[Q] Why is my standby battery usage high? - HTC Sensation

Hi, I have just come over from the HD2 threads as I'm using a Sensation XE now . My battery current when running android on standby was around 7 - 20 ma. On my XE it is between 180 and 220ma. I killed all running tasks etc but still no change. i'm using Battery Monitor Widget to check the currents. The only thing i have on is mobile internet. I also have on background sync but that was on with my HD2 as well. Is there anything I should look out for that my being draining the battery? Also I'm on stock rom

What did you already tried to solve the problem? Did you already do a soft reset/wipe all data (except that on the SD card)? How long is your battery life?
Yesterday i called HTC because my battery life is reduced drastically compared to a few weeks ago. They told me to turn off everything like bluetooth, wifi etc (after a soft reset) and put the phone in plane mode while screen brightness was 100% and screen time out never so the screen stays on during the test. Next I needed to write down how fast the battery was drained. My battery was at 55% after 2 hours (without doing anything with the phone). According to HTC this was to fast and therefore they send me a new battery.

In 1 hour of standby the battery has drained 5%. the battery current usage is way to high for standby. I have had this phone on 3 days so I dont think i need to do a full wipe. I dont use wifi or bluetooth and they are always switched off. Seems strange to have a high battery usage while in standby compared to my hd2. This battery is meant to be a high capicity

use battery monitor widget (use a beta version from the forum, not the market). set it to "mA corrections" and choose automatic from the list of supported phones. i get anywhere from 5-7 mA drain (standby, of course).

it doesnt show beta

Try turning OFF mobile data AND sync. Then see how the standby current drain is.

It's still in the -200's in standby

Sorry, i changed to automatic and now it -40 and 60. Is it right now or should it be lower?

mine's weird, it'll start higher and gradually gets lower. see what happens in a few hours of standby.

Hi indie.
How is your battery drain now? I ask because I have same problem (original rom) and I don't know what to do.

Hi, I'm on stock Rom too. Once I kill all tasks by the default task manager, it ranges between 25 - 60. It does take a bit of time to get there. I Have seen it as low as 19. You need to follow steps and get the beta widget and set it to corrections as mentioned earlier in the posts.

Same here, took about half an hour to go from ~-100mA to -30mA
However I can't seem to get 0mA when fully charged. Anyone else with the same issue?

same here. stays at 100mA after 100%. i can live with that

Check out guide in my singature.. It will solve your battery problems in no worires

Just a quick update. I let my battery completely die (never done this before) and charged my phone fully. I then deleted the battery stats.txt and switched phone off. the charged some more. Now when my phone uses -5 on standby which it never did before.

Well took my phone off charge at 11.05 today and its been on standby. It's now 15.52 and battery is still on F. Battery drain is now at -3 so i'm well happy.

Thanks indie. Can you let us know what will be happening in the future with your battery?

Battery drain in standby issue?

Hi all,
My 6 days old Sensation (Vodafone contract UK) discharge a huge amount during Standby (200-350mA). I got the number via Battery Widget Pro 1.65. For the first few days I did deplete the battery fully before charging it to full. Today I have factory reset it to the original condition at around 4pm with 58% battery full. Now at 9pm, it is only 18%. During this time, I spent about 1 hour with the phone, the rest is standby. I set the widget to monitor with 1 minute interval and when looking at the log file, it can be seen that the phone consumed from 200-400mA during the standby time. Coming from HD2 with Android modded 3-8mA standby consumption, this is a huge huge dissapoinment!
Is this because of my battery or is this my phone? Should I ask for a replacement? What about you, did you see similar pattern?
Thanks,
Duong

Ditto!! So annoyed since I too am coming from HD2 where HyperDroid's consumption had dropped to a flat 2mA in standby. This is insane for a native android device. Not to mention the heating while playing games and most importantly, the front facing camera producing upside down image during fring video chats.. grrr!
Dunno what the cause OR solution is (besides switching over to a custom rom if and when the BL gets unlocked and people like pongster develop for this device)...
Overall, sexy device but disappointed with such major holes left unattended..
A little offtopic but was a battery related questions and did not wanna start a new thread so posting here -
Does anybody know of if there's any app which can get the battery percent to show in the top bar instead of the default indicator?
Thanks

Any ideas on how I can do that? I tried using current widget but I guess because it's not rooted, current widget showed me a log of 0mA all throughout (yeah rite! hehe)
when I figure it out myself I'll let you know.
Current things I found that killed my battery over night: VTOK & Google Latitude
I went into Settings --> About Phone --> Battery --> Battery Use and checked, and it says display is eating most of my battery.
As far as mine, I get about 12 hours of battery life with standard usage, with the display eating most of the life, so if you're saying the screen is off, you might get different results...

well it certainly sounds like a part of it is specimen issue.. here's my latest experience... last few times i have let it completely discharge and then charge back while the phone was off so i dont mess with it... once 100% charged, i switched the phone on and received a call.. a 25 minute conversation ate away 15% of my battery... LOL...
then, (now it gets better)... in 2 hrs of standby, the phone was at 60% which means it lost another 15% battery in 2 hrs of "standby".. im not sure if i can even call that state a "standby" anymore...
anyways... im wondering if its worth pinning hopes on rom development on our forum or should i just return this and go with something like nexus S which, O well, I can live with... atleast it has a 3300mA batterypack available... what's the use of kickass speeds and features if i have to use a phone like a desktop..
Hey, I have pretty bad battery drain during stand by as well I recommend trying to adjust the sync accounts, esp HTC hub and how often it updates that should improve it...I have a bunch of HTC widgets set up so im suspecting that being the reason for battery drain during stand by also adjust your email update setting accordingly. Every little bit helps!
Battery gauge stuck at 100%
Another one slightly off topic - but why start another battery thread.
It is the second day with my Sensation, and since I took the phone off the charger this morning, the battery gauge has been stuck at 100%. All other apps reading the battery status (e.g. Battery Widget) show the same number. I rebooted the phone multiple times, replaced the battery - nothing - permanent 100%. Has anyone had a similar experience? Did I get a perpetuum mobile ?
BTW the readings were fine yesterday.

Thanks for the pointer.. I will surely try that and see if it makes a difference..
That being said, call me crazy but it just occurs to me that HTC should be putting in some minimal efforts to check off basic quirks like battery consumption and QC. I mean all of us are spending a buttload of money on these devices year over year and then we rely on our devs here to give us basic functionality. Back in the days the reason people joined forums was to tweak devices.. Now it almost feels like we might as well expect only the hardware for the price we pay... disappointed!
Anywho...
I fully charged the phone before I went to bed last night. Eight hours later, the battery is at 10%. Is there something wrong with the battery?
Try using the Spare Parts app to see what's really using the battery in detail.

That's defintiv much too much.
Look at battery stats in settings - phone-info - batterty - drain (or something similar) if any market app drains your battery.
Did you restore system(!)settings with titanium?
Last exit: wipe everything (eg from recovery - I'm not lbc,so it's not my tool ), redownload (md5 sum!?), reflash - and do not install any market apps for the first hours. Battery drain should be max 1% per hour with screen off.

Did you perform the battery re-calibration that is recommended after new ROM install?
see LBC post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14981516&postcount=581 where he corrected the previously written method.
I'd recommend following these instructions and then check battery usage again.
This thread should not have been started here in Development section, but either as post in LBC ROM thread or as new thread in general.

I never ever did such a re-calibration, but perhaps it helps...
Normaly battery indicator is correct after at last 2 days of normal usage (I always plug in over night and never turn off the phone - so seems that it re-calibrates itself)

I had the same problem with lbc 0.5.2. The battery life was like 12 hours normal use.
So i went back to lbc 0.5.1 and everything works fine. Standby time now more then 36 hours.
Maybe this will help you for a while.

I wrote with LBC about it. He told me, that he dont has the problem.

mine drains fast as well...
I have followed all the instructions for a newbie with android in terms of saving battery life, but I still feel that my battery drains fast than the normal. Here is the scenario...
Full charge @ around 10-11pm, with one hour extended charging.
Turn off wi-fi before sleeping @ 11:30pm.
In the morning, battery is at 99% capacity as per battery indicator. Screen is at 25% brightness.
Turn on mobile network connection upon arriving at work @ 7am, there's no wi-fi in the office.
At about 9-10am, battery indicator is at 52% capacity. I normally use my phone in browsing Facebook, playing a li'l poker before working (my office is secluded), some browsing etc. I don't watch videos on my phone.
At around 12noon to 1pm, I connect my phone to USB charging in my PC, battery is at 25% only.
I don't think this is normal. My best guess is that the network connection is draining my battery, but I have no other choice but to use it. I'm need it turned on while in office to be connected to the outside world...
Anyway to extend battery life???

Does this mean you are connecting to data through the mobile network?
Is your wifi connection still switched on as well?
If wifi is searching for a connection all the time this will seriously drain the battery.

Depends on their sync settings. The battery stats app will show you which is the greatest consumer. If it happens to be facebook, dial back the usage. I used IM+ briefly, but uninstalled it. I can't remember why. I'm not on facebook.

I do the calibration after any flashing of custom rom. And it's allways helps to me, battery live is 2-3 days after this, and 1 day or few hours if not calibrated after flashig new rom.
Android 2.3.5 roms drain battery mush lower, and work faster. Flash it and calibrate battery after.

[Q] Batt consumption after OTA update

Did anyone notice a change in battery consumption after the ota update?
Before the update I was getting to 97 percent after about 3 hours of the phone in idle - almost no use at all, no WiFi.
now It got to 94 percent with the same usage apart from 3 photos taken, could be that i'm just too harsh about it.. but still - wanted to check if anyone noticed anything.
edit: also I forgot to mention that I added the "mail" widget to one of the home screens, could be the power taker?
Probably the mail widget and the picture shooting (takes much ressources).
I haven't noticed any increased battery consumption, but it is probably to soon to tell.
Also forgot to mention I added two 'folder organizer' widgets , two folders which contain apps and games.
tomorrow I'll start off by removing them + the email widget and see if there is a difference.

are u really lookin' after for a 3% change in a 3h time ? maaan ... this could be a simple measure problem ... dont it take it too serious. if ya want to test it, maki it at least 10-20h run in standby (airplane mode on) ... it doesn't that accurate.
Yeh yeh I know I know I'm exaggerating.. I'm just becoming insane when it comes to battery life for some reason.. guess it's still the HD2's influence
It shouldn't bother me that much as it is.. I have a charger in my car plus I'm almost never gone more than 9 hours from home, which should be more than enough for the batt to last.. call me crazy it just occupies my mind
Update: strangest thing.... I just checked the phone, didnt turn the screen on since exactly one hour ago, batt was at 83 percent... that's about 9 percent in one hour!!!
removed the folder organizer folders, rebooted the phone, and suddenly received sms messages I should have received last night
now that's becoming something I should put my eye on.......
Update -
Well after another hour, phone only dropped 1 percent, i'll try to isolate the problem by adding the folder organizer widgets back and check in in one hour to see what the batt has to say..
If it'll drop 1-2 percent I guess there was some glitch causing the phone to not get calls\sms's and drop the batt usage about 10% in one hour..
Another thing I'm going to do is let it drain until it turns itself off and then fully charge it, I'v heard you should do that like 5 times when getting a new phone.
Update - 1 percent after another hour + folder organizer folders.. so, guess it was some major batt\radio glitch since last night until i rebooted today (phone was on charge all night)
I noticed that the setting 'Best WiFi performance' adds a serious battery drain when enabled after installing the FOTA, I was loosing 8-9% an hour compared to 3-4% before the update. Disabling this brought me back to 2-3% an hour. I still have a way better WiFi-connectivity compared to before the FOTA with this setting disabled.
I actually never checked that option but yeh I get your point, all is ok now I'll update if anything weird will happen, i'm getting 1-2% an hour

I charged mine up the night before last and have used it for internet, Angry Birds, whilst waiting for my clients and a lot of texting and about 10 mins of calls. This morning It's at 60% as I post this. I've noticed a huge difference since the upgrade and the phone is nowhere near as hot since the upgrade either.

It was a glitch 100%..
yesterday I let the phone drain itself (1day 7 hours - after the incident with the battery gone down 20 percent in 2 hours) then I fully charged it, turned it on last night before went to sleep, phone has been on since last night approx' 12 hours now - gone to 97 percent!! this is awesome!! I'm gonna' let it drain again a couple more times and this all over again
Battery lasts for approx 11-13 hours. Loosing 8-10% each hour with no usage at all.
It is updated. Reset to factory defaults. No extra apps installed. Just gmail, htc hub sync, wifi and that kind of stuff. No friends stream or Facebook or twitter.
What should I do? This is totally unacceptable.
Anyone tried to send it to service for fix?
first of all let the battery drain itself and let the phone shut down on its own, then fully charge the battery while the phone is off, do this for 3-4 times it will increase the battery's life span and charge time.
also check for the "best WIFI performance" as described in my post above, if it's checked uncheck it.
use auto screen brightness.
most important of all and may be causing your issue - check the stats of your charger, the charger I got with my sensation is imho faulty, it makes electricity noises, so I went back to my old HD2 one - perfect - the most important thing to check in your charger is the output voltages - it has to read 5v---1a - nothing different.

I think its better not to use auto screen brightness but use a fixed setting (maybe at around 25-30% brightness level). The reason being, the processor will have to be worked upon constantly to find the optimum brightness level and that would consume power!

Personally I believe the process of identifying the lighting and adapting to it doesn't take much effort from the processor, and based on my phone - the screen does consume energy but it will last 48 hours with the auto brightness setting on so why not use it? it's one of the good options we have in our phones and i really like it that when i go outside to the sun it'll increase the brightness in a millisecond.
the guy from the post above that's getting 10 hours of usage has a problem that I don't believe has something to do with his screen brightness unless he keeps the screen turned on all the time....
I updated to 1.35.xxx.x in the morning and after that the battery meter has only gone down by about 20% in the last 7 hours or so! The phone was off charge in the morning and I downloaded the update over my 2G connection. I also put on a live wallpaper just for fun! No calls made/received but few texts only. No games played. Surfed a little bit on internet (maybe 10 mins).
I'm liking it

[Q] High battery drain (50-100 mA in current widget in sleep)

I have an unlocked T-Mobile Sensation 4G and I've tried a lot of different rom (with Sense and AOSP, GB and ICS).
I had made battery calibration every rom change (Full charge -> wipe battery stats -> do some full discharge/charge circles in normal use).
Every time I have 50-100 mA battery drain in "sleep" according to Current Widget and another battery widget (tried another to commit that Current Widget tells truth).
The phone settings are maximum power-saving:
Fixed small brightness
2g only
Data and auto-sync are turned off
Wifi only if needed
CPU is downclocked to 1.2 gHz
Battery is stock. Phone is two months old.
In my regular usage (1 hours of calls, 10 min wifi) phone dies in 12 hours after full charge.
It is not my first android and I'm not a total noob. My Desire HD with one year old battery live 2 days with my usage.
Also I notice, that sometimes battery left is not accurate and changed after reboot to a bigger value. For example, 80% left -> reboot -> 82% left.
Any suggestion?
Thanks in advance!
Sorry for my poor English...
My suggestions:
1. Use system tuner or a similar app to check up on which apps are draining the most power (keeping the CPU on, etc).
2. If no culprit can be found, full wipe and reflash your ROM, and refrain from downloading any apps, see if that improves battery drain. If it does, slowly install more apps until the battery drain goes up again, and you'll know whats causing it.
3. If reflashing does not help batter life, you might want to try another ROM or kernel.
4. If none of those help, or even if they do, I highly recommend an ANKER battery, it'll at the very least boost your battery life a few more hours.
5. If the battery life still sucks, then it might be a hardware issue and you might want to get it exchanged or whatnot.
I used to have the same high battery drain problem, but after flashing new ROMS/Kernels and switching to an ANKER Battery, I now get 2 days of light/medium use out of my Sensation.
Currently using Insert Coin 4.5.0 with 1.5GHz overclock+undervolt if you're interested in trying.

My suggestions:
1. Use system tuner or a similar app to check up on which apps are draining the most power (keeping the CPU on, etc).

Thank you, I will try.
How much does your battery actually drain overnight? Should be around 1% per hour or less if all is well. Disregard currentwidget in deep sleep mode as the Sensation has a very broken meter.

I'll check it this night.
With jumping battery meter I don't know if these values will be correct. But when the battery value reaches 0% the phone shuts down immediately and don't turn on. So 0% it counts well.
i think im also having the same issue . i checked current usage when in sleep mode.its between 50-80

12hrs with the standard battery is actually very good for a sense build, without sense it should go around 15 - if the battery is in good condition. The battery driver for the sensation is very buggy and you won't get accurate results with any measurement app. Don't worry about the standby or inuse readings as they will both be wrong.
If you're battery drains faster than 1% per hour in standby, assuming you are in a good signal area, then use a system info app to see which program isn't sleeping, then uninstall that program.
But it doesn't sound to me like you have a problem.
According to the log file it drains 1-2% in hour (now I'm using aosp build, MIUI). I think, new Anker battery is the only way. Thanks to all!
Maybe in the future we'll get a more accurate battery driver...

annoying battery life issue

Hi folks,
since some days my battery drives me crazy...
Last week i flashed CM10 by nk111. Nice ROM, but my battery lasted only for some hours with normal usage. So I went back to MIUI...problem stayed.
Yesterday I flashed Jellytime and replaced the battery. The problem stayed as well. At 6 pm battery was full, I restored my apps with Titanium, used it a bit and when I was going to bed at 10 p.m. battery was 81%. Getting up at 5:30 this morning --> battery was 41%.
After the battery was full yesterday night I used display for maybe 10 minutes, why there are 36% battery usage by th display?
WTF happened to my system by flashing CM10 by nk111???
Any help is appreciated!

First, do you have Google now on. It really drains the battery. If that doesn't help install better battery stats and let it go through a couple of cycles, it will help you pinpoint if any apps or wakelocks are draining your battery.

I don't use Google Now. I use the same apps withe the same intensity than in better battery times...
Could you please give me a recommendation for a battery stats tool?
Thanks!

Use the search, you'll find it in both xda and playstore it's called better battery stats

U have an app or something that is running when screen is off.
Find the app and del it.

app called carat could also help you find the battery sucking thing. It's a bit more simple than battery stats, you'll like it if you're not an expert.
it doesn't need to be a new app that is sucking power, it could be the poorly made update of some app that you're using for a long time.
I installed both apps.
But in both I can't find any kind of statistics about consumed power by apps or something similar, am I that stupid?

Bbs needs to run for at least a full battery cycle to give you a clear picture, if recommend running it for at least a day

I get max 24 hours battery life , sometimes 12 hours , so it's not something to worry. If you speak 2-3 hours and WiFi on another 2-3 hours that is the battery în my case 12 hours max.

IT IS something to worry, cause battery behaviour changed dramatically while I didn't change my usage of the phone.
40% battery loss over night should be a clear indication of abnormal behaviour.
@jugg1es: thanks for the advice!

you must run carot a day or two, than it will display some apps on the first page and the approximate battery life you get if you kill them. read the manual also..
Yesterday in the evening I realized a 96% entry in the Partial Wavelocks section - AndroidMediaScanner. I freezed it (I know where my pictures and music is located...), did a full load on the battery and for 4 hours the battery remained at 100%. I really thought the problem is solved...but in the morning...31%
But - the 'Media' entry in the android accu stats is gone, I think this is a partial success.
In the BBS app, there is no remarkable value - the biggest is 3,8%.
When I watch the graphs - WiFi and Awake is nearly completetly blue over the whole night (unfortunately, I can't take screenshots right now for any reason).
I'm a bit helpless right now, will charge the phone now and keep an eye on BBS the next hours/days.
androidmediascanner shouldn't be the bad guy, it's a system app that we all have. maybe your battery is the problem...

I inserted a new battery last week without any change. Don't think both batteries are broken.
The common way to solve this is to do a fresh install. Leave it for a day without any apps yo see if it is ROM related. See if the battery life improve. Install one app per day and monitor your phone awake period with screen on, it should be almost same.

Yesterday night I made a full wipe, installed Jellytime and Gapps and went to sleep...
In the morning --> 67%.
Very odd, normally this would probably indicating a defect battery, but it is new!
Maybe a hardware defect?
Maybe RRU Problem?
Hi,
I have a similar problem here. I was using the desire s for a long timne with stock rom (2.x android), a full battery was enough for ~2 days. Then I rooted the device and installed CM10 (NK111 alpha build).
2 things changed:
The battery is empty after 24h or less.
The wireless network is worse than before. This is my subjective impression but there are places at home or in the office where wifi worked before and stopped working.
I'm starting excessive tests (disabling everything, removing apps, running carat) during xmas holidays to find the reason.
My guess what it might be: to root the device I did a downgrade, including a radio downgrade. Now I run baseband 20.23.30.0802U_38.02.01.11 which is known as "Saga Test RUU" and has the lowest version number of the RRUs listed in the forum. I did not found anything about this in the forum or with google but maybe this is the reason.
My average battery stats with normal use (whole day, used the phone a few minutes):
~30% Display
~25% Wifi
~17% Mobile Standby
~5% Android Os
For comparison, my Motorola Defy has in a similar scenario ~5% Wifi and ~3% Mobile Standby
