OFFICIAL GINGERBREAD FOR THE EPIC HAS ARRIVED.THIS ROM IS OBSOLETE!
*Stable* stock Gingerbread for the Epic
This is the stock EH17 leak with all of the important stability fixes and a few bug fixes baked in. This ROM is very stable. It doesn't reboot randomly and the GPS does not lock up.
The ODIN/Heimdall version is based on the Stock Deodexed EH17 tar released by crawrj
The CWM Version is based on the EH17 update.zip by Decad3nce
Modifications to the original EH17 leak are:
mkasick's 10/19 kernel, based on official source
Necrosan's Hotspot Hack
hienkhieu's GPS Fix
fix for mount command: For brain-dead root apps that only know how to do `mount -o remount,rw /system`
Latest Superuser.apk and su binary integrated
Along with the people noted above, a big thanks to chris41g for his cheat sheet on how to make a tar for ODIN.

Is this a 7zip or is it a tar that you compressed into a 7zip?

It's a tar file compressed with 7zip. Unzip before flashing. I clarified the first post.

Just an FYI - I was checking this out and when I use ODIN I don't have to unzip the file first - ODIN recognizes the download file as a TAR file -- I unzipped it as you suggested here - but when I went to find the file in ODIN to insert in the PDA slot, it recognized both the original file and the one I extracted as a tar file...
that leads me to beleive at you don't have to unzip it first - you can just odin the file you downloaded.
Correct me if i'm wrong, but I don't think mkasicks kernel fixes the memory leak issues and reboots that are inherent in eh17. I was reading the thread and people still seem to be getting reboots. I do hope its truly gone in this build, but kinda doubting it since i've seen the reboots on every eh17 ROM i've tried.
EDIT: Forgot to add, thank you for your work on this toadlife.

This is identical to my current setup sans the hotspot hack. Gps works great, and although not completely gone, reboots are far and few between. This is my current daily and loving it!

OK, once again, reboots are not caused by these mythical memory leaks. It is a voltage issue that so far has been fixed for most with mkasick's kernel and also Rodderik's alpha test that he ran on IRC. So called memory leaks are apps sucking down your memory and not giving it back. Just download Memory Booster Lite and look at all the crap in the task killer sucking your memory dry! I ran a few EH17 ROMs. The worst case after clearing apps with memory booster lite was after 3 days I could not recover 30MB. I went from 206MB free at boot to 173MB free clearing tasks. I would not call this a memory leak in any sense of the word. It is more likely caches filling up and not releasing that 30 MB.
Reboots are caused by partial wakes from deep sleep period! Easily fixed with Tegrak/SetCPU combination as posted in General. I am on my 6th day testing Rodderik's kernel with no reboots without the Tegrak/SetCPU fix.

Lockscreen Mod
So...I tried Maddoggins lockscreen mod and got force closes and the modem wouldn't connect. I guess I'll try decadence's rom over this, then try the lockscreen mod. I hope putting decadence's rom over this doesn't change any of the stability fixes here.
Update: I tried Decadence Rom then the lockscreen mod and got the same results. Must be a problem with the lockscreen mod.

You can always apply these stability fixes yourself on any EH17 based ROM if you don't want a stock ROM. The kernel, hotspot hack and gps fix are all distributed through zips that are flashable with CWM.

Did you clear cache and Dalvik cache after flashing the mod?
This is starting to look like my girlfriends next rom lol what do u guys think?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
You know, i actually did some Comparison on the voltage for the CPU frequencies from Froyo to gingerbread and i realized that because samsung has been trying to undervolt our cpu and has failed miserably, most if not all of the random reboots are from this. I used Tegrak to fix the problem and haven't had a random reboot since.

I suppose I could. I can live without the lockscreen mod. I just went back to using your stock EH17 with the fixes. I just added CRT off and Overscroll. Not sure how to add the 1% battery mod, so I just added an app with that.
Thanks for the reply and your hard work.

I cleared cache and Dalvik before adding the mod. I tried several times, odining back to deodexed rooted stock, then wiping 3x, then flashing Decadence's Stock Rom, then wiping 3x, then adding the mod. Didn't seem to work for me. It worked in the past, but after a day or two, I would lose the contact icon and I would not be able to open contacts. That's ok, I don't need it anyway.
Thanks for your reply
It is nice that you added Heimdall. I use that a lot to swap out recovery or param.ifs or modems. People should not be afraid. It is more robust than odin with a lot less failures.

Yeah I thought it was only for Linux and OSX, before someone mentioned that it works in Windows the other day. After checking it out I don't understand why anyone here uses ODIN.
I originally tried the EH17 leak, and due to reboots and GPS issues, I went back to EC05.
I saw this post yesterday, and I couldn't resist, and after a day of testing, I've had zero reboots, GPS works perfectly, and battery life is also better than stock EC05.
This truly feels like an official release.
AND now that it appears that Gingerbread is the Galaxy S final update (Even though the equivalent speced Nexus S is getting it), I have all my hopes on Cyanogen for the Epic to be completed with Wimax support and everything to get my Ice Cream Sandwich.
I really think that since carriers use two year contacts as the industry standard, oems should really support their phones for two years, but this isn't the case, so we are lucky to have great devs on XDA.
I appreciate all the hard work.

Strange but it was dialing right away for me until I set up my googlevoice app now the lag is back.
google voice will lag the dialer no matter what rom you're running.
it'll lag even more if you select the option for it to ask you each time you dial.

One thing I noticed after I flashed this to my hero was a2sd was version 2.7 Beta 7.
I was trying Fresh 2.1.2 earlier and I know that one used a2sd 2.7 update 1
I found the latest a2sd from another XDA post (sorry I can't post links yet)
so I copied that to my sdcard and flashed that and it seemed to update fine.
Is there any reason I should stay with the a2sd in the rom and not the updated one?
Flashed this a couple of hours ago. Nice to have a rom with everything in it. If I want something removed, then I just pull it. The only problem is that you cannot do a prl update. I pushed the OMADM.apk file from fresh to the /system/app folder and everything works as it should.
Great job getting this out there. Really appreciate it.
I have attached the apk to fix the updateing issue.
Only issue I've found so far is that Teeter won't run (It crashes for me on launch and I have to force quit).
Of course that may not be an issue for others, but I wanted to report.
Hello everyone glad to see there was a demand for something like this, Just my personal opinion but the dialer/phone lag seems to have been reduced greatly with the update, also the phone seems a little more responsive all around, havent seen any negative's about the update as of yet.

Fixes
I believe I fixed the permissions issue with 0.2_1, however just in case, here's the fix thanks to corradokng
Code:
adb shell
su (go to phone select allow)
cd /data
busybox chmod 771 /data/app
busybox chmod 644 /data/app/*
exit
Changelog
Code:
0.4
-inlcuded bali kernel (thanks drhonk)
--- this allows init.d to work which allows tweaks to be executed properly
--- also allows my permission script to run, it will fix your permissions every time you reboot
- no more FCs, all apps work on first boot
0.3_2
-settings restored (had the lockscreen one, causing issues)
-framework restored (same thing, left in the lockscreen one)
-both of these fixed the Mms crashing issue
-you must mount system, data, and cache for it to flash properly.
0.3
-fixed big & ugly quickpanel bar
-optimized version
-everything should work without having to mount /system /data and /cache, but it doesn't hurt :)
0.2_2
-fixed the fixed fixed permissions
-mounting in updater-script testing
0.2_1
-removed lock screens until we can get it working without FC in the browser
-updated version to display correctly
-fixed fixed permissions (??? let's hope!)
0.2
-fixed gingerbread keyboard fc
-re-added Samsung boot sequence so it's not blank (if you use a kernel that supports bootanimation.zip you will see the trigger one)
-added Corrandokng's port of Whitehawkx's lockscreens, power menu, & clock options
-fixed permissions on /data/app
-added Bloater, I will add apps in later (please don't try and download Vibrant apps, you may be sorry if you do and it doesn't play nice)
-added zipalign apps at boot (thank the darkyyrom team for their better zipalign script)
-added Trigger theming to dialer & settings
-removed some more bloat

eagerly awaiting for the ROM! Thanks again for your hard work!
Kernel still isn't flashing which is resulting in a soft brick. Not sure why.
Also. This rom is just some 7zip magic, nothing too serious, yet.

You don't need download mode for that type of brick. I'll quote robbbbit for the answer;

Hey everybody -
Seems folks are wanting some sort of cwm recovery flashable twist on the i577 stock ICS rom that was first posted here, but is also discussed here and can be attained in an easy one-click odin fashion from here thanks to thomas.raines. Well, I think I managed to put one together. I don't know if I will tinker on this much, but you never know - I can't stop myself most of the time.
I AM IN NO WAY RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS (GOOD OR BAD) AS A RESULT OF FLASHING OR ATTEMPTING TO FLASH WHAT IS POSTED HERE!
The process to get here was rather simple (though the updater-script editing was rather annoying). After flashing via thomas.raines's handy dandy odin 1-click tool, I got a system dump. Originally I was just going to open up the system.img.ext4 and get what I needed from there, but I did it this way to figure out some permissions and symlink issues I was having with the updater-script. I then went through and deodexed, debloated, added in busybox, added in SuperSU, and made one small smali hack to Contacts.apk to stop a rather annoying insistence on checking AT&T subscriber crap every time you went into contacts. That's it - so this is not really all that "developed" or anything. All that is contained within the cwm zip is the same stuff that is contained in the one-click - it's just /system and boot.img (kernel) - nothing more (i.e. this does NOT change your modems). That all being said, let me know if things work, or if any oddities come up. Also feel free to comment on how this might improve or if I've gone about anything in a not-so-smart way.
Usual rules apply - make sure to wipe data/factory reset to avoid issues. Flash in CWM recovery.
CWM Installation instructions:
- Backup your current setup/data
- Download file and place on sdcard
- Boot into CWM recovery
- Recommended to wipe data/factory reset in CWM recovery
- Select and install the .zip you put on your sdcard

Let me know if there are any problems! Also - it seems like general discussion should get pointed to here, as it's all the same thing really (read: I didn't think it warranted a new thread).

---CHANGELOG---
Final update - 10/2/12
- Somewhat fixed camera.apk
***** Viewer still appears upside down for rear camera, but all images/videos taken are correct orientation
- Changed stock boot animation
- Updated some apks
Initial Posting - 10/1/12
- Deodexed
- Took out lots of what I call bloat
***** If I took out something you wanted, use the links in the OP to get it back
***** If I left something you didn't want - let me know and I'll think about removing
- Added in SuperSU v0.96 by Chainfire (from here)
- Added busybox 1.19.4 (CM9)
- Edited Contacts.apk to avoid AT&T Subscriber checking when entering Contacts
- Added .bak to PowerOn.ogg in /system/etc/ to eliminate boot sound
-----------------------------
NOTES
Known issues:
1) Camera is upside-down
This only affects the rear-facing camera. The recent "fix" does not change the preview/viewer (the "live action" view of what the camera sees), but now all pictures or videos you take will be right-side up - so it's better than nothing I suppose
2) Softkeys/capacitive buttons no longer work
This seems to happen from time to time (though not very often by any means), in a way/manner that is as of yet predictable. That being said - all three times I have encountered this issue the below process has fixed it (thanks go to j3r3goss for providing the info needed for the solution):
- Open dialer/phone
- Type in the following in the dialer
*#*#2663#*#*
- Once the last * is entered, a new screen will show that has some information and (more importantly) two buttons. Press the BOTTOM buttom (the one that says "Touch key FW update"). Wait for this to complete (NOTE: This can take a LONG time, and you may have to reboot on your own if it hasn't said its completed its process after 10 or so minutes (my experience - no reasoning or logic behind it really, so be cautious)), then reboot the phone.
3) No WiFi Calling ability
Yep. It's an AT&T stock rom, and as they don't have the wifi calling capability, so too does this lack such fun functionality.
Reserved for something... not really sure what though. Figured I should grab it in case this little thing grows in the future - better safe than sorry I suppose.
confirmed flash good, no softkey issues
great job!
Good job man! Going to flash this tonight and make a 1 click for you with some Lightning Zap! goodies and modems (if it all works right...lol)...
saving this for later
Running great so far, definitely a lot snappier on first boot. No errors so far, glad the contact bug was fixed
There sure was a lot of bloat huh? I thought Tmo was bad lol.
Well I guess you beat me to it, way to go.

I heard the radios were a little weak. Did you fix that in this file or is it the same?
Sent from my SGH-T769 using xda app-developers app
There are no radios included, so you keep whatever you had (and the blaze ones do seem a bit better than the exhilarate ones)
I just flashed, loving it btw, but my radios are a little weak? I factory reset, flashed the rom, factory reset again because it said to do so before reboot (idk I was a little paranoid lol) and then flashed system apps and boot.
Edit: i didnt realize earlier but all the bloat and such is remaining too? I'm gonna reflash in a bit and get back to you

Push this apk to system to get weather working on lockscreen
WiFi calling should be able to be integrated into the ROM. It's not kernel specific, but might require some framework alterations. IMHO, it would be best to take this new ICS kernel and pair it with the OS from SGS2, that is made for T-mobile.
I haven't gotten a chance yet to look at the kernel to see if the flipped camera can be fixed there, or if just replacing it with the SGS2 camera app might do the trick.
Lots of opportunities for hacking together a great ROM from this.
Concerning the radios guys and gals!
It seems to be an ICS thing with the radios. We had the same issue on the SGS4G. They have to be padded in order to function properly since the SGS4G never got an official ICS update and we are still running on gb modem and kernel... Maybe Sammy will un-ass the update for us and all will be good...lol

Yeah, I use to have a G2x with ICS and the developers always made it clear that the Radio issue is a problem with ICS 4.0.4 itself.

Well, I tried using ES file explorer and it did not work. So I went into the root settings in the application, and I have everything checked, but when I try to mount the filesystem as writable, it says "failed to mount". I tried setting it as rw in adb, and it said it was a read-only file system
Es never worked for me with the root functions. Always has to use root explorer or adb

I will put together a stock boot tar.. And if you send me one for your device I will put together one for your device too. But it's just not cool to take peoples stuff they put together for the community and upload to your host and share it around..
No harm no foul..
Will that stock boot tar be compatible with my s6 edge+ too?
Perhaps since the Note 5 and the s6 edge+ are almost identical
the roms, recovery and the kernel might be interchangeable. ..
Maybe that's just a lot of wishful thinking on my part.

I'm not sure. If it has any similarities to the s6 and s6 edge then it might boot but stiff gets broke like screen gets twisted on x Axis and whatnot so I kind of doubt it.. But recovery I'm sure would be fine.
In the build.prop issues like the screen might be an easy fix by renaming
the model numbers or the versions.
To me it looks like the actual rom has parts in it for more than one phone
model and certain files like the build.prop tell the rom which parts to use
depending on the phone's model.
Or am I completely wrong?

Yeah I don't mean to sound rude but yea you're wrong the build.prop won't do anything if you make the changes I mean if you flash it and your axis gets inverted you just put in the dialer code *#2663# and press ftp firmware upgrade and it will fix it it..
The kernel modules is what tells it what to do

Yea, I know about that *#2663#, it saved my bacon when my touchscreen on my
Note 4 went crazy, it was the right resolution and size but none of the touches
corresponded with what was on the screen, however the s-pen did work properly.
After punching in that code and doing the upgrade the phone worked perfectly.
Before finding that code I was about to flush the phone down the toilet. LOL
The problem was all my fault, I by error odin flashed the wrong version of twrp.
Zip failed to flash on my Note5. Restoring my backup, I'll get you the error log when I'm back in Android.
EDIT: Literally nothing helpful...
Code:
Installing '/sdcard/Deodexed-N920TUVU1AOGE.zip'...
Checking for MD5 file...
Skipping MD5 check: no MD5 file found
Error flashing zip '/sdcard/Deodexed-N920TUVU1AOGE.zip'
Updating partition details...
Let me take a look inside the zip and see what's up.
EDIT2: Yeah, you don't have a META-INF folder. No updater-script or anything. No wonder this won't flash. You'll need to fix that before this will flash.

The lollipop updater scripts are different from jelly bean they have to find the block and mount it that's why I have to run it through the kitchen real fast I just threw this up there the other day for any better qualified people to use as a base.

No, you can do something like this:
Code:
run_program("/sbin/mount", "-t", "auto", "/system");
and that'll work just fine.
I have a feeling mine bootlooped because of permissions or symlinks, but it wasn't booting far enough for me to get a logcat of it.

Exactly.. Archikitchen does all the sym links in the updater script.. I'll admit I'm not that skilled lol I can just build a simple ROM. It seems like you know what you're doing if you can help in any way that would be appreciated other than that the only way I know how to do it is through the kitchen
