Mp4 video playback - Thunderbolt General

This may be a more general issue affecting other android phones as well but for a long time now I've had issues playing mp4 format videos. The sound is perfect but the video plays back abominable slow so they are completely out of sync. I wanted to post here to see if anyone else has any ideas on this. I've tried multiple players including rockplayer, moboplayer, stock player, vplayer and many others and I just can't get them to play right. All other formats play without any issues.. flv ..mov ..avi ..xvid..mkv.. all are great.. just not mp4. Please if anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate a hand with this...thanx!

im not sure if its just because of the hardware on the Thunderbolt but I have the same issues aswell. my workaround is overclocking as well as using good apps like MX Video Player & if you are playing 720P videos check out Dice Player.

Appreciate the response. I'll try out those players as well. What are you overclocking to? I'm usually at about 368 low end and 1.2 high end I think right now using the bamf tools to do it on bamf forever cubed rom.

regardless of the rom, I always set low to 245 and high about 1.2 if its an aosp rom and 1.4 if its sense based. I don't like to go much higher as I've had my battery get very hot and battery life goes down a bit also.

I can't go below 368 on mine or phone will do random shutdowns. I try to use my phone and it was powered off. As soon as I moved it back to 368 never happened again.

Bamf forever cubed settings won't allow me to overclock past 1ghz or very close.. going to look again... Are either of you using setcpu or some other app to overclock?

i use setcpu for all roms(even if they come with bamf settings, cyanogen settings, etc). if it's not letting you go past 1ghz then you'll have to install a kernal that will. i was recently using that bamf soab rom and they had an imogean(sp?) kernal for it in the same thread. you can either check bamf's thread for a specific kernal they recommend or check here on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1249328

Eh just checked setcpu and it does the same... Neither are allowing me to go past 1024000 and minimum is 245768. Not being allowed to clock it past up to 1.4 which is weird because I know I've done so on past Roms.. maybe it's just this rom? I'm using Bamf Forever Cubed with the stock kernel it came with. Any suggestions on why I'm being locked down to a top end overclock of 1024000?..
Sent from my ADR6400L using xda premium

Sorry just posted my response as you responded.. yeah I have the 3 optional variations of the Imoseyen kernel that works with his rom.. it was a stock, learn and 368 something... Maybe I'll switch and try them out instead...kinda odd being locked down to 1024000 when the phone can handle up to 1.4..

You are wasting your (cpu) time if you are playing anything more than 480p on it. In landscape mode you only have 480 pixels vertically, so playing a higher rez movie means you are making it scale on the fly and probably dealing with a higher bitrate on the source file as well.

personally, I download a lot of shows with my phone and watch them on the phone. Lots of times(especially lately) I will find stuff only available in 720P.
why no tv?... well, when you drive limos you can't always just go back home in between jobs & I don't want to get a big ol' inverter and bring my laptop.

Interesting. I convert a lot of dvds to mp4 format to watch on my phone and have never had any playback issues. Phone running the latest leak, rooted and debloated of coarse. Unfortunately, the AOSP roms don't have nfl network.
I also use system panel to kill all running tasks before playing any videos. All videos are played on Vplayer and I doubt any of them are 720p. Seems like overkill to me.

[Q] Audio lag in video

Alright, I just flashed the latest and greatest Bali kernel to my phone, and noticed that when I take a video with the camcorder at any resolution i get an audio lag on play back in the stock video player and double twist. When I play them on my computer or upload them to Youtube, the lag is gone.
Curiously, I had this problem before I flashed the kernel, but all the videos I had prior to the flashing are now fixed in that respect. The only difference is I can see and hear the difference while the video is recording.
I've seen posts about this for the I9000 as well as other phones, but none for this specific phone, on top of there being virtually no known fix to my knowledge. I would really appreciate any insight on this topic. I know it isn't being caused by the kernel. Can anyone shed some light on this problem?
I also get that problem but i think i also noticed that problem with stock...my brother's Vibrant also had that problem on stock.. idk why they have that issue
Well I am going to flash a rom on here tonight and see if that yields any results.

try going into cwm --> advanced --> fix permissions. if not. look into icbnb or the audiophile roms. they have a fix for 1080p recording.
Yea..some roms dont have the audio lag..abd audiophile doesnt have 1080p recording yet

Well I just got around to flashing ICBINB with theme. Still got the problem. Thanks for the tips Jager, but something is still up. :\
On a happier note, I would like to thank everyone who develops on this phone. I couldn't be happier with ICBINB, and the honeycomb theme for that matter. It's just wonderful.
Keep up the good work.

I just said that there wasn't 1080p because someone had said that there was a "fix for 1080p"... didn't mean to say it as rushing you to finish it faster.. thanks for working on it though

No rush Raver.
but alas, double twist has been uninstalled. I even tried a few players from the market to no avail. Thanks though.
I'm am curious to know if this miracle of 1080 on our phones would fix such a problem. I bid you good luck on your endeavors Mr. Raver. As for me, I shall try to dig deeper into this problem.

[Q] Google Music Beta

Is anyone using this service through google and having issues? I've had it running on Wildhero and AOSP GB roms for the past week or so, and it seems glitchy at best random pauses even though the songs seem to be fully buffered. Service issue or my little hero doing the best it can issue?
Just started using it and its working good for me. All my music streams fine. Have you checked to make sure your kernel isn't clocked too low? 352 usually is the lowest to run music smoothly

[Q] How good does .avi files play?

I'm considering buying a Xoom, and I've been trying to read up on it, and it seems as though video playback has been discussed to great extent. Most of what I've read is about HD files (.mkv).
How is the video playback of .avi files on the stock player?
If it sucks, would you recommend any other apps? Or would I need to re-encode them?
I will use this when travelling, so I can't use any streaming software from my regular pc.
I have no problem with rooting and installing custom ROMs if that would improve anything!
Thank you!
Is it so much of a diffference it's worth doing it? Is it unwatchable if you don't?

In my opinion it is not worth doing. Just download Mobo Player from the market and you'll be fine. Not had 1 .avi that would not work with Mobo, nor noticed any difference in the quality.
No issues here either, there are a few things that I've reencoded due to size but not found any issues..
fyi I've been using freemaker video converter to reencode stuff if it needed doing.
On the xoom page on motos website it says that .ago is not nativly supported by the android OS, and that using decoders may reduce battery time if its not done on a hardware level. Any of you having trouble with battery life?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Mobo does both hardware and software rendering and there are other players on the market that will use hardware rendering.
As for battery life, I cant honestly say that I have seen a decrease that would make a difference to my useage.
Thank you all!

ROM/KERNEL Combo that doesn't introduce skipping music?

Howdy all, after some advice please. Been trying a few different ROM'S & Kernels and can't find a combination that doesn't skip while playing music. Maybe I have a dud phone? It is pretty random and not all the time but is very annoying.
Baseband V20c currently using meemo's DNA GB 3.3.3 ROM with samno's new super stock Kernel.
Sent from my skipping LG-P920 using XDA
Probably has more to do with sd card and read ahead speeds/caching
Try an app like SD speed increase and try different settings to see which works best. 4096 works best for me. Also minimizes micro skips in video recording too...
Thanks mate will try that, had myself convinced it was from using sd boost at one stage!
Sent from my LG-P920 using XDA
Going to jinx myself but I think it is my external sd card. Bummer so much for getting a 32GB class 10 card. Music hasn't skipped once from the internal card.
Ahhh, would you believe it skipped while typing this!
Think I need a new phone.
Sent from my LG-P920 using XDA
Still happening
I have flashed a heap of different ROM's and Kernel's to no avail. Intermittent skipping on internal and external cards.
Can the baseband effect this? I am on V20c and maybe that is why the ROM/Kernel's are playing up?
Don't want to go to cyanogenmod (loose 3D) but it is the one that seems to work best.
Maybe I need to get a Gnote and just keep the O3D as a 3D camera.
Any ideas, willing to try almost anything now, love my tunes and it is driving me crazy
From what I know, it can't be the baseband. It only manage your network, I think. Flashing rom with wrong baseband-the only effect is, you don't have network.
Well been running cyanogenmod now and not one skip. DSP manager is pretty great as well. Might just have to make do with out the 3d I guess.

Couldn't help myself, flashed back to stock and so far so good. Looks like no ROM's for me for a while, well at least until ICS!
Try Promethius ROM + Promethius kernel and set longer audio buffer in PowerAMP (+750ms). Works for me.

Well stock didn't seem to last to long without a skip!
Switched to Power Amp on your suggestion and put both the options for audio skip (buffer & priority) on full and it seems to have done the trick!
Sent from my LG-P920 using xda app-developers app
Just wanted to share my two cents... I love the app called n7player... it has a neat feature for streaming music to itself to fix the skip issue... it works great but it eats battery...
Then one day I tried playing some music that was FLAC format... where a single 3 min song takes up like 25 megabytes...
And I had to download a special app that could play flac. And I am amazed that a 25 mgbyte file plays flawlessly with out a single skip... but standard mp3 at about 5 mgbytes skips every few seconds...
So I tried this with several other audio formats... from .wav to .wma to .mpg and they all played fine
All played from my ext SD by the way.. so I don't think it is a problem with read write speed..
Whichever leads me to question...
Anyone know if our phones have a hard time decoding/extracting mp3 compressed audio

Well balls, my phone has random skipping with flac as well.

Rant
I feel as if the o3d was rushed, like they had the hardware part down but not the software part. So we got beta software they released it then they lost intrest in the o3d ($800 from me) they released other phones and then came ics and they were like, oh sh!t lets give them gb yeah that should keep them busy till the next version of android.
We gonna get ics when all the other devices spit on ics and look at it with shame ang lg will be like look theres ics we promised you there it is and will be like, but but what about jellybean which they will respond.. whoa we never said anything about jellybean buy the new 2013 Optimus 3d maX Ultra With ICS then you might get jellybean when android 5.0 comes out lol.
went off topic Also on the Gnexus so it depends i use to have stuttering when i had crossfade on and the stock player has never stuttered.
CyanogenMod works great, except for the fact that when I use it in my car through aux it pauses itself and even when it does play it sounds stuffed!
Can't win with this thing.
Will keep posting any updates here just in case someone else is in the same boat,

stock noticed the stuttering occurred during me touching the captive buttons and the captive buttons lighting up and after the have gone off after switching the feedback of the stuttering hasn't happened tried inducing skipping in poweramp by skipping through songs fast and pushing power on and off nothing happened. maybe its a voltage control issue.
My music 320kbps 48khz 3-9 min
128 kbps 44khz mixes
192 kbps
haven't tested flac
try this also see if it helps https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.bluesteel.cka&hl=en
The only thing that works is cyanogenmod. Just don't turn the volume up past 75% when using auxiliary out (car etc) as it pauses by itself. Loud as at 75% anyway and no skipping / glitching while playing music!

Any fix for Choppy video?

Currently I'm running Tweaked 2.2, EXT4, and 5/24 PBJ kernel. I'm generally not overclocking, but I've also tried 1.2Ghz.
Video playback on webpages very choppy and unwatchable (I've tried stock browser, skyfire, firefox, boat, opera, etc, etc) . Video's on YouTube play great.
Is it a lack of memory problem? Is everyone seeing the same thing?
Is it with Flash or a mobile stream? I found that Flash usually requires a higher clock speed to play videos efficiently. Have you tried a higher clock speed? What governor are you usong?

It an option of dolfin browser. It didn't help my choppy video issue.

The newer (may releases) PBJ kernels never did work quite right for me. At least in my case, the cache to SD option in dolphin was the difference between smooth and not so smooth. But again, stock kernel, stock clocks.
It really depends if it was optimized for mobile or not. Some Flash content (e.g. Starcraft streams from TeamLiquid) will run very choppy with a painful frame rate (on full screen Flash sometimes complains of "not optimized" ) while other videos (you know what I'm talking about ) will run smoothly because they were "optimized".

http://www.flashvideofactory.com/test/DEMO720_Heima_H264_500K.html
Nope, it even said not optimised for mobile.
- dSliceā„¢
While i think you're asking a lot out of your hardware by attempting to play a 720p video at such a high bitrate considering the overhead that flash imposes, it got significantly better once the entire video downloaded. Still a relative slideshow for me though. A single 1.0-1.3 ghz processor isn't gonna cut it for a video of that quality without some kind of gpu hardware acceleration somehow. That video will never be completely smooth on this phone.
And when i said flash videos play fine, i clearly meant those that are optimized for mobile. I have realistic expectations for this hardware.
