[Q] Performance tweaks? - Galaxy 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I realize galaxy 3 isn't exactly the top phone for performance but god damn the lag just melts my face off.
Phone starts ringing, screen lights up but remains black for up to 10 seconds before I can answer, menus lag like a mofo and overall it's a pain to use. Is there anything I can do?
I'm on non-oc Kyrillos' rom v7 atm.

why not try other rom or an updated version of Kyrillos?
.. Kyrillos 8.1 is out.. try that
you are on 7 na so.. try other custom ROM's for better performance..
this might solve your problem

Anything in particular you'd recommend emphasis on the performance?

CyanogenMod 6.2 is blazing but now i prefer CyanogenMod 7. Both are in alpha stage though and have a lot to fix.

If you want a stable fast rom that is fully working, I recommend either Kyrillos v8 or Dutchmod v4.1
For a super fast rom i prefer indroid 5.2 (version 6 seems to be a bit slowwer and some FC once an a while so )

i used to use kyrrilos rom but once i tried kyorarom, i found it to be much better(both fast and stable)

Most of the ROMs mentioned above are very good.
Cynogen 7 and 6.2 are still in WIP phase, so I would suggest you not to use it if you want to use it for daily purpose at this point in time, once completed, they would be the best thing around without a doubt.
At this point in time you may try DutchMod 4.1 or Kyrillos 8.1 or Indroid's latest with the G3Mod or fugu Kernel. Partition your card properly, convert partition properly, use SetCPU and set profiles properly. This should ensure you get good performance out of your phone.

Thanks for the replies altho I already flashed Kyorarom yesterday and so far it's been smoother than ever.

Upgrading to Darkys v8.1

Hey i guys I have a serious question hoping yall can help.
I am currently run Darkys v8 with the Voodoo 5 lag fix enabled.
Recently if your a Darkys fan as my self and I love v8 but when v8.1 becomes stable for the Captivate it will contain the new Speedmod Kernel.
I read both on Darkys forum that it is unnescessary to disable the voodoo lag fix when flash over the new 8.1.
As well as on the Speedmod FAQ they state that Speedmod and Voodoo are using the same filing system therefore you dont need to disable the lag fix.
Im just asking you guys if you could give me your experiences and if its really neccessary to disable lag fix then flash the new version of Darkys. (i.e. Voodoo Lag Fix 5.0 --->Speedmod Kernel)
Final note if something were to go wrong lets say with 8.1 because I did not disable the lag fix. This isnt anything a nandroid backup couldnt restore?
Thanks for any help in advance
I flashed speed mod last night without disabling lagfix on my previous kernel. Had zero problems and everything is working smoothly

Well regardless of the update to v8.1 thats coming soon for the Captivate I wanted Speedmod for the performance but I am super conservative when it comes to this stuff.
I disabled the lag fix.
Backed up my current Kernel
Then flashed to Speedmod which I have to say I love battery is amazing so is performance.
I also did this because when the v8.1 inevitably does come out and is stable I dont need to worry at all about changing kernels and or lag fixes as I will just be upgrading from the same Kernel.
Thanks anyways
i say flash to stock. flashing to stock only adds about 5-10 minutes.. having a bricked phone is not waiting an extra 10 minutes.

Well said. I never bricked since i started. I used to flash 1 rom over another and never went to stock. For the most part it worked good but every time I would have some issues it would be something unusual. I won't even talk about my bricking stories. Converting to stock gives you a spotless install and if the rom has a problem at least you know its the current rom and not leftovers.
I now always go back and flash clean.

[Q] What ROM should I choose?

Hi, I know there's no such thing as the "best" ROM, it depends entirely on taste and on what you're expecting. So, I'm searching for a 2.3.4, stable, as fast as possible ROM with no particular tweaks if not for increasing speed and memory...should I simply go with a deodexed stock or is there something better speedwise? Thank you in advance!

I would also like to get this tip...Speed increase and more available memory, maybe some tweaks in the notification bar, but besides that I would like to keep my phone pretty much in stock form.
If speed tweaks are all you want with very high stability, check out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1065392
His ROM (When he reposts it) is very stable and very fast.
Install that with James Bond or Netarchy kernel and you'll have a very fast/stable setup.
Ok, great, thanks!

Thanks for the tip! That ROM seems to be exactly what I want.
Can I add shortcuts or power controls to the pull down notification bar with a separate app, or should they be cooked to the ROM? If I can could somebody point me to the right directionwhere I could find this kind of separate app? Thanks!
If you want something a little more customized, but still pretty stock, you could try the infin1ty ROM. I've been using it for a while now, it is very quick and very stable. The dev is also very involved and posts regular updates about new features and bug reports.

I would suggest you to use SupeASOP v8.0.
I find that rom is the best after i tried different roms.
Cm7 is good but not to my expectation.
I would recommend you to try SupeASOP v8.0 with kernel of Netarchy Nexus - 1.3.0.12-cfs-2.3.4-universal (Universal for non-stock 2.3.4 roms).

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060192
Rooted it by flashing su (before rebooting):

And, after first reboot I flashed Netarchy kernel (CFS 2.3.4 stock):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=936219
BLAZING fast...much faster (at least in my everyday use) than anything else I've tried...battery life also seems really good...thank you guys!
Why do you prefer this rom?

Ok, this rom is working great, but I get a force close when I try to make a video chat on talk...audio chat is fine...I saw many users had this problem on nexus s but I haven't understood if it's a rom related problem or a general problem with 2.3.4 on this phone...any suggestions?

I don't know much about your ROM, but there was/is an issue where you have to have your volume all the way down before you start a video chat on talk. Some ROMs have it fixed, some don't. Also, some ROMs have an issue where only the back camera works with video chat.
I know most devs are working on incorporating the fix for talk into their ROMs. If it is a deal breaker for you, take a look around at different ROMs, we are very fortunate to have many active and talented devs working on various ROMs.

[Q] I can't find a good ROM/Kernel

Hello everyone! This is my first post but I am a long timeme user of the forums.
So normally I am pretty good with this stuff as I understand a lot about this but I simply can't find a good rom and kernel that is also ICS. Currently I have BrainMasters MIUI 2.3.7 ROM, with the MIUI Trinity kernel.
I tried a few ICS ROMs and I love ICS but all the roms have some sort of problem. Ultimate ICS 2 had constant lock ups on me and my phone doesn't take kindly to over clocking. At all. Cyanogen Mod alpha 18 works okay but it gets very slow once all my apps are on it and it barely multitasks. Apps seem to close whenever left making multi tasking useless. Another one I tried was one that was super charged but the problem here was all super charged ones have done is close the app if left for a few seconds again making multitasking void.
Currently this ROM works no problem but I want to very badly move to ICS goodness. Also if some one can help my phone over clock better that would be nice. Am I doing anything wrong?
Thanks, cheers.
Okay. Here are a few roma you have to try.
1) peter alfonso's ICS rom (download at download.peteralfonso.com then in the crespo section)
2) AndroidME rom v1.1 is in development section here on xda.
3) CM9 kangs. (Download from
http://fitsnugly.euroskank.com/skankwich/crespo/ and use the latest g-apps from cm9 alfa18)
That are the roms i like the most. The peteralfonso rom is bugless.
But now im on androidME v1.1 with eugene's speedy-2 kernel. Speed, battery life and stability. Just what I need
Hope this helps..

Peter Alfonso's ROM (check general section) is good. Used it for two weeks without any hitch until i decided to explore other options. Currently on AOSP+ Neapolitan ICS 2.0.3 with no major complaints.
If you want other kernels, matrix and Glados have treated me well so far. I always OC to 200/1200 and have enough battery life for every day.
Even the stock ROM seems to have problems (for me the main issue is that battery is definitely worse than on GingerBread), maybe we should wait for a while to let things settle down.

real stable and fast ROM, maybe with eugene's kernel or GladOs 2.6
Pixel's stock rom with the Simply kernel were rock solid for me. I'm now trying Eugene's kernel with Pixels rom, and that also appears to be working very well!

That's what I first thought, I kept telling myself, okay so I am gonna wait til these are out of Beta and maybe wait for Cyanogen 9, but then I realized wait a sec this is STOCK Android?
I hope people work out the kinks in ICS for Nexus S soon cause it looks like a master piece

[Q] So many roms...

Hi guys,
I decided I want to flash an ICS rom to my nexus S.
Question I have though, is what will work for my phone, which is a 9020A (AT&T) and what rom would give me the closest to stock ICS like what OTA ICS would be?
I was thinking cyanogenmod 9 but I have used CM7 and remembered it being sort of a hassle...
I really want the facial unlock feature if possible. I don't know if it's native in ics or what but I want that.
Tell me why you think the rom you suggest is best, please. I want to know what the pros and cons to it are. And links would be really nice!
Thanks!
stock ics
I'm happy with the stock 4.0.3, I tested Peter Alfonso nightlies lately but I was annoyed by his adjusted auto brightness however it seems to be very popular and smooth and fast.
Stock runs great on my i9023 and there are no killer features in any stock like rom yet imho. But I'm using a custom kernel which is imho always better than the stock kernel.
edit: face unlock is useless since it recognizes nothing and is less secure than a pin or a pattern
Im using the same model phone as you are and running cybergr ics v3. Its by far the best rom so far.. try it, he has alot of extra features.. daily rom. In a couple of days v4 is coming out.
I just flashed revolution HD 4.2.3 this morning with speedy 4 kernel and this is definitely the best combination I've used so far.
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
I still use the DrewGaren ROMS, they are plenty fast and stable, along with the latest Glados Kernel They seem to give me the best results.
Stand corrected. cybergr ics v3 is a really fast ROM, probably the fastest i've ever seen my phone, just need to update it to v2.8 Glados
Face Unlock is a cool feature. Unfortunately, our front camera is too bad to properly recognize faces. If you get lucky - in good light - you might be able to unlock it, but it really is no fun at all.

Works great. No radio flash needed. Install went smooth aside from a few derps on my part. Rom seems a bit laggy but I think it's just because it's reinstalling everything. other times it's blown me away by how fast it is. Face unlock works pretty well. love the interface. I can't believe it's android, its awesome!
I've tested almost every ICS rom's available and right now KANGY6 with MATRIX v14.5 CFS it's the best combo for me.
i'm getting 3000+ on Quadrant with 1.46Ghz OC
You may try the CYBERGR ROM it's also very stable and fast.

ok, I dun goofed. I think I restored a system app on accident thinking that it would restore my messages or something... but my mobile data quit working when i restored that stuff (multiple restores, but thought i was just restoring user apps not system). any idea how to fix the mobile data without re-flashing?
Edit: Fixed, but lost my conversations in my messaging. Oh well. At least the android gods love me again. Anyways this rom is great, it works perfectly! So smooth!

As he mentioned he needs video recording, so any CM based ROMs are out of question.
u can use poseidon rom since it more stable than CM all issues encountered by the users and testers has been solved like wifi, gps, battery performance..etc
plz hit the thanks button if i helped you
yep, i agree buddy.
of all roms ive tried (not including cm's) poseidon's rom over xxkpq was smoothest and best, with bugs solved.. along with this installation was kernel: uc v9 1009 + custom theme (you may choose up to your own choice) + some mods/scripts. the above enumerated was the best ive used for so long before moving to miui v4 2.7.6 which is way too smooth (however, unapplicable to u since video recording deems to work in low res).
cheers.
I loved titanium rom the most!! finest rom ^_^ .. even supports Hindi and other languages .. and i found it to be best when it comes battery ..

Would you say miui and poseidon are better than remics?? I'm thinking of flashing miui. I'm looking mostly for smoothnes in scroll and opening apps.
For you I think the best options are titanium or stock. I love stock roms! But they are not smooth enough for me, if that's not a problem for you, you should use the stock rom because of the lack of bugs.

i think ill go for titanium again, just will ask anyone if that rom works with bam kernel, smooth fast best battery life. I love stock rom to but to much lags and not so smooth, titanium has just one little bug; when someone calls you u cant see who is calling for about 1 second thats enough for grabbing the phone from your pocket lol, u all got thanks for answers, thanks.
if u want to be in stock ROM better to try the new value pack which is DDLF2 it has been reviewed by others and they can say that it is battery efficient, smooth and stable...and if u found lags u can use bam kernel v.14 beta that fixes bugs.. dont forget the thanks button..hehe
u can read some reviews about the said fw here:

im not saying that poseidon is better than remics buddy. i am saying that poseidon could be of good choice too. pls read op buddy, he asks for a bug free rom (specially with video recording) so i did not mention about remics, etc so as not to mislead him.
cheers,
edit:
sorry buddy, misunderstood ur post hehe..
poseidon paired with uc kernel v9 1009 was the longest streak i used (in terms of gingerbread base). apps smooth and snappy during opening. titanium had good reviews too buddy.
if u were referring of miui gingerbread, its not so stable and battery life is short. ryt now however, i am on miui v4 (ics based), which is far the snappiest ive tried in terms of scrolling and opening apps. battery life also is satisfactory with around 15-17 hrs moderate use per experience. miui v4's external card been changed to emmc =)
