also. They have one for just about every car made and they're all custom fit. Mine was originally from my Jetta and I hammered it flat and redrilled the holes for my Volvo when I changed cars.
ProClip (brodit) makes a custom-fit HTC Vision (G2/Desire Z) dock which can fit a variety of their car mounts (window, dash, vent, etc):

Has anyone seen a car dock available yet? I'm coming in from a long line of WinMo phones from the Tilt2 all the way back and even on Ebay I've been able to find SOMETHING. So far either for the DesireHD or the Inspire it's a little barren. Anyone seen anything useful? I don't need speakerphone or anything like that, just charging.
I installed this under the driver's seat for my tilt2 and now use it with the inspire.

Let us know how his works when you get it. I don't think it is an official HTC doc as I cannot find it on their website. I am interested in the "special cord" that enables the car doc...is this the same thing as the N1? Maybe this does not work on the I4G

So today I got the mount I posted in a previous post as well as a silicone skin that ordered from the same guy on eBay. Generally when you buy something so cheap from China you expect it's crap and it'll go in the trash the moment you get them, but believe it or not both are pretty good, especially the skin. I got them together for $8.50, arived only a week after shipping, and he even through in a free screen protector.
Graded
Skin - A.
Pros
Great quality, really helps with the slick feeling of the phone. Fits like a glove.
Cons
It makes the unlock and volume buttons even harder to press but not too hard.
Mount - B.
Pros
Fits the phone exactly, pretty stable for plastic. Easy to assemble
Cons
Would have been nicer if it was metal, wish it could fit the phone with the skin. Took me a bit to figure out how it worked since it didn't come with any instructions.

I tried several plug-and-play kits before and never had good luck. I finally broke down and bought arrot MKI 9100 which along with a harness for my vehicle cost ~$200 at crutchfield. The install took about an hour and I am one happy camper
I bought this is a FM transmitter car charger it works but in bumpy roads or when i twist it in a sertain way it loses signal to my stereo i just twist it around and it works again but this problem almost never happens.
It does not Say its for the Inspire but if that cellphone has a screen as big as this one it will fit

I've tried pretty much every type of mount and this is the best IMO:
- No bouncing whatsoever.
- Puts the phone in optimal position on the center console
- No need for suction cup or double side tape on dash
- Portable. Came in handy during a recent vacation.
- $20

I actually bought the same exact mount from another site it was like a dollar more but I bought a few other things so it worked out to about the same price and all from one place. I love the design of it and I drive a 2007 Focus so the vents are in the PERFECT spot for this. I hate suction cup mounts with a passion because I'm really anal about my window being clean lol. What's nice about this particular mount too is the fact that they sell different mounts that simply just swap the phone holder. They sell bike mounts, suction cups, and more on the site I picked it up from.

Been using these for a few weeks so far and they're perfect as long as your cd slot is accessible from your dashboard

Have a case on your one x? Looks interesting but i dont use a case only on weekends to the beach. Would it scratch the phone on the sides?
Nah I don't use a case myself, so far no scratches
Edit: On the bottom is the only part that doesn't have padding so if you can put a padding on the bottom, you'll be guaranteed to be scratch free

Ive had this mount for about a year now. Its simply the best $20 i spent on a cellphone. Let me know if you have any questions.
I've had this mount for about 3 months. It's fantastic! I do wish it swiveled up a little more, but that's a very minor complaint. I highly recommend it!
Forgot to add, I use the blue HTC shell case from AT&T which is very minimalistic, and this mount hasn't made even the tiniest mark in my phone.

I do have to agree on the swivel complaint but like you said it is a very minor complaint. My friends wished they had bought this mount before they bought theirs when they saw it lol.
And just to let the people know, my cd slot is still usable and can play my cd's. However I don't really use cd's anymore cause of spotify and my aux cable
Had mine a year now too. Love it. Best mount I have used, never left a mark on any phone. It even fit the Note!

Landscape or portrait. It swivels 360 degrees, so you can easily orient your phone however you like.
I've had this mount for 5 or 6 months, and it works great. In particular, the sides do not block the MicroUSB port or volume rocker on the One X. So you can easily have the phone in landscape for Navigation, and charge at the same time.
The mount is well thought out, and well made. It installs securely into the CD slot, and holds the phone securely. Like others, I wished the ball joint had a little more freedom to tilt in all directions. But this is a minor quibble, and this mount is a great solution for many people.
A couple things to consider before you buy, depending on the location of your CD player, the position may not be ideal. If you intend on using your phone for Navigation, the CD slot location may be too low. Also, you should consider if any important dashboard controls or displays will be blocked. These are usually not considerations for suction cup mounts. But for my car, the CD slot mount is an almost ideal location. Its near the top of the dashboard, so the screen can be easily seen for Navigation. And it blocks a minimal amount of the air vents and hazard light button (still sufficiently accessible).
Another thing to keep in mind, as indicated by the manufacturer, the system of installation may cause the dust guard on your CD player to become deformed. The spreaders on this mount actually tore the fabric dust guard on my CD player. But the mount has hardly ever left the CD slot since I bought it, and its unlikely to come out much. So I could care less.
The best thing about having this mount, my friends keep getting in my car and saying "Whoa, is that phone holder in your CD slot???" lol
Is it a quick release type of thing? Can a CD be playing while this thing is inserted into the slot? I might actually be the last person on earth who still listens to CDs lol.
Yes a cd can be playing while this dock is inserted and there's a button on top to release your phone.
If you're talking about removing the dock from the cd slot, there's a twist thing on the bottom to loosen the attachment enough so you can remove it.
methodz said:

CD should still work, but I think the mount manufacturer recommends against using it while the mount is in place, if I remember the instructions correctly. As mentioned above, its not quick release to take the mount out of the CD slot. You turn a thumbwheel to tighten it when installing, and loosen it to take it out. It takes a minute or so to take it out, then the same to put it back in. If you aren't changing CD's often, I suppose it would be fine.
For putting in your phone, and taking it out, its very quick. When placing your phone in the mount, just lay it in the rest, and squeeze the padded sides into place. To remove you just press a button on the back (which can almost be done in the same motion as grabbing the phone) and the spring loaded sides open up.
So i found that if you get the Sprint version of HTC evo LTE car mount and unscrew the pieces and remove the charger port on the mount as well as the grey piece as shown in the pictures. It fits amazing! highly recommended if you have a otterbox commuter on your phone!
Makes a great dash cam..

How effective are the suction cups on your windshield when using this type of car mount? I feel like with all of that weight on it, the suction wouldn't hold very well, especially in hot weather...
Using this one on 3 cars.
http://www.amazon.com/Mountek-nGroo...e=UTF8&qid=1374163360&sr=8-1&keywords=mountek
Here's my mini review of the Scosche Power Mount:
I've always been a very picky user when it comes to car mounts. I generally hate the suction mount style because I think it'll fall off over time or the windshield glass is too far for my practical hand reach. I also hate the vent mounting system because... well... I want AC air flow. Then there's the cup holder mount... I like to use them for my actual drinks. Then there's the sticky pad mount... which I think gets dirty and loses its sticky pad property and that the dash is far from my reach.(I drive an SUV) So that leaves me with the cigarette lighter ports mount type, which has its own set of problems... Often times the mounting plug is round... so it will "spin slip" and sag your phone when set at an angle. Or that the plug offers such limited functionalities. So you can see my rationale in my picky-ness... lol
Then there's the flexible arm issue... sometimes the flexible arm is cheaply made and is too weak. The arm is too long/short/missing arm.
And... the holder cradle is bulky, non adjustable, no padding for phone, etc.....
But I have found this and am quite satisfied with it:
http://www.scosche.com/mounts/powermount-power-socket-mount-for-portable-devices
Let's go down my concerns and see how it addresses it.
- Plug has a triangular shape to help brace it against something to prevent "spin slip".
- Plug has 2 USB outputs PLUS the pass through cigarette lighter port. My friend can charge even if they bring their own fatty cigarette lighter plug charger.
- The flexible arm is made of tough bendable metal material and has the right length so the toughness can actually support the weight of the extended arm.
- The arm length is there but not super long. It's enough to extend phone to places around the dash from mounting port. I had to still crunch mine up (S curve) to fit because I didn't want it too far from the plug.
- The mounting cradle is a treat! It has a cool spring loaded mechanism to accommodate wide and narrow devices with click locking so it's actually secured.(squeeze in cradle arm to tighten on clicks. Push button in back to release and widen cradle arm.) The foam in the arms create the perfect soft squeeze to prevent slip. Well padded in all regions where your phone would come in contact with the cradle. It can spin 360 on a pre-determined clicks for portrait or landscape mounting. There are actually two little swivel "feet" that can either be hidden flush for landscape mode or extend to support phone when in portrait mode. (Tiny swivel feet are also soft padded!) The cradle is minimal in obstruction, so the common placements of ports on different phones are fully accessible.
I drive an Acura RDX so its a stiff ride and can feel the bumps of the road, which generally causes dangling items in the car such as the extended arm of a car mount to shake and rattle. I'm happy to say that I don't experience shakes on the car mount! Unless, of course, when I drive over large pot holes or go at high speed over speed bumps, which I would be more concerned about other things than my phone shaking in such instances. However, do note that my mounting arm is crunched up in an S shape and is not exactly dangling out like a fully extended mounting arm, so the shaking effect may have been reduced.
There are some drawbacks to this product though. (not everything is perfect)
- The USB ports only charge at 500mA per port, so it might be a tad low for some. However, in practical use, I find that it is enough to overcome the power drain of when I use Navigation and screen on all the time. So when I get out of the car, my phone had increased in charge %.
- It doesn't come with any cable, so you'll have to use your own. I find that the retractable cables work best for length adjustments.
I've been using this for over a year now. I used an iPhone 4 with it and now I'm using my Galaxy S4 with it.
I also bought one for my nephew as he had been complaining about his vent mounting cradle. He's very happy with it!
PS. I'm not in anyway affiliated with Scosche or benefit from advertising for them. I just feel that my search for a perfect car mount can satisfactory end with this device and I thought the OP of this post (or anyone in search of a car mount) could reap from the fruits of my... labor. lol

Don't have pictures right now but the basic Samsung car mount kit works really well. The mount is pretty sturdy and the phone is held very securely. No annoying shaking of the phone while you drive. Comes with a car charger overall pretty solid piece.

Here's what I did. I have used it with my Streak, Note, and S4 now. Anxiously waiting for an Otterbox to become available for the Active, but in the meantime maybe this will help. It is not the cheapest solution, but being universal, I've used it with 3 phones now over the course of something like 4 years. I no longer need to buy a new mount each time a new phone comes out. I have one in each Jeep, and none of the phones have never fallen out of them, and it is a very solid mount (almost no vibration). Some Jeeps I use a windshield suction cup mount, and some the Proclip as shown here.
The parts I used on this particular one are the following:
http://www.rammount.com/CatalogResu...rtid/082065077045066045050048050/Default.aspx
http://www.rammount.com/CatalogResu...65077045066045050048049085045065/Default.aspx

http://www.proclipusa.com/dashboard...7-2001/proclip-center-mount-852459-13093.cmsv
On the ones with the windshield suction cup I use a longer arm
http://www.rammount.com/CatalogResu...d/082065077045066045050048049085/Default.aspx
And of course the suction cup mount instead of the AMP screw down base and Proclip
http://www.rammount.com/CatalogResu...82065077045066045050050052045049/Default.aspx
I modified the X-Grip by removing the rubber pads, cutting off the original bent arms, and then bending new ones slightly further in, then painting and reinstalling the rubber phone holding pads. When I started down this path, RAM didn't have an X-Grip that fit the Streak or the Note in an Otterbox Commuter or similar. The smaller phone X-Grip might work with the S4, but I don't know. I know that this works, and works well. Hope that helps.
