i'm sure some of you have seen my posts about all this, but basically i accidentally "damaged" my Thunderbolt and even though i've been with Verizon only 6 months, they've allowed me to get a new phone at discounted price.
i went ahead and ordered the Bionic and it'll be here friday. i did want the razr more(and still do sort of), just once i found out about the non-removable battery i was really put off.
now that i'm sitting here waiting i keep thinking about the razr for some reason. should i just stick with the bionic or return it and get the razr?
my thunderbolt does still work, there's just this water-like smudge on the bottom left corner of the screen. i'm fix it eventually(and keep it as a back up phone).. just keep going back & forth with these new ones.
argh !!!... if i'm thinking about the razr that much it means i should just get it huh?
Razr. You know you'll only want it latah.
Side question, did they let you keep unlimited data, if you have it?

I did ask them and they said yes to keeping unlimited data. Giggidy~!
Just my opinion - dude you are crazy if you get the Bionic. Radio shack (rumor I just read) isn't even going to sell the Bionic anymore. The Bionic is awesome if there was no Razr. But there is a Razr. The Bionic would have been awesome if it had got released when it was originally supposed to. But since it got delayed for what - like a year?
Personally I am waiting for the Galaxy Nexus (at least if we really do get it). No locked bootloaders for me.
Again - this is all just my opinion. And who am I? Just another nobody on the internet.

Yeah i keep hearing that about both the Bionic and the RAZR. All i know is im not going to wait around for the Galaxy Nexus and i have no interest in the iphone 4S(well, maybe some interest in Siri...)
Regardless, with the Thunderbolt my main concern was speed. No matter what ROM i used, i always used apps like AntTek App Manager, BAMF Settings, Titanium Backup, etc to freeze &remove stuff i didnt use & then SetCPU(with appropriate kernals) to overclock.
All the other things like design/interface, etc came 2nd. Im hoping with these dual core phones that even being stuck on stock(for now) everything should run nice and smooth without having to change anything.
Yes though, i do have the itch to experiment for the fun of it. Luckily i will still have the good ol' TBolt. Its my favorite phone next to the HD2(not stock of course).
I am waiting for Rezound (Vigor) or since my Bolt is still working great the first phone to come out with the new Qualcomm chip set next year is said to use 75% less power.
If I helped you in any way please use the thank you button
Definitely go for the Razr. It looks really, really nice. I'm more interested in the Nexus because of Ice Cream Sandwich but I'm stuck with the Thunderbolt.
another vote for passing on the Bionic. Sadly, it's already being left in the dust. Personally, I'd gladly go for the Razr. It's pretty sexy, but any of the new phones coming out soon would be great. The Bionic was supposed to be the king, but when it finally was released, it's almost like a stopgap phone until the Razr.
Off topic, but if/when they do get the razr rooted and all the goodies, what happens on a lockup? No removable battery, no battery pull. Let it sit out till the battery dies and probably burn the screen? Maybe I'm being too worrisome, but that doesn't sounds fun to me. It does look really nice though, looks and specs wise!
I have the Bionic and TB...
I would say Razr because its not using a Pentile display! That is my biggest complaint about this Bionic, even though there are other issues.

Good point. It's probably hard to say since it's not even out yet, but there will probably have to be some way to force reboot it. Nothing's impossible, but it doesn't sound like Moto/VZW will be going out of their way at all to make it mod-friendly.

Wow man, bring that thing back and wait for the Razr. The screen on the Bionic is absolutely awful. If you keep the Bionic, you will kick yourself once you see the Razr in comparison. The battery life is also expected to be much better with the Razr, who cares if you can't take it out...Oh, and the Razr is water resistant.
My TB has also suffered water damage. So my next phone will be either the Razr or Nexus, since my TB is still mostly working (speaker is shot, minor screen issues) I have the luxury of taking my time and comparing them side by side. I need a rooted phone, so that will factor in as well.

Good times! Just for fun I thought I'd call VZW and see if we could swap out the HTC for the Charge given all the ridiculous radio issues. I even went as far to say that the rebooting based on the new update was just the final straw. I'm at day 31 I think. As predicted they said now.
I had to play off like I had lost the phone and couldn't find it when they were asking for my software version! XDA saved the day! I logged on and said, "The 605.7 #?" haha.
I'm a little disappointed with the way this phone has been handled. This topic is probably a waste of time but I wouldn't mind seeing if others gave it a try...

What are these ridiculous radio issues you speak of? The VZ network issues would be trouble for the Charge as well.
I for one think the Thunderbolt is top notch build wise. 4g - LTE is still in it's infancy. The Charge looks to be another cheaper plastic Sammy product that I would never trade for IMHO.
The charge has a wonderful screen.. and a slightly superior battery life.. other than that... I don't think it stacks up to the TB in terms of build quality and aesthetics. I hate the chamfered corners on the bottom.. yuck!
I only have 4G coverage at my work. Regardless of radio I'm constantly cycling between 4G, 3G, Analog, and then no data. I've had to turn off 4G entirely to get any sort of reliable connection.

I have a thunderbolt and I love it. I don't understand the love for the build quality. The charge looks clean an hell and yes it uses a plastic back, but thunderbolt probably the worst build quality phone I have tried in a while. The phone feels like it was slapped together in a hurry. The whole phone squeaks all the time when I press to clean the screen, feels like the sides are going to break. The light leaking from the bottom seal, no I am not talking about looking at it from top. I dont have it but I have seen plenty of people including one of my friends have that problem.
Radio issues are all at verizon's end, you can blame big red for not getting their act together, I still dont get good 4g at my house even though I am in the dead center of coverage. I do however get great 4g everywhere else I am suppose to get 4g.
I think charge has very good build quality.
Thunderbolt a good phone but not so great build quality. Stand peeling off, Light leaking through the bottom edge, screen is not flushed against the sides, I had water get in on top while trying to install zag screen protector but it only got behind the verizon logo and didn't get on the screen.
I look at the evo, the screen looks like it blends in with the body of the phone alot better than it does with the thunderbolt. Few of my friends have it, the glass quality used on the evo looks much superior than the thunderbolt.
My Thunderbolt has none of those issues. Coming from the Atrix its a tank in the best possible way.

I wouldnt switch for the Charge. The thunderbolt to me is damn near perfect. Plus I would never get a Samsung phone due to their lack of actually caring about a phone for more than a week.

You are about 17 days passed the return policy, you definitely weren't gonna get a free swap to a more expensive phone no matter how much u complained. The most they would have done is replaced ur current one under warranty. Lol

Man all this talk about the tb's build quality is really hard to understand for me. I love the quality and if it werent for wanting to keep my phones in good condition. I would rock it without a case to show it off. Shes a beauty.
I paid full retail for mine the day it launched and since then i have been able to sleep at night. Even with that ugly charge from a non supportive manufacturer being announced. And it does look uglier with extended battery. I didn't think it could look uglier. Coming from 4 years of RIM brainwash im more than happy with my ThunderBolt.

Oh my god that's awful.
I've heard of a butterface before, but the Charge is an "everything butterface" of the phone world. Egads, it looks like one of those concept cars you look at and hope they never actually make.
I do hope Samsung starts making phones with excellent build quality because it will benefit us all if we have more alternatives, but until they do I don't think I'll own another one.

Id happily take a charge over my TB if the Charge actually worked as advertised.

I have heard this may be a real issue... ATT online chat tech support told me..."The phone will stay much cleaner if you keep it out of your b-hole"
So I am just gonna do that.
I was told that if you suddenly let go of the phone, it may fall out of your hand. If this is true I may just have to return the phone!!!
I think I'm going to take a break from XDA for a bit once I get my phone, just to avoid the initial S**T storm
I'm with you vioalas. All that the forums are going to do at that point is make us take our device under a microscope and inspect every little bit of it and have our own psychosomatic issues.

So tomorrow is finally the day I get to upgrade my phone, my fascinate has treated me well these past two years, but its a bit dated now. So I've been following the forums and threads on the S III but I didn't see much people saying anything about specific hardware issues with the phone. When I go tomorrow to purchase my phone, is there any hardware specific stuff to look at to make sure my phone doesn't suffer from quality issues or run tests apps like display tester to test out the phone so I don't come out with a lemon and have to come back to exchange it? Any suggestions on making sure I don't get an lemon is much appreciated.
I wouldn't worry about it. Mine has been rock solid, even after a trip into the pool.
Enjoy your new phone. I'm sure you'll love it.

As someone who had a launch fascinate, and upgraded to an s3 in July, let me add my opinion.
Gps. Though still not bulletproof and instantly locking like my wife's iphone 4s, it is way better than the stock fassy and even cm builds
Rom. Stock Rom is way less bloated and tw is way better with a smaller footprint.
Quality. About the same. I miss the 4 capacitive buttons actually. Still find myself hitting the android options key when trying to get to the launcher
I still have my fascinate in case this breaks and needs to be swapped. I do not miss it at all though. I could never find a perfect Rom for it. Something was always broke or buggy. I love my s3. Was going to sell it to get an iphone 5, but I am going to keep it now.

Glad to have someone who has experience with the fascinate and gs3. I was concerned with the gps since the gps on the fascinate was pretty wonky. I guess the gs3 isn't much different in build quality with the thin plastic battery cover.
I previously owned a Fascinate as well, it was a great phone but outdated.
I was first worrying about the size being (alittle) too big, after few days it seems to be perfect size.
I do not like the physical home button and the external speakers location. The battery cover is a thin flexible plastic cover, atleast it will not shatter if dropped on hard surfaces.
And the most important of all, it is not an iphone. Unless you have a lemon or defected phone, you will love it.

Yeah, I was worried about the size until I tried out a floor model and to me, felt fine, different from the 4 inches of course but nothing like the galaxy note. I think one major difference is what you mentioned, the physical home button, coming from 4 capacitive buttons to just 3 buttons with one of them a physical one, is pretty different.
A lot of us come from the fascinate. Me too. I find this phone has built nicely on the original fascinate. Adding things that needed along with the general hardware upgrade. Or now thinking on it, Samsung or Qualcomm should have given us a quad core but such as life.

Yeah such is life, but having the dual core hold up to that quad core is nice.
On another note, didn't get my galaxy s3 today. So I have unlimited data on my plan and went though hell to try to find a way to keep the unlimited data and get the phone at the discount price. I might of done it, but won't know until verizon sends me my phone in the mail. Will know in a couple days.
It's a great choice ! You will be glad you took the upgrade ! I even enjoy the phone out of the box . This phone is going to be limitless .

Let me be one of the first to say Welcome to the VZW GS3 Family! I may be on GS3 #3, but I think I finally got a keeper. The phone kicks my bionic's a** left and right, and I feel the GS3 is the best phone on the market atm.
As for me being on GS3 #3, I wouldent worry about build quality. First one had the screen gap issue (was back when the GS3 had 1 forum for all carriers), second one had dead pixels, but this current one is a keeper!
I am also new to the verizon fam. Came from sprint and am so happy with this gs3. So much to do that sometimes dont know what to do on the phone. What cool tricks do u suggest. I habeny been on this site in years.
To update everyone, I got my phone today and was able to activate it and keep unlimited! The sweet sweet smell of a new phone with unlimited 4G.

Did you specifically request to keep your unlimited? I am just curious because I preordered mine and was able to keep it. I am not sure if they are still allowing anyone who has unlimited to transition to the S3 with unlimited or only people who specifically request it... anyone have more information??
The phone is fantastic. I've had no issues with it. Welcome to the family!
I love my GS3. It's a great phone and build quality is pretty good. But I did have a few things though most of them are minor. Do check them out within your return window:
1. My 1st GS3 had GPS issue. Took forever to lock and wouldn't stay locked. Got an exchange for that and the 2nd one is way better, still not perfect but totally usable.
2. My 1st GS3 came with a tiny scratch on the screen. I found it after using the phone for < 2hours. At first I thought I scratched it. Then after keeping the phone in the same pocket (completely naked) for 3 weeks, and then having the 2nd one for a month, no scratch whatsoever. Now I'm pretty sure my 1st one came with the scratch. It's a very tiny scratch can only be seen from certain angle. But it annoyed the hell out of me.
3. Both the 1st and 2nd GS3's back cover have a squeaky spot. The 1st one right behind the volume rocker, the 2nd one behind the home button. Not the worst problem but can get annoying.
I saw other people report screen problem (dead pixel) so running a screen test is probably not a bad idea.

I was checking for everything, can you tell me more about the back cover squeaky spot, been squeezing it, haven't had any squeaky spots, I assume that means I don't have that problem.

As far as I know if you take a discounted price on a phone, you have to take a share everything plan. Op how did you keep your unlimited?

I did a cross upgrade, I was able to transfer my upgrade to a different phone and then have that line upgrade to the s3. When it came, I just esn swap (transferred the phone to my line). Note this only works with ordering from the website. At the store and anywhere else they will force you to switch. Trust me, I banged heads with a lot of people over this.

When I got mine at full price they made me switch before they would activate it but I'm fine with it.

Ahhh that makes sense then. I was pretty sure they weren't allowing people to do that anymore no matter what but the way you went about it seems to be a few and far between sort of thing. Nice work on keeping that unlimited data though. props

Glad to have someone who has experience with the fascinate and gs3. I was concerned with the gps since the gps on the fascinate was pretty wonky. I guess the gs3 isn't much different in build quality with the thin plastic battery cover.

It feels solid to me. Its a thin cover but its all packed together in that slim body pretty tightly so it doesn't feel cheap (at least not to me). You can't tell its a thin plastic back unless you remove it as it doesn't move or give at all when it is on the phone. I think the fascinate felt worse
The GPS is no problem at all on the S3 but I never had issues with it on my fascinate either although I know a lot of people did.
As someone who didn't think the galaxy s3 was going to feel like that major of an upgrade over the Hercules, I gotta say, I tried it out. And then having been fairly convinced by the display, I traded my Hercules + cash for the pebble blue one off Craigslist.
Gotta say, wow. AOKP JB runs literally with no bugs for me (some ppl have call echo but I'm lucky enough to not), AND and just wow. I never knew how much of an upgrade this device was. If anyone out there is skeptical about upgrading, don't be. You won't regret the switch.

If its running AOKP, then it cant do anything the SII cant do. Its just a bit quicker. I'll avoid the impulse buy and see what comes this fall.

I've been tempted to lately just since it's been so long since I've had a new gadget. But honestly, not sure if I want to go with another device that's held at the mercy of carriers/manufacturers for updates. I want the next Nexus to come out soon...
I assure you its not worth it. If you have money to burn, go ahead. I've had and returned it for a gs2
hey its one of those posts that gives the op justification and gratification for buying a product!
I can totally say that the s2 has AOKP JB with literally no bugs, some ppl have RR and SOD but I'm fortunate enough to not have those bugs!
I'm just messing with you OP. enjoy your S3, i will join you when i break my s2.

Well I wasn't shallow enough to upgrade just because of aokp, I think that'd be just a liiiiittle bit weird. Just sayin.
The display and smooth interface was what got me, it's significantly better than the s2, totally never expected it to be be. And more than an impulse buy, it's a phone that I think will last a long time. Mostly posting this for those who were questioning upgrading.
Cool story bro. I hope you like it better than my best friend likes his.
My friend has one and like blackangst said. My friend hates his and is wanting to get another S2.
I'll get one once the price comes waaaaay down on Craigslist for them. The screen and camera are about the only legitimate upgrades from our device

A few of my friends have it. Its much faster, (side by side app loading and gaming) the screen is much better, the camera sensors wreck the ones on this phone, the battery life is MUCH better.. what exactly isn't worth it to you? Youve had this agenda against the s3 for awhile now and im starting to doubt if youve had the handset at all. The phone is an overall upgrade. Were you expecting it to make you breakfast??? I dont get some of you noobs. This phone is great but the over infatuation some of these people have with the t989 is overwhelming. Personally im waiting to jump back into the nexus line.
Actually my buddy also went from the t989 to the s3. The only thing he doesnt like about it is that wifi reception is a bit sketchy compared to the t989 but hes loving everything else about it. Hes a current tmobile employee and says the s3 is the best handset tmos got in its line up. Id say its a worthy upgrade for the 720p samoled screen alone.

Why get a S3 now when the note 2 is right around the corner and the new nexus probably coming right afterwards?

Yeah the International note 2 is around the corner, god knows if tmobile will even get it, as for the nexus, it's a cool phone but as long as it doesn't have ex sd I will never get one. I myself really want to upgrade to the S3, but I'm a little hesitant as I have seen some of my friends' S3 already scratched from the screen. One of my friends had an s2 and now the s3 and he cracked the screen after only one drop. He said the drop wasn't even that bad. And I'm a person who doesn't like any cracks or scratches on the phone screen. And I fumble my phone a lot lol

Interesting maybe i should check on the durability.
I'm the same way, keep my phone nice and pristine, but i rarely drop my phone. I actually only dropped it 3 times. 2 with case phew, and once without... Which was the worst thing possible... i put it in my shirt pocket got out of the car.... Bent over to check my tires a routine i do weekly.... Bam onto my bricked type driveway... on the corner too... I stare at my flawed Bezel every day from then on... I never leave anything in my shirt pocket from that day forward. What made it worse was that right before i got out of the car i just removed my full film protection for that corner because it was getting uhhh linty/dirty. Felt like bad luck Brian lol

Can I ask why ppl went back? I know the person I got mine from just didn't like the center button, which I actually like. Worked out to be a good deal for both parties.
Also, regarding screen scratches, why the hell don't ppl just buy some $5-10 screen protectors on Amazon for their $600 device?? This seems like an obvious fix to me..
Also, the original international note didn't work on tmobile 3g/4g, nor am I likely to find the deal I got for this for one of those behemoths. Expandable memory is what won me over a nexus device also, I already have the tablet so this fits what I want a bit more.
protectors will resist some scratches, but what we were worry about is the screen cracking............... I've dropped my phone waist high on concrete and uneven ground yet minimal damages. If his friend barely dropped it and it shattered his screen... It sounds very weak.., like iPhone weak.. I've seen my friends and people drop their iPhone from sitting Down and you can hear the glass shatter.. If it's like that... I rather not buy it.
If you haven't noticed there are very few cases of broken screens in this phone section. Hence i would like to see how the s3 holds up.

Yes exactly what I am worried about. Because I myself have dropped this phone and its landed in every position imaginable, yet there is not a single scratch on the screen. As for iphones, yeah I don't think I have seen one yet without some kind of screen damage lol

I for one will wait to see who's going to carry the note 2, tmobile already dropping the first note after a few weeks is a good sign noting that they got on board with samsung with the note and maybe wanted to test the waters or might have been part of the contract of them signing on for the note 2. Either way I'm heading the note or new galaxy way with tmobile or not. Which would be straight talk because att can kiss my a$$.. But yea the nexus really needs that external slot and hopefully not have the headphone jack on the bottom of the phone.. smh
I made the mistake of upgrading to the sensation when it first came out, then the s2 then the gnex, then the one x came out so i learned my lesson n wait for the fall, after all software its what makes any outdated phone like new, and the s2 runs jelly bean like a champ and even with the little random bugs its a daily driver, we are less than 3 months for the new nexus device to come out, the new phones out there are still dual cores, better ones yeah, but still our phones are capable of the same features, and not all apps are compatible with ics and not to mention jb, so at this time of the year, why rush to buy a device that will be outdated in 3 months?

Duuuude, I almost did the same thing with the sensation. My EX girl was able to get an extra line and we were planning on getting me a phone and I was getting the sensation. For some reason we never did and we ended breaking up a little later. So when I went to TMobile to get a line on my own I got the s2. Thank god for that. Imagine, I'd be stuck with a sensation and under my ex's name. Phew

Has held up fine for me, I always keep my phone in a case after I ruined my vibrants screen a year back. Might say I'm paranoid of all screens breaking after that lol
Naturally, just as we start getting some real dev work on this phone, my wifes SK$G got swimming lessons. Now just in case any one is wondering, SK4G's do not swim well. In fact the poor guy drown!
So here's to hoping you guys get great development! Maybe I will see you deving for her new Galaxy S Relay 4G!
Sorry to hear it!

Good luck. Hey, maybe it's for the best? All good things must come to an end, or all bad things. However you view the SK4G. I'm just glad I'm in a predicament where I'm able use a newer phone, but still be able to work with the SK4G, had it still been my primary driver, we wouldn't have an excellent developer working on it.
That sucks. Did you try taking the battery out and letting it sit in a bowl of rice? The battery may be toast but there is some hope for the phone. You might try a new battery before you call it dead.

You gotta do a lot more than just let it sit in rice for awhile. You need to take the entire phone apart and flush it with clean water, then place the pieces somewhere warm to dry for a few hours. Ideally you use compressed air to blow the water off first.
Even then, a full immersion probably means you'd need a new screen. Screens are made up of a bunch of layers of delicate diffusers that are easily damaged simply by touching them. I wouldn't try to repair a water damaged LCD.
Still you could probably revive the mainboard, permitting it to be used to fix a hard bricked phone, or allowing you to get any important data off of it.
She made the mistake of trying to turn it on before it had time to dry properly.
Fortunately we had a full upgrade! She so far likes the relay. Only things she misses is the keyboard and the screen angle.

Screen angle was the main reason why I got this phone. Used HTC Touch Pro 2 before that, and it's angle was even better. Why there are so few phones with tiltable screen?..
