[Q] S-OFF with firmware upgrade? - HTC ChaCha

Dear friends,
Something interesting happened to my Cha Cha and I wanted to tell you about it.
I bought it about two months ago from Istanbul, Turkey where I live. But it was a product produced for Romania. (There were no sale from the legal distributor at the time) It was an unopened box and I opened it for the first time.
I bought it as my secondary phone. (Primary is a sgsII)
The first thing I did with the cha cha was to try to root it to be able to use "Market Enabler" (Paid market apps cant be used here). And after some XDA research I realized that my phone was S-ON (I'm 100% sure) and I had to find an XTC Clip to be able to root it. I search for it at the local GSM services etc. but could not find.
The firmware was 1.12.xxxx
A couple of weeks later, I found the battery life insufficent and search for a newer firmware thinking they could be manage to extend the battery life.
I found an Asian firmware RUU_Chacha_hTC_Asia_TW_1.25.709.1_Radio_47.17.35.3033H_7.48.35.14_2_release_199798_signed.exe and installed it.
Then a couple of days later I found a European firmware RUU_Chacha_HTC_Europe_1.33.401.1_Radio_47.17.35.3033H_7.48.35.14_2_release_204385_signed.exe and installed it to get rid of the Asian apps that I dont need.
Then today, I learnt that 1.52 OTA update is ready at XDA. To install it I turn the phone in recovery mode and I saw that it was S-OFF .
I have no idea how it happened but I wrote everything I did above.
By the way , After seeing it S-OFF, I've rooted the Cha Cha using the excellent tutorial prepared at XDA. And I installed Market Enabler.....
How could it be?
Thank you....

looks teasing!!!! but can anyone try this? i will give it a try this weekend

can this be confirmed? maybe the OTA version has a unlocked bootloader...

S-ON users could give it a try and post their results. Would be nice to know.

I am also very curious about it.
If one of the S-On Cha Cha owners can try installing those firmwares I will be happy too.
Thanks...

can you give us the source links where u have downloaded? may be it has some specific patch!!! i wil give it a try
also how did u installed the firmware thru gold card? or directly running the .exe file?
i tried installing RUU_Chacha_hTC_Asia_TW_1.25.709.1_Radio_47.17.35.3 033H_7.48.35.14_2_release_199798_signed.exe and it failed since i am already in 1.33. it wont allow me to flash lower version :-(

i would also try it, with my Polish Orange S-ON ChaCha

The European RUU's you can find in the guide in my signature.

OK, I've got the collection of files.
Now... to be clear and not to mess everything.
My ChaCha is S-ON unbranded stock one with 1.18 bought in polish Orange
I have both windows & linux so what is the best method to apply updates mentioned above? Thank you in advance.

I used only the RUU exe files. No patch or something like that.
I was on 1.12xxxx firmware. Unfortunately I don't remember the exact code.
I used the ruu exe files I mentioned above. But I can't find the download links.
I wrote the exact file names. I think all the downlads with the same name will be the same files.
My phone was unbranded at the begining obviously.
I am very sorry that I can't provide more info.

All the Europe RUU's that were posted on this forum section (HTC ChaCha) are up there on the http server I provided in the guide.
Unfortunately I was not inspired enough to upload other regions. (Downloading from Asia to my Romanian hosting would take a lot anyways).

i believe you cannot update ur firmware thru ruu.exe when your phone is s-on, you have to use gold card to get the update, since you have updated using ruu.exe i doubt it might already s-off before the update.

Here is an explanation:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17951272&postcount=44
But to summarize, under windows:
1-Create a gold card. A gold card is a modified SD card that allows the flashing of an unbrabded signed rom to a branded phone.
2-Connect the phone, run the ruu exe file, it will fail but there will be a c:/ruu_log folder with some text files. Open the most recent one and search for "Temp". Yu'll find something like:
<T065713><DEBUG><CMD>fastboot -s HT16SV409359 flash zip C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\{3C3FDAAB-88EB-4E41-BE57-66DBAFFA8970}\{50F2F878-636A-496F-A7CB-544C067E0C4B}\rom.zip</CMD>
Find this rom.zip.
3- Copy the rom.zip file to your SD card, name it PH06IMG.zip.
4- In your chacha, in settings-> energy disable fastboot.
5-Turn off your phone. Press "Vol-" + Power for 5 seconds. It will boot into bootloader and it will ask you to upgrade. Follow the instructions, you may need to do it more than once if it needs to update the bootloader.
6- When done, delete PH06IMG.zip from the SD.
WARNING: You will lose all your settings.
Please correct me if I made errors.

Are you sure about it?
Is the gold card a must for updating with ruu .exe for unbranded phone ?
As far as I know it is needed if you want to upgrade the firmware of an branded phone. (Vodafone, orange etc.)

The excerpt above states that S-OFF has been acquired from the 1.33 sw version. Do we have users with a lower version around? 1.18/1.21/1.22 to give this a try?

Tester
Hello, I own HTC Chacha with Asian firmware 1.21.
I upgraded to 1.25.xx TW from 1.21.xx like mentioned above and it's still S-ON. After that i upgraded to 1.33 Euro and S-ON is still there. I'm not sure Euro OTA 1.52 will fix S-ON.
Seems 1.52 doesn't fix dialer bug, its quite disappointing. Anyways thank you XDA members.

Debranding the Sensation

Correct me if I'm wrong but if I was to get a Vodafone UK Sensation could I debrand it via the gold card method using the Europe RUU or is the locked bootloader gonna pose an issue?
+1 for an answer. I saw that little box thingy for generating gold cards and wondered if that would work.
I've been waiting for some info to come up on debranding too. But I didnt know if it would be possible until the unbranded handsets come out.

no you wont, since you'll be changing the bootloader. so no chance of jumping ship from voda branding
Thought as much, waiting for the unbranded handsets to be released then I'll get one of them - assuming it's actually any good
Or get your phone from Vodafone unbranded like me!

You won't be changing the bootloader by unbranding it.
If you get a goldcard to work, you just flash over the shipped HTC stock ROM.
However, I have been having problems with the goldcard method. I can create the card, but the CID check still fails when running the ROM off the card.
have u tried running the RUU

No, but I guess it will fail anyway, since the CID check failed for the ROM on the SD card via bootloader, I imagine it will fail via the RUU also.
Does the phone need to be connected via HTC Sync to run an RUU? Or just connected via Charge only?
You can run it in FASTBOOT, going by other HTC handsets

Hmm. Might be worth a try. But I am sure the CID check will fail.
Update: I tried the RUU using the fastboot method, and again, it failed on the CID. Everything was going well until then.
We need someone else to try with a goldcard on their device. Mine doesn't work at all
Has there been any progress with this? I'd really like to debrand if poss.

Which SD card are you using?
I tried to de-brand a friend's Hero once using the Goldcard method. Using his 4GB Kingstone didn't work, then I tried my 2GB SanDisk and it went right through.
Hi.
just some questions to get things straight.
My English isn't "DA bomb"
If i could use the GoldCard method i could install every ROM i like right?
But if there's an other ROM i would like to install can you flash it just like that? Or do i need the GoldCard method again?
Sorry for the misunderstanding but my English isn't perfect
Thanks in advance

Using Goldcard, you can ONLY install signed ROMs, i.e. official ROMs.
But we don't think it works correctly sadly.

I could give it a try... It would be nice to have an official ROM without the Vodafone branding. Thx for clearing it up for me !!
I'm new to HTC, if I wanted to try debranding, where do you get the roms from?
Does the Goldcard-method or other methods work on the sensation ?
Because i bought the sensation yesterday with vodafone branding and i hate it
When the sensation is debranded i can install only official roms in the moment, right ?
I tried again, to flash the HTC 1.27 ROM, and I get a signature error. I get a CID error with the HTC 1.24 ROM. That's using a 2GB Kingston SD card for my goldcard. I'm starting to think it doesn't work
Where did you get the roms from?
I dont even know where to start looking, is there a site like samfirmwares for htc?
EDIT:
nmv just found the thread in the dev section on here.

Command Error when changing CID

Hi folks,
I have unlocked and s-offd my Voda HTC Chacha.. installed a WWE Rom but havent recieved any OTA since then.. I am on 1.19 and there is a 1.54 OTA out..
just checked the CID through adb and its set to Super CID 11111111 instead of generic HTC__001. Tried changing it but I get Command Error. Any idea or solution for this?
Also, Is this the reason why no OTA are showing up?
If no, please advise how can I update the phone via OTA
Many thanks
What's your full version number? Afaik, 1.19 isn't a WWE ROM, it's Vodafone UK

Here are the full details mate:
Android 2.3.3
Software 1.19.206.2
Baseband 47.14.35.3030h_7.47.35.17
Kernel 2.6.35.10-g8db500e
cheers
Searching "1.19.206.2" on Google brings me back to a thread here in XDA's Chacha section saying it's an O2 ROM - so you see any O2 apps or bootanimations? I've heard that O2 don't actually "brand" their Android phones with apps, but still make all updates go through them.
EDIT: Yup, 1.19.206.1/2 is an O2-UK ROM - I found this out from this forum thread: http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/7588766-post44.html
RUU_Chacha_O2_UK_1.19.206.1_Radio_47.14.35.3030H_7 .47.35.17_release_195486_signed.exe
RUU_Chacha_O2_UK_1.19.206.2_Radio_47.14.35.3030H_7 .47.35.17_release_197936_signed.exe
As you can see, your software number refers to 1 of 2 O2 UK RUUs
You should flash the 1.33.401.1 RUU from this thread, then see if you get an OTA update to 1.52.401.1 - if not, try downloading it from this thread and apply it via stock Recovery, which is reported to work if you're S-OFF and have a correct CID (HTC__001 for example) or SuperCID.

Fantastic mate, downloaded it as we speak..
not sure how it stayed on 1.19 as after I used XTC Clip, the logos and boot image were gone so I assumed I had a stock rom.. oh well.. everyday is a learning day..
I will let you know how I get on..
cheers for your help mate..
Update... Installed the 1.33 which then took the OTA update which is all good... However I still can't change the CID to HTC__001.. (currently set at 1111111)
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using Tapatalk
why you like to change the CID?
SUPER-CID (1111111) might have set during S-off thru xtc clip.... SUPER-CID (1111111) signifies you device is universal device, which enables to flash all languages/APN/other settings in your phone

True, but it forces non-qwerty keyboard users to manually modify the layout in /system/usr/
as described here , because CID is taken into account on default layout.
Once you know the trick, it's OK, but really annoying to do every time you install a new ROM

[Q] 4.04 OTA Update for ROGER001?

I bought one S from Fido Canada. And unlocked rooted and disables many start-up apps. But I'm not sure if I can get OTA update.
CID is ROGER001
Android version 4.03
Software number 1.84.631.9
Anyone whose CID is ROGER001 can help me ?
You need to be completely stock (unrooted, with all Rogers crapware intact) for an OTA to work, even if it is offered to you.
As an aside, the 4.0.4 update has not been pushed out to the Bell/Virgin, Rogers/Fido, or TELUS/Koodo One S as of yet. I'm not even sure if the One S on Mobilicity, Wind, or Videotron shipped with it as the T-Mobile USA version hasn't received the update yet.

I was wondering the same thing and after lots of internet reasearch i figured out 3 things:
1- The only ones having the 4.04 update are international version and T-mobile versions of HTC OneS
2- Canadian carriers are so freaking lazy as to getting out updates
3- If you want the update you need to change to super cid with root (the 111111 cid)and get the international OTA
=> However ive seen some people reporting having network problems after updating
So yea...it sucks..im having the same problem here so i feel you bro
I managed to unlock the bootloader easily, and I thought that would do the trick and let me update my phone...nope. Is there any way for me to be able to receive ota updates straight from HTC rather than having to wait for fido to smarten up? I remember on my sgs I could flash the international rom. I'm not too familiar with ruu, can someone help me out?

I've been looking for it as well.
Anybody ?
I'm with FIDO and I have updated my phone succesfully to Jelly Bean. like mentioned above, I couldn't find an RUU that would work with my phone.
So, in order to use the Rogers RUU file that is available, you have to downgrade your HBOOT. Its a bit scary of a process the first time around. But has worked perfectly several times for me now. Just follow the instructions exactly!
After that, you have to flash a stock rom, also widely available, in TWRP (or CWM). Then relock your bootloader. Then run the RUU!
That works for me! :good:

Thanks mate but they only have RUU_Ville_U_Rogers_WWE_1.70 which has hboot 1.06. Hboot downgrade seems to be the only solution so far.
You can try one of the sense based custom ROMs. Then you don't have to go through all the trouble of downgrading. If, you're concerned about WiFi not working, then you can try my fix

[Q] RUU to go back stock

I know there are several threads like this one but I prefer not to write another RUU request while you're answering to another user
So, I got a HTC One S S3 yesterday... I began to unlock it because I wanted to change its CID. I found that in the S3 version the CID can't be changed (still) when I had already installed the TWRP Recovery.
Now I'd like to go back to stock, but there is not a RUU compatible with my device: It has VODAP102 as CID, but the RUU for Vodafone AT here doesn't work. I found the kernel source for the same software version I have in htcdev.com, my question is: is it possible to build a RUU or at least a boot.img from it?
The sources can be found in htcdev /devcenter/downloads (sorry but being new I can't post direct links!), HTC One S as Device, Vodafone as Carrier and UK -
1.11.161.133 as software version. Actually I am in Italy, but the software and kernel version are exactly the same.
Thank you in advance.
Bump to first page and a little addendum:
I've read again all the possibilities I have with this phone, and if I have understood accurately then I'm forced to go back to stock, roms like the ThickDroid seem to require a non-branded CID, but that's the point... it is the CID that's compelling me to maintain this original Vodafone software, otherwise I would have already installed the HTC "basic" rom.
Am I missing something?
Thank you again!
Have you tried looking on HTCRUU.COM?
Check your radio id on the bootloader screen then flash the appropriate ROM

Yes I checked, but they have just unbranded RUUs, here in the forum there's one RUU for Vodafone but the region isn't the same as mine.
I've read that it is possible to flash an OTA update deleting the string that checks the CID - I'll have to take a look about that (moreover, it seems very difficult to find .zip OTA updates for this phone...).
Nevertheless I'd like to find this RUU update too - it is an important option too. So... bump to first page.

[Q] RUU for ONE S Dutch vodafone branded

I am having some troubles with finding the proper RUU for my phone.
I have a dutch vodafone branded phone which I rooted and flashed with CWM. I am still on 1.53 and i want to upgrade to 1.78 because of the home-screen button bug. I hope the OTA update fixes it.
In order to update my phone, I need to revert to stock and therefore I need the original shipped RUU .
Can i use the "RUU_Ville_U_Vodafone_UK_1.78.161.2_Radio_0.16.31501S.17_2_10.23.31501S.10L_release_258386_signed" ? I know this is UK version but there seems to be no NL version and my phones also downloads OTA_VIlle_U_Vodafone_UK_1.78 itself. So I figured i could also use the UK RUU. Is this correct?
Thank you in advance.
Anybody who knows the answer?

Well you should probably Run the RUU.exe without connecting the phone. When it runs, it places a "firmware.zip" in a temporary folder (please search for the exact location of the temporary folder as I don't exactly remember it). Open the firmware.zip file to view its contents. It should have a "android-info.txt". Open it and you'll see the supported CID. If it matches with your phone CID, you're good to go.
To get your phone CID, use CID GETTER from store. It shows CID in red at the top of the app.

Thank you. I read about that but I couldn't find the firmware.zip. I took a guess and it turned out that the RUU is correct. So for other dutch users on this forum: I can confirm that 1.78 UK Vodafone RUU works on dutch vodafone branded phones.
