Technically I think you should be able to do it by rooting with the custom kernel. Let it boot up all the way make sure you have superuser, make sure it works, then flash the stock kernel afterward. Your root ability should stick.

Ok, I got a little excited there for a sec. Thought maybe Samsung had finally given us an official update. That link is for KI3, I believe the latest from sampro is KJ3.
I did notice that when you go to http://sampro.pl/firmware/android/samsung-sgh-t959v/ it doesn't list the latest leaks, just asks for you to sign in. Figured they may have pulled them in lieu of an official release.
Back to waiting....

How do I get the phone in Download mode now? Ever since I updated firmware I can only get it into recovery by holding V UP/V DOWN/POWER and inserting the battery. I tried all different methods to set it into download mode and nothing works!
open Odin on cpu....pull bat....connect USB to CPU...hold down up/down vol.......insert bat while holding up/down vol.....should put you into download and your phone will appear in Odin.

There is no current method to root a stock GB kernel for this phone unfortunately, so the only option is to Odin a custom stock kernel, or flash it, then reflash the stock kernel and hope root sticks. You can try the voodoo OTA root keeper, and try that, but its not guaranteed.

If that's not working you can download the Android SDK from android.com, install it, cd to the 'platform-tools' directory, insure your phone is plugged into the computer & is on, then issue the 'adb reboot download' command.

So after a bit of work I was able to decrypt the encrypted file from the fus.samsungmobile.com site. The result? The stock zip able to be flashed to your device to put it on UVKD1.
Mostly I did this because of people who may have problems with Kies Mini to update to UVKD1 (like I did, took forever to get drivers etc and kies to behave).
Again this is completely stock! Nothing done to it. I did use Kies Mini to apply this update automatically, but again it's the unencrypted zip that gets flashed to your phone.
As always, I'm not responsible for bricking your device etc. etc.
I imagine this can be used via ODIN to update your device, but again I haven't gone through this process.
As I have not tested this method personally, I cannot guarantee anything. Just wanted to provide the STOCK Zip without the encryption on it.
Anyone more knowledgeable about this please feel free to interject.

only thing I noticed was that the pattern lockscreen now has the emergency button at the bottom centered below the pattern. It's fairly smooth, seems like mostly bug fixes based on the release notes.
I'd really be curious to find out what the OTA url is for this, but not sure anyone here is going to get the OTA, cause we're probably all rooted or that and KC1 won't.
However, if anyone does wanna logcat and then get the OTA eventually that would be cool.

You can odin a ROM that's gotten rooted so you can use quickreboot or adb to get into recovery mode, then you can use CWM from there if you had it installed already. I just had to flash an old rooted ROM to be able to get to recover my CWM backup.

Thanksssssssssssssssss!!!
To going to download mode first you must open ODIN. Assume your phone is off. Then press and hold the volume + and - then plug the USB to your PC. You should see a BIG yellow triangle on the phone said Download mode. Hope this helps.
Keymapping is changed in GB. Not familiar with your phone nut on the original Vibrant GB bootloaders now require one volume key instead of two.
I am using this so yes it works.
Download included at the bottom if your phone bricks use ODIN to unbrick it.

honestly, I think it's easier to just grab one of DrHonk's rooted kernels from the dev section and flash that via ODIN, and it also gets you CWM.
Just make sure you don't try to flash a gingerbread (2.3.x) kernel over a froyo (2.2.x) rom and vice versa
Can i do this running 2.2.1? Like updating from Froyo to this firmware, or do I have to update to something else first?
Dr Honk also has froyo kernels posted. Also you could try any of the great roms here as most of them are rooted. Just be sure to read the Noobs guide to flashing very carefully. In the Android developement section RaverX3X has posted the latest stock kernel + root + deodexed + debloat. Your best bet if you want stock.

If you just want root, you can use the latest SuperOneClick. If you want root/CWM/voodoo lagfix you can:
- Install drhonk's kj1 kernel via ODIN
- Install bhundven's KJ6 Heimdall One-Click
I suggest the latter as it's based on the KJ6 kernel & only needs Java to install.

The upshot to the CWM in bhundven's kernel is that it's CWM 5 which doesn't have the problem with mounting /system on GB ROMs. However, you can't restore your previous CWM backups with it, either.
Didnt work for me, just sticks on the fugomod screen.
I will probably get flamed, but I have looked and can't find a direct answer. I just got my t959v as a replacement for my Vib. Can I root this without a PC? I'm on stock 2.3.6.
Thanks in advance.
Just to clarify, when you say "without a PC" do you mean no computer at all or that you're using a Mac/Linux computer?
If you have no access to a computer with which to use SuperOneClick or to load up a modified kernel, then I don't think it can be done as standard recovery doesn't give you the ability to flash like you can in CWM.
I have a theory but it is only a theory. I will verify at a later date or you can jump in if you want (might soft brick, recovering requires a computer).
Theoretically you should be able to use kernel flasher to flash a custom kernel with cwm. Then flash a ROM with root.
Again I have not verified this works but I will try soon (insert vague time stamp here)

Awesome. Too bad we still need to use a computer to work with our phones but eh, if you have such an expensive phone I'm sure there's a computer nearby nowadays. .
Glad you got it working, but I'd recommend flashing one of bhundven's kernels since they are newer. Subscribe to his kernel thread for updates.
So I have decided to flash a custom ROM on my SGS. I've update the firmware to 2.2 via Kies and rooted the phone with SuperOneClick. I then followed the direction on this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V/Kernels and flashed the kernel. I flashed the kernel with SGS kernel flasher and rebooted. Put your phone in download mode and run Heimdall. There are three versions, but one is just a kernel that get your phone rooted if you're on a stock rom. Run either other two will get your phone back to Gingerbread. Remember to click on boot loader option as well if you are from Froyo. This will ensure your phone boot up properly and able to get into CWM if you decided to install a custom rom like ICS.

The model I have is T959 without the v? Is there a difference between the two? Is it ok to use the T959V version?
No... the 959 is just the SGS, not the SGS4G. And they're VERY different. You'll want to go to the SGS forum if you actually have a T959, no-V.
I'm pretty sure this is the 4G version. Maybe I have the model number wrong, but the box of the phone has the picture of the Avatar movie on it. Or the vibrant version. Is that a T959 or T959V?
edit: after a little bit digging, I might be on the wrong forum :S

Yes, yours is a Vibrant version. You cannot use roms in this forum. It will get your phone bricked. Go to the Vibrant forum instead.
