today I changed the SD Card on my HTC 7 Pro and now I have my old 8 GB card, but I can't used it on my computer. I heard that I may format it with a Nokia running Symbian, as I haven't one, I'm wondering if there is another possibility to format it? (like Linux, Android, or what else) My Windows computer isn't recognizing any card.

The ONLY way I know of for sure to make a memory card that was used in a Windows Phone 7 handset useable again is to insert it in a Nokia phone with the Symbian operating system. The phone will recognize the card and although it will ask for a password, you can just hit cancel, then use the phone to reformat the card. It will then work again in anything. I had to do this just two days ago; I had 16GB & a 32GB cards that wouldn't work, so I found a small cell phone store that had a used Nokia phone. I went up there and they let me use it to format my cards. Now, they work like a charm!
I also heard a digital camera might be able to reformat them, but I haven't tried that, so I can't verify that fact.

hello everyone, i just got my HTC Mogul (Sprint PPC-6800) and i love the device, except for the memory card i have is corrupt and i cant format it. any file i put on there, program, music, anything gets corrupted and wont work. I cant delete the my documents folder that is the only file on there and is what i believe is causing the corruption, does anyone know how to fix this?
Try formatting it on your pc?
Like he said, you might have to use a media card reader on the pc side to format it.
I tried that and it doesnt work on the PC, it says Windows cannot format the device. Any other way to do it?
put it in a camera? do you have an adaptor?

I'm sorry you've run into the same problem I have.. Its the micro SD card that has failed. You may be able to get a little longer use from it doing what I did but ultimately you need a new micro SD card.
I got one of the cheap chinese MP4/MP5 players that use SD cards and used an SD card reader with my micro SD card in it..
If you don't use this your PC will refuse to have anything to do with your micro SD card.
I formatted the disc with the player and then used my laptop to format it again to FAT32 at least 16 sectors. This woke the micro SD card, it still has I/O errors and it misbehaves a lot but its at last usable and its 2GB can retain 800MB. It will hold until I get a new card...
The moral is to save your backups to your PC so you can buy a new card and restore to it..
I know this might be a dumb thread... but I'm pulling my hair out. I have a 16gb MicroSD card. I can't, for the life of me, get it to format. If I put the card in my Captivate... it says that the card needs to be formatted... but it won't do anything when I click format. When I put it into a computer (Windows 7), it doesn't even detect that the card is plugged in. When I plug in the card into a camera and try to format, it says memory card error.
The card initially worked when I first got my phone, but when I switched ROMs, I've started to have this issue. I would just like format the card... and start over. Any other advice? Thanks!
Sounds like your microSD card has been formated/used in one of the Windows Phone 7 phones. WP7 will turn on the security of the card which makes it inaccessible in any other devices. The only solution is to use a Nokia phone running Symbian OS to format it. That's the only device that fully supports the security on a SD card. No PC, Mac or camera can format such card.

I seriously wish we had this kind of security in Android.
I'm positive it hasn't been into a WP7 phone since it last worked for me. When I flashed the ROM, could it have formatted it differently? EXT2 or something? Either way - is there any way I can fix this? Surely the card isn't trashed?
If a PC can't even detect its presence, it's likely trashed if it is not locked by WP7.
2 days ago my son was born and I used my HTC HD7 to take all pictures and videos of him and my wife, these were the most amazing and precious moments of my life and I captured them all on my phone.
My wife and I both have identical HD7 phones, last night I took my phone home and charged a spare battery for her, today I took this to hospital and we both turned our phones off and waited until the "goodbye" sreen had vanished, and then swapped the batterys over in the phones so she had the fully charged battery and I had the low/quarter full battery. When she switched on her phone, everything was fine, but when I switched on mine I saw some screen flash up saying something about "pressing the volume buttons to erase your phone" I paniced at this point and did a stupid thing and took out the battery again. After I put it back in it booted up and gave me the "seup windows phone" screen. At this point I switched my phone off and havent swiched it back on since.
Is there any hope of recoverying the pictures and videos? Apps, contactacts etc I dont care about, but these are the most important moments of my life I want to recover. I have no idea what happened, but at the moment I am very upset.
I am an IT technician myself, and in the past it has been all stored on the memory card, but there is no way to remove the memory card on this phone. I am willing to destroy the phone to preserve this data if needed, Is there any way I could remove the memory card? I could try some data recovery software if this is the case.
Please help, the might be a simple way to sort this I haven't been able to find. I have now been up 36 hours as my wife has had a lot of complications and lost a lot of blood last night and ended up having a transfusion. Sorry to be so personal, but I am really desperate to save these photos.
you might have accidentally held the volume button when you turned on the device, and that triggered that factory reset feature.
I have done this accidentally with my trophy as well when i was running late for work, but instead of removing the battery, i held down the power button and tried again, but when it turned on it didnt show me a setup one where you type in your windows live id, instead my one was an image of a windows phone suggesting to connect to a laptop via USB cable, again i didnt panic and turned off the screen and held down the volume button and the power button and i did trigger the factory reset in purpose, once i was at the factory reset screen, pressing any other button (camera key, and sleep/wake/power key) apart from the volume keys disables the reset feature and will continue to boot to wp7.
I dont know if Im helping, but thats how I resolved my situation.

Secondly do not worry all is not lost, if you cannot get the handset to boot normally you can remove the memory card (without voiding the warranty too) A lot of people figured this out when they had fist purchased the HD7 and have since used the following video clip to help them upgrade the memory card size:

I have done this myself but had trouble when reading the memory card via a dongle (this is due to the differing format used by WP7) the way i got round this was either by putting the memory card into an old N97 nokia phone and using the pc software to remove the pictures from it or to use a flash drive recovery app found via google.

It doesn't sound like you actually performed a factory reset so it's probably fine... but if you want to be safe, pull out the SD card like the previous post says. It might make you factory reset after putting it back in, but if you already save your pics and videos, who cares, right?

It's okay to take out the SD card and put it back as long as the phone isn't turned on in the meantime and nothing is written to the SD card.
So it's okay if you use the SD card to recover photos and put it back in, as long as the phone stays off in this time.

I tried removing the memory card and plugged it into a card reader, no joy reading this card, in fact it wouldnt even detect. I also tried putting it into my Toshiba Camileo, which I know deffo supports SDHC cards of this size, was unable to see it at all.
Also tried it in a new laptop, with a micro > full size adaptor, no joy, and a blackberry 8520 with mass storage enabled still cant read this card, when I choose disable mass storage it tells me the memory card isn't formatted.
I know Windowsphone7 files on the memory card isn't supposed to be accessable outside the OS but this makes data recovery impossible for me.
If this was a PC HDD or standard SD card I could run some data recovery software, and try to recover these files even if the card has been formatted. but I have no idea how to do this for this card... any ideas?

Sadly, you need a Nokia cell as stated above, to read the card. Their OS is the only one that supports the partition format & password protection. I have 2 SD Cards that won't work on anything other than a Nokia cell because of this. They came out of a Nokia MusicXpress & Nuron my room mate had.

So you reckon if I buy a Nokia 5230 or similar I should be able to read this card? I should be able to pick one of these up for £35 or so, well worth it to get these photos back.
I have no experiance of nokia phones since the old days of my 3310. Do i need to use nokia software or does this present itself as a removable hdd in windows?

Creamy stated the n97. I'm not family with all this as I never done it, but there's a lot of threads regarding this. People using Nokia phones to unlock & reformat SD card so they'll work for other devices. As to what devices this work on, I'm not sure, but as long as the card hasn't been erased yet, it's possible that a Nokia phone will be able to read the card & transfer files to your pc. You can look through the forum for more information from people with experience. My experience only deals with trying to get these 2 SD cards working with other devices & will result in for formatting the cards.
NOTE: Also, I do believe you need the nokia desktop software install to transfer file, but am not sure. Another thing, if you do find the sd card is empty, maybe reformatting it in the nokia phone, you'll be able to directly put the sd card in your pc & use your partition recovery tools on it.

If the memory card is not recognized in the PC or it is impossible to access the data on it, the controller on the card is damaged. There is only one way to get the data back, digital media recovery and directly access their raw data with a programable digital media recovery tool. Ok so I searched the forum and google and I can't seem to find anything that answers my specific issue. So here are the details,
I have a PNY micro SDHC 8GB Class 4 card I had used on my old Sanyo Zio one day the phone informed me that it was corrupted so I formatted the card with my Zio and after before the phone completed the format it shut itself off and started bootlooping. The phone would not stay on without a mounted SD card. I removed the card and put in my 4GB backup sd card and the phone started to work again. I sold the Zio a few weeks ago with the 4GB card and upgraded myself to a HTC Droid Incredible I turned it on and inserted the 8GB PNY card and the phone would not recognize it.
So I grabbed my card reader and attempted to format it on my PC running windows vista when I insert the reader it picks up the drive but when I click Open it comes back with "Please insert disk into drive H:" The card reader is functional and the driver is up to date and it is in the locked position. If I right click I can choose format and set it to Fat file system and it comes back with the error "Windows was not able to complete the format."
Also if I go into properties it will not show the size of the card or any data on it because its unable to detect the drive. I obviously cannot mount the SD card to format it on my phone because it will not find the SD card at all. I've heard there is a way to format using Linux but I am not familiar with Linux but I am an experienced user with PC and by no means incapable of learning I know my fair share and can learn Linux if this would be a viable solution I just need a point in the right direction. I've a Sandisk 64gb class 10 microsd that used to work fine. All of a sudden it has become read-only. I can read all files, but i cannot delete/add any files or format the sdcard in Android, linux or windows. Every attempt to format sdcard fails with 10+ tools I tried on PC (including gparted, fdsik, etc).
Micro-sd has no read-only switch. Is this hardware problem?

I don't know if you have been able to solve this issue, but it is the same as mine.
I can read all the files but I can't format, partition, write... nothing!
I tried any windows or linux app or distribution, Mac and PC, but nothing at all!
My microSD card is a Sandisk Ultra 64GB.
Any suggestion? Buy a new one?!?
Try HDD LLF Low Level Format Tool by HDDguru for Windows (it is for SD cards too, despite the name), and make sure that other cards work with your devices.
Or, are you using a microSD to SD adapter with all devices (Android AND pc)? If so, try a different one - they have a read-only switch. If that won't help, it indeed looks like a hardware problem - is it still under the warranty maybe?
When i had similar problem i went to service center and they replaced it without questions. These cards usually have 3-5 years warranty. give it a try

This was on of the tools I already tried with no success. I also tried different sd adapters on different PC...
I'm really thinking that it is an hardware issue of the microSD card. It should be still under warranty, the problem is that all the files are still there (and unmovable) and there are some personal documents that I'd rather not give around...

I'm starting to get a feeling that if there's the same problem with any device, software won't help. I try to always encrypt my data such as photos and saved passwords, but if OP didn't do it, there could be a problem with making use of the warranty, I have no idea how to help anymore
