Just a quick question guys.
1. the official ota updates from google only work with the stock rom right? does it matter if the phone is rooted or not? so if the phone is rooted, do the ota updates work?
2. if i want to get back from a rooted rom/cm7 rom/miui rum/... to a complete stock rom (with stock recovery, etc.) so total stock i just flash the official 2.3.6 version from google via recovery and everything is normal, right? so if i am back to the stock, the ota updates should work?
thanks guys
nobody?
Yes the OTA updates would work for a complete stock ROM even if you have rooted it, After the update you would have stock recovery and would lose root.
Wht if ur on stock rom but have matrix kernel will it work then?

I think you need to be fully stock, ROM + Kernel. I might be wrong though.

Is it not possible to code a custom ROM so as to then flash it the same way an official ROM is flashed?
Greetings, fellow Oklahoman.
What do you mean "the official way"? RUU? PD98IMG.zip?

Hi. Thanks for the reply. What I mean is how an official ROM is flashed when an upgrade is issued. A notice is given that there is an upgrade and you download and install the upgrade. Can a custom ROM not be installed this way? Rather than having to go through the process of rooting the phone and then flashing one of the available custom ROMs. I would think it would be possible to issue a rooted ROM as an upgrade flash.
Wow. U must be truly a noob. The only way u can flash a custom rom is that u have to be rooted and have s off achieved first. And once u achieve that, you are talking about an over the air update. Which that only can happen from an unrooted totally stock phone. The only thing that comes close to that is an update from rom manager, in which u have to be rooted first before rom manager will work properly, which will download and install a custom rom of your choosing.
In other words, you have to be rooted and s off in order for u to do anything outside of stock

Bro, very nicely stated.

I think the OP was asking if its in anyway possible to flash a custom rom via RUU not OTA. In the same way that ROMS for Samsung devices can be cooked to flash via ODIN as opposed to CWM...
Moved to Q&A
So the question is in the title. Will the update brick or indoor my phone? If I wanted to install a rooted version does anyone know of a working mirror?
Thanks in advance.

From all the threads in general, it would seem the update does unroot your phone. Also from those threads it would seem flashing a custom recovery and, subsequently, the su zip will give you root back. I don't know of a pre-rooted version out yet.
i just upgraded to ics a little while ago using rom manager, i had to go back to stock 2.3.3 which unrooted my phone but did not lock the phone . I was wondering the same thing and that is how the heck do i root my phone now lol. my phone still shows the unlocked lock on the boot up screen under "Google" but i dont have SU permissions anymore. if I still have su.zip file and cwm can i just use fastboot and flash the img and su.zip ?
What if I don't have my original files to roll back to stock GB? I just downloaded the version Koush put up on his twitter...will that allow me to flash in CWM and update?

Download stock images from from manager then update to 2.3.6 then you can flash the one from koush's twitter.
Root will be lost after update. Currently flashing su.zip wont work. Still trying to figure it out.

We might just have to re*root when they release the info.

Let me ask you also, I'm currently running Alpha13 w/ Francisco.Franco kernel. Is the official that much smoother that I should lose my root?

I am one of the few that have been able to upgrade to the Official GINGERBREAD.UCKL2, 2.3.6, Kernal 2.6.35.7-I997UCKL2-CL806505. But now i need a Root. Are there any options out there. I dont use it for roms i just like to be able to remove apps and other stuff that being rooted lets you do.
No, there isn't... you have to flash a rooted kernel, then you will lose video, or you could flash one of the custom uckl2 Tom's with everything working. The official update is crap anyway

Yes i also want to know about the same.
Does anyone from Brazil (or some near country) received the ICS OTA? I'm back to 2.3.6 - just to see how the update is going here - and not even a clue about the OTA. Tried check in, clearing data of Google Framework, etc... I know I can flash the OTA but would be nice to see some better update support here
Thanks!

Ha..ha....ha...... not funny
Did you flash a zip that contains stock kernel, stock rom and stock recovery? And of course did the superuser app appear in the app drawer after first boot?
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk 2
hehe im not a noob on it. i have installed the images from google ( https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#soju ) without superuser, so im on stock 2.3.6 with bootloader unlocked only and CWM touch (this shouldnt matter for OTA AFAIK).
EDIT: oops, forgot to delete the install-recovery.sh so im with stock bootloader as well

Hi! I'm from Uruguay.
First of all, lets make it clear that I'm a Big NOOB on android. My Nexus S is my first android phone.
I've a brand new Nexus S, updated with Android 2.3.6. I've tried to update over OTA, but the phone displays that the software is up to date, giving me no chance to update to ICS.
I didn't make any modification in the software of my phone.
Thanks.
I have a quick question. U want to update to ICS but I'm currently rooted on stock gb rom. Can I update even tho I'm rooted or do I need to odin back to regular stock? If I need to go back to stock can some show me where the tar file for stock for Odin?
Thanks.

Check to see if kies will do the update first, but if not then yeah do that.
Kies software statment : no root to upgrade
Personally I tried and didn't work
I be prefer to installed cwm recovery and take ICS ROM from development is running perfect. That what I have done.
