[Q] Can I install MIUI-XJ over stock MIUI on Bravo (Without data wipe) - General Questions and Answers

I'm not sure if this is supposed to go here, but I want to install MIUI-XJ on my HTC Desire GSM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=957291
I really know nothing about when wiping is necessary, I know it's good to wipe cache to speed up the phone but I'm always advised to wipe my data/factory reset when installing a new rom.
I'm wondering, when installing MIUI-XJ over stock MIUI without flashing, do I really need to factory reset?
I don't have many apps installed, just I want to know when and why it is really necessary.
Thanks for any feedback <3

I'll have a look around

[Q] question about wiping phone before installing rom

I have looked at the forums for a long time tonight and im pretty sure the answer is somewhere but i havnt found it. I am trying to install the LeeDroid Rom, this is the first time I have ever rooted a phone or considered installed a custom rom. I am confused about the wiping data portion. I installed the Super Wipe" script but i havnt ran it yet. My question is, do I need to wipe anything else? Like I see an option to wipe cache partition - do I need to do this also? Or will super wipe clean it all out?
Super wipe should take care of it all.
Sent from my Dell Streak 7
Ensure you have backed up everything (using Titanium, clockwork, etc)
then flash Super Wipe, this should get rid of everything.
Flash your ROM (check MD5 first) and any chosen MODS (such as no-sense, CRT screen etc)
Then wipe cache and davlik cache, re-boot and everything should be sweet!
alright thank you

[Q] Backup every time I flash a rom?

Hello,
I flashed CWM and did a full system backup/system wipe/cache wipe then installed xboarders 1.2.2 rom for the first time. I'm rooted! woohoo! I want to install eaglesblood new rom now. My question is when installing a new rom is it recommended to do a full backup or is one time enough? Thank you for any help as I am a newbie at this.
I always keep at least one or 2 backups of setups that I know work. That way if I screw something up while tinkering with my phone I always have a working backup to fall back on.
So yes, its recommended to keep a good backup on hand. You don't necessarily need to backup every time though. I just make sure I backup my texts before I flash anything. I hate losing those.
What you DO NEED to do EVERY TIME you flash between completely different roms is do a full wipe before you flash the new rom. If you're only updating to a new version of the same rom then a full wipe isn't necessary.

Thanks for your help! Also, when doing a full wipe do I need to do a dalvik wipe as well in the advanced settings in CWM?

I always do. It certainly wont hurt anything if you do. Just remember the first boot after clearing dalvik cache usually takes a little longer than normal because the phone has to rebuild the dalvik cache. Don't panic if it takes a few minutes even to boot. After the first time it wont take as long.

factory reset?

I have a question that needs an answer
I installed VU on my inspire 4g. i have all my contacts on it and such . however i am giving that phone to my wife now. can i do a factory restore and it will restore it to the way VU was originaly installed without my apps and my contacts?
thanks !
Yes you can, just either do the wipe user data option from clockworkmod recovery, or do a factory reset from the options.
thank you !

No don't do that. Custom roms install things that will be deleted if you factory reset. Then it will bootloop or be missing apps do a master clear and then reflash the rom
what is the master clear? how do you do that? and you say flash the ROM, do you mean the stock ROM from HTC?

That depends on which rom she wants. If its her first android rom and you want to shoot for a stock feel then yes do the stock HTC rom. If she is comfortable with a custom rom then do a full wipe and then reinstall VU. Custom roms install things to the data partition which gets wiped when you do a factory reset causing apps to force close or not be there and depending on the custom tweaks it can also cause a bootloop at times.

[Q] how to wipe?

hi,
i just rooted my mz601 3.2 and i want to install the ics everest.
can someone please let me know how i can wipe the xoom prior the ics flash?
i have cwm recovery installed .
many thanks!!
Boot into recovery you'll find a list of options there. It would also be a good idea to read "Xoom Heaven" posted in the general section first.
Your going to have to Wipe Data and factory Reset, Wipe Cache partition than scroll to advanced and Wipe the Dalvik Cache. After that go to Install zip from SD card.
thanks Guys,
i manage to install the Ics and everything is fine.
what cache / data do i need to wipe when i will flash an updated ics rom?
do i stiil need to wipe all of the above and loose my aps and data again?
thanks!!
I Personally like to do the full wipe thing, just as you did before. Because that's one less thing you don't have to consider when having problems.

What to wipe when flashing custom rom?

Hello all. I know this is a noob question and Im sorry, but I need to ask.
When Im flashing a custom rom (going to try EOS again) what exactly do I need to wipe?
Im using TWRP. I know that I need to wipe the Cache, Dalvik Cache and system. Do I also choose the Factory Reset option? How about Internal Storage? Then there is the Format Data option. Which of these should I do?

If you do a factory reset, you don't have to worry about wiping anything else.
As for what to wipe for installing a custom ROM, it depends. EOS recommends a factory reset when you are flashing their ROMs going from any other type of ROM, including stock. If your on ICS, to jellybean, factory reset. 4.1 to 4.2, factory reset. One nightly to the newer one, you don't have too.
Internal storage is not something you want to wipe... that is any pictures, files, music etc. etc. that you have on the tablet, it will be the same as when you unlock the bootloader, you lose EVERYTHING!! Factory reset, you won't lose anything that isn't on the system partition.
Make sure you are on the latest version of the recommended recoveries
Perfect. The information you gave is exactly what I needed. Thanks Draxin.
