Anyone with the Sensation on AT&T? - HTC Sensation

Looking for a good ~4" Android phone not carried by AT&T. Considering the Sensation from Bell for unlocking and use on AT&T.
Anyone using this phone (Bell or Tmobile version) on At&T 3g? I won't have a 4g plan, but 3g is good enough. I have seen some comments elsewhere that it does not work or data connection is poor.
I actually don't use a lot of data even with a smartphone (average 400-500MB/mo) so I keep a less expensive dumbphone data plan.
If being used on AT&T what plan? Is AT&T making Sensation users upgrade to smartphone plan?

I have a Bell Sensation that I bought from Negri Electronics and I am using it on AT&T. I had to add the AT&T APN (found the info here on this forum) and it works fine. I am using it on the same line that I used to have an Inspire on so I am using the same data plan. I am not sure what they would do if you use it on a new line or try and not use a data plan.
I am having no troubles with data connection and I am using the stock radio altho the phone has S-Off and is rooted.
Overall I am very happy with my decision to buy it and use it on AT&T

Bell sensation being used on at&t "medianet" plan with no issues. As stated above, on stock Rom you will have to add the correct apn.

i have the same device using the Bulletproof 2.15 ROM and a grandfathered unlimited data plan and i have not had any problems. i was considering the Atrix 2, but decided on the Sensation because it's rooted and has good ROM support. i also prefer HTC's mail app vs the stock Android/Exchange email app.

I really like the sensation too but one thing that's stopping me are the numerous reports of dust collecting under the screen. Do you guys experience the same issue on the bell version?

No dust here.

Thanks all. I figured it would work on medianet plans, but is good to get confirmation.

Does the Tmobile version only get dust under the screen?

No dust here either, but shouldn't you be concerned more with the fact that you may only get Edge data speeds on ATT or Bell with a TMO phone?

the OP is considering the Bell version which supports at&t 3G bands.

Dust
I have a pretty bad dust issue, and HTC is willing to get it taken care of but it took about 2 weeks of fighting and me having to pay to ship it back to Canada from Colorado where I live. The issue with getting support is that i violated 2 major points in the warranty, 1. I purchased the phone from www.canadagsm.ca which is not a "Authorized HTC Dealer" and 2. I am attempting to get support out side of the country of original purchase. My phone functions great and i am very pleased to have it, but this dust issue is killing me and almost makes me want to avoid HTC in the future.

How is T-mobile in New York and in general

Hi guys,
Don't blast me guys if you think this is a useless thread.
I was looking to buy the sensation for my wife but we have never had a contract with t-mobile and as such do not have any experience with them personally. In philly friends who had t-mobile weren't always happy about their signal when traveling out of town or just the fact that most people we knew were on At&t. Does T-mobile have truly unlimited data?
Anyway for a change I was looking to you guys for a review of t-mobile rather than the phone itself.
Also just to be sure if I buy it out of contract I could use AT&T sim card right?
Thanks for any replies. Much appreciated. Enjoy your phone.

I'm in NYC and Tmo's coverage here is great. I dont travel much and when I do it's usually big cities so I've never had a problem with signal. I know when I go to some more rual areas I have some issues but that's not too often.
TMO does have unlimited data BUT you get throttled to dial up speeds if you go above 2gb/5gb/10gb(depending on the plan you have)
You will be able to use your ATT sim card if you buy an unlocked sensation or have yours unlocked. But ATT uses different 3G bands as TMO so I think you would be stuck on 2G speeds
Thanks for the reply. You see I am on sprint (EVO 4G) and I love Sprint's unlimited everything plan.I don't think they do the throttling thing.
So buying it unlocked and using AT&T is a no go if it's going to be stuck on 2G speeds.

No Problem Yeah I think Verizon and Sprint are the only ones with TRUE unlimited data.
You might want to hold off then. I do think I read somewhere that a Sensation with ATT bands went through the FCC, So they might be releasing the sensation soon on ATT

[Q] Can this phone work on AT&T?

Its very annoying that phone models are locked into specific carriers (hope this changes in the future) but im currently on AT&T, which in my area has the best overall signal coverage. Can this phone be put on the ATT network?
Is this phone a good one? My roommate just got the Incredible 2, and im liking the Thunderbolt, but thinking i need to jump on the Dual core market. I currently have a Touch pro 2, which is ok, but SLOW.
Also, what features does this phone have? HTC's own site seems selective on what they post on their specs (they tend to leave out common features on some phones)
Things I like on the thunderbolt spec sheet are..
Dual mics with noise cancellation, Compass sensor, G-Sensor, Proximity sensor (not sure what this is used for), Light sensor, 3.5mm audio jack, MicroUSB, FM radio. (i also like the kick stand)
The G-Sensor i think is pretty standard these days, tho not sure what they mean by the Compass sensor, id be great if it actually had a compass in it.
But this phone doesn't list ANY special features on HTC site.
Thanks in advance.

Bell is a Canadian phone company (pretty sure) and has the same bands as ATT so their phones are compatible. If you're gonna jump onto the dual-core wagon, check out the SGS2 phones (i'm pretty sure ATT has one coming to them soon if not already...) Then you wont need to unlock or worry about compatibility
The sensation 4g will work on att, but you won't get 3g data.
Of the specs you listed regarding the Thunderbolt, the sensation 4g has all those features, minus a kickstand.
Also, the proximity sensor is used to detect close or far objects. An example of it in use is when you put your ear up to the phone during a call, and the screen automatically turns off, then turns back on when you move away from it.

Don't try to get the tmobile version. You won't get anything above 2g.

The Bell (Canadian) model (Z710A) will work on AT&T 3G. The T-Mobile or European versions will work on AT&T, but they will only connect with EDGE data speeds, not 3G.
I'm not overly concerned about data really, unless i'm forced to pay for it. The Touch Pro 2 i have now i bought unlocked so i didn't have to pay for data.

I thought the light sensor did that? My TP2 does that, but doesn't mention a prox. sensor.
The Bell model gets 3G bands but is locked at the moment. It should be unlocked next week:

the t-Mo and Euro versions work but only allow 2G
You shouldn't have a required data plan if you pay cash for the phone.

Eww.. I paied that much for my TP2, i cant really afford that again... i might be stuck with a contract Which id bet i couldnt get this.. this sucks lol.
Hows the speaker on this phone? My TP2 has dual speaker and has pretty good quality (also has a handy mic mute on the back). It also uses the sensor and switch's it to speaker when i flip the phone over (lying on the screen) Can this phone, or others do that or is that a TP2 specific thing?
Well, nobody around here offers this phone.. Which sucks. Ive been watching reviews on both This and the SGS2. While the SGS2 looks like a nice phone, and seems to be pretty comparable, i like how the Sensation looks alitlte more. The button placement, and the more 'roundness of it is more to my taste than then square 'iphone-iks' looking SGS2. Hell id proly be willing to start using a data plan if i could get this phone on att. (tmobile isnt in my area, if they are their coverage isnt good.)

$550CAD straight from Bell Canada, which won't really help you much if you don't live in Canada or near the border. Once they're carrier unlocked and have custom ROMS I'll drive up and pick up a Bell model to use on AT&T, can't wait
ok.. i was wrong.. T-mobile is apparently in my area. I have no personal experiences with them however and none of my friends use them, so not sure how well they work in my area. Its food for thought tho.
Where are you located?
Chances are you aren't in a 3G coverage area which is good news because you can skip out on paying through the nose for a data plan... just opt for the 200MB no overage "unlimited" throttle point data plan and you're good to go. Voice coverage is probably still a concern but if it's just bad at your house T-Mobile has WiFi calling which uses your WiFi network to place and receive calls and texts

If there are wal-marts in your part of the country, I hear they have it for $148.88
lol, yea, otherside of town has one, but blah buying one from wal-mart. Somehow i dont trust them to set things up correctly. Transferring my number and whatnot. It will take a month or two for me to have the money in any event.
i kinda hate that every place has different deals. T-mobile itslef has a higher upfront cost, ($250) but a lower monthly charge (59.99) but Newegg has a lower upfront ($150) but a higher monthly (69.99). The monthly cost seems to differ in the data.. Tmoble charing 10, newegg 20.
Bah!
@ Lyian Keep an eye out on the tmobile website. Just last Wed/Thurs (for lilke 24 hours) they were selling the Sensation for free with new contracts/new lines of service.
Keep an eye out tmo does that all the time.
If anyone wants to know I have a Sensation from T-mobile in Puerto Rico and I noticed that it says in the box that it works on 1700, 1900 and 2100 frequencies for data which means it can work on AT&T.
I'll try to unblock it later and see if it really works.

The speaker isn't that good for most apps. But for certain apps (like Google Music) it's really loud. I don't know why. Most people have overcome this problem by using the Equalizer app or Volume+ though. And yes, it can do that.

Why do I have to pay more?

So I upgraded from my Nexus One to a Sensation 4g and TMO said they have to charge me $5 more a month cause of the 4g. I took my wife's mytouch 3g and my phone side by side and we get the exact same speeds and the area I'm in is supossed to be 4g. why do I have to pay more for the same thing?

Was your 4g on? Her mytouch 3g doesn't utilize the spectrum T-Mobile puts out the same way that your sensation would. And even if you're in a bad 4g area or non existent area they make you pay the 4g cost regardless. It happens on Sprint as well.

Bull!
Call loyalty and tell them to fix it! I pay $20 a month for preferred android, and I get 4G speeds. (At least when I am in Dallas, cause we don't do 4G in west texas) They are just trying to squeeze more $$ out of you.

More details? What did they put you on? I work for T-Mobile and unless you had the really old 25 dollar android data and they added the old(but newer then the old 25) 30 dollar 5 gig internet, we don't have any 5 dollar add on for 4G. What they should have done was upgraded your plan to the new stuff where you have a choice of the $10 200mb $20 2gig or $30 5gig. The older rate plans are only capable of having the $30 web added in store. If you call care though you can get the $20 preferred plan, stores can't add that.
What I would say is instead of complaining on here about pay $5 extra, call care and make sure you are on the best plan for you. Reps at store level tend to not even pitch the idea of changing rate plans to customers and just tack on whatever feature Watson tells us to. You're probably paying more then you should be due to your own and your reps negligence. It's funny because as a rep I make much more money by saving my customers money with putting them on new plans, I don't know why so few reps just tack on the stuff and send the customer on their way. Call care, I am SURE they can get you a better deal.
Ok. I will do that. Thanks

Let me know what they had you on and switch you too. You'd be surprised what they may have now. Its funny people think that their unlimited loyalty plans and what not are so good but the new plans are much better. Reps tend to just agree with the people when they think they have a good plan because convincing them otherwise tends to be to troublesome. Or you just get get a lazy rep, sadly nine times out of ten when it comes to upgrades the customer has to tell the rep what they want. Where as with new activation its all about the rep trying to sell the customer. T-Mobile changed the commission on upgrades to try and fix this issue, and its worked on me. I make much more money now but my coworkers complain, its funny lol.
Im on even more family plan w/ 3 lines. They said when I upgraded my phone that I was on the older data plan and that it was no longer offered and I was forced to upgrade it

T-Mobile $60 unlimited plan

Hi,
I have moved from the UK to the USA and am using a tmob sim in my UK sensation.
Was originally using the $2 per day plan with unlimited 2g data but decided the $60 30 day plan with 2gb of 4g data would be better so I switched.
However, although my account confirmed the switch, when I tried to access the internet, I couldn't and it said I needed to refill my daily amount. Tmob customer services were clueless so they credited me back my money and switched me back to the daily plan.
Would be interested to know if anyone else has experienced similar or it actually worked for them. I am wary of trying it again if it definitely doesn't work.
I am on AR HD 6.7.2 if it makes any difference.
Thanks!
Hi, uhh... T-Mobile is dumb. I would recommend going to a kiosk or a T-Mobile store. I've had many problems with them over the last 5 years, especially as newer phones with newer plans have been coming out. I find it better to go there physically and have them change it.
Oh yeah, welcome to the US!
That's why I did it online and didn't call them. It was only when I called them that I realised they were clueless!
Does the straight talk AT&T sim work ok with a UK sensation?

The quality of online support has a wide variate. Probably try again with another guy.
The AT&T also usin GSM network, so the sim should work.
On T-mobile network the 4G connection theoretically would not work, because it requires a device with 1700MHz support. The AT&T using the 1900Mhz. Usually the european smartphones can use the EDGE maximum. I have used a HTC HD2 for 1 month on EDGE. Not baaad, but far from the satisfaction.

What does that mean exactly, that the phone simply won't work at all (even for voice and EDGE)? Or that it will only work on voice and EDGE? Or it will work on 3G HSPA, but not 4G HSPA+?

My understanding is that ATT checks the IMEI of the phone accessing data and if it is a phone with 4G capability it blocks it completely. No EDGE, no 3G, nothing, no data access. You may be able to skirt by for a while until they track you down and cut you off, but it is only a matter of time until you are cut off. Voice should work.

The n4 is pentaband and gets all of tmobiles bands. The att one x might get 3g on T-Mobile depending on the refarming in your area. Chances are it won't be as strong or consistent as the n4
