I am looking at purchasing a new Tablet, and the one I really want does not offer mobile broadband. Is there a clean cut way to get my Arrive to act as a mobile WIFi hot spot?
Depends on the Phone
Using Windows Phone as hotspot is only in hands of Operator and is not available like in some of the Android Phone.
I saw a demo of Internet Connection sharing was made possible using some tools on Omnia 7.
i dont think its possible, Microsoft does not anounce this feature.
Any new updates on this issue? Traveling a lot and wifi isn't always available for my laptop, wireless broadband is a killer!

When you visit a hotspot it will has for your phone number which my guess is to verify if you have the iphone plan on your line.
I have DSL from AT&T for my home computer internet. I use the "pro" version of DSL which gives me the Free WIFI access for my laptop and/or cell phone when I'm mobile. I have my cellular service with Verizon Wireless for my XV6800 and can use wifi on that phone free at any AT&T sponsored WIFI hotspot including many MickeyDee's or Startucks, Barnes & Noble, etc., etc. I can use my laptop with WIFI there as well, independently of each other.

I too have the fastest DSL from AT&T and I too get free wifi from AT&T hotspots. I have an iPhone 3G and also a Diamond (waiting for the Touch Pro "AT&T Fuze" to purchase) and I use free wifi even from before the release to iPhone users.
The iPhone and BlackBerry have created a class of know-it-alls who can prove their point about anything, be it geography, history or cooties, thanks to their mobile Internet connections. But the rest of us had refuge: Sometimes, they were out of range of a quick cell network.
how does ATT know that some people have iphones? I've never told them what kind of phone I have.
What if my friend gives me his iphone, how does ATT know that I have one?
I think the IMEI would rat you out or maybe even the contract you own.

Just double checking to see if this was possible on non-iphones...
its possible to change your imei but it is illegal to do so most places, AND if you ever got caught with it you would probably look REALLY suspicious, as in a terrorist
I live in Canada but Rogers has a unlimited web-browsing plan for $7 and ppl have forums on the internet talking about spoofing your phone to look/communicate like another phone (the iphone in this case).
I'll try finding the link.
Hi i have mobile wifi router installed on my phone (came with duttys rom) and i was wondering if using it my network could tell and charge me extra?
I have an unlimited data plan but i know I could pay an extra £10 and then my phone could be used as a mobile boradband device, does this mean that if i try to use the mobile wifi router program that my carrier would be able to tell and block it or charge me extra?
Also is there a way to share the phone connection with a pc without using wifi and without having to buy the networks extra mobile boradband package because I will almost never use it but its good to know i have the option if i go on holiday or whatever, maybe i want to prows the web in the garden soemthing like that
no wifi works even if you don't have a sim card in the phone
just like pda's with wifi and no phone
just like your laptop connecting with wifi to the router
just like your desktop connecting with wifi or cable to the router
no its not that, mobile wifi router converts your phone into a router so your laptop/whatever can connect to it and use its data connection to connect to the internet, I was just wondering if doing this the network can tell and then charge me extra as they usually charge for using your phone as an internet access point
the connection from the phone to the laptop or computer is free anything wifi
the cost to go onto internet will however depend on your satat rates, just to be sure id ask your operator
Hi thanks for trying to help, but thats not what I was asking. I know wifi connections are free what I was asking is if my operator will be able to tell the difference between my phone using its data connection and my laptop using my phones data connection.
The reason I ask is that I have unlimited data for my phone.
but
you can pay extra money to upgrade your account to allow your phone to be used as a mobile broadband dongle
but if they can't tell the difference between phone using its data and pc using its data then there is no need to pay the extra money.
is this the case or am i missing something
Depending on your operator, there could be a max of MB's. So it might be 500 MB/month, but also unlimited internet. With that, you are able to use it without any extra costs.
Is it possible to somewhat put up a wifi network on your phone via some program (WiFi Router is one I think) and connect to it and use it ON your phone?
aaah teething
as far as I know they should not be able to detect it
but I could be mistaken
If the usage is large 500MB/month, carrier might suspect unusual activity. teething is paid service with some carriers.
I have a G1 tethered on T-mobile USA. I have talked to customer service. They said they do not support tethering but that it is not illegal. Their solution is to allow a soft cap of 10gb of data service with their unlimited plan and once you reach the cap they throttle the internet speed down from 3g to 2g levels. Not to horrible. I play all my online games with my G1 connection, Counter Strike Source, Perfect World International, Flyff, and download quite a bit of music and usually only reach about 300mb a day which gives me a full month of service before i reach that cap. And at the start of the new month I get reset.
I´m in the same situation.
I´ve got an unlimited data plan, which covers phone/PDA use, but EXCLUDES using the device as a modem for a PC/Laptop (tethering).
I´ve tethered it ocasionally, and it worked.
My carrier didnt charge me extra, nor blocked. BUT i know the risk exists. I´ve tried to research.
What i read is that carrier COULD tell if you are tethering by traffic analysis (one way is looking the user agent of your web pages request, which identifies yor browser), but that this traffic analysys is not practical, and most carriers dont do it....by now.
So of you tether ocasionally, you are safe.....today, ....until carriers perceive there is a number significant enough to make profits,of people tethering under a data plan intented just for phone use, then they can start charging you.

ha nice, well im gonna give it a go anyway and see what happens, its just funny that they specifically advertise to upgrade your account to be able to do this as if they can somehow tell. I dunno what mobile boradband is like in the us but in the uk there advertising it all over the place as if its someting people really need instead of something that is ocasionally useful, apart from in your case its mad how much you do through your phone.

thanks for this, if the only thing they can do to check is by the web requests of your browser surely there is a way to pretend to be opera mobile for example which should receive the full web anyway. Anyway as you say I won;t be using it much if at all so if i do fancy it i think ill just take the risk and see what happens worse they can do is charge me a little extra and i may even be able to avoid that by pleeding ignorance

I don't quite understand this question, you could use the program i mentioned to make your phone into a wifi access point and use its data connection to the internet then anything you like could then connect to it e.g. another phone, psp, ps3 laptop .....
is that what you ment?
(Q) Why doesn't my Captivate pick up wireless signal from my old Fuse/Touch Pro when it is enbled for wireless access point?
Vice Versa. Captivate signals can't be access through my Nexus One. However, using Barnacle and modifying my laptop to mtu 1250, it connects. I like to play games on my Captivate. Use the phone as a Portable Game Player. But it will not connect to any of my devices. Any idea how to fix this issue? I don't want to pull out my sim card everytime i use the captivate.
The mobile hotspot on your fuse creates an ad-hoc network. Afik the galaxy can't see ad-hoc networks.

Even my old iphone 3g was able to find the signal. Is there a way that it can be recognized. i don't have wifi access at work so I use the fuse as my mobile access point. sometimes the phone get so hot using the 3g data. the antenna heats the chit out of the phone. i don't want to put through my new phone the same way but i want to use it. and i like to somehow use it using the 3g off of my fuse.

There is currently a command line hack to force the captivate to recognize an ad-hoc network, but from what I hear it's extremely buggy and there is no UI. It's going to be a while before it gets incorporated into the developers' to-do lists.
Haven't tried yet but how hot does n1 get when using as mobile hot spot. Haven't had the n1 too long so I am not sure. I really don't want to but might try it tomorrow.

I'm curious to use the Mobile AP but not sure if AT&T will charge me extra per month for it. Does anyone know if they do charge extra for using this option or the USB Tethering?
This past weekend I hooked my fuze to the captivate. Use pre8. Just heard that there is a pre9 out. Those guys have coded their a$$ off for us. Use it, works beautifully

And to connect it to the fuze signal, can't think of the cab, but it's a new comm manager that allows this. I'll look on my fuze for the name.
All the stuff is available here on xda.

as long as you don't go over your data usage cap you'll be ok. if your going to use it alot there is a tethering package think it is 60 bucks. i got lucky i am grandfathered in under the old iphone unlimited package so thanks at&t for all the free usage.
Just thought I would make a topic to see which one of the GT7+ models are better. what's everyone opinion about all the models. wifi only v.s 3g.. Having an IR blaster v.s not having one.
I have the P6210
1- I like having the option of having the IR but what's the point? There is not really any apps out there that work with it, plus the app that comes with the tab doesn't work on older TVs so I never use it.
2- Since the one I have is wifi only after having it for a few months now I wish I had the 3g version. I bought the 7 inch for portability but once I leave my house it becomes an oversized gaming device, since there's not much I can do without internet connection. so I end up tethering it to my phone which kills the battery extremely fast.
so what's your opinion?

I personally think that connectivity is the key of all these devices. Wifi only just does not make any sense to me. 3G all the way...
I got the wifi version and bluetooth tether to phone for data. Why would I want two data charges?

I second this.. I always have my phone around if I need to tether the tab. The additional cost of the device paired with the data plan is not worth it

I was thinking about that, meaning tethering to a phone... Not everyone can tether to there phone some people have older phones that don't support tethering... plus you can't tether unless your phone is rooted (which mine is of course) without getting a really big phone bill, as far as I know but I could be wrong. Wifi only its not to bad, I guess I can carry around a cell phone charger (since tethering kills my battery) rather than paying a extra data charge

This is why I love NOT living in the USA.
It only costs me 10GBP/month for unlimited data on my GT-P6200.

Same here in Honduras, 30 $ a month unlimited 3G , and I use my P6200 as my primary and only phone
WiFi or 3G
The WiFi or 3G argument depends on how you intend to use your tab. I bought the WiFi only tab because I honestly have no use for 3G on my tab. It would just be another bill. I pretty much only use my tab where I have access to WiFi as it is though. I had bought it because I was getting tired of dragging my laptop into meetings or around the office for various reasons. We have full WiFi coverage everywhere at work so the tab comes in handy for quick checking of my mail or my calendar and it is perfect for taking notes and such in meetings. When I go home, the tab comes home with me and once at home I connect it to my WiFi. If I am out and about town and need to check my e-mail or checkout something on the Internet I just use my smartphone and usually do not have my tab with me anyway when doing things out and about. About the only other time I bring my tab with me is if I am headed over to a friends for awhile. All of my friends have WiFi so WiFi only is still not an issue. So as you can see, at least in my case 3G would just be a needless and unwanted monthly bill.

May I ask how much you paid for your Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus?
I personally think 3G on tablets is a waste of money (keyword: personally). I'm never going to pull out my 7" tablet in the middle of the street to check something when I also have a smartphone. And if I'm sitting down somewhere, most likely there'll be Wifi.
Hi,
I have been searching for around 3 months on and off for this with no luck so I figured I would ask.
I would like to use my android phone to make calls through a dumbphone through bluetooth. I would like to drop mine and my wife's data plans to save $720 per year. But since we have smart phones, Verizon will not let us keep using our smartphones with no data plan and only stick with wifi. We have wifi access almost everywhere we go(home, work, restaurants, church, etc.) and would be fine sticking with wifi for internet.
So here is what I am thinking. Get the smallest dumbphone with bluetooth I can find, use that for my verizon plan. Then use my Droid 2 to control that phone, i.e. send and recieve calls/texts.
Has anyone seen this done or do I need to start getting familiar with the android SDK start playing with the android bluetooth stack?
Thanks,
