There is a thread here about volume being louder in the right speaker than in the left, so your problem might be related. I don't have either issue with my TF, though.
No for me both speakers are equaly loud but the right one is realy distorted, it sound like a blown up car speaker.

Sound issue

I can no longer hear any audio except through the ear piece when making calls. Have tried turn on/off and taking battery out. Any ideas?

so the phone speaker doesn't work either? how about headphones? We need a bit more detail to determine if it is a hardware or software issue.
I have found that the phone speaker works only during a call. But I have tried headphones and those don't work either. I can also sometimes hear my ringtone when I get a text. Also a freak thing happened, I had a song playing to see if the audio was working again for whatever reason and I got a text...instead of the ringtone playing it played the song for the duration of the ringtone.

Sound coming out of ear piece and not speaker

I just got the S3 and am having a hard time getting my audio to route to the speaker.
I have my email to notify me each time an email comes in. The first notification came out of the speaker. About 30 seconds later I got another email but that notification sound came out of the ear piece. Why?
Then I went to YouTube and Slacker and the audio was coming out the ear piece. If I got a phone call, the ring tone would be begin coming out of the ear piece but in like one second would start coming out of the speaker. After the call was done, sounds were back to coming out of the ear piece. The only way I have found to fix it is restarting the phone.
Can anyone help me? What am I doing wrong?

will a loud ringtone destroy the speakers?

I am on a my way to make my custom ringtone, and thinking to bump up the volume using audacity.
However, I am slightly worried that having too loud a ringtone will spoil the nexus 5 speakers, will it?
I start to get afraid after spoiling my old lenovo laptop's speakers by just playing songs at maximum volume. Now the lenovo just gives out distorted noise whenever I play anything.
I don't think it will destroy it, but surely it will sound distorted. The speakers takes it ability to output sound by its sound amplifier chip.
