hey xda i need a little help, you guys always have been great so here it goes...
im an evo user rooted and everything. i just got my wife and upgrade to a samsung epic, so what i was wondering was which is the best way to root and most importantly how do i know shes on/has EB13?...i dont even know what that is....i see links that refer to that but dont know whether to follow those instrusctions or look for others that just match what i have.heres her info if it helps...thank you guys!

again thanks and if this is dumb sorry
Here's a link for how the recovery which you will need once you root the phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076967&highlight=root . At the beginning of the paragraph, there's a link for "One Click Root".. just follow the instructions, it's pretty simple.
As for EB13, no she does not have it.. her phone is running on EC05 as shown in "Build- FROYO.EC05" which is just a version of Froyo (android 2.2) as is EB13..
Were you going to install a ROM on the phone once it's rooted or..? and if so, do you need to know how to flash the ROMs?
**and for future reference, you might want to try to search the forum.. there are wikis that would have told you what EB13 and EC05 are, and the link for rooting the phone was actually the first result when you search "root" haha.
Just figured I would warn you because some people on here get pretty pissed off when someone posts a new thread about something that they just yelled at 10,000 other people for

Well I would just try using ODIN to install a EH17(or any bulid you want) that has CWM/ACS Recovery build in.
Here is a link to a Deodexed/rooted/Busybox/CWM one to use that comes with ODIN and how to use it.

And if I had to suggest a ROM, it would be Urban MetaMorphisis. Thats what I've been using for a while now with next to no problems. Link Below.

again thanks sorry for dumb questions
ok, for starters, ec05 is the sprint distributed rom version, as would be eb13, or eh17 or any other 2letter2number codes on the epic forums. i'd stay on ec05, it seems to be the most stable rom/modem combination. you can flash most any rom (including the eh17 leak) from the ec05 rom, and you'll suffer less reboots or problems (unless otherwise stated by the rom developer) as long as you wipe properly. as you seem to be familiar with rooting, remember to make nandroids at any important step. as far as roms, i like the simply aosp and the cm7, but they have no touchwiz or sprint bloatware. if you like that, try srf.
finally, please be respectful of the forum rules and post in the proper place. this should be in q&a
edit: the 'E' stands for the year, 2011, and the 'C' stands for the month, march. this rom was released in march of this year. EC05 was the last official release, and was froyo. anything after EC (ED, EG, EH) are all gingerbread leaks that are less reliable.

EH17 is the lastest Android 2.3 "Gingerbread" leak for the Epic, besides the Froyo ROMs its the most stable.
Yes this will auto root and install recovery. To boot into recovery hold down Power, Camera, volume down.
After you flash the first link I posted, boot up shut down and go back into recovery and flash the second link. after that you should be good to go.
ANd it's cool man but like they said, post in Q and A, no one minds helping though.
**Personally I prefer the Gingerbread leaks over Froyo due to the speed.**

no, the newest stable official build is ec05, the newest leak is eh17. i wouldn't use anything but either of those. eb13 was released in february and was a froyo build replaced by ec05.

Question about the official upgrade
Forgive the noob question, but does anyone know if the official release will unroot your phone using the techniques and software provided by USC? I'm technically savvy but this is still somewhat new to me. I've used Odin to root my phone and upgrade to the unofficial leak. I've had a number of software crashes since. I also found out, since I didn't do proper research before jumping onto the bandwagon, after the fact, that rooting will void the warranty. I'd like to unroot it, but I just need to know if this will do it or if I need to unroot it before I upgrade. Thanks!
And within seconds, I answer my own question
Apparently, it's been reported that the official update will, indeed, unroot your phone as well. Sorry for the wasted space.

If you install the official upgrade with the Odin files it will also "unroot" your phone. I say that because it's just putting a fresh system image on your phone so of course it will be "unrooted". The better option would be to install the pre-rooted version that has the 2e recovery as well so you can install custom ROMs and such.

Haha, man it flies stock.. They're getting close on the bootloader issue, good things come with time I guess. Got the HTC Inspire $99 when I switched, then sold the Showcase for $275 + CS Blackberry Curve 2. Sold Curve the next Day for $125. So made a Total of $400 off of the Showcase deal. Found this Atrix used for 3 days with an Otterbox Defender Case for $400. Saw his AT&T receipt for it. He didnt like it, and wanted to go back to an Iphone... Even though I jumped ship I still appreciate your, and all other Devs work.

Yea, if you updated your CWM via rom manager then you'll need to go flash our custom CWM 2.5.x (see phidelt's kernel/recovery post (stickied in this forum) which links to a list in the fascinate forum that has the file you need.)
Rom manager was only used to update our CWM in 2.1, post 2.1 it's not supported so you might as well save yourself some trouble and uninstall it .

Actually, at this point I don't care if it's stock or not, just as long as I can get something loaded back on my Showcase and get it active with CS.

This thread is about the Showcase, not the Mesmerize.
I am finaly getting some time to sit down and work see what I want to do with my Infuse. I have been doing a lot of reading and searching. I would love to go back go back to a GB rom. I loved them on my Captivate.
Saw how to get back to stock. Always want to know how to do that.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116251
In searching it seems like of I go to a GB rom that I see have the issue with video only shooting at 15fps and the HDMI does not work. I do not think I am finding any that do not have this issue. Am I correct on these finding?
Is this the only major under line problem that is with GB roms? I know every rom is going to have some issues. I really want to make sure I am good with working BT since I live near Chicago and if you talk on the phone you have to have BT or you will get your butt pulled over.
I am happy with the performance of my phone. I am not in great need to OC it. Though I am seeing people getting up to 1.6g.
I am just trying to figure out where to start. I saw a post today about a leaked GB rom for the Infuse but it was closed and the orginal post was removed. I am guessing that it was fake or something was up with it.
The HDMI out is not a huge issue for me. I would like to keep the 30fps. I do not use video that often. But there are time when all of a sudden I need to shoot video and I do not have my normal camera on me. That is where I love my phone.
In short, as of today, on this forum, the answer is no. Gotta wait until AT&T rolls out GB.
OK thanks. Think I might hold off on going to GB for now then. Hope I can hold out. LOL
Actually, there is a deodexed rom in the developement section which is of the new beta gingerbread for AT&T. The kernel that came with the leak supports HDMI out and 30fps. Although, some users report unreliable cell connections or loss of signal.
Search around, you'll find it.
Other than the new UCKI3 leak - nope.
Thank you.
Think I will give it a try.

for hdmi that would work or you can flash the full odex rom in odin that is posted in the general section.
an easy way to flash the ucki3 kernel without odin if you want to do it that way is to flash the deodexed rom then download sgs kernel flasher from the market. download the full odin package to your phone and open kernel flasher. choose the odin package as the kernel. the app is smart. it will find the zimage in there and flsah it.
remember to backup entropy's kernel first. if you need recovery you will need kernel flasher or odin to restore a kernel kernel with working recovery.
i hope we see something with bootloaders soon because without source code im not sure there will be a rainbow fix.
or if you wait an a few ill post the hdmi kernel as a cwm file. i still recommend to have kernel flasher either way. (it flashes cwm packaged kernels as well, even if they are packaged with a rom)

I am not worried about doing it. I want to make sure I am doing it right. Once I get the first few flashes down in this phone I will be happy. It is just that the Infuse it a little different then the Captivate with flashing.

Good news in this particular case - It's next to impossible to accidentally clobber our bootloaders. (Heck, we haven't even successfully flashed Rogers bootloaders onto an AT&T Infuse) Only one Infuse has ever had its bootloaders clobbered, and that was part of a highly dangerous experiment for which the device owner volunteered.
Pretty much for the time being (UCKH1 could change things once someone figures out how that update flashed a bootloader), it's basically impossible to fully brick a device with Odin/Heimdall - or CWM either.
Okay I literally just got this phone yesterday and I see all this talk about Gingerbread and how great it is so I decided I want to try it. I know next to nothing about all the technicalities about this phone so I youtube'd how to do it and found this video that I plan to use to help me in the process. - watch?v=YuURgkUYn1A
So if I follow that process and use the files he uses, I should have Gingerbread and still have my connection to AT&T, GPS, and WiFi? Also, when AT&T finally does release it officially, will I be able to just go to Software Update on the menu and get the official AT&T Firmware and not have to worry about all this technical stuff again?

So if I follow that process and use the files he uses, I should have Gingerbread and still have my connection to AT&T, GPS, and WiFi? Also, when AT&T finally does release it officially, will I be able to just go to Software Update on the menu and get the official AT&T Firmware and not have to worry about all this technical stuff again?

Try THIS link out, its got pretty much everything you want to know to get started(including vids). The only things that don't work on GB currently HDMI and on some of the roms, bluetooth. If you want to get the official OTA when it drops you will have to go back to stock, easiest way is to use THIS method. Also when GB does drop, Devs most likely will make their own roms based on the official GB.
Once your rooted and have recovery installed use THIS thread to find the ROM you want...
This is just a rough overview, so make sure you READ carefully and take your time, any question you have is usually answered in the appropriate thread.
Here is a link to the latest AT&T Gingerbread leak. Use Odin to flash it, and if you stick with the included stock kernel, everything works as it should. It looks very close to being ready for release. If you want it rooted, flash Entropy's kernel and then use CWM recovery and the Superuser zip you can find on here to install su. Then, flash the stock kernel again to keep everything working (video, bluetooth, etc.).:

Agreed, but in your earlier post, you gave some good links that show how to get started. If he reads the information in those threads, and tries out rooting stock Froyo, installing the modified recovery, and flashing some custom roms, that post shouldn't be too hard to follow.

So, you have a custom kernel with CWM and everything working with UCKK4 in catyrom?
I figured we would have to wait until AT&T / Samsung released their Gingerbread source to compile a completely working kernel. Can you point me in the direction of a custom kernel w/ CWM that has video and everything working in stock rooted UCKK4?
Yes..that was then this is now...lol...with some mods to some jars and framework it will work...learned that myself...

That's legit Dman, it seems you learn a new trick on a daily basis; ports, roms and now kernels. I'm loving how the infuse development is still kickin!
So back on topic lol. Xia, Dman's CatyRom is one of the most recent GB roms (and plenty more), it's based off of the leaks from At&t. Once your ready, look into that!
Edit: Nevermind my question, dman, thanks anyway for what you're doing.
To the OP, a good AOSP Gingerbread rom that I keep coming back to is Serendipity VII. I hope that MikeyMike will still come back to update that one when we get the official AT&T Gingerbread.
You can find that here.: http://serendipityinfuse.weebly.com/
I'm sure what I've done is no new news to the other devs

Couldn't help seriously laughing out loud to this comment. I consider myself to be pretty computer literate but still have to step away from the electronics everyonce in awhile for fear of judo chopping my own. My best advice to all noobs is... take your time and read. Its all right there in front of you. That is all.

I picked up a WIND Samsung Galaxy S 4G today. I looked in the Android Dev thread here and I don't see anything specifically for this phone.
The model number is T-959W so I don't want to try anything with hacks/roms etc meant for the T-Mobile version.
I'd be happy to supply a dump of my phone for any devs who want to play around and help us here in the great white north!
Thanks
System dump would be nice if you can provide it. I'd advice against installing any mods you found here. Good thing you're cautious
Great, thanks! I have never done a dump before so I'll have to look into how to do it. I will let you know when I do.
I see it has 8 gig internal, we only got 2 there's a tutorial somewhere for system dumps, let me find you the link.
You need to be rooted I believe.

Source files found
I found the following source files from opensource.samsung.com
SGH-T959W_NA_Opensource.zip
SGH-T959W_NA_GB_Opensource.zip
Will these help XDA with support for the Wind SGS4G?
Sure but idk if our devs are gonna build you guys stuff. Also, go to sampro.pl, it is a polish site so use Google chrome to translate it, then create an account for the site, go firmware downloads for your model if you see. If you do, then post a link to the latest version.

Imaging phone
I have heard that there may be an update in August. It may be prudent to wait for this update before capturing a ROM image, in case important fixes are made.
I guess a good question would be whether anyone has had any experience flashing T-Mobile SGH-959v ROMs on to this device.
Another avenue could be to ask someone inside Samsung whether they changed much between models.

Absolutely! I'm currently taking a little break (gotta find a job... like two weeks ago.), but when the dust settles, I'll take a little look at the source and see if we can help out.
What you could start with is a diff between the SGH-T959V-TMB_GB_Opensource.zip and the SGH-T959W_NA_GB_Opensource.zip drops.
I'd be willing to look into giving you guys something fun to work with.
I'll do a series of diffs tonight on the T959W stock kernel source and the T959V sources (stock and our CM kernel).

Another potential problem
I have been hearing on the web (in these forums and on the SuperOneClick page) that the 959W is not being successfully rooted in the usual ways. Has anyone had luck with this?

You really shouldn't flash roms not made for your phone. If they contain bootloaders, you could brick your phone.
Hey T959W people. Looked at the source and things are looking pretty close. I'm not saying to run off and flash our stuff, but I need some info and someone with the big kahunas to try flashing some stuff.
Please be running linux. I can't help you with windows problems.
It would also be helpful if you have a usb download mode jig.
You can get one here:
http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-galaxy-s-download-mode-jig/
Ok Canadians! I've verified that the SGH-T959W should be exactly the same as the SGH-T959V.
There were some interesting differences between our T959V and T959W that may fix some bugs for us on T959V.
With that said, please... please... please, read all of the instructions for flashing ROMs and Kernels very carefully!
If the rom contains bootloaders, please DO NOT flash them until we can confirm there are no bootloader differences.
Like I said before, it is very common to soft brick your device. It is not the end, and do not worry if you do this. Make sure you get yourself a usb download mode jig here:

This will help you use heimdall or odin to flash stuff to your phone to make everything happy again.
You will only hard brick this device by writing the wrong bootloaders to the phone, which is why I am warning you to not flash bootloaders, for now!
With that, enjoy cm7, cm9, aokp, et alii!
I will also announce this in the android general forum!

I managed to get my Wind SGH-T959W rooted and up and running with a unofficial CM9 build, but it took a bit of work.
Firstly, I tried just about every one-click solution out there, to no avail. It's possible SOC 1.7 with rattlethecage works, but I didn't have the patience to find out whether I simply had to wait a bit longer.
I followed this guide(whilst clenching every clenchable muscle I could consciously control):
http://www.galaxyforums.net/forum/o...mission-t-mobile-galaxy-s-4g-gingerbread.html
The gist is, Odin 1.7, stock+voodoo for T959V, plus some update that I'm not qualified to describe. That should get you rooted and if that's all you're looking for, you'll have to suffer through a little T-Mobile branding on startup.
Once you got it all rooted, you'd think it'd be a good idea to toss sgs-ics on there, right? Well, no. After installing the 4G variant, it promptly set off into a boot loop which I'm again, unqualified to diagnose. The obvious solution was to try another team's version of ICS, which I indeed found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1730954
Barring some missing features, it sounds like a good alternative to sgs-ics. Though I had to go through one additional step, which I really, honestly assure you I was under-qualified to execute. When I tried to load Team Acid's CM9 r3 it gave me an assert on the updater-script, since the hardware didn't match up. Easy. Unzip the package, open up META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script, remove the first check. You know it's the same hardware, you don't need some stinkin' script to tell you it won't work.
So all said and done, I now have a Wind Mobile SGH-T959W running ICS 4.0.4 courtesy of bhundven, the Odin folks, Team Acid, and likely a slew of other contributors.
Thanks folks, and enjoy!
PS, if you want that tarball bhundven, send me a PM with some brief instructions, and hopefully you can help my fellow Winders.

Duh, and rightfully so. You should not flash anything that was not made for your phone.
As I said before. The SGH-T959V and the SGH-T959W are the same phone, just packaged differently for t-mobile vs. wind.

We can fix that by adding your OTA Assert to our build. Then this won't happen. Let me fix that.
Thanks for someone finally reporting something useful!

Please:
Code:
