[Q] battery usage... Again lol - HTC Sensation

Hi, been using ic as a daily not had my sensation long, i know there's loads of these topics i've even helped people in others. But I think my issue is different
I'm not sure if it's related to the rom, ive tested a load of roms but I can't get the battery life stable, ive read a lot and tried everything, but I can't get below 40mA in standby and the percentage drops are inconsistent (drops a few percent here and there, obviously its difficult to get accurate battery stats on the Sensation.
I'm running leedroid atm with no extras ive gone through two full cycles, i have no extra apps installed apart from xda premium and bmw I can't even get below 40 in standby by with radio off,
I'm using recommend radio and have come from a full wipe.
I do generally have a weak signal. But they doesn't mean anything because I've tested with radio off
I have the xe so i have the 1730mA battery.
When I charge I get green light on 100% but bmw still reports me dragging 60mA from the charger?
Do I need to change any script because i have a bigger battery?
I have had the phone for 2 weeks, ive probably ran the battery through 35-40 cycles.
I have no ext partitions on my sd
Could it be sd related (16gb class6)
I'm using bmw 1.8beta and i have mA corrections in with the other thing set to auto. I have also set my battery capacity to 1730mA
Please will someone give me a little bit of there time.
Edit/ is it normal for cpu1 to always be online with leedroid kernel no tweaks

I too am getting high battery lose in standby. I have heard that any app like Current Widget can not measure the outputs correctly on the Sensation. Coming from the HD2 where I was getting around 2-6mA, I can't tell where all the power is going. Like you, I have tested with everything off and nothing running and still get over 40mA. I know that drain is high even if the output readings aren't correct. A huge issue with the HD2 had to do with the video drivers causing high drain. Could that be the issue here?

I don't like bumping :-( but I'm desperate :-(

I don't have any answers, but I have the same problem. My battery will never get below 25 mA even after 24 hours on the charger. I have about decided that it is a measurement error. I have put the phone in Airplane mode, turned off all sync, turned off or uninstalled every app on the phone except BMW and the log still shows nothing lower that 25 mA.
My stock battery is the 1525 mA and with even moderate use it will drain down to 10% in 6 hours or less. With no use at all it will drain down to 10% in 8 hours. If I get some long winded guys calling me several times it might not last 4 hours.
My solution has been to buy two 1900 mAh batteries and an external charger. At least I can now have use of the phone for about 8 - 10 hours and have two charged spares in case the first one drains down.

Desire s batt drain with screen off

Hello fellow users
My gf got herself a desire s today and i installed battery monitor on it and saw that the device have a drain of 14-18ma with screen off
I have a desire hd and got a drain of 3-5ma with my screen off
Is this because i have a custom kernel?
I sometimes have this with my dhd and when i whipe dalvik its cleared again to 3-5ma
Can you guys check how much drain you have with screen off?
Thanks

Thabks for the reps.
You have a little lower then my gf.
Gonna ask her how she gets out of apps.
As for closing bsckground apps i believe the gb taskkiller should do that on its own atleast froyo does on my phone so cant imagine they taken it out although its htc

14mA with WiFi always on and 2 Exchange accounts syncing every 5 minutes plus GMail account syncing constantly.
You might take all background syncing processes under consideration. Also bad wireless reception may cause higher currents.
...number of active widgets, live wallpaper,...
Download an App Killer, they are probably just staying in the background and eating the battery.

since froyo there is a built in app killer so gingerbread also has it and it and therefore using another one will eat extra batt
Xda is full with threads why not to use a app killer

this is what i was curious about. my nexus one gets between 3-5mA of idle current draw during the night with wifi on. but the thunderbolt for example, with the Sense UI ROM, has some weird problem where the current is 34mA idle on stock ROM, and that is what everyone is seeing. i collected 7 days worth of current widget data from TWO units, both identical results.
so is the new desire s something to do related to the new sense UI? or is the thunderbolt just a fluke? 18mA is too high for idle. and especially since the new HTC inspire i've gotten it to 1mA during idle at times, which is mind blowing. so i always attributed that to the new snapdragon efficiency. i was hoping the desire s would be even better, and get superb battery life with 1450mAh battery and normal sized screen at 3.7".
please post more results when you can!

I have no idea what is causing iti have a desire be myself and there are plenty desire s ports out and all give me the drainage I'm used to(3-5 ma) maybe the defs have some tweak to save batt
It could also be the debugging tools that are in a Rom and are disabled in custom roms

Currentwidget and Battery monitor widget logs that the phone use around 20 mA (8 hours log) whit the screen off.
and after 8 hours the battery is drained from 1450 mAh to 1435 mAh.
This is just not possible whit a steady use of 20 mA
1 hour of 20 mA = 20mAh and after 8 hour it needs to be 160mAh

How did you measure it ? Something must be wrong : the battery drainage or the battery use. In the best case you have battery use about 2mA and that's just awesome. If it's not the case you just drained 160mAh as you say it should be. Hope that it's the be first one.
Yeah I just figured it was a typo or mis read his mAh, I can't see any other answer. I would do another over night test and try to confirm.

I did logged whit Currentwidget and Battery monitor widget. And i did calculated the 160 mAh on my own.
The widgets both say that the device use 20 mA messured every 60 sec. After a hour that will be 20 mAh and 8 Hours it will be 160 mAh (8*20mAH=160mAh)
But Battery monitor widget olso did says that my battery is drained from 1450 to 1435 after 8 hours. ( I started whit a full battery)
Last night over 8 hours the device used about 1%=14.5 mAh
2011/04/17|01:27:28|-23mA|68%|3917mV|29.3ºC
2011/04/17|09:27:28|-20mA|67%|3902mV|20.8ºC
I wonder why the desire s gets such high current drain. The original desire, and my nexus one, get 6 mA during idle screen off.
After some days of BatteryMonitor logging I can say, that the current with screen off never drops below 14mA. Often it's even higher (over 30mA).
The Gingerbread on board battery consumption overview shows Maps as a major consumer. Even if I never used the Maps application since the last complete battery charge, it is there as one of the most bat drainers. I have the feeling that it's this behaviour after updating Maps from the shipped 5.2 to the current 5.3.1
But that's OT. The battery drain is too high even without the Maps app.
normal idle screen off should never be higher than 6 mah.....
so what the hell is up with this thing :O ?
i'm experiencing the same issue too
i was experiencing some horrific battery time also, like 30% drain in 7 hours screen off while my iphone only drained 7% in that time. I believe the culprit could possibly be the "use best wifi performance" button coupled with wifi not sleeping.
Ive now turned off "best wifi performance " and set wifi sleep to 15 minutes and im now getting 18-22mA - i understand this is still bad - i cant spot any other apps using battery.
Will update again later today.
All feed back and information appreciated and we all appear in the same boat.
Although I have wifi turned off during the day and still get battery drain
Thanks

[Q] Battery usage Sensation compared to other Android phones

My previous phone has been a Desire HD. Battery usage on this device while the screen was turned off has always been around 1-5 mA
On the Sensation batery usage while the screen is turned off is around 130-200 mA
I've tried various ROMs including stock.
Is everybody experiencing the same battery drain or/and can anyone explain the huge difference between these 2 devices?
the same numbers also here( 130-200 mA) i guess this numbers are not real because in 6-7 hours of standby the battery is emty... anyway htc sensation have the worst battery i ever had...maybe we get some good results with another rom battery friendly
My HTC Sensation's battery drains to 50%-40% in 9hr-10hr - with minimum use. All sync is turned of except weather and exchange account which set up to sync every 2hr - 3hr on weekends. Which is not bad comparing to SGS2, where i experienced terrible battery life 8hr max, but terrible compared to my HTC Incredible S, running with same settings i did see 2 days battery drain on one charge. I will put Sensation on proper test tomorrow, when i start my work.
Thanks for the quick replies
I'm just curious where the difference between 1-5 mA and 130-200 mA comes from?
I understand that the Sensation has a different feature set but this standby usage is outrageous..

Is this mA calculated by an app? It's well known that mA readings on the HTC Sensation with, e.g. Battery Monitor Widget, don't work. It's an archived thread somewhere on XDA forums.
Better way to measure it is this:
Leave your phone on sleep (screen off) for 2 hours or so (make sure the phone is actually in sleep mode!! If you don't know what that means, look for a thread on BetterBatteryStats as that could be your problem).
Then, find out how much of your battery drained at this time (make sure you didn't start the experiment at 100% because % battery is displayed extremely incorrectly between about 100% and 95%).
Finally, divide your battery capacity (1580mAh for stock) by the amount of hours the device was asleep by and then multiply the result by the % battery drained in that time.
E.g. phone asleep for 2 hours, 5% battery drained.
Average mA = (1580/2)*0.05 = 40mA
I dont experience any of the same battery issues... not that i know my mA draw.. but im going to start looking into. I can make my phone last easily a full 24 hour period with average use id say... But i froze all useless clutter apps no carrier or useless apps just what i use. I keep mostly everything off cept data randomly when im on irc/aim etc
Last charge 1d 10h and battery was at 49% :|
33% display
22% wifi
22% cell standby
20% phone idle
3% voice calls
Now didnt use phone very much in that 1d 10h though
found alot of useful information on this thread when it came to freezing apps i know there are a few tools in the development forum that will remove a bunch for you but i didnt like that method since i used some :|

Still strange that this battery seems to drains so much faster then my DHD although it should hold about 300 mAh more.
Why strange? Dhd has only one processor core and smaller screen resolution which should take less power to render, in theory at least.

The screen resolution should not matter in standby/sleep I suppose.
To be clear; I'm only talking about standby/sleep power consumption.
For the dualcore I would expect it to be around 10-20 mA compared to 1-5 mA. Not 130-200 mA..

What kind of battery life are you talking about?
E.g. anything over 4-5 hours of screen on time is quite good. On standby anything over 24 hours is very good.

Battery issues - won't fully charge, drains fast, plug in = back up to 50% instantly

I started using Cyanogen mod a few weeks ago (7.1.0), and after I calibrated the battery a few days in, I've had no issues. Recently though, I'm having numerous problems with battery life...
1. Phone often refuses to charge to full. I can leave it plugged in all night while I sleep and wake up to only 90% battery - this never used to be an issue. It doesnt always happen. Sometimes it gets to 100% like normal.
2. The phone drains insanely fast. Today, I took it off charger before I left for work at 7AM and it was dead by noon, even though it was never used and just sat in my pocket at work. When I check battery usage, android system and dialer are the top two at around 35% each, with cell standby and phone idle the only others at around 15% each. That's with no GPS, bluetooth, wifi, 3G, etc...
3. When I plug the phone in after one of these super fast drains, it's suddenly at roughly 50% power as soon as I power it up. It will usually drain faster than usual from there, but I may get a few more hours out of it then depending on usage.
This doesn't happen all the time, but it's getting more frequent. I've also seemed to notice an increase in temp since flashing cm7.
Any help?
Sounds like you have a bad cell.

Bad cell in your battery that is. One that is shorted somehow. Did it get wet? Might just be a bad battery.
i think all smart phone have this problem because they take too much battery for usage but battery inside are like ****. i think batery need to bigger than 4000mah because i would love to browse the web for full day and if i leave it on stand by it should keep the phone on for at least week and for playing games it should last for more than 8-9 hours but what we get is 1730-1520mah cell which is like crap size for sensation i leave my 3g and wifi on all the time with brightness nearlly full because i don't like it when i'm using youtube
but i get 3-3.5 hours of usage from 100% to 5%. so you can tell how crap the battery is but i have bought a spare battery which is like 7 hours of total usage through the day.

Yes it's ****, but what can you do about it? All smartphones are like that, battery can only last so long. Give it another 2-4 years and we'll have batteries that last a week long on a single charge. I forgot what's it called but they have already started researching into it.
Cm7 has been my best Rom with one major flaw - the battery. Tried every trick of the trade, including Anchor battery. I would last max 3/4 of a day, average user if email, Twitter, a few or no pix,
CM7 will not be my daily driver.

I take it you've tried the usuals? Quite odd as I have used a cm7 based Rom and didn't get such a poor battery life, perhaps try a full wipe (inc dalvik and cache) and flash again? See what that does perhaps. Odd that system and dialer are causing such drain.

[Q] High battery drain (50-100 mA in current widget in sleep)

I have an unlocked T-Mobile Sensation 4G and I've tried a lot of different rom (with Sense and AOSP, GB and ICS).
I had made battery calibration every rom change (Full charge -> wipe battery stats -> do some full discharge/charge circles in normal use).
Every time I have 50-100 mA battery drain in "sleep" according to Current Widget and another battery widget (tried another to commit that Current Widget tells truth).
The phone settings are maximum power-saving:
Fixed small brightness
2g only
Data and auto-sync are turned off
Wifi only if needed
CPU is downclocked to 1.2 gHz
Battery is stock. Phone is two months old.
In my regular usage (1 hours of calls, 10 min wifi) phone dies in 12 hours after full charge.
It is not my first android and I'm not a total noob. My Desire HD with one year old battery live 2 days with my usage.
Also I notice, that sometimes battery left is not accurate and changed after reboot to a bigger value. For example, 80% left -> reboot -> 82% left.
Any suggestion?
Thanks in advance!
Sorry for my poor English...
My suggestions:
1. Use system tuner or a similar app to check up on which apps are draining the most power (keeping the CPU on, etc).
2. If no culprit can be found, full wipe and reflash your ROM, and refrain from downloading any apps, see if that improves battery drain. If it does, slowly install more apps until the battery drain goes up again, and you'll know whats causing it.
3. If reflashing does not help batter life, you might want to try another ROM or kernel.
4. If none of those help, or even if they do, I highly recommend an ANKER battery, it'll at the very least boost your battery life a few more hours.
5. If the battery life still sucks, then it might be a hardware issue and you might want to get it exchanged or whatnot.
I used to have the same high battery drain problem, but after flashing new ROMS/Kernels and switching to an ANKER Battery, I now get 2 days of light/medium use out of my Sensation.
Currently using Insert Coin 4.5.0 with 1.5GHz overclock+undervolt if you're interested in trying.

How much does your battery actually drain overnight? Should be around 1% per hour or less if all is well. Disregard currentwidget in deep sleep mode as the Sensation has a very broken meter.

With jumping battery meter I don't know if these values will be correct. But when the battery value reaches 0% the phone shuts down immediately and don't turn on. So 0% it counts well.

12hrs with the standard battery is actually very good for a sense build, without sense it should go around 15 - if the battery is in good condition. The battery driver for the sensation is very buggy and you won't get accurate results with any measurement app. Don't worry about the standby or inuse readings as they will both be wrong.
If you're battery drains faster than 1% per hour in standby, assuming you are in a good signal area, then use a system info app to see which program isn't sleeping, then uninstall that program.
But it doesn't sound to me like you have a problem.
According to the log file it drains 1-2% in hour (now I'm using aosp build, MIUI). I think, new Anker battery is the only way. Thanks to all!
Maybe in the future we'll get a more accurate battery driver...

Whats your Normal battery Drain in ICS ROM?

During sleep mode or the screen off I have a 54mA drain this is too far from my Android ROM HD2 it only has 3-6mA drain. I have the latest firmware 3.32, AOSP nonsense. I worried this drain to much even with cpu underclocked to 916Mhz, Minimal Rom.
I used Battery Monitor with graphical history.
Just my own experience, but I haven't really heard of a sensation owner getting 3-5 mA battery drain. The lowest mine generally gets is in the 40s and 50s. I'm more than willing to be corrected on this however, if other sensation owners are getting significantly lower battery drain then I am definitely interested to hear about it
When my sensation was still stock it wouldn't even get below triple figures and the battery life was woeful. Since rooting and so forth I'm seeing the 40-50 mA I mentioned before. With moderate use I'd get about 36 hrs out of a charge.
Maybe have a read of this if you want to look into it? It is a Desire thread, but that makes no difference to the process being used.
Ignore the reported mA values, the battery driver doesn't report them so your widget/app has to interpret what it can best guess. Even the percentage remaining is only an approximate value. Standby times will vary depending on how much time the phone is awake but after going from 100% to 10% you should get around 5hrs 'screen time on' with a senseless ROM and stock battery - 3 or 4hrs with a sense ROM. If you are getting less than this you may have a signal issue or a rogue app, otherwise don't worry about the mA values.
I came from the HD2 also, I spent a while trying to replicate it's standby consumptions on the sensation - I've now uninstalled all the battery monitors as they were useless on this phone.
I am using CurrentWidget and i get drain like 10 mA in sleep.
Also mine active use time of Sensation XE (stock accu) with insert coin 5.1.4 rom is more then 24 hours right now (after removing all unused by me services, and performing battery calibration + 8+1+1 charge cycle) + I always charge it for hour or two after it is showing 100%. So basically i unplug it @ morning ~ 6 AM, listen music for hour +, then all the day wifi + twitter + facebook + icq are active + some phonetalks, may be some photo\vid recording, reading e-mails and etc + hour of music on way back home, and after all that when i come home @ evening I usually have 60 - 50% left. No games are played, they are the only thing that can drain fast.
All i did - spent few days reading forums and internets about battery use, then selected all that made common sense and did it. Now I am very happy with mine phone performance. (also quattro gives mine device ~2800 score in benchmark). And active use time feels for me like 3x or even 4x of what I experienced on a stock system when I bought phone.

Check my sig, I'm using Darkforest 6.1.0. OC'd to 1.5 GHz on-demand, powersave on screen off. Auto-brightness. Right now I have 52% battery left after 17hrs moderate use today. Goes alright
